I thought you left code out, but yes, I have never seen empty braces. The best code (IMHO), is simple, clean, self-explanatory (no comments necessary! use meaningful var/method names) code. I do find that hard to read, so yah perhaps they need some practice. Just do code reviews and make comments on the commits or pull requests, in our company, we take criticism as a positive note to get better — Luke Hutton 1 min ago
And for the record, I wouldn't write those either way. The empty blocks are silly IMHO. But there also appears to be opportunity to reduce duplication in your code, as the basic expressions are the same, just with different values, and you can assign the negation of the expression to your bool variable instead of setting it explicitly to false. That's more of a codereview.stackexchange.com feedback, which may or may not address your question about the conversation with the developer. — Peter Duniho 32 secs ago
Okay... I get that. The question isn't really about talking to the employee, but would other devs consider this to be proper code. The workplace.stackexchange site isn't code specific. But I did find a code review site... So maybe I'll try that. — Digital Camel 23 secs ago

Agree with @Plutonix, it is hard to understand by this isolated incident what the problem is. Do introduce the code reviews into the process and just comment saying 'hey how about we do this instead?' — zaitsman 31 secs ago
about shortening the code... like any time you wish, there's ton of cruft, you should rather keep values in registers than in memory, put print code as whole into subroutine, etc... I did similar answer on codereview site, you may check it for some tricks and ideas (and forcing you to use loop is evil): codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/148315/…Ped7g 33 secs ago

@SimonForsberg I can't see deleted answers, but provided this was the one stating 'you should use another language instead' I don't see how such a statement constitutes an answer. It's not a review, it's a stupid remark which is generally unhelpful to the author. This case being different doesn't make it right to make such a remark. Sure, it could've been part of an answer. Greetings, User

My very first flag on Stack Overflow, way back in 2012, was this:
> This is not the right answer, according to the community itself. – Simon Forsberg Apr 27 '12 at 22:51
The result was: declined - flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies, or an altogether wrong answer

@Vogel612 Oh, whoops, that bumped it back up in activity, didn't it?

This is even a standard decline reason for flags

FWIW there is some debate whether that should still apply for outdated answers..

The answer that I flagged back then was this:

A: Java Collections copy list - I don't understand

Now the answer has been edited and significantly improved.

@Peilonrayz: My guess would be "close for offtopic". The OP isn't even asking for direct feedback on the code, just for how it would perform (he should be able to run some benchmarks on his own, we don't know his machine/environment) and if there is a better solution (which by itself is more fitting for SO, so it might be up for migration, but I doubt it would be accepted there either)

4:17 PM
@hoffmale Asking for performance, whether big O or raw speed, here is on-topic. If there were nothing to make me think it's off-topic it'd be perfectly reviewable. Apart from it doesn't look like it's their code, or they know what it's doing

Note, the programming-challenge tag isn't appropriate without the problem statement and the entire solution being up for review. I'd warmly recommend you edit your question to include the problem statement in block quotes, and your entire solution in a code block. — Mat's Mug ♦ 6 secs ago

@Peilonrayz: Ok, maybe my interpretation was a bit too fast and maybe a little biased on the "performance" front. (Good thing I didn't do anything!)
Quoting the help center: "Here are some examples of questions that are unsuitable for Code Review.

I think it falls under "understanding code snippets" (and maybe troubleshooting, as it apparently isn't fast enough).

meh, IME when it's not 110% crystal-clear what a question should be closed for, it's better to just let it be. downvote, perhaps, but err on the "on-topic" side of the fence.

@hoffmale Possibly, this is where it confuses me. As it's like it should be off-topic but not really. It's not really asking 'here's some code I found, what does it do', or 'how do I fix this error', it's more like 'here's my stolen code, make it better, and let me steal it'...

Q: Markdown to HTML converter

BarryI'm working on a few C++ language proposals, and it's easier to collaborate with coauthors if we write it in markdown rather than directly in raw HTML. My colleague uses bikeshed to do this translation, but I had a style sheet that I've been working on for a while that I wanted to maintain, so I ...

How would you abbreviate: country ?

@Marc-Andre: maybe "area" or "loc"? (in which context is it needed?)

Well I need to convert rules name from more than 50 characters to <= 50 (and keeping the original word)

"cntry" then?
though that looks quite similar to entry :/

@Marc-Andre CNTRY is quite standard in old systems designed in the '70s that had limited characters for field names
why do you need to abbreviate it anyway?

Rules names are now validated, so we need to convert some names to fit 50 characters

I'm pretty sure "country" is <50 chars, even in German ;-)

6:45 PM
Ahahah yeah I just don't want to post the rule name :)
The name are really awful and it's work code so I can't share :S
I'm an idiot... I was abbreviation Damage as Dam... Why does it takes a day to remember taht DMG is wayyy more common. I'm a big gamer too. oh gosh

lol

7:11 PM
@Mat'sMug soo ... it's 4 characters
just saying
@Marc-Andre this seems wrong from a data warehousing PoV... what's your goal?
aka. Why does it need to be exactly 50 chars?

@Vogel612 "Land"?

It's business rules in an xml files read by an external software. We updated the version and now they validated rules name

is the external software's data ever perused by people?
or do you control how the data is displayed?
because this sounds like a job for a hash

It's displayed but this code is part of the "base", we customize an application

7:16 PM
first instinct: don't automate it
if it's important, make a user look at it before you migrate

It's technical side of the business so we are the ones who looks at those business rules

This sounds like it'd be a great fit over on Code Review. Post it there, and maybe I can give you some reviews/pointers? — Thomas Ward just now
If this is working code, you can post here: codereview.stackexchange.com and ask for ways to improve your code. Make sure you understand the posting rules before posting their. — jfriend00 11 secs ago

@irc10216 More problematic is that your question is a bit unclear: is your code working? Does it do what you expect it to do? If there are errors, please show them. Or are you looking for another solution? If your code works but you want to know what can be improved, it could be besster suited for Codereview. — Modus Tollens 7 secs ago

Wrong site. If you have working code that you're just looking for peer review to suggest improvements, there's a site for that here called Code Review. This site is for asking questions about specific problems you're having with code or a programmers tool. — Ken White 24 secs ago
