Q: Implementing a Time class in c++

In78 Design a class TIME which stores hour, minute and second. The class should have the methods to support the following: User may give the time value in 24-hour format. User may give the time value in AM/PM format Display the time in 24-hour format. Display the time in AM/PM ...

@Quill you should, it's great.
Today I learned you can numbers to an exponent in JavaScript literal
You can use JavaScript to do anything
3
1e3 is 1x10^3
or 1000
12:38
did you not know that?
also that's just called scientific notation
or the shorthand version of scientific notation at least
I know what it's called
Just didn't realise that you could use it in JS
I knew about it more for a while, but I was doing a string math only eval implementation a while ago and had to expand my knowledge on it
I can't even remember why or where I was doing that code
Hacking the universe ^^
hey @skiwi, how familiar are you with trampolining (the cs/programming concept)?
the concept of generators and trampolining leaves me very confused
@Quill Not very, I hard about it a week ago, but don't quite understand it
12:46
>>> def simple_generator_function():
>>>    yield 1
>>>    yield 2
>>>    yield 3
>>> for value in simple_generator_function():
>>>     print(value)
1
2
3
>>> our_generator = simple_generator_function()
>>> next(our_generator)
1
>>> next(our_generator)
2
>>> next(our_generator)
3
Generators shouldn't be that difficult though
Hmm, not sure why I thought Generators was linked to Trampolining
what the fk is trampolining?
> Trampolines (sometimes referred to as indirect jump vectors) are memory locations holding addresses pointing to interrupt service routines, I/O routines, etc. Execution jumps into the trampoline and then immediately jumps out, or bounces, hence the term trampoline.
What's the use of that?
12:48
Afaik trampoling is a bad thing if you're going for performance
Hmm, Wikipedia makes them seem like shortcut code to End calls
> Trampoline can be used to overcome the limitations imposed by a CPU architecture that expects to always find vectors in fixed locations.
I was hoping for a more real-life example
So you can use them to "overclock your low level code"?
That doesn't seem to make much sense ^^
> overclock your low level code
> example in Python
pick one
12:52
@DanPantry Hey, Python is fast.
that example was a generator, not a trampoline
also I don't even know what I'm talking about, the block quotes are wikipedia
@Mast Yeah but the GIL makes Python more of a Fish
@Quill oh, my mistake, then
I was asking the budding CS master Skiwi for some deep C perls of wisDOM
@DanPantry Just don't multithread, problem solved.
12:54
@Mast (works for Javascript)
Python has other fun things to do instead which work just as well.
yeah, this makes it seem like trampolines are skipping logic to avoid unnecessary elements
I'm not even a CS Bachelor yet, let alone master :P
@DanPantry JavaScript never works. Yes, it always does something, but that doesn't mean that something is what you 100% intend it to do.
I don't know about you.. but it works for me
12:55
@Mast const rand = () => 42
10% of the time it works 100% of the time
@DanPantry That's awful.
PPCG is an interesting place to learn about abusing language features
their ES6 post has some cool info
On the other hand does anyone have knowledge in reading functional notation?
12:56
@Duga Another free flag.
((a … → b) … → [a] → *) → (a …, Int, [a] → b) … → [a] → *)
how on earth do I read this?
@DanPantry Left to right, don't forget the brackets and parentheses.
12:58
probably best to ask over at the Math.SE chatroom
I'm not sure if this is maths or not
It's documentation for a library
everything ends up maths
And I googled about functional notation - nothing like this came up.
Seems more like a Haskell.SE question (if only that existed)
@DanPantry Yup, learn Haskell.
That usually looks like the sorcery you mentioned.

Q: Handle API Timeouts in Node Sails.js

edencorbinI am working on a node.js sails.js app that handles a number of API calls and uses Bluebird for promises. I have refined my domain in accordance to your advice, helped a lot, but I have one more question that came up on code review by a colegue. Should the creation ( same as in your example) of bikes be done in app(service) layer or should that responsibility lay in a domain service. To me it seemd overdoing it to construct domain service that handles bike creation and call it by a interface in the app layer. Argument was that domain entities should be constructed in domain and not in app(service) layer. — user2153675 51 secs ago

@daveaspinall Stack Overflow users are far from the best authority on what is on-topic on Code Review. They're not even that great at what is on-topic on Stack Overflow. The difference between Stack Overflow & Code Review is that here we generally only tell you whether or not your question is on topic here. We don't try to pretend we know what is on or off topic on other Stack Exchange sites. @skiwi Errors, warnings, and every user action. We don't have that many users.
@Donald.McLean I'm also logging errors and warnings obviously, most interested in user actions
There was one time where I discovered that there was logging turned on (by accident) that logged every user password. Turned that RIGHT off.
My biggest fear is that log files will get spammed
@skiwi User actions are all ajax calls that get handled by a remote procedure call. So at the top of every one of the callable procedures, I have a thing that logs all of the user supplied data, along with the login ID.
15:25
The downside now is that it is hard to get a clue of what the code is actually doing
@skiwi meh. Log files are cheap. Log analysis is difficult
4
This is an application covered by draconian NASA "official use only" policies. Spam is not one of my problems.
If you have a proper logging format you can parse and analyze logfiles pretty nicely
@skiwi For that, I run the app in full debug log mode on my personal development machine. Huge log files, great visibility. Sometimes it's hard to find stuff with all the threading, but I seem to manage.
Prefer a central log over many different ones. If you have to search for a specific error in 3 different logfiles which even combined aren't guaranteed to have all errors and warnings logged you're doing something wrong
15:29
Hmm alright..
@Vogel612 Totally agree. One log file.
My biggest gripe right now is that I am pretty sure that some behavior is occurring, but I can't prove it (for myself)
I could add logging to all my service methods
I need to figure out why planets and moons "randomly" get deleted in my universe
That probably sounds scary to @Donald.McLean ^^
We have a database server dedicated to logging
That has the problem of availability though. Not that it's fundamentally different for simple files
@skiwi Seriously. That would be scary to anyone who lives on a planet or moon, not just me. :-)

> This question is already closed
You're much too fast
@quartata slowpoke :)
In my defense I do have to press an extra button: "should be closed flag"
@Mat'sMug Isn't the usual policy to not modify the meaning of the question?
Aren't we supposed to have the OP remove the bad request, like fixing broken code?

code is different. I'd rather not have a question closed and downvoted to oblivion and OP question-banned just because the wording is a little off while the code is perfectly reviewable
@Hosch250 I especially hated unicorns around 7:30PM EST last night ;o
@CaptainObvious so stupid you have to ask for the java version every time
I have decided to fill out the wiki. Feel free to try to make it better.

> Thankfully, Dogescript fixes that, so that your code can truly go to the moon.
@Mast Dogescript is the only way I can tolerate JS
It injects just enough humor into an otherwise terrible and painful coding experience
@Mast Yep, it was one tag that wasn't already on SO.
Blame @Quill

Q: Little script that analyzes frequency and content of political fundraising E-mails

n1c9Since I'm a big politics nerd, I wanted to write a little script that would analyze the frequency and content of political fundraising emails. @CaptainObvious That repetition.

@DanLyons Epic Rap Drive Battles of History
they're named after Spaceballs characters, so it's LoneStar vs. Barf ;o
@DanLyons haha
Who's winning?
I've seen some odd naming schemes, but I've never encountered a Spaceballs scheme yet.
@Mast I usually use stars.
That's not that weird though I suppose
Spaceball theme definitely is impressive

Greek mythology and Disney characters are among the most popular schemes I think.
I just call mine DebianJessie and Fedora21. I'm so boring. :-P
@Mast I know a friend who uses famous photographers
one client of ours names their servers after units of time - production has one called eternity, and non-prod servers are things like minute and second
I've yet to encounter Disney characters.
Most of the people I know do astronomical objects.
