@DanPantry I don't really understand your question... Are you saying you need to make an insert into table D, which includes foreign keys from tables A B & C, or that you need to make an insert into table A, then carry the primary key as a foreign key to tables B C & D?
11:57
@PinCrash I need to make an insert into table A, but I also need to make an insert into table B that has a FK to the record I just inserted into table A
@DanPantry SRP alarm!
@Mast This is for data inserts in a schema I have no control over
It isn't for a SPROC
@DanPantry Lousy excuse for not writing shiny code.
You can do better.
I can't. :b and even so, this would occur in a normalised database schema too.
let's say we have a table called Event and another called Colour.
Event has a reference to Colour, because the events are in the calendar and the events must be coloured a certain way, depending on their type.
At least in the current schema, that's how it is.
And that's not up for debate (right now) unfortunately
And one event has exactly one colour - though one colour may have many events.
So a FK reference from Event -> Contact is the way to go.
@DanPantry what about SCOPE_IDENTITY()?
12:03
What I am doing now is inserting one colour and then using SCOPE_IDENTITY
but it feels really annoying when you have to insert more than one colour/event at a time.. .________.
Just put your various SCOPE_IDENTITY / @@IDENTITY keys into a temp table then use that maybe? (if you need to do multiple at once)

@Mast Yeah I like it. Looks a lot kinkier than the cannelloni I have now
@Mast In Flanders we use both equally, I'd say. Maybe ziekenwagen more, even

Q: Does Deadpool know he is breaking the 4th wall?

ayylmaoI've heard some conflicting information as to why Deadpool breaks the 4th wall, especially regarding whether it's deliberate or not. One side I've heard: Deadpool knows that he's in a Marvel comic book and that he doesn't exist in real life, so he breaks the 4th wall constantly because of this...

Q: Parsing/RPN calculator algorithm

Q: Simplifying a T-SQL pivot script

ReacesI've recently been tasked with migrating some code stacks for an applicatin that is moving from using Access to using SQL-Server. I don't usually use Pivot all that much, and most of my code is scripting intended for in-house administration of our SQL Servers. As such my code is not that great. ...

@PinCrash Putting things in to Access is a major headache - what surprises me is that people are surprised when getting it out again is also a headache.

Q: Removing folders from my rails app with rake

D_SSo I'm trying to remove the tmp/letter_opener folder. Everything works fine, just wondering if there's a better way to write it. My next step is to write some tests, to double check that I can only accept those inputs (currently failing) #my_rake_task.rake namespace :cleanup do desc 'Deletes t...

Q: Right usage of ViewModels in MVC

As @JimB said, this isn't a place for large code reviews - create and Issue for the library/package you are using. Here on SO, you need to narrow down to the section of code you have a question about, about 10 to 20 lines of code maybe and post it here in the question. Else, this topic can be closed. — eduncan911 12 secs ago
@rolfl I concur
@Vogel612 you beat me to exactly all the same things I was going to recommend :)

I'm a fast writer :)
I feel pretty certain that both of the subqueries could be rewritten as CTEs (with the outer one referencing the inner one)
So are you really just asking "should it evaluate to false?" Well, you wrote the class, so that's up to you. If you're wanting review comments for "working" code then go to codereview.stackexchange.com. — D Stanley 48 secs ago
@PinCrash I'm not even sure the innermost subquery is actually necessary
@Duga RBA, probably incoming

Q: Method to convert numbers into plain text

MaxaI'm relatively new to Java, and over the past week or so I've just been reading through the docs and messing around with it to better improve my understanding. As stated in the title, I've created a method to convert numbers (between 0 - 999,999,999) into plain text, and I would love some feedba...

I think, for this latest project, I'll try to split it into discrete elements for review, as opposed to posting the whole thing.
14:30
Many things but start with not using expr (which requires a sub-shell and is non-standard and largely obsolete) and just use shell arithmetic $(( num % 10 )). Also you can avoid using [/test` if you are checking == 0 and just use if ! (( num % 10 )); then (also shell arithmetic) since as the man page says "if the value of the expression is non-zero, the return status is 0; otherwise the return status is 1". That said I think this question is more appropriate for Code Review than here as the code works. — Etan Reisner 24 secs ago
@Vogel612 I think you're right, I'll post something about that
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it seems more appropriate for codereview.stackexchange.com than here as the code works. — Etan Reisner 38 secs ago

TIL making an async process that uses centralized state is hard to turn into a multi-threaded process, and impossible to debug.
in VBA Rubberducking, 8 hours ago, by Mat's Mug
the test fails, but the inspection actually works in the VBE. something is broken with the combination of threading, parser state and resolver. my brain hurts.

lol yeah
I use it even though I'm not really qualified. And I recently found out that I mess it up now and then.
so, I'll make an issue on my GitHub repo, and happily take a PR from a grownup with a strong stomach, a healthy heart, and more bravery than is really good for me :)

@Donald.McLean Did this ever become something?
hrmph... JavaFX dialogs are unnecessarily difficult
@Vogel612 So drop it and use jQuery instead.
because you can create custom button types and Dialogs generally seem to be a PITA
@Mast those are even worse
I like where this is going though:
public void fileChoosing() {
    if (model.isNotSaved()) {
        view.showPrompt("Unsaved Changes",
          "You have unsaved changes. Do you wish to save them before changing the resx-fileset?",
          this::onSaveRequest,
          () -> {});
    }
    resxChooser.show();
}
At the end of the day it doesn't matter what language or framework you use: it could always be better.
() -> {}, I'm still not used to magic like that.
Guess I don't practice enough.
@Mast it's a proper //do nothing
14:57
smells, no?
why?
because why code that does nothing even needs to be written?
I'm not really intending to overload an interface because doing nothing in one call smells
fair point :)
Heard from a VIP in Marketing in a company-wide conference call just now: "SEO optimization"
14:59
No hits on searchcode. On the other hand, snippets like that are notoriously hard on search engines.
I could... actually... but then I'd introduce a default method that's completely unnecessary
@Mast this isn't on github yet.
mostly because I need to unit-test it properly...
@PinCrash Not realizing what SEO actually means. Marketing people are famous for stunts like that.
