Anyone here have mice recommendations?
VRM
VRM
something that is wired and fits your hand
Logitech is good
All my mice have lasted one or two years then started double clicking
VRM
VRM
odd
I'm looking for something that'll likely last longer, and has lots of buttons..
@VRM I've been reading lots of positive things about the MX518
VRM
VRM
not my style, might work for you
I personally use a g502
05:17
o.o is it all one piece?
:P
VRM
VRM
hmm?
It looks so.. segmented
VRM
VRM
The two finger buttons are seperate, like many mice
VRM
VRM
I personally hate the unibody designs
05:18
Just to make sure I have the right mouse ^^
VRM
VRM
yes
tbh I don't too much about the appearance, but I agree I'd probably prefer separate buttons
Don't like bending things, even a little bit
VRM
VRM
I kinda hate the whole "gamer" aesthetic, but whatever
I get over it
gotta have that RGB mousepad
VRM
VRM
I vastly prefer cleaner more modern stuff
@gandalf3 don't get me started . . .
05:20
XD
@VRM I kinda thought so; one of the reasons I was surprised when I saw it
If you don't mind me asking, how long have you had it? Has it held up okay?
VRM
VRM
got it cheap, can't argue with tha dollas
(no double clicking?)
VRM
VRM
@gandalf3 Probably two months? It's doing great so far I think
oh okay
VRM
VRM
Very solid, kinda heavy if you aren't used to heavy mice but pretty adjustable
05:22
I don't mind heavy (though < 1 ton is preferable)
VRM
VRM
I wish my Performance MX wasn't so hard to grip, it's so slippery
How are the extra buttons?
VRM
VRM
Very nice, awesome tactile feedback. Not mushy or anything
Convenient locations, fully programmable
Nice
VRM
VRM
(Ctrl + Shift + S for example)
05:24
How does the programming work (wondering about linux support)
Is it stored on the mouse..?
VRM
VRM
hmm, might want to look into it
Do they send normal keyboard events?
VRM
VRM
uses the Logitech software
VRM
VRM
It sends the standard mouse1, mouse2, mouse3, mouse4, mouse5 etc
05:24
....mouse2093
:P
VRM
VRM
lol, some MMO gaming mice look like that might be possible
I have a friend who has something like this newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4RE4AB0871
VRM
VRM
heh?
Not Razer . . .
sigh
whoa
It can only be programmed on windows with whatever comes with it, but it apparently has some memory and an arm processor in there (o.O) and it works just fine after switching to linux
VRM
VRM
interesting
If you can, you might want to go to a store in your area and just feel how the different mice feel in your hand
Then make a shortlist and check quality and reviews etc
05:30
That's a good idea
@VRM ooh, custom keycaps?
VRM
VRM
yeah
I'ma 3D print archlinux and blender logos for all of them :P
VRM
VRM
pretty insane
@gandalf3 haha
I've seen that brand mentioned a couple places, apparently they have some form of kindof-official linux support
VRM
VRM
I want to get a few custom 3d printed keycaps, haven't gotten around to it yet
@gandalf3 yeah
05:33
I want to do that, but I think I might get a new keyboard first
VRM
VRM
All Cherry MX switches are the same as far as keycaps are concerned :)
@VRM hm, the noise there looks kinda like cycles :P
That's definitely a render lol
VRM
VRM
definitely
I mean, it's not like the floating keycaps would give that away or anything
VRM
VRM
lol
05:37
@VRM I've just used one of these for pretty much all time
VRM
VRM
ugh
hideous af
Doubt it has any fancy switches ;)
@VRM no kidding
And that slider thing doesn't do anything
Though actually, the wrist rest is pretty nice
I always miss it whenever I use a different keyboard
VRM
VRM
pretty common these days
That's good
VRM
VRM
oh, having it curved?
05:40
Dunno, I don't think I've used any keyboard with a wrist rest and no curvature
VRM
VRM
I love my Corsair keyboard, however I am not sure if you can get one without RGB lol
This one isn't curved much, so I probably wouldn't notice a lot
@VRM xD
A keyboard is one thing I can probably get behind having lights in
It would actually help to see the keys at night
VRM
VRM
I have custom layouts programmed for gaming/productivity/blender/streaming and they auto switch. I also have the one with macro keys which is nice.
It is rather huge though
Which model?
VRM
VRM
k95 I do believe
05:43
@VRM That does sound nice
VRM
VRM
200 if not on sale
If you can get something similar without LEDs that would get rid of 80% of people's issues with it
As in, the version without LEDs has 80% less problems, or 80% of the problems are with the LEDs?
(wait, I guess those are the same)
VRM
VRM
People have apparently had issues with LEDs dying
VRM
VRM
mine haven't yet, but it seems to be a thing
05:49
That's good to know
VRM
VRM
You could always replace the keycaps with something more visible too
How is the switch noise?
Are they super loud?
VRM
VRM
I have MX Browns, they are fairly reasonable, depends how hard you type xD
Don't get red
they are super clicky
Okay
06:21
@VRM I'm seeing multiple praises of the g502 now. Is it one of those ones where the wheel mode is switched by middle clicking (and actual middle click is a separate button)?
VRM
VRM
yes
VRM
VRM
I mean no
the opposite
So clicking the wheel is middle clicking?
VRM
VRM
Yes
06:21
yay!
That is very good

5 hours later…
12:19
@gandalf3 mine just started doing that earlier this week. getting very annoying.
@gandalf3 you think this one is worth trying, or just close it as offtopic?
@GiantCowFilms you might want to look at this question I know you got actually got it set up and working.
So the OP of this question, who originally asked in an answer on my question, now is getting incorrect answers. Dont know what he was confused about, but I doubt this new question will help him.

6 hours later…
19:05
@David I just downloaded it.
So I have no idea how to build 2.8
I did build 2.7~ a while ago, but I had A HUGE amount of trouble doing it.
Because I don't have enough MS in my computer to begin with :/
ha
That looks almost exactly like what I'm using right now
Funny thing is I've had this mouse for as long as I've used computers, and my dad used it before me
so its probably getting on at least six years of continuous daily use.
The same one?
hm. This one has a bad sensor
19:11
This one seems to be flaking out a bit now
but its only started reacently
I love it to bits. So comfortable, and the scroll wheel isn't hard to push. Some MMB's are a pain to use. this one has a really soft click.
Although it doesn't have fancy buttons
I wonder if I should get something different for my next mouse. It seems worth spending money on, since my hand spends hours every day sitting on it. I use my mouse more than I use most things.
@gandalf3 BTW, did you choose a mouse?
Not yet
I've been looking at the logitec g600
And the g502 (@VRM's mouse)
However I've seen some reviews of each which say they started double clicking after a year or two
Apparently the MX{500,510,518} is the most robust mouse of all time (with buttons)
But they're not made anymore
On the other hand, if you don't mind a little soldering, it's apparently not too difficult to replace the switches themselves
20:15
@VRM If you don't mind me bothering you.. Do you find you use the horizontal scroll/wheel tilt feature often? I had an old MS mouse with a wheel like that, and I seem to remember missing that feature on my next mouse (after it started double clicking....). I'm looking at this, which apparently lacks it. Then again, my last two mice haven't had it either..
VRM
VRM
I rarely use it
Okay. Come to think of it, it's probably possible to bind somebutton+scroll as horizontal scroll
20:46
@Scalia I need your help
Aldo, hi everyone
VRM
VRM
hi
Sup? Haven't been around much :/
VRM
VRM
me neither
working and all that boring stuff
Yeah, I've been busy with school
And getting my driver's license
VRM
VRM
nice
20:54
@Scalia So I want to replace the emergency lights on my house, since they last, like, 5 minutes
I was going to build it out of discrete components, by i don't know enough about electronics, so instead, I was thinking I could use this battery and charger as a base and just get a depletion p channel mosfet and a diode in there, to automatically switch on a 12v LED when the power goes out
Do you think it's a good idea/safe?
21:13
It's a li-ion battery so you will have to worry about how long it stays unchanged cus they lose charge over time even with no load
@Scalia It should only stay uncharged as long as the power is out
You should be able to buy like a little 50 gram lead acid battery at Walmart or something
Also, hi
Hi!
@Scalia Dude, no walmart
But it should preferably be 12v
21:14
@someonewithpc you are gonna leave it plugged in all the days?
And not too big
@Scalia Yeah
Idk what reprucuss heck idk even how to spell the word
I gtg bb in about an hour
It's a wall-mounted thing
It just turns on when the power goes out
@Scalia Cya
22:00
@David Compile problem == offtopic I'd say
