Q: Complex extrusion howto

Wolter HellmundI want to extrude a profile (either a mesh or a curve) along a "guide" curve such that: The profile is always parallel to a plane, e.g. the z plane. Extruding a profile curve along a guide curve tends to align the profile curve's normal with the guide's normal at all points, and this doesn't wo...

Q: Why are materials linked to meshes by default?

Wray BowlingOver the years I've discovered that I've had much more trouble with scenes where materials were linked to meshes. This is Blender's default. Then I'll go through the arduous task of re-linking the same material(s) to the objects instead. I know that I can set the default on my own machine/install...

Q: What Should We Do About Tags With Different Meanings Depending on the Context

CharlesLWhat should we do about tags that can mean different things depending on their context? For example, mirror(although I'm sure there are many others). Mirror can mean: mirror modifier, mirror material or a mirror model. Should we make tags specifically for each one?

1:49 PM
@CharlesL your pending tag suggestion is not worded correctly.

is it allowed to downvote in the moderator nomination?
(not that I want to, but someone downvoted one of the posts)
@iKlsR ?

@CharlesL it doesn't matter, those are rarely (if ever) decided by votes.

i didn't realize that :P
ok

just ignore it, when I first posted mine the other nominee had 4 votes over me :)

yeah :)
i got four upvotes and one downvote
i thought it was decided by votes :P

@CharlesL I wouldn't say it doesn't help but its not decided by that. ok

3:26 PM
OK :)
254 views per day!
hmmm... our questions per day went down
it used to be over 20
now its 12.5

yeah stuff will fluctuate from time to time

i'm gonna go and try to bring in somemore traffic from google plus today

yeah!

maybe a little on twitter to
i don't have as big a following on twitter though
I'm also adding it to the description of my most popular videos

do people read descriptions?
perhaps an annotation in the last 5 or so seconds..

3:40 PM
yeah
especially if I add a link to a .blend file or something
annotations don't link out of youtube videos
done!

I know nothing of youtube, they do on some videos, probably partners.. dunno
ok

hopefully that'll bring in some traffic

hopefully

i get about 300 - 500 views per day
say half the people look at the description that'll be 150-250 people reading the link
then about 20 or (hopefully more) will click the link

hopefully

Q: Return list of associated vertex index, weight values for a given vertex_group

neomonkeusI am currently porting some code from the 2.49 API to the 2.6 API and looking for a nice way to replace this function call vert_list["bone"] = b_obj.data.getVertsFromGroup("bone", 1) This function returned a list of vertex tuples (index, weight). I coded up a working sample for what I think I...

@stacker what would be the most efficient way of adding 'syntax highlighting' to a JTextPane?
I'm thinking of writing a parser but I wonder if it could be done with a document listener etc..

@iKlsR @iKlsR Hi, I haven done swing programming for years, I would recommend to go through stackoverflow.com/…

@stacker nah, I hate digging through SO, I can implement it either way I want to, just wondering what you thought would be more efficient.
But since you say you haven't done any swing in a while.. folks on IRC said its best to write the parser, it will come in useful in the long run.. already started btw.

@iKlsR I would look for an open source library, life is short

@stacker my time is short, I already did.. too much to dig through, they are all so old..
my best bet was jEdit and that is a mess, the only salvageable src I could find was from 2001.. pre pre pre pre 1.6
before enum was even a keyword.. heh

@iKlsR How about syntax coloring to html and set the result into html-capable widget? Or event JavaFX (I havent tried that personally)

@stacker I don't like working with the JEditorPane .. it gets wonky at times and is very difficult to cast
last time it took a 12 line class.. awful mixture of Components and Strings.. shudders
JTextArea is very fluid but only supports plain text.. I might just switch back to Qt one day.. java is painful..

7:11 PM
@iKlsR Sorry for the delay I was afk, never tried that but would agree that it would be a lot of work, I mostly develop server backend stuff.

ah ok, np

Q: Do .blend files store information on which version of Blender they were created in?

UtasI'd like to know if a .blend file contains information about the version of Blender it was saved from. I have couple of old files and I'd like to open them in version of blender they were originally created in.

Q: how to make game engine render stereo on 2 monitors?

user1740008I am trying to use the game engine to display side-by-side stereo on 2 monitors. Does anyone know how to do this? I have been successful using the standalone player to display side-by-side stereo on a single monitor, but I need each image to go to the corresponding monitor. Also, when I disable...

Q: How to simulate string?

JohnI want to make a group of party balloons. The strings on the balloons should have slack or be tight based on the length of the string and the location of the balloon. I thought the best way to start this would be to take a long thin cylinder and place it at the base of the balloon. How can I use ...
