@someonewithpc Congrats!

@gandalf3 @cegaton is there anything I missed, why not just this?
This doesn't work in aligned views (e.g. top, front, side, etc.), which for some reason is what I thought the OP was asking. But now that I look, it appears that aligned views were never mentioned.. :P — gandalf3 3 mins ago
@someonewithpc Congrats :)
yes but the aligned views are different, the grid floor does not even display on those.
@GiantCowFilms No, but you don't get any. I don't really mind the rep, but looking back I can't see what it is about the question that requires CW.
@X-27 You also working on an RTS?
@gandalf3 I did not even think, that was your 1000th answer.
(again) congratulations

@David huh?
@David Well no, but there is a grid
@David I'm not sure we are talking about the same answer.. (at least, I'm not sure..)

A: Creating a Black Hole in Blender

gandalf3The trouble with this is that you need light to "bend" in a continuous arc around the black hole. The reason why this bending is problematic is that cycles assumes light always travels in straight lines. Light does travel only in straight lines, but it can be bent by gravity. Gravity is a distor...

@gandalf3's 1000th answer
01:54
Yes, that's the one
@gandalf3 and quite an answer it is!
@gandalf3 why did you vote to close this blender.stackexchange.com/q/23573/2217?
I wasn't sure what their question was
I've never tried to use the near sensor, but it sounds like exactly the kind of thing it would be used for..
I think he is just asking about how to use the near sensor. I guess there are not many people here that use logic bricks ... @X-27
Probably near sensor > and > action actuator right?
02:02
motion actuator would be simpler.
but yes that is about it
@gandalf3 Now I'm confused, downloaded his blend and now do not see what the problem is. Your CV was right.
hm..
Maybe he wants the object to keep going after the sensor is triggered once?
that was my guess
(after looking at his blend)

from what i think he wants, he wants it so once cube gets near cylindar cube 1 will continuously move.
he has the near sensor go directly into a motion actuator

Q: Move object continuously after being triggered by near sensor

godolomnCan the near sensor be use a switch? Having Cube1 near Cylinder I want the Cube1 to do a infinite continuous movement. In my file Cube1 stops once it goes out of range of the near sensor. Is there a way to make it move forever once it triggers the near sensor?

Q: Why can we format text with bold and italic but not underline?

geccoWhy is it that italic and bold formatting is available while underline is not? I guess it is voluntary, I'm just wondering why that would be the case.

You need the special ASCII charset

Is there a "this question is not in blender" close reason

I think that calls for a negative answer
10:11
hmm
Negative answer aren't really answers though
I know there is a meta on it
but still
like "no, this feature is not in blender. you might try xyz, which lists such and such on their website.."
hmm
okay
I would have answered, but I don't know of any programs which do that kind of thing

Q: How to render as only wireframe in Cycles?

beavoruI need to know how to render a object on Blender Cycles but only as a wireframe, for example, like this: Also, it is possible to vary between the smooth wireframe object and the polygonal wireframe object? Thanks in regard.

Is there a way to do this with nodes?
The wireframe node triangulates etc, but there are some other ways to do it . . .

A: Slap an image on an object in blender

DavidFirst off you can just drag an image right onto the object to add the image. Now before you get too excited, there are some things you have to do to get it to work before it will render like that. First, you have to be using the Blender Internal render engine for the drag and drop to add the im...

Wow, @David has a folder for all the old hats also!

A: Move object continuously after being triggered by near sensor

X-27Although you could have the reset distance at 10,000 blender units before it stops moving, an it may work for what you want, that is not at all the correct way to do this. From what I can tell from your question, you want to have the cube detect being near the cylinder, and then after that, you ...

done, hope it was good - tl;dr

I also told him how to make it stop moving if he ever wanted it to

Q: How can i control the extrude size of a curve while creating it?

beavorui need to make a sightly smaller subdivission on my curve because i need to reach a part of the 3D enviroment without having to move the object, so i use extrude (pressing E) but the curve created is too long and the shape is lost. Is there any way i can control the curve size while pressing E?

@GiantCowFilms Did you made some progress on the map editor?
@NoviceInDisguise Thx, I think he tries to extrude the curve and wants only a small part extruded, but it comes in chunks.
finally thought how to make the building placement system work!!!
@X-27 Could you provide some context are you trying to avoid double allocation of particle system generated buildings or is it more related to BGE physics?
20:35
BGE
I'm trying to do two things, make it so it must be touching relatively flat ground, And make it so it Cant be touching other buildings
dynamically or just looking for a place when it is created?
@X-27 all the hats, the data urls and a svg file of them all.
while your moving the building around, it will turn red or green depending on where you want to put it
@stacker Hmm . . . that is odd. Must have locked constrain to grid or something.
@NoviceInDisguise I can't tell whether he is using a bezier curve or path, I would prefer a path in this case.
20:45
Yeah, should ask him.
@X-27 I see, the idea having a grid to detect collisions (or indicate allocated areas) seems good. I but I only scratched the surface of the BGE. I could do this in several languages but not with logic nodes.
@gandalf3 looks like you were right about this question, look at the comment the OP left on my answer. blender.stackexchange.com/questions/23581/…
@stacker that is the funny thing, I am not using a grid, you can put the buildings Anywhere you want as long as #1, it is not colliding with any other objects, and #2, it is on relatively Flat ground
a grid would be super simper, but so many games have a grid placement system, and I hate them just about as much as "glass walls"
When you would create a bitmap say a building is 8x8 pixel and the world has 256x256 then you could use a binary AND (&) between the current world map and the representation of the object to place is already allocated.
@X-27 I have said it before (and probably will say it again) just use python.
20:51
@X-27 make them a higher resolution and they are no longer noticeable
yah , I already know how i would make it with a grid, but I didn't want to be confined to snapping between spaces like that.
example, switch to your desktop, and move an icon around. It snaps and you can't put it where you want, unless you disable snapping.
@X-27 then you would need to go the more sophisticated way of calculating polygone intersections.
yep :-)

A: How to change hair color along length of strand?

NoviceInDisguiseYou can accomplish this in multiple ways, the easiest way is to use a Hair Info node, and use the Intercept value to drive a Converter > Color Ramp node. Use this to drive the Factor on your mix or add shader node. Here is a quick example node setup: And here is how it renders: As you can see...

PS @stacker I could not get your OSL debug to work.
1
A: Debugging material math nodes in cycles

stackerYou could use a tiny OSL script to print the values calculated by the math nodes: shader Inspector(float input=0,output color debug=0) { debug = input; printf("%f" , debug ); } The printf will print the input values to the console window. You need to wire the output otherwise it wouldn't ...

@David why? didn't you see the numbers in the console?
I made the screenshots when it worked but answered the wrong question which was about the compositor
no, only thing I could get in the console was OSL script complied failed, or sucess.
21:02
Do you have a similar node setup
did not save, but re creating now. it is value > OSL > BSDF > output
@stacker when is the number printed to the console? is it when the render finishes?
@David It's many numbers while each pixel is rendered
Info: OSL shader compilation succeeded

Info: OSL shader compilation succeeded

<!> event has invalid window
<!> event has invalid window
that is what the console gives me after 2 compilings of the script and two rendering.
Did you tick the "Open Shading Language" checkbox in the render settings? (
@stacker definitely :)
read your whole answer and the linked OSL artical
21:13
I recreated it and uploaded pasteall.org/blend/33933
Does it work for you?
interesting, only difference is I have mine set to render to a New Window
Your file worked, Mine is not. has to be some other difference I'm not seeing
hm
I started with a new scene only set CPU and OSL
Setting viewport shading to rendered works also.
dont need to, I got it
Hey everyone! :)
21:22
It was the over zealous OSl optimization. I had a value node plugged in to the script, which is a static value, and thus OSL will optimize it out.
How are you?
@Iplodman Hey, what brings you to BSE?
@David I don't know actually ;P
@David This is mentioned in the blog post therefore I tried to avoid it.
I guess I'm just interested in what goes on over here. I'm not an animator myself, so I'm always happy to learn.
21:24
@stacker yep, that is where I learned of it. Just did not understand it fully till now
@beavoru are you going to give blender.stackexchange special co-producer credit for your project?
4
@Iplodman well blender is much more then animation, it is a full 3D tool set plus motion tracking, NLE, and compositor.
@cegaton :) "made by the community"
I also abused Blender to create icons
@David See, I'm learning already! Nevermind the fact that I'm about to Google two of those words ;)
@stacker sorry to bother you, thanks for walking me through it plus the file.
21:28
I used it briefly in a spur of game development I did (it led nowhere, but still).
@David You're welcome, I was concerned that I overlooked something
@Iplodman fun fact, add "blender" to the front of your search for any of those words, and just watch what comes up.
Or make this your new startpage blender.zeef.com/stacker
@David Hmmm, nothing out of the ordinary. Am I missing something? ;P
@stacker nice page, will bookmark it
@Iplodman should not be out of the ordinary, just brimming with info about blender.
21:32
@David Ah ;P
Well, I'm sure that'll be for another day ;P
I'm just tweaking my blog at the moment.
About what are you blogging?
Programming stuff, mainly ;P
I just wrote an article about Node.js, actually.

@Iplodman These javascript frameworks are pretty fast replaced by a next one, jQuery is there for a few years but node,vertex,angular and so on who follows all this stuff?
although I just learned "The 30-day limit was introduced on 29 April 2011, and at the moment of writing it only applies to Stack Overflow, Server Fault and Super User"
@David one question over any ''30-second period'' wow I wouldn't make it.
@David,@stacker I don't mind helping, at least the questions make sense and some are even challenging.
@stacker They're not replaced, as much new ones are created. All of them have their benefits and their drawbacks.
@cegaton true. I have no problem with him asking a lot of questions. It has helped, and raised our daily question average.
21:44
For example, Angular is designed so that one page can be reloaded in a way that the whole site can be on one pathname. Node.js is JS but on the server's side. As far as I know, most people still use all of them.
@David @cegaton That is what I meant (sometimes as a non native I write things different to what I want to say actually)
@Iplodman I looked into angular it seems to be something like the spring framework in the java world with focus on single page applications.
@stacker You know a little more than me, it seems ;P
@stacker No kidding.. Just call it a time-lapse sequence ;)
@David Greg Zaal told me it went all over twitter, maybe that's part of it
@Iplodman I've only some knowledge in java and recognized some familiar patterns MVC, path handlers everything has different names but is made for the same purpose.
@gandalf3 good for you, and your answer.
21:52
idk why it went so popular :P
@stacker As I said, you're the expert here ;P
@gandalf3 probably because it is a huge answer on a cool topic. If I had to guess, I bet more then half of the people who UVed it did not read it.

@stacker did you just find a bug?
@David yep
You are proven correct
(I did not even set up 2.73 on one of my computers)
22:13
@David lol no, I hadn't had much opportunity to blend these days.
2.73a is going there now
@gandalf3 I just loaded up 2.73a and the factory settings have the blender render as the default render engine! sounds like this might be connected.
I thought sure that cycles was the default now.
@David But it was in the drop down, right?
@David not in master right now. just compiled and BI is default.
@gandalf3 well, yes of course.
22:22
I don't remember seeing anything saying that cycles was going to be default in 2.73
I remember they were working on it, but I guess something came up (?)
is 1.7 the last version of the screencast keys addon?
@David Afaik it was removed in 2.72. 2.71 has 1.7
@user2859 I know, was just looking through my start up file, and wondered if I had the latest (last) version, or a older one.
22:53
another addon question, why is the "Pie Menus Official" addon under the community adddons and not the official addons?
23:34
@stacker I made it work.... It is usable... So I think we are good
