ruslankI've got a barebones C++ graph class implemented as an adjacency list. The graph consists of a vector of vertices. codereview.stackexchange.com exists for when you want to write it better, but don't really have a specific question. Here people are unlikely to really sort through all your code to figure out what's happening. Generally, you might try to get rid of the for loop by vectorizing your code and using ifelse instead of if. — alistaire just now

GRRM is evil
@Hosch250 ~/ is an Asp.NET url
~/ is not a valid URL, that pertains to a virtual directory
well, it is, but likely not for you.
so <img src='~/Content/Images...> is going to literally translate to http://localhost/~/Content/Images...
ASP MVC will translate that into /Content/Images (or wherever that path is mapped to) if it's in a Razor template
But JS won't do it on it's own
Code itself looks like it should work fine
@DanPantry GRRM, that's something different than GROM I assume?

I think what I want is to see here is if I broke clean code concepts, and OO design, and if so, which ones?
08:16
@PsychoPunch You probably shouldn't. But you can learn from this post to improve your next.
Yeah, I was actually thinking about zeroing in on one particular method in there to get more specific comments.
Is that something that's acceptable here, some sort of a sub-question to a question?

Q: How to get the best value out of Code Review - Asking Questions

rolfl I have a project I am working on, and I would like some, or all of it reviewed, how can I ask for this review on Code Review in a way that produces the best possible value? This is not about a question being on-topic, or off topic. Rather, this is about making on-topic questions great qu...

@PsychoPunch You could try, but 1) it doesn't increase your views and 2) reviewers can pick anything they want anyway.
You could definitely pick a better title next time.
Titles are what influence your view count the most.
Well, that and whether or not you hit HNQ.
But will posting a related, more specific question violation of the rules here?
What's HNQ btw?
Also, that wasn't the original title I had for the question. I'm not sure if the original would have been much better, but someone edited it.
@PsychoPunch Hot Network Questions
The list you see on the right of your screen with cross-site recommended reads.
@PsychoPunch 200 did, he's quite good with titles. The original was far worse.
Yeah, which is why I kept it.
08:27
@PsychoPunch What do you have in mind with 'more specific question'?
If you're only interested in performance, that's specific and on-topic. If only interested in modularity, ditto. If that's what you got in mind, there's no problem.
Although all answers grabbing something else to pick on are still on-topic.
I wanted to see if my DFS implementation is good enough, or is it unnecessarily long.
Could it have been done better?
Or at least be written better.
@PsychoPunch Define 'good enough'.
It can always be done better.
The thing is, I had some people saying it works, but the method was too long.
I'm quite allergic to questions asking whether something is 'the right way'.
I hope you don't mind my bluntness by the way. Feel free to yell at me if you do.
@PsychoPunch Perfect, that's exactly the kind of questions we want.
Yeah, I get that absolutely.
08:33
Working code that should be written 'better'. However, don't forget to specify what 'better' means in your context.
I'm in code review room in the first place.
Too long means you should use more functions. Split them out further.
Perhaps pick a more OO approach.
Less repetition, etc.
Yeah, I understand that. But it's easy to say those things without seeing the code itself.
If I understand you correctly, you're looking for something more maintainable, easier to read, more modular. Modular code leads to shorter functions.
Have you heard about SRP and DRY?
08:35
If you take a guess, how well does your code score on both?
If you ask me personally, I'd say pretty good.
But that's my code.
Trust me, I'm one of the people who start feeling very uncomfortable once functions start getting longer than I would have liked.
So, you disagree with the feedback you got before posting the question?

@PsychoPunch That's a trap. Don't expect that.
I've seen questions answered with 3 good answers all in a different style.
There's no one right way of writing an answer.
Well, I'm not saying I do them so much better than other people.
It's just that, when pointing mistakes in code, it would be very nice to illustrate what exactly are the issue with them.
I don't do much Java (next to nothing), so I can't help you with an answer on your question. But I can see that the answer you got is not necessarily the best answer possible. However, that happens. We can't all have the best answers on our questions or it would raise the bar even further.
Some answers go above-and-beyond.
Some don't.
The average answer is just that, average.
Yeah. So I'm just wondering if it was partly my fault not getting more answers.
And thinking about how I can improve the situation.
Yes and no.
It could've been done better, but it's too late for that now.
Also, your question has only been up for a day. For Code Review standards, that's fresh.
Give it another day.
And some questions, while written well, don't get answers.
Bounties sometimes help, but not always.
Zak
Zak
08:49
@PsychoPunch Ultimately, once your question is reasonably decent, how many answers you get is mostly down to which reviewers are around and whether they find your language/subject interesting, which is a factor you cannot control.
Yeah, pretty much roll of a die.
Got a question written February 8th that only has 37 views. It happens.
Should I have written it better, probably.
But for next time, definitely go with a better title. Put some thought in it, look what works well on the site.
@Zak I think you'd understand why I'm looking forward to reviews on this. :p
It helps a lot with getting views and getting views increases the chance on an answer.
Zak
Zak
Witty Puns in titles == 10x the views (and often HNQ)
08:53
@Mast Yeah. I understand because I myself filter questions based on their titles, and tags.
I don't go into questions I probably know nothing about.
@PsychoPunch So if you saw your old title, would you've clicked it?
Probably, but only on the basis that there's "graph" in the question, and "java" in the tag.
I think my question largely breaks this SRP on CR posts: it's asking quite a number of things.
Which makes it hard to figure out what you want out of a review.
Keep all this in mind for the next question and good luck :-)
Really, really read that meta I linked earlier.
09:00
In real life, I'm used to code reviews that last the whole day, which is something that's hard to accomplish in platforms like CR.

First, there was a poorly asked question asked in 3 languages (or at least tagged as such)
Then there were comments complaining about that, and a good answer
then there was a tag edit to only have the language that worked
then there was a comment on the good answer notifying the answerer that they might want to make a small change on their answer to make it work in the then tagged language
this the answerer could not do (for some reason? O_o), so they deleted their answer
then the asker just went ahead and added "I tried <something very close to good answer>"
(this didn't trigger duga as there were no non-deleted answers)
then other people answered the question
then someone noticed the invalidating edit, and rolled back the question to the state post-first-good-answer-that-is-now-deleted (rev 5)
then the OP woke up and didn't find this acceptable, so they replaced the question with "spam spam spam spam spam"
this triggered a low quality flag by someone,
and the person who rolled back before rolled it back again to revert vandalism

I only went with SO because I'm not really looking for a code review, I'm looking for a solution to a specific problem (getting rid of a parameter that I think could be unneeded, I just am not sure how to accomplish that). But if this doesn't get much attention, I'll post it to code review later. Thanks. — Sylverac 57 secs ago

Q: Koch snowflake in Python with numpy and pygame

AnnaI've drawn a Koch snowflake with Python 3. I'm new to the Python world and would appreciate all feedback on how to make the code more Pythonic as I'm not used to these idioms, styles and modules. All other feedback is of course also greatly appreciated. The snowflake is constantly redrawn in pre...

More info on that AWS box here
@DanPantry DDR4 RAM? That's going to be fast.
2 TB of DDR4 RAM on Haswell processors and fast SSDs..
that thing is going to be a beast
Yup.
Must be awfully expensive though.
$14 per hour, it looks like
or a minmum of $3/hour if you buy it for 3 years
which surprisignly is not that bad given how powerful the machine is
that's ~$79k over 3 years
i mean we bought a server far less powerful than that in house
for £120k
Not too bad indeed.
It's 122k a year though, if you don't apply the discount.

What about the interest?
@JoeWallis Thanks for the awesome review! Hopefully my question met the sites standards. That it cured your migraine is perhaps too much to hope for ^^
@N3buchadnezzar It's not a loan, it's rent.
