@gandalf3 I wish they hadn't styled it to look like a youtube knockoff.

@gandalf3 What do you use to hash IP addresses for the BMGC poll?

Soo sad....

VRM
whoop-de-doo

Congrats!
:P
@GiantCowFilms sha256
Which could probably be bruteforced fairly easily
Given there aren't that many IP addresses to choose from..

3:15 AM
Yes, I tested brute forcing one of Blend- exchange's SHA 256 ip hashes. It was cracked almost instantly. Useless :/
For v. 2 I might have to use something other than ip hashes, not sure what :/
Someone one on security SE suggested using bloom filters for duplicate view checking.

o.o
No idea what that means, but it sounds interesting :P

Its quite simple. Basically, you hash a value into a series of indexes that point to a bit array of fixed length. You then turn all the bits those indexes point to to one. To check if a value is in your bloom filter, you simply hash a value into the indexes, and if all are 1, the value exsits in your bloom filter. The length of the array and the number of indices denotes the accuracy.
The propensity for false positives combined means that an appropriately sized bloom filter, will match a very large list of values.
its not totally accurate, but not entirely inaccurate either.

Hm, so it intentionally introduces more collisions?
That makes sense

@cegaton and @GiantCowFilms yes the close thing is not super smart. It goes with the reason that has the most votes, or the CV reason a mod voted for. (so cow in your case you said unclear, but there were 4 dup votes already.)
@gandalf3 it YT they break stuff.
nice image btw
PS surprised you of all people are not using the dark theme.

@gandalf3 what other channels got hit? I was looking because I figured blender could not be the only one.

@cegaton Heresy! You have an autodesk account!??!?!
Autodesk literally drops ceiling tiles on their open source competitors!!!

@x-27 as you can see it has been inactive for a very long time...

I suppose that makes up for it..
you're trying to reform your ways :p
Ahhrrgrggjjssseddffff
I found the video of it, but youtube is still messed up! :(

5:22 PM
@gandalf3 The problem is that IP Addresses are such a small space that if you only have a couple stored in your filter, an attacker could still get a reasonably small list, which is not ideal.
TBH, duplicate IP address checking means you are storing IP addresses, plain and simple. Hashing them is just security theater.
