@GiantCowFilms remember the hairboat hat?
00:15
how could we forget?
@gandalf3 if you don't click after extruding and still have the grab operator running pressing S cancels the grab automatically.
Wow, never knew that
(trying to delete comment, having severe internet difficulties..)
@gandalf3 added a gandalf3 style gif :)
what program do you use to display the keys pressed?
00:31
key-mon
Though I'm not really happy with it
I've kinda been going back and forth between it and screencast-keys
it does not look as good as the blender addon, but it does display all the kesy pressed
^^ exactly
But I also don't really like some other aspects of the design, as keys don't get displayed for very long
I really like the way screencast-keys does that scrolly thing, keeping a sort of "history" of the recently pressed keys
yes me too
And says Ax8 instead of A A A A A A A A
just found this, I will let you know what I find out. (you use wine anyway)

Q: Windows utility to render which key I am pressing on-screen

richardtallentI'm giving training to a large group of people remotely and will be covering a number of application shortcut keys. I've seen MousePose's on-screen display of keystrokes; is there a similar product for Windows? The other features of MousePose (fancy mouse pointers, etc.) aren't really useful ...

00:35
The only drawbacks I find with screencast-keys are

* Not all keys displayed (result of modal operators catching keypressed and not letting them through to screencast-keys)

* Doesn't work outside of the 3D view
yep, I had the trouble with the Shift Z not displaying
Exactly
@David Interesting.. I found a native linux program which looked a lot like the accepted answer, but I didn't like it because it insisted on spanning the entire screen. Not good for recording small gifs..
@gandalf3 comments on KeyPosé say it has the same problem
lol
I wonder how hard it would be to whip up a little thing in python
Perhaps with blender operator support? Not sure if that would be possible..
sounds interesting, but past my limited lever of python
00:45
Wait, I have a [ridiculous] idea
I could have an external thing for showing the keypresses, and use a patched version of screencast-keys for the operators (patched so it wouldn't display the keypresses and all that other stuff, only the operators)
when you say "external thing" what do you mean?
Some piece of python, running outside of blender
Perhaps a version of key-mon made up to look and act more like screencast-keys
hmm, sounds like it would work
Random pieces of memory look interesting..
I guess...
00:49
That's the first time I've ever had a gradient in one of those
01:09
@gandalf3 I downloaded KeyCastOW, and after tweaking the settings I like it.
Interesting
Will have a look
Not sure what to do with this.. blender.stackexchange.com/q/23512/599
CV as unclear
But it's perfectly clear what the question is..
The unclear bit is the answer..
And the fact the question even exists :P
@gandalf3 so what is the question? is it something will not render, or something that already rendered is now not showing up?
@David It sounded to me like cycles wasn't in the dropdown menu in the info panel
01:23
O, I did not gather that.
At least the "only blender render and blender game" bit seemed to suggest that was the case..
@David hm.. Maybe it is unclear
It seams much clearer now
now that you explained it
I could be wrong..
The possibility of another interpretation never even occurred to me :P
lol, "when you know your right, you know you are right."

Awesome!
01:38
I just wish there was a way to get rid of the <> around keys.
01:49
I was just wondering that..
They seem quite pointless
I also prefer + over -.. To me it seems odd to use - when combining keypresses, as to me - suggests subtraction.
And subtracting keys seems weird.
But oh well, definitely an improvement ;)
02:06
@gandalf3 you can change the seperator.
Oh nice
@David The top entry in the changelog here seems to suggest it's possible to change the <> things too: brookhong.github.io/2014/04/28/keycast-on-windows.html
02:32
@gandalf3 thanks, got rid of the <> and changed it to []
A little better I guess..
@gandalf3 even better you can get rid of it entirely by setting the combination chars to ` + ` that is space, then the separator, then another space.
it just uses the 3 chars in the order they are in the box
I wondered if that would work ;)
It doesn't seem to work in wine though, doesn't capture input unless I have another wine window active
And I don't feel like running blender in wine..
true
well if you ever go to windows I found a good key display program :)
:)
I'll try my idea later at somepoint
If I have time..
02:37
I know what you mean

@X-27 Here are my suggestions: The headers between the buttons are sufficient division without the multiple colors (That color scheme is common among preschools, not FPS games), Instead I would go for a grey/black theme:
Like this.
The font is Open Sans [light], one of my favorites....
I made the headers bigger, since you felt the division was important.
@David Yes, why? That was one of my favorites....

A: Creating a texture and normal map from a 3D model / scene

gandalf3I think you are looking for Render Baking: Using render baking you can make normal maps, color maps, shadow maps, AO textures, etc. Here is an example, the top wall is a plane with baked normals and render shading from the bottom wall: Note that baking is only available in BI currently, but ...

Has Cycles normal baking been implemented yet?

Q: I am 2 days new to Blender. Need help with animation

Legit NoodlezI am basically trying to make an intro for my youtube channel. I am sort of familiar with the program because I was playing around with it for a long time, getting the basics of it. With the help of youtube videos I am basically done with my project. I put my name in it and everything. I just nee...

Example A. How is this useful to someone who has the same problem who comes to the site in 6 months time?? Just close as duplicate again?
Also, who googles, "I am 2 days new to X, I need help with X"?
Please edit the questions and their titles if you're going to post comments or change tags to make it more useful,,, otherwise leave it.

Q: How to get rid of opened duplicate window

SabuncuAfter I open an additional view of a window, how do I get rid of it? Example below: Dragging to the right/left does not help. I am using 2.72 on Windows 7.

That's a duplicate if I ever saw one . . .
12:31
Oh! Sorry, I'm a newbie here! :P
Don't worry, I found three other ones. Duplicates are not inherently a bad thing, as it makes it easier to find on of them when you do a search on the web.

look at those two answers, it is the exact same script.
@iKlsR what should be done (if anything) with these two answers?
I also protected the questions since it had to bad answers :D

Q: How can I make a camera the active one?

Owen PattersonI have multiple cameras in a scene. What I want to do is to change which one is active. This way I can view the scene from different angles. How would I do this?

15:22
@GiantCowFilms probably was not necessary, but does not hurt.
And then I messed it up.... ooops
how?
(I accidently nabed the wrong one) @iKlsR
@David No idea how I made the mistake, I think I got them both.... (I clicked on the question, and it wasn't protected, so I did it again, but it was the other one)*grones*
if you want it un protected I can vote to unprotected it.
@David Get the right one, this one:

Q: Blender site discouraging own-question answer

A: Make Clouds around the Earth

Vince ScaliaDisclaimer: I just learned this myself, so @NoviceInDisguise can edit it if needed. 1 Create a bright point of light in your scene. This would be planet earth- already created in your case. Glare can't happen without a target. Render the image. 2 At the top of your screen, change the scree...

@VinceScalia Yup, although there is more to it than that to get what he is going for. Andrew Price has a good tutorial on it.
@VinceScalia wasn't the question about clouds?
@NoviceInDisguise Um. in the title I guess. he asked how to make it glow though. You ttaught me how not ten days ago . sob
16:51
You answered part of his question, which is good :) He asked two at once which is the issue . . .
I think duplicating the sphere, scaling slightly, and adding a material would be rather straightforward . . . another avid Blunderer maybe? Oh well.
17:15
hi!!
well howdy now!
17:16
Quite a party!
@Shaiq nothing usually transpires here except hellos and a few rounds of planet game.
@user2859 Hi!
How r u?
And random off-topic discussions . . .
novice i tried what u said right now but it doesn't quite work
@NoviceInDisguise like the weather. which is quite freakish right now.
@Shaiq Hmm . . .
17:17
what do u mean @VinceScalia
@VinceScalia Yeah?
I had an ice storm and 5 inches of snow recently.
@Shaiq metric ton snowflakes.
-5* F this morning
One just landed on my toe OW!!!
Frost Flowers on the pond
17:18
@NoviceInDisguise I love those little guys!
@VinceScalia Really pretty, got some pics before they melted. They look like little crystal ferns.
@NoviceInDisguise i don't know the temp. but we've got at least 5 inches and gonna keep comin for eight more hours.
@NoviceInDisguise or in lars pfeffers tutorial "farns"
You out on the western side of the continent?
@NoviceInDisguise smack dab center. welcome to the rockies.
"wee little farns!"
XD Yeah, that would do it. Maybe in a day or so it'll get out here then.
17:21
@NoviceInDisguise have fun with it. my plow won't work so were kinda stuck here all day.
Novice it workeeed
wow is it snowing there (which i dont know is where)
Novice it workeeed
Snow isn't as fun as it was a few years ao
@Shaiq Cool!
@Shaiq you mean wooooooooorked.
@NoviceInDisguise my dogs love it.
17:22
I bet
I don't like dogs :-P
they also like trying to eat fire, so maybe i shouldn't base my oppinions of of them.
That seems like a good idea XD
@NoviceInDisguise 'Gasp!' dogs are so <strike>cool</strike> fun to be with cause they're so stupid!
Sure . . . I don't know, not my sort of animal.
@NoviceInDisguise I've got one lab who'll pull our sled at >20 mph.
17:24
That sounds ok . . . hmm
@NoviceInDisguise cat person?
Yes, they leave me alone XD
Herding cats is a pain though . . .
@NoviceInDisguise dogs herd cats for free.
true dat . . . just in the wrong direction generally
@NoviceInDisguise pshaw. who cares for direction?
keeps the dogs busy, keeps the cats busy
win win
17:27
When you're herding them it is generally for a reason . . . but yes, a good way to keep them occupied.
@NoviceInDisguise wait i just realized you said herding.
Like a great Oregon cat drive?
Stampede!
XD Cat stampede!
@NoviceInDisguise That would be frightening.
@Shaiq This is what we mean by random off topic discussions . . .
They're sharp on five of six ends.
@NoviceInDisguise lol yes!
17:29
@VinceScalia I agree with you there, cats can be pretty nasty when they want to be . . .
and they shed ewwwww.
and lick themselves ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
@NoviceInDisguise we nabbed a cat of the street once cause my sister wanted to and it destroyed our carpet just so it could poop.
alright gtg now. @Shaiq if you need help you holler, kk?

That is AWESOME!!!
Do not worry, I have not textured anything yet, nor will the buildings look like cubes later on
the monkeys are armor tests
just changed the coloring of the build menu, haven't changed the spacing or font yet.
18:21
Looking really cool!
you like the cartoon looking cube moddling?
Good enough for beta, but it really needs some nice textures ;-)
18:47
@David If they apply to the post it shouldn't be a problem but I don't think they both do. Left a comment on one.

@NoviceInDisguise I'm mainly trying to get the mechanics and logic working, once that does I can prettyify it.
Exactly. It just complicates things and makes it harder to troubleshoot if done prematurely.
@X-27 you just using logic bricks?
@VinceScalia Only logic aside from a minor script to position new buildings.
if more functions come along that are practically impossible with logic I'll be using more python, but for now only a Very small amount of the game will work from python.

Q: Is it advisable to update Blender to the newest version as soon as possible each time?

unknownprotocolI know Blender is free software and bugs happen. But my question is, is it good practice to update Blender every time there is an update? Even if a minor one?
