@JeroenVannevel wait, what
uh
isn't that just because it's unsafe
and thus needs a pointer deref operator? <:
yeah it's only valid in unsafe context
still, it's C#
I think
I'm not 100% sure what that is called but I think that's still C# area

@Phrancis We don't have to parse everything — we just need one offending line to trigger the warning.
Hm, maybe if we just looked for a curly brace inside <p>}</p> tags that would be simple enough?
It would cover most languages that use curly braces, which is a lot of them

Q: binary search in python 3

user2410723I have this error and i do not know how to solve it I am very sure the logic is correct I am using Python 3 in binary_search if (input_array[mid] == value): IndexError: list index out of range def binary_search(input_array, value): low = 0 high = len(input_array) - 1 while (low <= high): ...

Yes, I think that looking for } on its own line would catch 80% of the offenders.
@Duga A bit of a mess, but I think we should allow the edit.
I thought about that, but then thought about the tests for : and then...
18:18
@JoeWallis Yeah, the reason I suggested that is that it's pretty rare that someone would purposefully use a curly brace in a paragraph, as opposed to say, : and then

I'm afraid this question does not match what this site is about. Code Review is about improving existing, working code. @200_success On closer inspection, it still does not compile.
@Phrancis I know, it's just a shame that :, and possibly then, are fairly common

Q: Lua and complex numbers

TarassI try to use complex numbers in a lua program. I need to parse a table of complex numbers printing side by side the name of the complex number and its value. Can't get through it : require "complex" a = complex.new (0,1) b = complex.new (7,1) c = complex.new (1,6.4) t = {a="a", b="b", ...

This looks like Broken Code
18:21
… which is why I suggested looking for def, which is is not a common English word.
I'll just stop digging

If you have working code which merely needs improvements then you're probably in the wrong place with this post. Code Review is where they handle existing / working code and do their upmost to improve it in terms of speed, security, sustainability, and longevity. Give it a try. They're good! — Ralph 44 secs ago

Q: TicTacToe AI in Javascript

Ken MyersI'm having trouble implementing this TicTacToe AI that I found here. I'm relatively new to javascript so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong with variable scoping. choices = { 0:'#ul', 1:'#um', 2:'#ur', 3:'#ml', 4:'#mm', 5:'#mr', 6:'#ll', 7:'#lm', 8:'#lr' } function getGrid...

$ git grep --exclude '*.csproj' --pattern System.Web ./
I would have expected this to be valid syntax
18:31
@JoeWallis Do you still want to take another crack at revising the close reasons this week?
@200_success Dunno, it'd just add to the confusion, I got to the wording of the off-topic reasons, but don't think it's that solid, I'm sure you'll find a fault in no time.
> How to classify a question that asks how to modify working code to add a feature?
Makes me wonder if I'm reading things wrong again. ):
Any input is good input, don't worry about adding to confusion
I just removed all System.Web directives in a DTO project.
 86 files changed
There are 86 DTOs.
Why on earth did every DTO have using System.Web and not use it?

Q: Can someone make my code less cluttered and more efficient? (Java)

Mike ParkinThis is my code below, how can I make it more presentable and more efficient? Thank you! for (int loop = 0; loop < password.len...

@DanPantry You guys should get resharper
18:39
I AM using ReSharper
That's how I removed it all
;-;
It would be amazing to hve it in work but our computers simple are not powerful enough to use it on our work laptops
If you run VS2015, Jeroen's VSDiagnostics is a good alternative
interestingly enough, VS with ReSharper is only using 570MB of memory - it regularly reaches 800MB on my work PC w/o ReSharper.
@DanPantry sounds like copy-pasta code
18:41
@Phrancis Copy pasta? In our code? nah, that would never happen..
(go ahead and search for "copy pasted code" in the transcript with my name)
@Quill I may give it a go if it is more lightweight
@Quill will be, once it's packaged as an actual add-in and not a nuget package :)
our disk speeds are dog slow and I only have 12GB of RAM. SQL server, VS, WebStorm and Node have to share that
@Mat'sMug I know... I only have it in my projects at work ;-;

Daily reminder that copy pasted code is evil
@DanPantry 11, +5 for "copy pasta" (not counting the one you just posted)
Hmm, maybe my self restraint is better than I thought :-)
But, yes, R# is too good.
If our laptops get better I'm going to ask our boss to get it for us. the license cost is peanuts for projects like the ones we work on
@DanPantry try renaming a namespace without it (and without crying)
@Mat'sMug I know, I just moved all files from Old.Project.Namespace to New.Project.Namespace - about ~120 files. NP, did it nearly instantly
though you could use sed to do that (maybe)
I renamed RetailCoder.VBE to Rubberduck about two months into the project.. I know :)
18:45
Ah yes, I forgot RetailCoder was your old name

Oooooh, I pressed "Remove redundant code in solution". That was a mistake. Even my PC isn't good enough for that.
19:02
I was thinking of asking a CR question, but it may belong to my friend. They wrote it, and then I improved it, would that be allowed on CR? (Or is this a question for meta?)
@JoeWallis Are you an owner or maintainer of the code?
Don't really know tbh...
It's not used any more, so there's no maintainers. And I'd guess their the owner, as they made it.
ugh, no nitpicking
just allow it
If you've actively worked on it then that's fine in my eyes
@DanPantry Must have a lot of redundant code.
@JoeWallis you improved it, and they know, therefore you maintain it. the "spirit" of the rule is to avoid things like "look at this piece of crap code my coworker wrote" and "please let me know if I should fire the employee that committed this".
19:09
@Mat'sMug Oh, didn't know that's what maintain meant. I'll ask them if I can post it anyway, just wanted to get my JS reviewed again.
The main concerns are copyright, deflecting criticism by disavowing the code, not knowing how the code works, and heaping judgement on someone else.
Oh, well I don't think I'll do any of those things, I changed it the best I know. By "deflecting criticism by disavowing the code" I don't go 'well that's not my code anyway'?
I'm sure you wouldn't do that. Go ahead and post.
Thanks all, I'll wait for them to get back, to check if it's alright with them, as in my eyes their the owner.

A: Why ExpandoObject doesn't work properly with Guid converted to string?

Jeroen VannevelThe GUID parsing will end up with the same string (value) as just using a string literal. The difference however is the way it is stored in the dictionary: it's of type Dictionary<string, object>. This means that the Object class its == operator will be used which does a reference equality chec...

If the code is working as intended and the author is looking for review & improvements, this would be OK on Code Review as suggested. — Phrancis 39 secs ago
20:50
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this is just a giant code dump and a request for review, see code review.stackexchange.com for code reviews. Otherwise ask a specific question about a specific block of code and never post huge code dumps like this and ask for discussion/opinions on improvement, that is off-topic. — Jarrod Roberson 37 secs ago
If the code fully works as intended, it could work on Code Review, but be sure to read the on-topic page there first. From the description it sounds like something is not quite right with the code, but it is unclear if that's the case or not — Phrancis 56 secs ago

Does the code work? Does it do what you want it to do, but you feel there could be a better way of doing it and need feedback? It may be better suited on Code Review. If there is a problem in your code, or it's not doing what you want, then you need to identify that problem and tell us, so we know how to help.
