Still miss IkLsR....
found that gif from ages ago

Hi all. Brecht wants to post a community ad here
He's wondering when he can do it for 2019?
The meta post for 2019 has not been posted yet
@David @gandalf3

2 hours later…
18:21
Hello people o/ Still mostly the same people around, that's nice to see :)
18:55
@someonewithpc Hey, how are you doing?

2 hours later…
20:30
@TARDISMaker Eh, not too bad... About to start a week-full of exams. Not looking forward to it... You?
20:40
@someonewithpc Sounds fun :P
@someonewithpc I'm doing pretty well
Just got a promotion at work (mcdonalds) so I'm a manager now
I won't say more than that just because this is the internet
But it will be interesting
My computer died, so I got a laptop and have to set that all up
And I got a mechanical keyboard and headphones
(christmas produced some good presents this year)
21:00
Ooh, sounds nice :)
I need to get some sort of job, too...
Not sure if I mentioned, but I'm studying Computer science. Probably not too surprising :P
@someonewithpc Nope! :P
It sounds cool though
What type of programming and such interests you?
Ooh, hard to say...
But recently learned prolog and it's quite interesting
Weird, but interesting. A cool thing is that to some extent you can run computations forwards and backwards
@someonewithpc Huh, that's interesting
It's mostly used for AI type stuff? (wikipedia)
Ya, it's the main application
But we weren't doing any of that for now
We had an assignment where we had to make a calculator with polynomials and then a layer of natural language processing on top, to make it understand commands in English
That sounds interesting
21:13
@TARDISMaker Sorry if it's rude, but are you studying?
@someonewithpc I'm still in high school
In my last year
Ah, ok
Planning on going to college?
Yes
The currently plan is to study percussion performance
Oh, cool :) I think I remember you played keyboard, at least, right..?
@someonewithpc Piano you mean? I do a bit, but I'm not very good
I also play xylophone and such and I'm better at that :)
But my specialty is timpani
Timpani (; Italian pronunciation: [ˈtimpani]) or kettledrums (also informally called timps) are musical instruments in the percussion family. A type of drum, they consist of a membrane called a head stretched over a large bowl traditionally made of copper. Most modern timpani are pedal timpani and can be tuned quickly and accurately to specific pitches by skilled players through the use of a movable foot-pedal. They are played by striking the head with a specialized drum stick called a timpani stick or timpani mallet. Timpani evolved from military drums to become a staple of the classical orchestra...
21:22
@TARDISMaker I don't even know what that is .-.
@TARDISMaker Thanks :)
(because most people have no idea what timpani are)
@someonewithpc :P
@TARDISMaker Well, you're not wrong :P
@TARDISMaker Right, yes, sorry
@someonewithpc That's fine, I just wanted to make sure we were talking piano and not mallet percussion
A mallet percussion instrument is a melodic percussion instrument played in a particular fashion, with mallets. Mallet percussion includes: xylophone glockenspiel (or bells) vibraphone marimba Metallophone crotales balafon aluphoneThe use of mallet percussion dates back at least 4,000 years to the first known xylophone. Mallet percussion was first used in a modern European orchestra in 1874, when Camille Saint-Saëns used a xylophone in his Dance Macabre.Modern mallet percussion instruments exist at many levels, from toy glockenspiels such as the Pixiphone popularly (and incorrectly) known as...
Also useful... I'd call it a xylophone
But that's probably insulting :P
Sounds cool, though :)
@someonewithpc That depends on if it's actually a xylophone or not :P
21:25
Got anything you played I could listen to?
But I'm used to people not knowing whats going on
@someonewithpc Nothing solo
@TARDISMaker Right, generic term
Do you want to hear some orchestra music?
Sure :)
Though I probably won't appreciate it much...
21:27
Not too keen on music, if I'm honest. Like, I appreciate it and there are some I like better and what not, but I normally don't listen to it by itself
@someonewithpc I can get that
Tend to mostly listen to podcasts while working, for instance
Sure
I would probably find that distracting, but to each their own
@TARDISMaker Yep, I get that. It's mostly just noisy, but it let's me focus on it if I want to take a small break and kind of flush my train of thought
@TARDISMaker Sounds good :)
@someonewithpc Thanks :) It was a lot of fun to play
21:30
I'm guessing you don't want to say what you were playing there?
That group is like 20 times better than I am
@TARDISMaker I bet :)
@someonewithpc Well keep it as anonymous as it can be :P
@TARDISMaker Fair enough :)
@TARDISMaker Fan of the series, then?
Star Trek is better :P
@someonewithpc Not a ton actually
21:31
I haven't watched basically any star wars
Still
I enjoy it, but I didn't watch them until I was like 14 or 15
@someonewithpc I still haven't seen the prequels
I think I just watched some animated thing, which I bet doesn't qualify as real
Nice :P
Played anything interesting recently?
@someonewithpc In terms of music?
21:34
@TARDISMaker No, sorry :P
Games
Ah, okay
I guess I should have clarified
I'm stuck on Factorio
Stuck how?
As in its the only game I really play
It's really great
21:34
I bought it, but didn't finish the tutorial...
Somehow got sidetracked and didn't get back to it
I'm also playing some cities skylines and openttd
@someonewithpc Sure
I think you have to get out of the tutorial and into the free play to actually get into it
The only game I've been kind of playing is Breath of The Wild
@someonewithpc I actually haven't played that at all
It's neat, but I'd say it's kind of overrated
21:37
Playing on cemu, btw, not going to buy a switch for that :P
I wouldn't either
Using Blender at all?
I actually managed to get a small gig in the summer where I used it, so that was a pleasant surprise
Planning on diving into the coding side of it, after my exams
@someonewithpc Not really
The irony...
I made some short films with it (editing) in the past couple years but that's it
@someonewithpc I know :P
I like the people here so I stay somewhat active :)
21:40
I wish there was a proper way to get notifications on my phone, because this way, clearly, I don't check in often enough
I even go on the main site every once in a while :P
@someonewithpc I can see that
Usually happens to me is I'm doing something unrelated (usually looking for something on stack overflow) and I see that I was pinged
Or that I got some rep for something from four years ago
@TARDISMaker Yep, that's common
@someonewithpc Yeah, I haven't asked or answered a question on SE in a couple years now
21:42
I got a comment saying that, actually, amd does have open source drivers. True, but my comment was from two years ago :P
@someonewithpc Exactly :)
Everything is completely different than it was a couple years ago
@TARDISMaker On no
Linux support seems to be really great
Scary
@TARDISMaker Yeah, probably, but I never used it...
BTW, still on the linux master race?
I included debian instructions in that one gpu post forever ago and I'm pretty sure it's all completely outdated now
@someonewithpc Absolutely
21:44
Heey, nice
Distro?
I finally jumped to arch
with i3. Wonder where I heard of that before...
Arch
@someonewithpc with bspwm
@someonewithpc i3 is a great choice
Yep, quite like it
I ran that as my daily for at least six months or so
But I don't get the i3-gaps nonsese
@someonewithpc Ha :)
@someonewithpc I wouldn't bother
It's built in for bspwm, so in that case it makes sense to play around with it, but I would never install that fork just for that
21:46
But yeah, really neat so far. A bit of work, but it's stable
@someonewithpc Absolutely
Somehow, for me, Debian kept breaking my graphics driver
@someonewithpc Huh...
Happened twice with updates
Which is weird and probably my fault
It's funny, because arch has always been more stable than any other distro for me
21:47
But I just took the opportunity to jump to arch
If something ever gets messed up, usually I think "this is going to mess this all up" before I do it
Then I spend 2 hours trying to fix the bug just to figure out that I just need to undo what I did earlier
@someonewithpc It's a good choice
@TARDISMaker uh?
I really like the way they manage everything
I would prefer some aspects of debian, but can't complain
What particularly do you prefer?
21:50
I really like how fast pacman is, but I'm not too big of a fan of how the AUR works, I guess
Using pikaur, but still
It's really useful, though
@someonewithpc Ah
I really like the AUR
And I can't seem to get some DE-type-stuff to work correctly
But I didn't pay enough attention when I install things
But it's really minor
And the really updated stuff is really nice
@someonewithpc Are you trying to integrate i3 into a DE
@someonewithpc That was one of the original reasons why I switched
21:51
For instance, emacs. On debian I was kind of stuck with 24 or something ridiculous, while 26.1 is out
It's really nice knowing that if there are instructions saying "make sure this is up to date" that it already is
@TARDISMaker Yes..? I don't know...
@someonewithpc Yeah, that's painful
@TARDISMaker Like, the only way I got it to work was to use lightdm to launch i3
So I don't think so..? But I do have xfce and "some" kde stuff installed
@someonewithpc Thats what I used to do
Is it more just figuring out the taskbars and such?
21:53
("some" because it just pulls in everything... I just wanted a screen shot tool, why do I need a full kde install :( )
@someonewithpc Yeah, that's annoying
Maybe look at scrot?
There are actually a lot of really nice lightweight graphical utilities you can use
Zathura for example is a great lightweight pdf viewer
Feh is great for viewing images
@TARDISMaker No, but, for instance, some steam games don't seem to work for me, while everyone says they do... Not really related, but stuff like that
@someonewithpc Huh...
All your drivers are installed correctly?
And had a weird problem with the backlight changing somewhat randomly
But that's fixed
@TARDISMaker Everything else seems to work :P
21:56
Basically, some small little things
Lack of polish
Which is fine, it's probably my fault
Sure
@someonewithpc Some things like that happen to me
But still, overall, for sure worth it
On my last install I never setup wifi and swap correctly so every time I booted up I ran a shell script to do it
This time it just works out of the box because I actually knew what I was doing
21:57
Yep, yep
Also, I had to have pavucontrol startup on boot each time so that I could set the correct headphone settings
Otherwise it come through speakers (even though headphones were plugged in)
I think part of that was hardware though
Yeah, I had some weird problem with audio, but it's fixed
Don't remember how, though...
Audio was always the worst thing to setup
@someonewithpc Exactly
Happens to me every time
@TARDISMaker And, actually, getting it to work with optimus was kind of weird
So maybe it's not setup correctly
Dunno
@someonewithpc I don't think I even bothered with that
I'm not sure if my computer has it or not
I'm going to have to do some research
21:59
Yeah, I didn't want to
But I think I had to
The main gpu passes through the other one, and I couldn't get it to work otherwise
Optimus is basically sli between the integrated and dedicated bpu isn't it?
@TARDISMaker Uh, kind of
@someonewithpc Ah, okay
22:01
They don't work at the smae time
@someonewithpc Okay
Just multiplexed, kind of
On windows, when I have a monitor connected, windows has the dedicated running monitor and the integrated running the other
Allows you to switch between one and the other
Okay
Anyway, I have to shower and make dinner
So I'll talk with you later
22:02
Anyway, really nice chat
@TARDISMaker :P
I need to study, too
@someonewithpc Yeah, I'm homeschooled so I can do that :P
@TARDISMaker o/
@TARDISMaker Neat. It's not really a thing here, btw
