5:09 AM
as nice as this is, and as much as I'd enjoy seeing some MO people chat
I think you might as well use IRC for this

oh
haha, yea, i don't even know what IRC chat is
but see, you can do LaTeX in here right? with ChatJax?
$\mathbb{Z}$

is anyone so careful when chatting as to use latex

oh, but i guess i could use chatjax anywhere
i try to, like when we chat on gchat

can you do colors with this LaTeX?
because if so I think someone might find some good uses for the LaTeX

hm i dunno

5:13 AM
Yes.

this chatjax thing just... loops and revises the page all the time, i think

Colors can be used.

i'll really be impressed when we can do commutative diagrams

$\color{red}{ch}\color{yellow}{ro}\color{green}{ma}\color{blue}{tic}$

nice

5:17 AM
that's about the only valid used of colour in LaTeX

can i see the underlying latex in some way? by scrolling over or something?

@JonBeardsley Try refreshing your browser.
(removed)

um what
oh i see
cool

5:20 AM
$$\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{\cos(tn)x^n}{(1-x^n)^2}-(\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{\sin(tn)x^n}{1-x^n})^2$$
$$=\frac{1}{\sin(t/2)}\sum_{n=1}^\infty\sin(\frac{tn}{2})\cos(\frac{t(n+1)}{2})\frac{x^n}{1-x^n}-\frac{1}{2}\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(n-1)(1-\cos(tn))x^n}{1-x^n}$$

well that's nice

thx
It shows that the number of representations of a number by $4$ squares is equal to
$$8\sigma(n)+16\sum_{d\mid n}\frac{n}{d}\cos(\frac{\pi}{4}d)-2r_2(n)-8\sum_{d\mid n} d\cos(\frac{\pi}{4}d)$$

It would have been nicer if you gave the explanation before.

oh i see, and this is MO
cool

Good. I put homotopy theory, you got a better name?

5:24 AM
so.... another such room has been created, associated to MO rather than MSE
oh no
that's fine

cool^

i'm currently struggling with a split identity
between MO and MSE
and i'm not sure how to bring them together. but once i do, I dunno, I guess I'll delete this room? or it will delete itself, or, whatever.
whatever, lol

OK, save this address as a URL, and for that matter choose the "transcript" option, go to that at some point, and save that.
So, what's fun in homotopy theory. What are the kids talking about on the streets?

hmmmm good question. i guess we're still ultimately kind of into spheres

@JonBeardsley Be careful these chat rooms are notorious for becoming "black holes" of productivity.

5:27 AM
yeah
i can see that

EricP, is it true that topological automorphic forms should account for all of the chromatic tower?
I heard that somewhere and it would blow my mind if true

Not to mention how addictive they are ...

Spheres, good, good. What are some names of people you would like to see in this room, starting with known MO folk?

i don't think so. TAF isn't limited to a particular chromatic height but rather relies on whatever abelian varieties the underlying shimura variety happens to parametrize

yeah. the whole gui is just so nice, the sounds are so nice

5:28 AM
but that's different from saying it captures everything

well I'm very happy that Eric is here

yeah ok thanks that's what I would expect really

Eric is the tallest homotopy theorist alive

clark barwick may have me beat, we haven't stood back to back

ohh really?
yeah i've never been close to him
i've only admired him at a distance
let's put that on our to-do list, after we work out this n-orientations thing

5:30 AM
well he's tall

peterson-barwick "stand"-off
literally
I think it'd be a great time to have Tom Goodwillie in here to talk math with
i think he knows everything there is to know
at least... in the general orbit of htpy thry

i can't imagine suckering any non-graduate-student in homotopy theory into here
but i guess we'll see

yeah who knows
i mean, goodwillie was really active on the don davis mailing list
then left for MO
maybe he will leave MO for the allure of the chat
but even so... there are plenty of graduate students who know plenty of interesting things
and the fact that I can write $R[x]/(x^n)$ in here and it looks nice makes it even better

next step is having it execute Mathematica code, eh?

totally
that'd be awesome
hey do people need a certain rep to join here

5:34 AM
Or Coq

@JonBeardsley, I posted this as a Meta question. Maybe you could post an Answer with whatever advertising you have in mind for now. meta.mathoverflow.net/questions/221/homotopy-chat-room

well then we'd be able to get all the HOTT guys in here
i.e. homotopy type theory

Yes, this chatroom needs more hot guys!

not as in... attractive
but
either way, you know, whatever

I was surprised how completely readable the HOTT book was

5:36 AM
I don't know what to write as an answer
to your meta question @Will
oops... i guess that should be the other Will

@JonBeardsley, I also posted on Google+, which is where many HOTT people hang out.

oh really? who knew
yeah, this chat room is already ruining my life. i set out to do some really basic things in mathematica like at least an hour ago.

I AM CHATTING.

Wow, you guys really know how to advertise :D

mathematica as a programming language makes me want to cry

5:40 AM
mathematica is a mixed bag

I can never make it do what I want, I just don't understand how it works as a language

syntax leaves a lot to be desired, language itself is fine

it has useful built in stuff though

i dunno, i just... have it already on my computer, and i'm kind of dumb, so now that i've got it doing some basic things, i'm not about to learn sage or something

I finally learned a bit of Mathematica by trying to implement some of the prime gap algorithms. It was unreasonably slow.

5:41 AM
Not until someone replies, until then you are talking to yourself ;-)

Although that could be my fault.

though if i keep up doing this stuff, there's a good chance i'll have to find some better way to do it. at the moment I haven't even codified what i'm doing into a little function or anything, which would be the first step in the right direction

probably only partially. it's not exceptionally fast

i thought steven wolfram used cellular automata to make everything faster
does mathematica use cellular automata

probably the other way around

5:42 AM
that would be amazing

meaning what? cellular automata make everything slower?

you try to compute a matrix multiplication
behind the scenes there's a cellular automaton running
and there's a button on the side to "reveal" the inner workings

or the other way around means "cellular automata use mathematica"

and you just see a massive cellular automaton at play

In that mathematicians are just very complicated cellular automata, and we use Mathematica?

5:43 AM
that'd be pretty cool
a 12 dimensional cellular automata
or

well, loads of colours to encode that

you know, i mean, just use cowrie shells to compute spectral sequences, or something

@ManishEarth, is this really on SciComp? What did I do wrong?

yeah what is going on
wait is that a real question or a reference to the topic of discussion?
hey @Eric ... do you ever think about $\mathbb{A}^1$ as being a steak sauce?

it does appear to be on scicomp, that must be what the SC is about

5:46 AM
then what is $\mathbb{P}^1$?

a different kind of sauce
an awful sauce

@JonBeardsley :S

:(

we've gone over to the other homotopy room
i am rapidly switching between chatrooms, like a mad man

@JonBeardsley welcome to the addicting part...

5:49 AM
:-)

...also known as "thinking on your feet."

how do the people that run this stuff make any money?

NOW I AM REALLY CHATTING

5:52 AM
YES

i'm a bad homotopy theorist, what's the name of the generator in pi_8 kO

@MatthewPancia YES :D

oh you mean $\pi_8(ko)$?
do y'all know about this chatjax dillyo? so that latex get's instantly rendered?

how does that dillyo
how to dillyo

i don't have chatjax installed (yet?)
also: lambda

5:54 AM
agh, i cannot find the link
or like

you don't have to install anything it's just a javascript script

how do i do it

yeah, it's some kind of thing

activated then

5:54 AM
beardsley i love you but you're bringing me down

idk basically i mean that i don't want my laptop to get hot

oh cool
thx @Will

my laptop's fan is broken
it's always really really hot

although this thing is making my window bounce

presumably it's rendering some of the LaTeX from higher up

5:55 AM
oh
right

there you go
now you can see when I type $\mathbb{POOPOO}$

crass

sorry
the band?

this is not a place for crass chats, please

5:56 AM
See starred message on the upper right, click on the ucla lnk, follow directions.

good, Arnav is here

oh, hey arnav

Yes, please avoid crassness. Otherwise we won't be able to attract hot guys with Coq.

hahahah
no but seriously i did lol
oh wait so the HOTT guys use Coq all the time right?
like, every day?

5:58 AM
beardsley, why is this chatroom all CAPS

Some use Agda.

oh, dern it
matt, i have no idea what you're talking about

these chats are yelling at me

maybe it's some weird filter they have in Texas

HOMOTOPY THEORY

5:58 AM
oh that one

ahhhh calm down!!!

it's just the stylesheet, it's not actually in caps

you can blame @WillJ
jesus
that startled me
not so good with tagging yet

well okay

arnav can't talk
because he doesn't have enough reputation
