@MichaelSorens This is a work around to provide a way for the reviewer to so see the changes made by Person 1 after the review comments. If Person 1 needs to make significant changes from the original review it might be better to close the original and open a new review. I am just trying to help work around a shortcoming of the TFS code review tool. This is not a one size fits all solution but it does work well in many cases. — Chad Dienhart 45 secs ago

Q: A property that can represent both a fixed date and a day range: How to properly model that?

julealgonI work in a system that can represent a "shipping estimate" in two ways: A specific date: The item is guaranteed to ship at that date A day interval: The item will be shipped "X to Y" days from today The information on the model is semantically the same, it is "the shipping estimate". I appreciate your comment, Chad, and I fully understand that it is a workaround. I use TFS code review every day in my work, but this is a tremendous sore spot. (Not your suggestion, but the fact that TFS does not support revisions of a code review!) I am glad this workaround is useful in many cases for you but in my environment sadly it just is not useful at all. — Michael Sorens 11 secs ago

Hi, I wrote a small program in a language where I'm not very knowledgeable. And I'd be curious as to how to improve it from language standards and techniques. Obsoletes libraries, etc. Is this ok to ask on CR?
Even it the program is probably trivial for you guys?
@bilbo_pingouin If your code is working it can be posted on CR, but we can review any and all aspects of the code posted. Basically, you can ask about pretty much anything, but the reviewer does not have to address that point. Be wary to not sound like you are asking for library recommendations, which is potentially off-topic
The on topic guide may be helpful to you
The code is working. At least in the sense that it does what I want... :-) Thanks.
So simply dumping the code, briefly describing what it does and asking "How can I improve it" would be alright, then?
An ideal question usually has a title that describes what the code does, a code dump, and then some context on what it does at the bottom and what you would like the review to achieve
Punny titles always go down well too :p
Here is an example of one of the more popular questions in the past month
(Though the title is pretty crap because it asks what the aim of the review is rather than what the code is)
It is important to know what the code does because that provides some much needed context in order for the reviewer to make decisions.
thanks, I'll give it a try :)

@DanPantry ^ Webpack is so cool
11:40
@Quill yep :)
you can use commonjs and es6 modules as well
I would recommend using the ES6 form
commonjs looks cool
That's the one that Node uses
and Babel will transpile ES6 modules into something that is interoperable with commonjs, so you can stll use the npm ecosystem transparently.
TypeScript won't do that (which is why webpack with typescript gives you four different ways of loading a module.. define('', []), require('...'), import foo = require('foo') and import foo from 'foo', all of which do different things..
The code is not broken. It works as intended except for the fact that there is no way to tell if the SMS was sent and I need to figure out how to implement that. — Vlatko Å urlan 1 min ago
Unfortunately, helping you implement unwritten code is off-topic. — Quill 19 secs ago
the importing style we use at work for typescript is nasty
we haev to juggle between es6 modules for our code and between es6, commonjs and typescript require depending on whether or not the 3rd party library has typings or is not a js file (webpack-loaded css/html for example)
so you might see this:
import ng = require('angular')
import myComponent from './components/myComponent'
const classNames = require<any>('./index.css')
One of the main problems with JS is there are so many different ways to screw it up and every company uses his own mixture.

whereas with babel it all looks the same... :(
@Mast that's why you use a linter - like eslint - with a non-crap transpiler - like babel
babel + eslint will make for some very standardised code
static $inject = ['$injector', '$rootScope', '$scope', '$state', '$stateParams', 'authService'];
constructor(
    public $injector: any,
    public $rootScope: Interfaces.IRootScope,
    public $scope: Interfaces.IUserScope,
    public $state: ng.ui.IStateService,
    public $stateParams: ng.ui.IStateParamsService,
    public authService: App.Services.AuthService) {
    super($injector, $rootScope);
as long as you obey a style guide, you'll be fine - same with C or C++ :P
@Quill use ngAnnotate with webpack.
I'll try that combination next time I dare using it.
also, ng.ui is deprecated. The correct namespace is angular.ui
and you can get typings for angular.
angular.auto.IInjectorService, angular.IRootScopeService...
11:48
JavaScript still confuses the hell out of me
look at the typings package on npm and DefinitelyTyped/DefinitelyTyped on Github
// @ngInject
constructor(public $injector: angular.auto.IInjectorService, public $rootScope: angular.IRootScopeService, ....) {}
or better yet just say screw it and just use es6 with destructuring. :D
// @ngInject
constructor($injector, $rootScope) {
  // I am lazy
  Object.assign(this, arguments)
}
(Don't do that)
lol
I wish browsers would create some kind of "plug-in system" for frontside scripting, and that you could use any suitable language you wanted and that browsers would automatically download the runtime
I don't even understand what typings are :D
In the latest news, people are discussing var for java...
11:51
@Quill They are .d.ts files that describe the interface of a module/library. That way TypeScript can know about 3rd party libraries and their types instead of assuming everything is the any type.
@Vogel612 Created 8 March... so that's why I haven't seen that
Unfortunately, it is overzealous because if you do not have the typings for a module it will just pretend that the module doesn't exist instead of falling back to any with a console warning.
oh, those.
@Vogel612 That is very latest.. the verbosity of Java is one of the few reasons why I don't like it so much (that and xml config files / gradle confusing me)
yeah, we have interfaces for each ts file
11:53
@DanPantry xml-config is ... unnerving
xml is unnerving
and gradle isn't java, but groovy-ish
Kind of fishy to me that it uses var list = new ArrayList<String>(), and not var list = new ArrayList<>() (to which you later add String objects), but isn't that the whole issue of using var over List<String>?
@skiwi well you can't infer RTL and LTR at once
so you can either opt in to the diamond operator or to type-inference
@Vogel612 Exactly, and Java is heavily RTL based I think?
Or maybe not... but still
11:54
as of now it's LTR
but only for type-inference
I can see it working with enhanced-for loop definitely though
for (var i : items) {
    // ...
}

@DanPantry It's valid JS
@DanPantry if ( white || gold && black || blue) {...}
D:
12:54
it evaluates the other conditions even if the previous ones were true
@Quill ||| isn't..
it's literally pointless
If you try and use ||| node will ask you for a continuation
Try it in the node repl :p
I thought it was a thing, but MDN returns nothing
maybe I'm thinking of another language
oh
It's just a single |
lol
that's because that is a bitwise OR
it doesn't evaluate "if other things return true" - it's a mathematical operation :p
false | true = 0 | 1 = 1
12:59
|| | could work I think.
I don't know if I can groan any harder than I am right now
a || b | c would work.
Yea, but what if you drop the b and just leave space?
no, that won't work. javascript isn't whitespace significant (except for ASI)
Won't it interpret that as something crazy, like we're used from JS?
13:00
it would consider it as an unfinished statement and would ask you for a continuation
for the same reason that if() and if () aren't different
javascript is only as crazy as you make it out to be :p

The program takes an input from the user and returns the Morse code version of their input. Program.cs using System; using Sy...

hei there mates ^^
@Mat'sMug The Zombies Return!
Hello @Cajuu'
@Malachi
any idea why bpaste.net/show/b7837cbd8329 it's not entering case 3 ?
:(
what am I missing ?
where do you increment n? (I don't speak C)
nvm, scanf
what scanf ? :3
the one at line 147..?
14:01
from the modify function ?
if that's the problem how comes that the other options work ? ^^
> (I don't speak C)
well, thats not the problem :p
If you have tried to deduce the problem why not try asking on SO? You will get a better answer there, especially if you list what you have tried.
This shall be my new norm: if no answer on codereview, write unit test. — Marcus 7 mins ago
just want to double x 100 - check before posting _

No, your norm should be first unit tests then code review — Heslacher 6 mins ago

How are the benchmarks done?
manually
x_X
I could post it for review, but its basically hacked together and maybe not quite my standard ;-)
If you are interested I will post it.
It's already posted
but I've made some improvements to the code as suggested and case 3 it's not working anymore

Q: Simple customer program in C (using binary files)

Cajuu'I have just finished a simple C program which is basicaly composed of 3 functions: accadd(void){} which adds some customer details to a binary file void view(char file[30]){} which is supposed to let me view some of the data in a .txt file void modify(char file[30]){} which verifies if a value...

Benchmarks that aren't done through proper benchmarking software are not reliable though
The difference (factor 2) is not high enough for me to justify the benchmark result
Can't say much without seeing the actual benchmarking method of course but as a rule, I tend to discard anything that isn't done through proper software
what would you recommend ?
@JeroenVannevel you are talking to me, don't you ?
Generally I talk to anyone who is silly enough to listen to my ramblings
But in this case yes
@Cajuu' oh, I didn't notice you were also talking about benchmarks. Obviously that link isn't relevant to you then -- it's C#
:))) I saw
Code reuse would be helpful for some of your larger blocks of code. Nonetheless, this post is more appropriate for codereview — GWW 8 secs ago

@Malachi actually it's @PinCrash's BrainDuck. but yeah the zombie one is a good 2nd :)
monking!
My mom sent me an article today
Do you think she's trying to say something?
@Mat'sMug I only made the ad image, all credits for Brainduck should go to @SimonForsberg ;)
@JeroenVannevel if you don't think so, you're fooling yourself
@Quill shut up mom
sounds like some hippy drivel to me
@Mat'sMug the "Clicks per day" metric is skewed since it's based on when the post that has the ad was created... is there a way to get the SE gods to reset that timer for all ads to when the ads actually went live, i.e., yesterday?

Q: How to declutter my code and make it less complicated?

Nubaira KabirSo my code is too complicated and there are way too many errors. It works just fine with the long steps, but I need to make it simpler, and I can't figure out how to do a while loop. Help ? (This is very basic code, sorry) # Crazy Numbers Lab # 3/3/16 #Create a program that will process positive...

IDK.. it's not going to really matter after a couple of months though.. and what's missing is the number of times an ad was served :-/
14:35
That would be a good methinks
@Quill What's wrong with Nature?
nothing :p

Q: Clicks per day is skewed

Mat's MugWith the delay that happened with activating the community-ads on meta sites, something unfortunate happened: the clicks per day metric on the stats page is completely skewed, since it's apparently counting clicks since the ad's creation date (around Jan.15), yet the ads actually only went live v...

There is one thing I do like about TFS, the way you can Link several tickets and other things together
14:41
@PinCrash That's not TFS - That's VSO
TFS is the source control. VSO is the issue tracker
VSO is actually quite good
I like VSO then, besides wonky GUI
@Mat'sMug I would NOT have guessed that until I saw it.

Q: Could we see the number of times an ad was actually served?

Mat's MugEach community-ads post links to a stats page, where we get to see a number of "metrics" including: Score / number of net votes on the ad post Creation date Clicks per day (which is skewed) All but the clicks per day are already publicly visible on the ad posting itself. Would it be possibl...

@PinCrash there you go
@Mat'sMug zombie has 2.5 clicks per day
I thought that maybe it was counting votes on the meta page itself though...
clicks on the meta page itself do count

oh I see, there is a separate notation for clicks and votes
@SimonForsberg I just opened that up as well
@Mat'sMug Merci :)

@JeroenVannevel how do I add parameters to a SQLCommand using object notation?
I HIT. I MISS. OOOH I SWING THE BAT OVER TO @Mat'sMug

I've got little experience with low-level sql stuff in C# -- always using ORMs. Mat probably knows though
what's object notation?

What's a SQLCommand? That's not the same as SQLCMD is it?
