Is there a way for blender to show the last baked frame of a liquid simulation? I have a big bake going on and I would like the viewport to show where its at. It seems unlikely to me however I would love to be proven wrong.

Most of us are pretty young

not me. i'm 50.
i love denoise so much.

8:26 PM
what . . .
Looks great, I guess once you animate it it would look weird but for a still that's nice

whoa - how can you possibly get it to look that good with a render that noisy?

You check the denoise box under the properties > scene tab

That isn't a Denoising option... THAT is the legendary magic render button!

Blender Guru had a tutorial on it, it's new in 2.79. If you do it right you can drop your samples to a ridiculously low number, like 10 or something.

XD

8:33 PM
the image was literally a screencap of the render, with one tile denoised, and the one beside it not denoised yet.

@AliCaglayan It's been a while, but if you're doing an external bake, I think you can open another instance of Blender and link a new fluid domain to the old directory.

there, that's where i saw it, cued to the part about denoise

1 hour later…
10:05 PM
@kimholder for real? I thought you were something like half that.

@David yeah, i wish. i get that a lot though. drives my husband nuts. :D
so, uh - thanks. see, i've even gotten jaded about it.

@DuarteFarrajotaRamos that is something you must know about everyone in this room. We all are very privacy conscious. (gandalf3 is next level). However being here long enough you come to know things (roughly). I know everybody's age. Now I'm not going to "leak" the info, but for the most part we are all younger then you.

@kimholder denoise is a tricky one, it works for certain scenes but it totally ruins others. High contrast with thin elements becomes a real problem.

@kimholder oh sorry. When one only has a avatar to go from guessing age is, well a guess. (If the avatar is even the real person.)

64 samples No Denoise. Horrible as expected.
64 samples default denoise

10:18 PM
@cegaton yeah, it's worked well for me in most situations. I think i recall it having trouble in dim light.
but i'm not going for a polished look - the areas i need to handle are too large. i accept a smeary look and call it a style :P
@David yep, that avatar is me and the photo is about a year old. really, i do get mistaken often for being a good 10 or 15 years younger than i am. 20 years younger happens now and again too.

500 samples no denoise:
500 samples default denoise

huh. that's a funky effect.
i wonder if it would help to adjust the transmission settings, maybe.

yeah - that's a lot better. still doesn't like the parts with low light

No denoise. Clamp direct and clamp indirect.
100 000 samples no denoise or any other tricks.
8hrs rendering though...

10:27 PM
wow, really high clamp value for the direct there, i wouldn't have thought to try something so high.

@kimholder even then you can see how the hightlights are not as bright.

true, yeah, that makes a big difference, now that i look at them side by side.
that still looks like the work of a good graphics card.
maybe i should put those in an example folder... i tend to try things until something sort of works when i run into this. and it can be very hard to tell what is really happening without doing a lot of samples.

Just for fun. 500 samples radius 25 denoise

@DuarteFarrajotaRamos Younger than 18 :P

heehee - you've made a portal :]

10:32 PM
@David You must work for google, or as a mod you have access to stack exchange secret collected data. I'm gonna tape my webcam now, and put on my tinfoil hat

@David Does that include gandalf3 :P

@cegaton is this the sort of situation where you might try using multiple seeds?

@KimHolder I'm not conviced that image stacking solves the issue. In the case of just noise the denoiser does an OK job with a decent number of samples... for fireflies (and noise in volumetrics) I'd rather turn it off completely and use clamp indirect.

ok. that's good to know.

10:59 PM
@cegaton Would denoising work with image stacking? My initial thought is that the denoising algorithm would throw that off, but I'm not sure...

@ScottMilner you cannot use the denoiser on saved images (or even EXRs) as a postproduction tool, the denoiser works only as you are rendering an image.

11:17 PM
@cegaton No, I meant stacking the image after running it through the denoiser.

@ScottMilner I don't konw, give it a try.

11:34 PM
@TARDISMaker Starting to see I am kin of the 'old fart' around here

@DuarteFarrajotaRamos you are welcome to keep that title. :)
i beat you handily, but you dish out a lot more old-timer advice, so it's yours.

Haha thanks. Now gotta go take my meds
XD
