RELOAD! There are 1631 unanswered questions (94.5758% answered)
@Phrancis Want to hear a story about staticness?
@Hosch250 Certainly!
584
A: Java: when to use static methods

not-just-yetiOne rule-of-thumb: ask yourself "does it make sense to call this method, even if no Obj has been constructed yet?" If so, it should definitely be static. So in a class Car you might have a method double convertMpgToKpl(double mpg) which would be static, because one might want to know what 35mpg...

Back when I was studying C++, I tried to fix a bug by going static.
Then I started having strange, random behavior in my code.
Turns out, calling the method twice from a couple different classes was somehow causing a value in the method to contain the incorrect value.
I don't remember the exact details, but it couldn't be static.
I'm experiencing something sort of similar, and I only have one class... so yeah, this thing really needs to not be static
I can't get it to have a predictable state, and surely that's because it's not an actual instance
00:04
Sounds like a reentrant problem rather than a static problem.
You'll probably need to refactor out a class and create an instance.
Pity my new (sort-of almost finished) RD feature couldn't help you.
Right
Anyone think this looks stubbish? codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/115508/…
//sample long running method
private void LongRunningMethod()
{
    lock (_locker)
    {
        Thread.Sleep(5000);
    }
}
private void StartListening(object dummy)
That snippet does, but in the context of the full question, it looks OK, @Hosch250
OK.
Someone should mention that t should be renamed.
00:08
@Hosch250 Not renamed, it should be removed.
@Phrancis - in general, functions should be static, methods should not be.

Q: Simple string compression reloaded

ChrisWueInspired by this question I thought I provide my implementation. I tried to go with the spirit of the *nic tool chain - read from stdin and write to stdout. This has the added benefit of making buffering very easy (current and previous characters and the count). All kinds of reviews welcome (bes...

functions are things which compute an output from an input. Methods are things which change some state, or rely on some state.
@rolfl You can make functions with Java?
Of course.
Or are they more like "functions"?
Well that's new information to me!
00:12
it's the same thing as a method in java
java terminology doesn't distinguish between them
CS terminology does
But you can't have a method/"function" without a class... right?
@JeroenVannevel is partly right, but Java (now) has first-class functions too.
@WinterBashTime Hi there
@Phrancis - consider this, which I call a function: Double.min(....)
A function which takes two doubles, and returns the minimum. It is a function because it has no side effects, and all state is supplied to it.
00:15
Sounds like a function to me as well
It is also rightfully, a static
Java also now has "real" functions because it supports lambda expressions, etc.

@rolfl I thought everything was called methods in Java
@rolfl Technically you can change external state in Lambda functions though.
@SimonForsbergMcFeely the block of code in a class with a name, is called a method, but it does the job of a function
@SimonForsbergMcFeely In which case the lambda is a method ;-)
I am differentiating between the Java naming system for code blocks, and the concept of functions.
A function is a code block that tkaes inputs, has outputs, and has no state-changing side-effects.
It can be implemented as a Java method.

You are most welcome to stay, but I guess at 03:47 (which is also my local time), one really ought to go to bed, and no stay up any more!

I've never seen a worse one...

Space between member names and brackets would be the first thing I add
Should I make the dropdown a bubble thing? I don't like WinForms bubbles.
@Kimmax I don't put spaces in between my member names and parenthesis.
I'm not sure what the VBA standard is (or maybe they don't have one).
It's not too bad, although it is not entirely clear what this dialog actually does, so I would most likely add some description to it
@holroy Yeah, I'm bad at documentation, even if I am good at writing...
The New Years fireworks are beginning to go off.
02:57
I reckon you are extracting something into a class, so maybe I would add some information on the original stuff you are extracting from in addition to what you are extracting into.
Or maybe someone is shooting a very heavy rifle.
@holroy I'm extracting into a currently non-existent file.
I should hope anyone trying to use this feature knows the class they are extracting from.
I'm not sure what information you mean there.
In that list you can see fields, properties, procedures, and functions.
At least, the definition.
I'm on thin ice here, but say you are extracting from the Car class into an Audi class, it would be nice to see the original Car class/name to help you remember what you are doing.
You can see the active name in a pane on the side.
Similar applies if you are splitting from one class into two classes, it could help to have a little context around everything.
It is highlighted blue.
I'm still not really sure what you mean. I wouldn't try splitting a class unless I knew what everything was going on.
03:02
Have you seen the similar approach from JetBrains Refactor tool?
@holroy Yeah.
That is what this is based on, but I've never really tried to use it for something real.
@Hosch250 It has references to both the source class and the one extracting to. And this is useful information, as when you have loads of windows open, it is good to know where you were when you hit the extract class action. One extension or improvement could possibly be to have two panes so that you could see where variables and methods are to be after the extraction.
And add some headers to the list view
Hmm, R# says what is used by what.
That would be pretty tricky to do in WinForms.
Right now I'm just going to leave it simple. Maybe I'll come back after the spring semester.
I could say which class is being extracted from, how about it, @Mat'sMug?
03:11
I think it would help for an extraction tool, at least. :-)
I don't know, the active class is highlighted in the project explorer.
True, this pane can be closed, but that is probably rarely done.
And I can't just steal their UI.
I call it a day/night/morning. Will be back tomorrow I think.. Dang it you where right.

like highlight Boolean a different colour to bb
Oh. Umm, that would be incredibly difficult.
Maybe for RD 3.0.
I figured that might be the case
04:46
I'm not sure if I could highlight just part of a word in WinForms, and the dialogs are not going to XAML before 2.1.
If I could, which is not impossible, the most difficult part would be determining which part of the word to highlight.
I could just highlight the entire AsType clause.
That wouldn't be too difficult, I guess, but it would take critical time from the development of the core, releasable system.
I want to get this done before this semester. Enhancements can come later.
Of course

Eventually, I got around to posting code on this site, and starting posting a lot.
04:52
perhaps I thought I'd be missing crucial information simply learning as a I write
I learned a lot.
I have never read a book on C#. I went though about 16 chapters of Bjarne Stroustrup's C++ book for beginner-level programmers (but not limited to beginners. I'd learn a lot if I finished it.)
I did a few-ish (maybe 10?) chapters in my Java book, don't remember offhand, as part of college. Didn't learn much there.
Everything else, I've learned here and by reading blog posts sporadically.
I have Big Nerd Ranch's Objective-C Programming book
@Quill-HATMANIAC I don't hold much with company's books. Go for the pro's.
04:55
right, okay
Most of the company books I've seen aren't all that great, but it will contain some good information.
I know SO has some 'book suggestion' threads for each language
It was somewhat outdated by the time I got it too, so that helped
I'd love to get my hands on Jon Skeet's books, and Eric Lippert's, and Robert Martin's, and that guy who wrote a book on multithreading.
That is kind of out of the question until I finish my set of Knuth, though.
Compiler Design is on my list of things to learn
I need to read that series, I read some of the first, but the eBooks were hard (because I don't like eBooks)
@Quill-HATMANIAC Study Roslyn. It has some not-the-best choices, and many brilliant ones.
04:57
Roslyn is open-source too, isn't it?
@Quill-HATMANIAC I prefer real books any day too. I always get the real textbooks.
Yeah, look it up on GitHub.
I think I starred it at some point
Mostly, just write it for a real project and post it here.
If you need, post follow-ups, and continue advancing.
If you need a real project to work on, you can work on Roslyn, Rubberduck, VSDiagnostics, or even my Resx Translator.
The build for that is broken, ATM, I need to build a tree for each key, with the children as a node for each language. That node will contain the value/comment for the resx file.
I also need to write tests, but that shouldn't be hard. Maybe during the school year.

I saw your Go answer (or one of them at least), it was good.
Perhaps, but I confess that I answered a few questions in the past few weeks, but have not really "felt it".
Looking forward to seeing some Go questions (hopefully) soonn
I am going to see if I can open-source some code I wrote for work.
There's always that really good question that comes along though, and missing them for a while kinda puts most people in a slump
I want to do that with a library I wrote for work, the first version is already on CR, but GitHub would be nice
Did you get much time off work to spend with your family for Christmas?
This question has a broken element to it, it's not a major part, a replaceAll helper that's called a few times

Q: Correctness of a CSV writer in Node.js

FabianCookA friend of mine wanted an array-to-CSV string function for Node.js, so I came up with this. Basically, it can take in a single object, a 2D array or an array of objects. If the children or parent is an object then the object properties become the headers, if the children are arrays then the fi...

Can I ask for an opinion on whether that's alright

Did you get much time off work to spend with your family for Christmas?
^^^ I initially took 2 weeks off.... but then got sick, so I cancelled my second week off ;-)
Worked from home instead.
16:13
well that's cool, I think. family time is nice, as long as your kids don't get sick with you
@Quill-HATMANIAC The question is from 2013 - rules were a little different then. The recent edit flurry should be given some credit.

Q: factor two similar libraries

hoosierEEI have two similar libraries for use in an embedded system (Teensy, sort of like Arduino). One is for debouncing a digital pin, the other is for reading a capacitive pin as if it is a debounced digital pin. They have similar APIs: constructor (with pin number as parameter) void update() hides...

@Quill-HATMANIAC haha monking!
how goes the new year? back at work yet?
Well it's Sunday..
Back Tuesday :-)
Right, almost forgot timezones
Twins got TMNT figurines, one got Raphael, the other got Donatello. They've been fighting over Raphael for two days now
No Leonardo? I thought all the kids loved him
I guess pizza gags and sibling fighting is the new cool
16:44
I'm seriously considering making it to the store to get a Leo... and heck, a Mike while we're at it
when I went to the one of the local themeparks for the work christmas party, I saw a liveaction TMNT show
like with a fully decked out car and everything
all the kids in the audience were glued
You too, I presume ;-)
I laughed pretty hard at how ridiculous it was, but I felt really sorry for them. Google tells me it was 78.8degrees F outside that day

Q: Bode plot of various filters implemented in javascript

WG-The following code is my attempt to create an interactive bodeplot. I used javascript using d3js, jquery mobile and math.js. The bode plot shows a lead lag filter in continuous time and several discrete time equivalents using a certain discretization technique. I would like to have some comments...

When I was a kid the only clue we had to tell the turtles apart was the color of their bandana and knee+elbow pads
they didn't have names or voices?
Now Donnie is sick-green green

Lately one of my major review points has been "get rid of jquery"... I think I'm becoming biased
This question needs another answer, one not written by the author of the answer in question. — Mast 3 hours ago
On meta.
got hivemind upvoted for the 'code review is graduating' nonsensical content
Ah, yes, I remember that day.
It was rather funny to see the general steam community react with "oh noes steam got haxxed".

The ARG that's going on at the moment is pretty funny too, I already got the free badge from it
I was in the chat for a while, helping out with some python and node scripts, but I got bored
Put the common code in a function? I'm not clear on what the issue is. Also, codereview is a better place for this than SO. — Dave Newton 51 secs ago

@Quill-HATMANIAC Same here, no clue what it is though.

Code review questions are better asked on the Code Review Stack Exchange. Initial thoughts: unnecessary parens around the strings you're comparing to. Nesting is much too deep. — Dave Newton 51 secs ago

Q: F# code to check whether there are three same digits within a given number

stt106I came across this problem by accident and gave it a go. I think my solution works as it has passed all the unit tests I wrote. Given I just started learning F# a couple of weeks I would love to have some feedback on the code regarding both its accuracy and its quality. To be clear about the pr...

Q: Filtering variadic template arguments - most elegant solution?

reallocI wrote some code to implement a way to filter the arguments of a variadic template based on their type. My current solution requires many helper meta-functions and I'm sure that there must be a better way. How would you improve this? #include <type_traits> #include <tuple> //Type for storing ...

@CaptainObvious
@skiwi - There are times when you look at code and say: "Holy Crap, the person who programmed that is brilliant!" .... then, there are also times you look at code and say: "Holy Crap! What sort of language or problem requires people to do such gymnastics to solve problems - either they aare doing somethin wrong, or the language is broken!"
Sometimes, but rarely, the same code evokes both responses.....
What does it trigger in this case? ^^
The latter ..... either their solution to the problem is not using the right techniques, or the language is broken.
@Quill-HATMANIAC That's disturbing..... context?
@Quill-HATMANIAC Looks like the three musketeers are going to end the bash tied for first, eh?
sorry?
oh yeah
there's a third
@Quill-HATMANIAC Have you reported that site?
not my find to report, already referred the finder to the relevant meta
pretty pointless posting it here anyway
sorry about that
18:52
yeah, whoever did it screwed up redirects
usually it's ROOT/whatever, but they forgot to change that
The footer links point to SE
That may surprise @Pops ^^^^
For some values of "may" ;-)
