That's hilarious
@Mat'sMug, I agree and have flagged to close. Does this code actually run? You've used Range("H2:H" & LastRowColumnA) but LastRowColumnA hasn't been populated and will cause a run-time error. Also, tidy up your indentation before posting on Code Review. — Mark Fitzgerald 14 secs ago

Monking
@EBrown That's probably at least partly to blame. If you're using an ADC, look in the datasheet of it for it's resolution.
It usually 'guesses' at least the last bit.
@Mast It's not an ADC, it's some sort of serial signal pattern.
But the sensor has a very low-sensitivity.
It's +/-2C.
The better sensor comes in Wednesday it looks like.
It has a sensitivity of +/-0.5C

Ugh.
"We think this is correct" vs. the experiences of users.
"This won't happen: 'Toggle Comment' is to quickly and temporarily comment out (and later uncomment) a section of code. Therefore the comment always has to start at the first column."

I thought comments were for commenting first, disabling code as some sort of side-effect feature second.

If your code is working and you want to improve it, I suggest posting your question on the CodeReview StackExchange — Aaron 11 secs ago
Folks on CodeReview routinely propose better algorithms without being asked to, their review doesn't stop on the user's implementation. Just mention in your post that your goal is to have the code return in less than x period of time and I'm sure you'll quickly have better answers than you would have here :) That might spoil what you're trying to reach with these challenges though. In that respect I'd suggest trying to do other challenges and coming back to this one later from scratch — Aaron 37 secs ago

Hello again.
Why does Java have to be so pendantic about exceptions?
I find it incredibly hard to not write a bullshit program that just reads

Type variableName;
try {
// a thousand lines of code that throw 1..n exceptions
variableName = eventuallyInitializeTheDamnThing();
return variableName;
catch (Exception ex) {
pleaseJustLetMeContinueWritingMyCode();
}
return null;
I'm just running in circles with that mess.
hehe.... why does JavaScript have to be so lax about exceptions ..... ;-)
Java exception handling is significantly improved by using an IDE, @kleinfreund .....
Which one are you using?
I started using Eclipse.
eww... well it's better than Netbeans
I just slammed in:

initializingMethod() {
try {
all usual code
} catch (SomeEx ...) {
throw new RuntimeException();
}
}
And cheaper than IntelliJ
That's not that bad honestly, @kleinfreund - just change the throw clause to include the caught exception.....
} catch (SomeEx e) {
    throw new RuntimeException(e);
}
17:23
IntelliJ is significantly better than Eclipse, IMO... even using only the Community version
@rolfl Yeah, reasonable.
Although having the whole logic be indented by having a surrounding try-block seems like a code smell to me.
You'll have to trust me that, yes, exception handling in Java requires a bunch of "boilerplate", and some languages are better than others at boilerplate management (and Java is not the best), but that the IDE can be used as a boilerplate AI.
Monking
The actual exception model in Java can be very, very useful when compared to other systems, though.
I kinda like Eclipse. It’s fast for now. Sure, it ain’t no Sublime Text.
17:25
It's a monkey :o
In my opinion, the way you handle exceptions tells me more about you as a programmer than the way you handle the "happy case". People who understand exceptional code paths, anticipate them, and can debug them, are the experts.
If only IDEs had such sophisticated ways of navigating/manipulating code like for example Sublime.
I’m just saying multiple cursors.
Eclipse's refactoring systems are very powerful.... and multi-cursor editors encourage copypasta code.
@rolfl I get that, but it really makes life as a beginner in the language hard. I just feel overwhelmed and unprepared.
@rolfl The refactoring system is nice and powerful, indeed.
As a beginner, just add throws Exception to every method ;-)
17:27
However having context-free multiple cursors is also helpful.
Sublimes Ctrl-D is such a helpful tool.
In fairness, I have never familiarized myself with mult-cursor editors.
For it’s so easy to use and can be utilized to do so many nice things.
Also, it's been a really long time, @kleinfreund ... good to hear from you... ;p
@rolfl If you want to try one thing out, let it me Ctrl-D in Sublime (or whatever other editors use for that functionality)
@rolfl Yeah. :D
I stopped by some days ago, though.
Heh, I stopped stopping by 2 years ago, I only recently started again.
17:30
(Recap: Select a string. Pressing Ctrl-D will select the next string matching the selected string. Pressing Ctrl-D again will select the next instance and so on.)
Eclipse can do that, but contextualizes it based on the semantics of the selected code (like the next reference to a variable, or class, etc.)
@rolfl It really depends on what kind of programs you're making
I was meaning Java specifically ^^^
And I just realized at work in our proprietary language we don't really deal with the unhappy cases... hmm
@rolfl Yeah, but toy or enterprise
I believe that rethrowing exceptions, wrapping them, or just letting them escape in the method signature is fine. That system is commonly used in toy-code.... it's the things like this that frustrate me:
} catch (SomeException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
}
17:33
Whatever you do, don't swallow
More importantly, whatever you do, Have a plan!
(even if the plan is to rethrow).

If you're asking about improvement of working code, the better site to ask is SE Code Review (do not cross post questions please). For Stack Ovrflow that question appears too broad, since there's a load of possibilities to improve your code. — πάντα ῥεῖ 26 secs ago

Q: Socket.io socket functions

madpropsIs it normal for each socket to have a copy of all the socket events? For example: socket.on('topic_change', function (data) { if(socket.username !== undefined) { var info = get_roominfo(socket.room); if(info.key !== data.key && info.okey !== da...

While you might have been taught to, that wasn't the recommended standard, making your code non-idiomatic for the language. It's a good idea to read/adopt the Ruby style-guides and enable Rubocop in your editor. Failing to do so will definitely raise questions in code reviews. — the Tin Man 13 secs ago
webcams of the world, unite!
18:52
:o what kind of webcams
Load there was about a half million requests per minute (that actually got through). We're working on blocking compromised webcams now.
I doubt it's actually what you'd consider webcams - probably a mix of different IoT devices
I wonder if we should refer to S3 as a fog service since it's down
I'm thinking this question would probably be better suited for [codereview.stackexchange.com/]. Their description for fitting questions is "Improve code that you wrote or maintain, through peer review." and I see a lot of design questions in that community. — themantimes8 1 min ago

Q: UML diagram for learning design patterns

user3667111Scenario: So I have recently developed some code which solves the sliding tile puzzle in minimum number of moves, using a variety of search algorithms including breadth-first search(BFS) , and some heuristic search algorithms such as the A* algorithm and Iterative deepening A*(IDA*). The code is...

My suggestion: post a complete program with the input, the timing information, timing information of the FORTRAN program. Of course, such a post will be better at codereview.stackexchange.com/R Sahu 45 secs ago

CodeReview would be the best StackExchange for this kind of question :) — Aaron 35 secs ago

Q: Code continues to run but stops printing to console

TaxpayersMoneyI am planning to build a (very) basic monte carlo tree search AI for connect 4 (I know it's been solved but this is just a simple project so I can play with MCTS). So far I managed to write some code to run a simulation of a game with both players choosing randomly. Before I go too far down the M...

StackOverflow is not a debugging service. If you are having trouble with something, you need to explain what that something actually is. Don't just throw code around and expect someone to debug it for you. You might also try asking on CodeReview instead. — Remy Lebeau 45 secs ago

A better fit would be to post this on Code Review. Code reviews are generally off topic for this site. — Thomas Matthews 45 secs ago

Q: Inquiry about answer to A phone troubleshooting program?

97980I have a question about an answer which @Caridorc wrote to a question by the title of A phone troubleshooting program, which can be seen here: A phone troubleshooting program. @Caridorc answered this: SOLUTIONS = { {"android" : True, "software" : True, "turns_on" : False} : "Keep holding the pow...

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because code reviews or how can I improve my program, belong on Code Review. — Thomas Matthews 53 secs ago

I believe my question is the first one and you know what everyone has just been pushing me around on stack exchange sites. I went to Code review first and for some reason they closed down my question as well. I don't understand what I have done wrong, if you do not get the question then tell me which part need improving don't just obnoxiously close down the question. Do you hear your tones? seriously I mean "day one stuff" maybe some people don't learn as fast as others. — 97980 45 secs ago
