I apologize for the following content of my cerebral cortex, but I have to admit, it might be good advice if you ever find yourself in this situation, so I figured I ought to pass it along in the interest of public safety:

Rule # 1: Never Run With a Spork in Your Hand - you might fall and it might get knocked out of your hand.

Good luck out there, and stay safe!
Over and out.

Q: Overuse of images in answers

ideasman42Some answers are including images just to show a menu-item. eg: original post I'm concerned that doing this too much makes posts harder to update (if blender changes), where: 3D View Header -> Mesh -> Clean up -> Fill Holes ... would do just as well. My question is, should we discourage u...

I was trying to think of something neat to make and spirographs came to mind, so I started to make one with a particle emitter. Kind of neat, but some of these look like they'd be really neat to try in 3D with like glittering particle trails:
https://www.google.com/search?q=spirograph&num=100&safe=off&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS511US512&espv=210&es_sm=119&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=_aonU9OiH8PlyAHgxYBw&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAg&biw=1076&bih=603
I wonder if it's somehow possible to extrude along a path like that so you could make the path an object?

Q: Is it possible to extrude along a curved path like those made by a spirograph?

Thom Blair IIII was looking at spirograph drawings and I was wondering if Blender has any way of extruding along such a path so that it could be turned into a mesh object. Here's a link to some spirograph pictures: https://www.google.com/search?q=spirograph&num=100&safe=off&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS511US512&espv=210&es...

Paul Nylander has some code for making neat 3D geometric designs:
http://www.bugman123.com/Math/index.html
His Reaction-Diffusion texture would be a really neat one to learn how to make
When you go down the page to "Homography of a Logarithmic Spiral", that's my room there! I bought a copy of that picture from him and had it professionally printed...I love the rainbow colors and the swirling...plus that dinosaur tiling is SO awesome!
:)
Actually, we don't live in that house anymore...sad but true. I have a much smaller room now so I can't easily hang it in my room. A gem to save for a future wall of mine!
:)
@vader @iklsr @charlesL @stacker @gandalf3 @petervaro Hey guys, did you see this post above about Paul Nylander's 3d animated mathematical art? Check it out!

Q: Render every Nth frame of an animation

DavidI want to render every Nth frame of an animation, in this case every 12th frame. This way I can play back the animation at 2fps and see if everything is going correctly. I'm a real novice with Blender Python and cobbled this together: import bpy for f in range(startframe, endframe,NthFrame): ...

Q: Is there any way to edit parameters for an object after it is created?

Thom Blair IIIFor example, when you first add a cylinder, you have the option to change the number of vertices, etc, but once you do anything else in blender, it seems you no longer can edit those parameters. Is there a setting anywhere or an addon that allows these parameters to be edited later on? If not, ho...

Gizelle P.This may sound stupid idk but my message sensor can't seem to read the message sent by one of my actuators? Q: I don't seem to have blur node.. using v2.69

robmackFollowing along in tutorials I see the blur filter being used. I am using Blender 2.69 and I can't locate it visually or even with a search. Actually, there is no "Filters" category at all. Do I have to download something to get it? Any help would be appreciated Many thanks, --Rob

Q: SpaceNavigator, Linux and blender: How to configure Blender?

tuxtorielI have since yesterday a SpaceNavigator (from 3Dconnection). I got it to work with the demo apps (xcube and xvalue). But it doesn't do anything with Blender. I did not find any posts about it except some "it will be possible in 2.48" or "there's a plug-in for 2.46" (should I use it? Because I...

17:49
@ThomBlairIII I think for an app to have construction history it needs to be developed like that from the get go
You mean blender, not just an addon?
yeah
That'd make sense.
Too bad.
its foundation needs to be set up for it
What are you up to today?
17:51
stuff
stuff...hmm...
:)
what about you?
don't say stuff
or a synonym for stuff
I have so many things on my mind I'd like to look into but I haven't figured out which ones to focus on...
I see
I will indeed avoid stuff-related words
I'd like to see if somehow I can get some of Paul Nylander's equations into the XYZ mesh
but math is SO not my thing that I will have to just see if I can blunder my way through it
17:55
it looks complicated
actually, the spirograph idea looked pretty neat, might be good looking too if it could be made to kind of look like a 3d firework display
it looks REALLY complicated...he must be super smart with math
yeah
I saw you're making the airplane you mentioned...which parts are you working on now?
did you find a good propeller source or info?
I am working on the chasis
I had this thought about this feature I just saw in one of Andrew P's videos about "mean crease" that can be really useful when modeling with a subsurface modifier
are you an aviation buff?
I knew a guy that was building an entire real airplane in his basement over many years!
are you working from blueprints or just winging it (pun intended)
!! pun !!
18:02
blue prints ofc
(checks urban dictionary...)
GOT IT! of course!
ofc
I keep Urban dictionary on my browser toolbar to I can figure out all the slang I never had when I was not using the internet.
I basically didn't use the internet until 2007
for personal use that is
until then I only used it to find resources for work
as such, I'm a BIT behind the times on many internet-related fronts...
so how much time do you usually spend on blender, like making your model?
I also do not know all acronyms
utterly invaluable for gents like us
actually, I just realized you've never let on whether you're male or female, but I just assumed male since darth was male
I am going to guess you are 32 years old
sometimes I'm very luck with guessing numbers
odd thing to be lucky with
next thought obviously is lottery, but no, I never play it
not THAT lucky
well, I hate to break it to you but I am not 32
there goes that idea down the drain
arg! foiled by my brain yet again! >:(
omg, who ever is in charge of dealing with the drains in my brain has his or her hands full
18:14
are you 41?
indeed, I am
just turned.
good time to be alive
happy birthday
???
oh, not THAT recently, but kinda near
ohkay
I'm looking forward to turning 42...even in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy it's said to be the meaning of life
do you read scifi?
do you have any videos or tutorials on youtube?
it's pretty cool that blender comes with screencasting abilities
I didn't know that until just recently
I thought everyone had their own software for it
but then again I didn't get blender until just recently so it's not so surprising that I didn't know about it before that
18:20
I think most ppl still use other software for screen casting
really? I've never used blender's, I use Camtasia
it works really well, I'm really impressed with it
although it's editing capabilities are way less than what I'd like
I mean, it's not like after effects or anything, which would be ideal
I also use camtasia
nice
I wish they had more volume control
I only use it to make gifs
oh, you mean animated ones?
I was wondering what software people use to make them
have you ever seen Photoline? it's a great photoshop alternative, or has been for me at least
18:25
I use ps, all alternatives suck compared to it in one way or anither
well, that's utterly true
nothing can compare to ps
I mean I am not a fan of PS but I have used gimp and gimp sucks
I've only used gimp to make normal maps
why are you not a fan of ps?
I am not into 2d as much as I am into 3d
oh yeah, 2D is kinda flat & boring compared to 3d ... so few possibilities unless you are serious artistic skills...so it's hard to make something neat & original without cut & paste etc in 2d
blender, though, has all the lighting figured out for you in so many ways
texturing is a breeze in blender if you're trying to make a still image that looks even vaguely real, as compared to how hard that'd be in 2d
so I stick to either desktop publishing or abstract art in 2d
mostly
I wish I had my Mom's artistic skills...check out this painting she made of my brother....
just a sec
she's into watercolors right now
I wish I had even an iota of her skill in fine art
here's the one she did of me...
aw, I can't find it...
18:40
not bad
indeed, not bad...
:)
that concludes my 2d skills
whoa! picasso MOVE OVER!
:)
:D
do you have a tablet?
I mean like a wacom?
18:43
no
I used to
no idea where it went
I don't but I was trying to see if you did that with a stylus
A mouse
and mspaint
no idea where it went...hmmm...that makes me want to break out my sherlock holmes deducing emoticon
\;|ƅ
Hmm...
based on that sentence, I would guess that you are over the age of 10
\;|ƅ
Hmm...
yes
And that you've moved out on your own enough times that you could lose things in the move or something like that...
\;|ƅ
Hmm...
that's his pipe in his mouth, btw
18:46
hmm.
I don't even see tha face
I had to search my font books for a good pipe...
ok, hold on
\;ᐡ|ƅ
I had to subscript the nose & pipe to get the face perfect
and of course rotate it 90 deg
over the age of 10, lived long enough to lose a wacom tablet, even though he's very computer adept...
hmm...
ok, type a random bunch of characters on the keyboard
did you ever read sherlock holmes books?
he would be able to deduce the exact neighborhood the person came from based on the type of dirt on his shoes...
OH isee
he could just look at you figure out everything about you
I'm not quite that good yet, although I suspect you have a tendency towards the dark side...
hmm...
:)
speaking of which, did you know that in sanskrit there is a technique called the kechari mudra and literally translated, that can be "the sky-walker techniques"
and I can perform it!
it's a VERY rare ability
in english it's called having a hypermobile tongue
hence, I must ask, do you know my mother more than my supposed father does?
XD
19:08
What?
what what?
what are you whating about?
what a weird word "what"
that video is weird
indeed, it is a very rare ability...
as of 2006, there are only two reported cases of hypermobile tongues with a normal frenulum in all medical literature written in English!
(Source: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Endoscopic+view+of+a+hypermobile+tongue+in+the+nasopharynx.-a0152574057 )
(Source: http://www.nature.com/bdj/journal/v212/n2/full/sj.bdj.2012.54.html )
are you proud of it?
well, it's more of a conversational piece rather than something to be super proud of
just a fun fact
19:11
oh I see
what is your father's name?
Thom
you can deduce that from the fact that my name is Thom Blair III
would you name you kid thom?
@ThomBlairIII I was just checking
I'd have to think about it...I'm not sure a dynasty is called for yet
maybe I'd only do it if I could get him to sign an agreement that we'd go all the way to like Thom the XIV or something like that, just to make sure that it'd be worth all the confusion it would bring when someone yells out "THOM" in the house
maybe I could get my own TV show about us if we did it though
I could be like George Foreman
he named every single one of his kids George Foreman, even his daughter: Georgina Foreman
@ThomBlairIII how will you make an infant sign a piece of paper?
I know, there are a few kinks to be worked out of the final plan, but I have time...
maybe I'll just have him "make his mark" on the paper...
Hmmm.....
if I were to tape a pen to his hand and put the paper near it, perhaps the courts would consider it legally binding, but I might have to hire some AIG lobbyists to get the supreme court to rule in my favor
already???!
(though it's only been built for linux so far)
it's a day early!
premature
@gandalf3 anything I should be excited about?
yeah, what're the details?
19:18
@Vader Not if you've been using the development versions already..
I see
any cool things? can cycles do fire yet?
or god rays?
@ThomBlairIII It can!!
so-called "God rays"
19:19
wow! cool!
can the camera be in the volume?
#totallyworthit!
@Vader No.. That's planned for 2.71
But no fire yet
Okay
wait, what do you mean no fire? I thought you said it can?
19:20
@Vader However, you can give the world a volume material and it works
Oh, that's cool
@ThomBlairIII It can do god rays, but not fire
oh, I see
well, some is better than none
any other things you really like about it?
wait, what?
some new features for cycles are better than no new features for cycles
19:22
My network is being really slow...
I.. hang on
@vader sorry for the slight misinformation regarding the Foreman children:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Foreman#Family_and_private_life
@Gandalf3 thanks, I'll check it out!
@ThomBlairIII Well, this is nice
alas, it will be some time before I ever have use for thread-related features
@ThomBlairIII You use it every time you use a modifier..
oh
nvm, that's not in this release
really? All I know about threads is that if you have multiple cpus, or gpus maybe, you can choose how many threads/processors to allocate to Blender
19:28
Most CPUs nowadays have multiple cores, which blender can now start taking advantage of for more things
Nice.
I've only got 2.
#corechallenged
@ThomBlairIII 2>1 ;)
definitely!!
I used to only have 1..
But now I have 4
awesome! all cpus or some gpus?
19:30
They are CPU cores (built into the single CPU chip that goes on the motherboard)
nice! and so you also have a gpu too?
I have a GTX 460
I got none....in fact, my graphics card/thingy has a known defect that lets it overheat & die easily
:(
I have to keep it nice & cool
19:32
:/
luckily I found a cpu throttling app so I don't have to stick my laptop in the fridge when I render anymore...that was REALLY bugging me
that's actually not a joke...I did have to use the fridge a couple of times before I found the throttling app
o.O
I haven't heard that one before..
i know...why does apple not make their computers able to not die in a heartbeat
it's totally freaking weird that they allow apps to use 195% of the cpu according to their resource manager app
19:35
I don't know anything about apples (well, I know that they are are often red, with a bit of SSS and have a stem).. :P
XD
I don't get the 15:35sss
??
You mean the SubSurfaceScattering bit?
@gandalf3 oh, sorry, that's the chat time showing up like it looks like you typed that...
oh
I see
19:38
lulz
That's funny, over here it says 12:35 !?
I was like, wow, new blender lingo

hm
I guess
I thought everything was in UTC..
idk
it's 3:41pm eastern standard time here in Virginia, USA
are you in europe?
Nope
no, wait, sorry, lulz, california?

I can't remeber which is which..
@ThomBlairIII Essentially
the far side of the US
gotcha
Arg.. I'm having slow internets and it's randomly scrambling and duplicating my chats!!
that is a bummer...do you live out of town where there's slow internet?
I had that REALLY bad for a long time
Not really
before I moved into town
19:43
It's supposed to go 3MB a second
And it usually does
!
did you see the news about pCell?
Except now it's going ~3 bytes a second :P
maximum bandwidth for each user no matter how many users are using
@ThomBlairIII What's that?

@ThomBlairIII o.O
I bet they're doing the same thing with MakeHuman right now: UNRELEASE!! QUICK!!
@leathe Hey Leathe!
19:48
@ThomBlairIII ^^ That's what it looks like, in case you were wondering..
(It comes with a blender t-shirt :D)
2.56 Tb/s = is ~335GB/s!!!!
@gandalf3 looks cool, but I'll just have to wait. no real burning need for it right now anyway.
sorry, it's 327.68GB/s
The yottabyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information. is it just that pirates are generally neat?
@ThomBlairIII That's phabricator, not blender
I always associated the "ph"ing to be associated with nefarious hackers
What's phabricator?
20:02
@ThomBlairIII No one seems to know why..
@ThomBlairIII It's the name of the phramework they are using for the bug tracker/git repo
(that's my Sherlock Holmes "deducing" emoticon)
interesting...I've never heard of phramework before...
lulz
ok, cya!
