@Legato did you see this answer?
 string = ''
 if num % 3==0: string +='Fizz'
 if num % 5==0: string +='Buzz'
 return string if string else num
^ Might be better for your code.
00:31
You don't really += strings in C. I get what you're doing though.
Yeah, then you can drop the first %s FB part
I think I have an answer that's fairly similar in Java somewhere...
I thought about that, but it's more overall evaluations and it actually ran slightly slower on the site when I made the change. Which was interesting.
Is this the correct way to fizzbuzz in C#? ideone.com/3FtNyl I did it yesterday without looking at any implementations.
I might move the tertiary on l12 to the writeline code
Found the Java answer
@ardaozkal the case is wrong, it should be camelCase for local variables, and you might be able to use the null coalesce operator instead of the ternary

Q: CS50 pset1 - hacker1

mmoren10I'm beginning my journey into computer science and I've started with the CS50 course. The first problem set requires you to check if a number might be a valid credit card number by using Luhn’s algorithm and the first digits used by each credit card company. The code I wrote is working with ...

> The one scenario I can see where such a video game could substitute for a real war is if it convinced one side that victory was hopeless. Then they might surrender rather than fight a real war.
Maybe, but I'm guessing they A) upgrade their systems to deal with whatever caused them to lose in the simulation, and B) set up a system of booby traps and stuff to keep killing the enemy long after they lose and fight fiercely to the death.
@Legato Was there a big difference?
In fact, the very knowledge that they are losing might make them win--it is well known that soldiers with no way to retreat from a battle will fight more desperately.
@Quill I usually don't care about cases, but will be more careful. Regarding null coalesce operator, just tried and it doesn't work as the string isn't null- and I can't add to an empty string. I've hacked it shorter to this: ideone.com/XkBDp1 but I might keep the ifempty case as an additional line as this can be confusing, especially when sleepy :P
Hi, @ardaozkal, when did you join the chatroom?
I've not been around for a few weeks.
00:45
@ardaozkal toFizzBuzz += (i % 5 == 0) ? "Buzz" : ""; //adds "Buzz" if number is divisable by 3
:p
@Hosch250 I've always been around on Chat.SE but I've added 2nd Monitor the the rooms I frequent pretty recently, around a week I guess.
@N3buchadnezzar refresh

Ah, i think I figured it out
Hah!
String.IsNullOrEmpty(toFizzBuzz) or toFizzBuzz == ""?
First one is less cryptic
00:49
@ardaozkal string.IsNullOrEmpty is better
Rolf codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/60145/… has a awesome suggestion of just using a single modulo operation
I should add a LogFizzBuzz() function to RXGE :P
 `def fizzBuzz(n):
    r = n % 15
    if r in [3, 6, 9, 12]:
        result = 'Fizz'
    elif r in [5, 10]:
        result 'Buzz'
    elif r == 0:
        result 'FizzBuzz'
    else:
        result = n
    return result`
godammit
http://ideone.com/XkBDp1 -> x86 debug build -> 100 iterations -> 20.251 seconds.
http://ideone.com/XkBDp1 with `toFizzBuzz == ""` -> x86 debug build -> 100 iterations -> 20.450 seconds.
http://ideone.com/3FtNyl -> x86 debug build -> 100 iterations -> 20.307 seconds.
So yeah, string.IsNullOrEmpty -unlike what I suspected- is superior in speed too.
@Vii It's because most good C++ programmersk now that it comes at high cost. That macro cannot be put in a namespace, you can't really build other abstractions on top of a macro because the preprocessor runs first, leads to surprising errors like arguments being evaluated twice, etc. For perspective I almost certainly would not allow the macro I wrote above to pass code review in any team I was involved in, but hey, I'm just handing you the rope, you can decide whether you want to hang yourself or not ;-) — Nir Friedman 34 secs ago

@users with enough rep: Can you please update this question. It has working code, example data etc. I believe it adheres to all rules in its current state.
@StewieGriffin Define update?
You mean re-open?
@StewieGriffin its already in the re-open review queue. Be patient.
I don't think moderator flags should be used to re-open questions.
08:21
I meant reopened =) I couldn't place it in the reopen queue myself (not enough rep). That's why I asked in chat (otherwise I would just vote myself to place it in the queue). IMHO, I don't think it's necessary to wait for moderators to review the question if there are enough users with enough rep checking the reopen queue =)
But that's just my opinion, as I'm used to SO. On SO it's faster to place it in the review queue, I don't know all the etiquette on CR yet =)
@StewieGriffin Just so you know, it was auto put in the reopen queue when it was edited.

Zak
Zak
@StewieGriffin Flags should be reserved for urgent situations and/or situations which can only be handled by mod intervention.
Too bad we can't pull flags.
Flagged an answer as NAA, but the flag is still pending and the answer has been edited.
Now it's simply no longer necessary to be looked into.
@JoeWallis FTR, I thought the time limit was shorter than 5 days "Automatically in the review queue if ... Edited (body edits only) within 5 days of closure by the author"
@Zak From SO faq: "Flag the question for moderator attention. Again, explain why it should be reopened. There is more than one moderator, and moderators do reconsider their decisions."
@Zak I'm sorry, but I don't know all the etiquette here, and I'm not used to having low rep =/
Zak
Zak
08:31
@StewieGriffin Not a problem. Just try to keep mod flags as a method of last resort. It's better for the community if we can self-moderate as much as possible and the mods are free to focus on situations that really do require their attention/authority.
@StewieGriffin if you keep up answering I don't think you will be long having low rep ;-)
@200_success I flagged this one comment as obsolete because he/she now edited this into his/her answer. See chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/30476649#30476649

Using mod flags to reopen questions isn't bad practice, generally mods prefer to let the community handle things rather than swinging their hammer around

11:30
@CaptainObvious broken code.
@Malachi, IMHO, I believe your review comment is incorrect. If you read the first line of the question: "I would like to optimize a snippet of code, which use a multiple nested if statements. I am looking for formula to make it as a combination of multiple arrays logical operations. " This does not ask for "specific review on the if statement inside the for loops", as far as I can tell.
Or am I reading it wrong?
Zak
Zak
@StewieGriffin Difficult to tell. It sounds like the OP *thinks* their code works but isn't sure.
@Zak Ok, as far as I could tell from comments that are now deleted, OP's vectorization attempt didn't work, but the loop version did.
Maybe I should stop posting comments in chat for a while, I bet I'm starting to go on peoples nerves :/ "Who's this new guy asking questions about everything?"
For the record: It's not my intention to be an inpatient guy commenting on every action of other users.
11:49
You should probably ask it on: codereview.stackexchange.comAlex Weitz 18 secs ago
Zak
Zak
@StewieGriffin Eh. Attitude counts for a lot. And site business is always On-Topic in the 2nd.
@StewieGriffin IIRC, there are bugs in all code and so we only close questions if there are known bugs. Say the OP says something like "Fix my broken code", or "My code doesn't work ):" they're off-topic. But "are there any bugs?" is IIRC fine.
@JoeWallis Ok :)
Zak
Zak
@JoeWallis @StewieGriffin Yeah. The rule is not "The code works" but "The OP reasonably believes that their code works". So, for instance, if somebody posts a question, and it is later pointed out that some corner/edge case breaks it, the question is not suddenly Off-Topic. Whereas if, say, the code doesn't even compile, then it's Off-Topic whether or not the OP posted in good faith, because that's something they should've checked before they ever posted it.
@StewieGriffin technically that does make use of multiple nested if statements because of the for loops.
but I do see your point
@StewieGriffin from that post it looks like he was trying to use array manipulation or something? is that the same as vectorization in matlab?

@Malachi Yes, that's pretty much the same thing.
I don't have my headphones on yet so please be patient for a response from me, I still haven't had my second cup of coffee yet either......
@StewieGriffin that is what I figured
Vectorization is the same as doing an operation on the whole matrix in one go. I know, it's strange to call it vectorization when we're talking about matrices, but ...
And loops and vectorization are in 99% of all cases mutually exclusive.
From the Matlab documentation: "The process of revising loop-based, scalar-oriented code to use MATLAB matrix and vector operations is called vectorization."
Monking everybody
Greetings, Programs.

can't you put vectors into matrix format?
@syb0rg Npoljoh
@Malachi Yes, unrolling them
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Slovenian?
@syb0rg 2 x 2 right?

Q: Simple snake game in C

sergeyrarPlease help me improve this code. Plus, I have some bugs I have no idea how to fix (characters are sometimes echoed to the terminal, cursor at tail of snake). Still have no boundries, will add them later. Move snake using: w a s d (Initially I tried to implement this using arrow keys, but ASCII...

for acceleration vecotrs on a 2D plain?
Actually, everything, including strings, are matrices in MATLAB. A scalar is a 1x1 numeric array, a vector is a nx1 array, a string is a nx1 array of characters.

When your alphabet starts in the wrong place.
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Caesar shift?
@Malachi What do you mean?
@Malachi Yeah.
12:13
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Ah, got it
acceleration vectors are usually 2x2 matrices, aren't they?
Questions about improving working code are better asked on code review. — Quentin 46 secs ago
@CaptainObvious Off topic
The messages about acceleration vectors, are these still about Matlab, or something unrelated?
@Malachi Yes, as cyb0rg says, a matrix (of any dimension) is made into a vector using the colon operator A(:)
@StewieGriffin Are you not editing your messages?
Like that ^
12:20
Yes, but I made a mistake when I edited, and ended up posting it multiple times...
:/
Oh lol
I thought I was editing it :P
I'm thinking about asking a raise at my job
To those I ended up pinging several times... I'm sorry =P

Q: Spell and cooldown system for an Unity game

MartacusSo I have doubts about my code and if it is any good. I have a parent class Spell: using UnityEngine; using System.Collections; public class Spell : MonoBehaviour { public enum SpellType { AttackType, AreaType, BuffType, DebuffType }; public float damage; public float speed; p...

Q: User defined filters for derived object properties

t3chb0tI have created the BasicSetting class with two properties: Name & Value. The user is allowed to extend it by creating a derived class with his own properties as additional attributes for the value that together build a key for the value. To solve this I use a lot of reflection to get the propert...

12:25
@StewieGriffin sort of....
direction and velocity right?
I wonder if there are any good "articles" on SE about asking for a raise
@syb0rg, in my experience, asking for a raise is never a bad idea, unless you know your company is currently in financial trouble.
@syb0rg lol, I bet there are
@StewieGriffin No, I just feel like I'm getting way underpaid for the work I'm doing
So I make $15.50 an hour, right? (as an intern)
That equates to $31,000 a year
that is pretty good for an intern
12:27
The guys working right next to me are doing the same exact work as me, and their average salary (in my area), is $86,000
Yeah, I have the same, except I make a few dollars more than you
In my experience, say a sentence or two explaining why you think you deserve a raise and ask for one, and just wait for a reply.
you should talk to your supervisors about the possibility of being hired as a full time employee
@StewieGriffin In person or in an email?
Definitely in person...
12:28
@Malachi Can't do that quite yet, still have half of college to complete lol
I would absolutely not do it in an email.
@StewieGriffin Okay good that's what I was thinking
@syb0rg Part-Time?
But then again, I haven't done this before
It's harder to say no if you're looking someone in the face.
12:29
if you aren't working the same hours as the person next to you, then you are probably being paid pretty well
@Malachi Kinda? I always work 40 hour weeks, but am paid hourly
@syb0rg oh
if you work 40 hours and they work 40 hours.....
Yeap
then being a full time employee wouldn't really change anything in terms of time needed for school, would it?
If you send a mail your employer can take some time writing a well worded mail explaining why that's not possible due to blah blah... We'll keep it in mind next year...
12:31
@Malachi No, besides me not being here 75% of the year
@StewieGriffin Yeah, I'm half expecting a BS answer like that lol
I feel like if I told them I found a higher paying job somewhere else tho, they'd instantly try to match or raise

Q: A simple and safe implementation for strnstr (search for a substring in the first n characters of char array)

CplusPuzzleI'd like to suggest the following implementation: // Find an instance of substr in an array of characters // the array of characters does not have to be null terminated // the search is limited to the first n characters in the array. char *strnstr(char *str, const char *substr, size_t n) { c...

Q: How should I properly approach my boss if I'm feeling underpaid?

THE DOCTORI started working at my current company as a Software Engineer about 2 years ago. When I received my offer, it was $5k less than what was agreed to during my interview and non-negotiable. However I was desperate to get out from my previous job and accepted it. My base salary was 50k when I starte...

@syb0rg That's hard for interns. I'm at $18/hr, and supposedly the other large company in my town pays $33/hr, but no one here cares. "Go get a job there" is the usual response, because it is also well-known that getting an internship at the other place is harder.
@MichaelBrandonMorris do you want to intern at the other place? if I were you I would at least apply there.
@Malachi Sorry, more context needed. I'm a CS major working in IT (doing programming) at an engineering company. I'm the only CS/IT intern; everyone else is an engineer (being paid the same as me). The other engineering company in town does not hire CS/IT interns.
These two engineering companies are the two big companies in my town.
12:38
@MichaelBrandonMorris oh, I see
So I don't complain, but all the engineering interns do.
@syb0rg Do not way anything about other companies unless you are prepared to change jobs...
I only interned one place and they didn't give me much work to do, I wasn't paid for it either.
@Malachi This is my third paid internship (second year here; first year was $16/hr) and it is the best paying by far. The first was minimum wage, and the second was $12/hr. The other internship offers I had for this summer were around $12-14/hr.
@StewieGriffin As long as you don't do the same thing wrong 5x in a row in your questions :P
12:45
Were are you guys in your education? When are you doing your internships?
@MichaelBrandonMorris are you in the US? that seems like a pretty good rate for an intern.
That would appear odd at best.
my first job in the IT field paid me almost $19/hr
I'm a rising junior, in the southeastern US.
@StewieGriffin About to start junior year
About --> September
12:47
@MichaelBrandonMorris there are a lot of jobs in Johnson City for Programmers isn't there?
@Malachi I don't know actually.
@syb0rg And now I feel old...
@MichaelBrandonMorris I live in the greater Knoxville area currently, but I have had recruiters ask me if I was willing to move to Johnson City for a job, but the salary they were trying to hire me at wasn't working for me to relocate again.
@StewieGriffin I'm way ahead of the game though, I'm one of the 3 or 4 people I know of that are my age having an internship
And I know a lot of people my age
@MichaelBrandonMorris are you currently at school or back in TN?
12:50
@Malachi I'm in Kingsport, and I don't plan on staying in the area. Just did a search, and there are not many opportunities in the area.
Knoxville and Chattanooga seem like good areas for developers. or even Louisville, KY
I finished my Msc in 2013 =/ I miss my student days...
Enjoy it!
@MichaelBrandonMorris are you going to Code Stock in Knoxville?
@Malachi I'm looking at ideally ending up in Raleigh/Durham or Atlanta. I go to school in SC. And no, hadn't even heard of it.
And remember, you can get full drinking beer, but you can't get drunk eating oat meal! Spend your money wisely!

@MichaelBrandonMorris codestock.org
@MichaelBrandonMorris I fell in love with the Smoky Mountains, I don't think I will ever leave here. I may travel but I will most likely always come back.
@syb0rg A final note. I would recommend you to never ever do anything that might be uncomfortable on email (asking for a raise, requesting different working hours, asking for payed time off etc.). Man up and do it face to face.
2
@StewieGriffin I usually do ask my supervisor for time off in person, but then send him an email as a reminder so it's written proof that I can reference
If you're not able to ask your employer for a raise face to face, what will happen the day you're negotiating over a contract or something? (Even though you might be able to ask face to face, to your employer it might look like you're not)

Zak
@syb0rg The rule of negotiations: You have to have leverage.
4
You're an intern. What is your leverage?
Usually, your (only) leverage is that you'll take a higher-paying job elsewhere.
12:59
@syb0rg Yes, always leave a paper trail! It will come back and hunt you if not!
@Zak I'm doing the same amount of work as those being paid over double my rate
