@BryanKrause I think you would be an excellent moderator.
@AliceD @WYSIWYG I've been chewing on the idea myself, but am concerned about the time commitment. I'm semi-retired, but still have periods of time where I'm quite busy. Could you or any of the other mods share how much time you spend per week?

Yes please, can you say something about the expected time commitment?
3 days left for the nominations and still no decent profiles...
@DeNovo De Novo. It depends. The problem is that I can share how much time I devote to it,but imo it's not enough. Assuming that with 2 decent mods in place it may become enough, I can tell you it's about, say, less than 15 minutes per day. Maybe even less than that. In the weekends things are quiet for example.

But as I state above -
I only can find the time to do the core stuff, namely settle arguments and handling flags. a good mod should have the time to regularly scan posts, and upvote where possible, downvote and most of all, comment - especially for newbies.
I can do that over at Psych&Neurosci, where the traffic is low, and the relative number of active hi-rep users is high. At Bio traffic is dense and quality is often questionable - we need more hands on overseers. And that's, imho, why we need another mod, or two.
If we have 4 mods (we've effectively been operating with 2 active mods for a long time) this may become feasible again.
@DeNovo I would certainly welcome you to the mod team for sure.
If nobody steps up I am willing to candidate myself. I would have 1h per week to dedicate. I hold a PhD in molecular biology, I worked in academia for about 10 years in genetics and genetic engineering and bioinformatics. At the moment I am Principal Scientist in a biotech company. I think I do have enough bio background but I do lack experience as a moderator.
Hey all... I was reading this discussion and it seems people with not much moderation experience like me aren't going to cut it for being a mod... What is the plan if no one else nominates themselves?
anyway, i came to post my answers to the mod questionnaire and get feedback regarding that: biology.meta.stackexchange.com/a/3914/10401
@alec_djinn from what I understand, bio experience is not the problem... it's moderation experience...
09:32
@alec_djinn Yes indeed, over at Psych&Neurosci we have a very good mod with little rep. It's all about what one has done behind the screens in terms of mod activity. Total tally of mod-badges delivers a reasonable indication, and the candidate score visible on the election site as well.
@TanMath you have to start somewhere... But yes, indeed I would prefer someone else stepping in. But so far the candidates have no mod nor bio exp, this is scary.
@alec_djinn I agree. I'd rather see someone in place with more experience on meta and past mod activity
@alec_djinn another candidate has bio experience and I do too...
@AliceD if no such person comes around, what will happen?
@TanMath I'm quite confident it will turn out for the best. Otherwise we'll have to discuss. There's some time left.

@AliceD i don't know how to best ask this, so I be a little direct... I know I am obviously not an ideal candidate, but what is your opinion of my nomination?
lol i just realized how outdated my profile is...
10:04
@TanMath You had a bit of a learning curve when you just started (who hadn't?), but you're an active and productive member on main now. You're overall mod activity is good, but your participation in the review queues is too low imo. Also your meta participation is low. All in all, you have potential, and more so than the current two candidates for sure, but there's room for additional mod experience imo.
10:28
@DeNovo The exclusive mod activities don't take much time: ~15-20 minutes everyday may be. However, as @AliceD mentioned, the other activities take time but these are not limited to mods. All users should participate in the reviews.
11:14
@AliceD @WYSIWYG good points. I'll start being a more active user. Let's hope for a great candidate to show up for now.

Well, let's see what trouble I can cause here... Does anyone have any questions for me that they haven't already asked elsewhere? And PS, I do have mod experience, just not here on SE :)

1 hour later…
15:33
@WYSIWYG @AliceD thank you. A concrete time expectation is helpful. I'll think some more about whether I should nominate myself.
16:11
@DeNovo don't think too long, or the nomination phase is over ;-)
