@Peilonrayz It's a design question.
He isn't looking at existing code, he pulled 2 examples from somewhere and doesn't know which one to use.
At least, that's how I'm reading it.
He's asking 'which should I use, A or B' while there's possibly a better alternative C available.
We don't know, he doesn't tell what he's doing.
He's clearly doing string concatenation...
10:14
Did you follow the last link in my comment?
Yes I read it all, and I can't see what the problem is. In fact the code in the answer is in a worse state IMO than this question.
@Peilonrayz there is no code in an answer ..
also template interpolation is the idiomatic JS way to go about this ...
For all we know he's actually using some framework on the side which could do it in a more elegant way. Or he's building it server-side. Or <blanks here>.
@Peilonrayz ooh ... true, but the same principle applies
10:17
@Vogel612 Which would be a good candidate for solution C which he didn't mention. We won't know whether it's acceptable in his case either, because we don't know anything.

Morning
Monking
Hmmm anyone wants to be a little duck for me?
If I'm working with 8-bit unsigned integers... Then 2 + (4 * -3) is the same as 2 + (4 * 253), right? Both equal "-10" = 246
IIRC yeah
if you work with 8bit unsigned integers, -3 doesn't exist
but yea, that's right.
11:28
1014 - 256 - 256 - 256 = 246
Basically you got 246 after 3 overflows.
@Vogel612 And that's exactly why in the middle case everything went wrong
My whole BF program assumes all numbers are unsigned, and while optimizing I introduced a signed number :D
So why did you use an unsigned number?
Because BF memory is unsigned
Right. So what was the result of your equation instead of 246?
I don't even want to know :D
11:36
@skiwi the best part about this is the fact that you can't even have unsigned primitives in java ...
@Vogel612 Not my issue here :p
but one that intensifies the problem
Hm not sure how
you could just run all operations through a mod 256
Yeah going to do that
11:37
@skiwi because you don't get type-checking against signed numbers
Though I think I need ((number % 256) + 256) % 256
Uh, why?
because signum
@Vogel612 It's the ASM code that uses unsigned numbers, no type checking in there anyway :D
Oh, right.
11:39
mod just guarantees results between ]-bound,bound[
Are you sure those brackets are correct? :D
yea. those are exclusive bounds
well, one way to write exclusive bounds..
the other would be to use parens, but that's IMO less clear
Oh, I didn't know that then
Grmblblbl, it still doesn't work

@Mast It's a community wiki answer. I don't see a problem about that.
@Mast When it's community wiki, the author does not get any reputation on it, and if anyone can see what the end result is, they can.
@SimonForsberg No, that's not the problem. The problem is why it isn't removed.
ohmigawd. SVN caches passwords in plaintext .. in your user-directory ....
11:55

@Mast Because removing it would not help anyone.
@Vogel612

Not removing it wouldn't help anyone either.
@Mast University infrastructure. Frankly speaking, I'm almost happy we even have a possibility to VCS on University servers
11:56
@Mast AFAIK it has been discussed on meta before and CW answers that say "This is what I ended up with" was okay.
@Mast If anyone knows what the end result is, see the cleanuped version, they can.
@Vogel612 Ah, right, we had SVN at a previous company, but since all those computers where behind a portal and massive firewall anyway, it didn't matter much.
@SimonForsberg How does that defend inconsistency with the rules?
@Mast I don't see any inconsistency. And I refuse to blindly follow the rules without knowing why.

Haha, don't worry, I'm not fussed up about it or anything.

@Stud Seems like only crazy people would read about compiler design
@skiwi So, right up your alley?
I was actually thinking about reading it..
Looks like an old book, might be terribly out of date.
There's been a movement in C-land where old tricks fell out of favour.
I was looking for a c++ approach, it is the closest I found so far.
13:09
If you're looking for a C++ approach, that's definitely not the book you're looking for.
It looks like all the book about compilers are general and not very implementation oriented.
But I'll keep looking. You're probably right about this one
@Mast I guess...
@Stud What are you looking for exactly, a C++ compiler written in C++?
@Mast That would be perfect, because I want to 1) understand how C++ works under the hood 2) Practice more C++ on a project that gives me all the time I want to think and design stuffs.
It might be worth the read, but don't expect everything to be relevant
13:16
@skiwi I though that it could give me a general idea of what compilers do. But there might be some books out there that will bring me more than just that.
One example is integer increment... I heard that before Pentium 4 writing INC <register> in ASM was faster than ADD <register>, 1, then afterwards ADD <reg>, 1 was guaranteed to be always at least as fast as INC <reg>, because the INC instruction can cause a partial flag register stall and since a very recent Intel CPU generation there is no partial flag register stall possible anymore (at least not with INC), so INC <reg> is actually faster again
@Stud Let me quickly search through my tabs
@Stud This one looks pretty recent, 2010.
284 pages so it can't be very complete, but should give you a general idea.
@Stud This is a good resource IMO: tutorialspoint.com/compiler_design/index.htm
Downloading is a bit of a hassle, but with a throw-away e-mail address you should be ok.
Just a starter resource, recall that non-books most often are not very good resources
13:21
@Mast thank you, the title is promising.
@skiwi Yes it looks like a general introduction to what a compiler is. There's a good change I'll learn from this
If the program works as expected, you may want to ask on Code Review how your code can be improved. — assylias 42 secs ago

Monking @EthanBierlein
What are you asking is good or bad? The fact that you are faster your the way your code looks/behaves? If it is the latter do note that code review is off topic here as they have their own site. — NathanOliver 22 secs ago
@Vogel612 @Mast So somehow... this was not an issue
And I don't understand why
mov bl, -3
mov al, 4
mul bl
@Stud I don't know, but I have some experience with finding books.
13:59
Stores 244 in al
Didn't you aim for 246?
I think I'll leave the fix in just in case
@Mast In my example I did because there was already "-2" = 254 stored in the target cell, I left that one out here
It's kind of dangerous though to use Assembly and not understand exactly why something works
2
@Mast 4 * -3 is 244, that's fine.. he was aiming for 246, because 2 + (4 * -3)
As far as I know MUL works if both operands are interpreted as unsigned or both as signed numbers and not when one is unsigned and the other is signed
I just realized we forgot to celebrate we graduated a year ago!
14:06
And I'm pretty sure that the Assember rewrites mov bl, -3 to moving the 2s complement of -3 into bl
@Vogel612 Of-course, there was a 2 extra there.
Help, my code works and I don't know why
It's an improvement over yesterday's "Help my code doesn't work and I don't know why"
Working code over broken code.
Now the only issue left is that everything breaks apart under certain cirumstances
Naruto answer; accepted non-selfie answer with 0 score: Import data module

So I was always thinking about a mask like [3, -1^, 3] applied on a cell with value say 4, then the cells to the left and right need to add 4 * -3 = -12
Turns out I forgot there's cases where the cell under the pointer is not -1
lol
No, you can't throw away the multiplication :-)
I'd want to handle this in the compiler phase and not during runtime, but not sure if that's possible
I was thinking about dividing the other cells by 1/[the value under the pointer]
But if you have non-integers as result that's a problem :D
Can't you abuse shifting?

Q: Yet another FizzBuzz in Haskell

Q: myhash - library with hash functions

NickI had a file with 2 hash functions (DJB2, NMEA0183), written in C-like way, e.g. something like this: uint8_t NMEA0183Hash(const char *s, size_t const size){ uint8_t hash = 0; for(const char *c = s; c < s + size; ++c) hash = hash ^ (uint) c; return hash; } Everything look...

possible answer invalidation by Servy on question by Profet: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/148459/revisions
@Duga Well, actually it's correcting an earlier invalidation. It probably should've been handled differently, but the end result is OK. Just roll it back to the latest not-invalidating version if he does it again.

Q: T-SQL UDF to replace replace base URLs

unnknownI have a problem where I need to replace every base part of URLs in a body of text. However, I only want to replace it in specific URLs. Only URLs that go to "resource.aspx" that have the "source" parameter need to get the replacement. Other URLs could have the target base part and we don't wa...

Q: How do I optimize the functionality for getting phone number in the correct format?

ChakI have a method that takes a String and returns the phone number in certain format. It will return the numbers with dash ("-") in every 3 digits and at least keep 2 digits together. For example, it will return Test: '00-44 48 5555 8361' Expected: 004-448-555-583-61 Test:'0 - 22 1985--324' ...

Q: PrimitiveParser

SuperJMNThis class has the responsibility of parsing a string to one of the primitive types: int, double, float, decimal... While creating it, I have noticed that it'll be terribly ugly. It basically should perform a TryParse of each primitive type and return the first that returns true, along with t...

Q: Badger - The tumbleweed detector

Bhargav RaoI have written a small program to query the Stack Exchange API, specifically for badges. The main idea of the program is to return the new list of Tumbleweed posts on Stack Overflow, every 10 minutes. The motivation for this bot was the Weed Eater hat. The program queries the API every 10 mins....

Q: Managing Inherited Dependency Properties in WPF

It is true that you could "have code reviews focus on code that uses this annotation." But what if you are just a caller and the warning is suppressed in someone else's code; then how would you search for those (potentially unsafe) calls in your code? — Patrick Parker 22 secs ago

@skiwi IKR, I don't understand how that got so many upvotes though.

@Mast Lots of developers on SE with strong feelings on the subject.
