RELOAD! There are 4813 unanswered questions (90.2793% answered)
Well, at least one of our trains isn't hindered by the snow.
@Mast It just seems so surreal, but I guess it makes sense. Power on had some serious issues.
@202_accepted With almost shorted caps? Gee, I wonder why it had issues :-)
When your caps die, even simply throwing them away is better than leaving them on.
On the transformer circuit no less lol
@202_accepted Heavy ecaps like that (1000uF and up) are usually on the powerboard. They reduce the ripple from the rectifier.
They're standard in AC to 12-24VDC converters.
If it's a multi-step process, they'll even be used on ALL DC steps.
12:06 AM
Well these were at the front of power input, there's a second set behind them then a 1mF or something cap further back. (It's huge.)
1mF is the same as 1000uF though.
If you want to see a really big cap, try one from a car subwoofer. They can be 1-2 F.
Right, I meant 1F lol
lol
(Mental math isn't with me tonight.)
At some point, caps stop looking like caps. Like this one:
It's 20F. But the 10F version looks just the same.
The moment you find one of those in your monitor, it's doubling as subwoofer.
Imagine how slow the power-on response time would get.
12:12 AM
Jesus
At my last job, we had a board which was used as a capacitor array to compensate inductive charge. Over 50 470uF ecaps per board, multiple boards per unit.
Looked seriously impressive while doing not an awful lot and consisting of low-tech (though hiqh-quality) components.
Of-course, there's always amateurs trying to do the same thing.
Ours looked better :-)
No kidding.
I want to, one day, get out of software engineering and start a hardware engineering company or something. I've always liked it more.
@202_accepted It's a lot more paperwork though.
Hardware isn't self-documenting.
12:18 AM
@Mast Oh yeah, especially in the U.S., FCC, etc.
Regulatory stuff here is a PITA.
FCC isn't your main problem, as long as you keep their guidelines in your design process. Which nobody does.
So you're fixing all the EMC crap after the product is already produced.
Which sucks all the fun out of it.
Yeah, I'd probably make sure I do initial prototyping, then have a person / team do the MVP. Me: R, team: D, company: $$$.
Electronics is great, if you can find the right job. Which is bloody difficult.
Oh well.
I'm going to make an attempt at getting some sleep. Night all.
Later man, enjoy some sleep.

@Hosch250 which types of VMs? e.g. Vmware? virtualbox? And do you have a later version of IE installed or are you on a different platform?
@Hosch250 later versions of IE/Edge have an Emulation tab in the developer tools where earlier versions can be simulated... see here for more context...
Also, the IE VMs are available for various VM platforms like VirtualBox, Vagrant, HyperV, VPC, Parallels, VmWare
On Windows 10 (not the earliest, not the latest), with IE 11.
I've heard emulation doesn't always cut it.
@Hosch250 yeah it isn't optimal
Also, I can't run some VM's because this device is encrypted (notably Hyper-V).

This should've been caught weeks ago.
@Mast darn I think I was sleeping :|
@SamOnela The system isn't airtight. I don't catch them all either.
The idea behind is that since there's usually multiple people around, the chance somebody will get it is quite high.
So we catch a lot of them.
But you can't make it airtight unless you appoint people to timeslots or something like that. That's too far.
