oh god okay hold on
I got pinged twice and my phone is going nuts
@skiwi No
Some elements are self-closing, but the vast majority aren't.
The only self-closing elements are elements that accept void as input, i.e, they have nothing in them. Every other element which is allowed content may not be self-closing.
So, input is self-closing. div is not.
19:14
<img /> is proper, right?
You can check the specification to be sure (or MDN), but off the top of my head the only self closing elements I can think of are img, input, most tags found inside head
Yes, because img never contains any content
Zak
Zak
@joranvar Maybe. I've found it varies a lot. Sometimes you'll get an almost-perfect copy in Word/Excel. Sometimes you'll get an unholy mess.
@HATMAN I have no idea what 9 patch PNG files are.

It is for web development, you can define portions of a sprite to the sides and corners and center

You can already do that (sort of) using CSS sprite sheets

Mad jokes
it occurs to me; there is surely an inordinate amount of proprietary code posted on CR.SE that was posted by people who didn't own rights to license (posting to SE is providing SE a CC-by-SA license to the content you post) said code. If you think for even a few moments about the legality of CR.SE's content - it has to make your head spin. You guys must have some thoughts regarding all of it? Meta discussions? Just curious
@JimmyHoffa The thing is, most of us are programmers, not lawyers. :p
We comment if it is clearly not their code.
But there's a meta post, I guess it could be used for discussion
As long as they don't say it is not their code, we assume it is.
19:37
What is the quandry there anyway? Employee at Inittech posts the code for Foo.java here, but in his employment contract he gave up all rights to any code he writes, so he doesn't have the right to grant SE a CC-by-SA license to Foo.java... so he's technically handing out an illegitimate license? Is the idea then CR.SE cannot know it's hosting illegally procured content until a DMCA take-down is made?
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa For how it works legally, no idea. But this is why we rigidly enforce "Code that you own or maintain"
@JimmyHoffa Something like that, unless they say it is from work.
If it isn't their code, we remove it, and if it is from work, we usually comment.
@Hosch250 ah so if someone says outright it's "from work" you all attempt to get it deleted ASAP?
We ask them if they have rights to post it.
Gotcha
19:39
If it isn't their code, we close the question.
I've never seen a question get deleted because it was from work

Generally speaking, people who work with proprietary code know better than to post it in the public domain.
19:40
It's just interesting; you must all know in your heart of hearts that a vast portion of the content on CR is not legitimately posted.
I mean, we don't know if they post code under a license or not. I believe that's not our problem. I'm no lawyer. But the post would be deleted if requested.
Zak
Zak
Not to say it doesn't happen, but it's not a huge issue.
@Hosch250 I didn't know that
@Zak HA HA HA :P Generally speaking, the many years I've spent in industry tells me a significant portion of coders don't think much about a great deal of relevant details in their day to day. (sturgeon's law n'atch)
@JimmyHoffa But why would we care for that? Dealing with it in obvious cases sounds good, but why would we actively seek violators?
19:41
Any of you guys Blender.se users?
We have a guy that needs a silver badge
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa IMO, most people who post on CR do it in good faith. I can't think of many examples of code on here that would constitute "Code that would actively harm a company's finances due to its presence in the public domain"
@HATMAN I sometimes use a blender.
Does it count?
Zak
Zak
Take my case. Almost all the code I post is code I've written for work (obfuscated/redacted where appropriate).
@skiwi because it's kind of an honor system thing; if YouTube didn't actively seek copyright violators, they wouldn't be able to get RIAA off it's back. Similarly so, SE has never been buggered by any such situation (probably never will be), but if you stand back and look at it from a distance, CR could be an enormous pain in SE's neck, however it's kind of flying on a wing and a prayer that no Oracle or Google or anyone decides "Hey SE, you have made significant violations of our rights..."
Zak
Zak
None of it is anywhere near a level of quality that it has any intrinsic monetisable value.

@JimmyHoffa Well. So would Security.SE, wouldn't it?
Oh, new person. hello @JimmyHoffa
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa Perhaps, but there's also the fact that the vast majority of code does not do anything special.
> if YouTube didn't actively seek copyright violators, they wouldn't be able to get RIAA off it's back
@TopinFrassi can't say as though I know? Does Security.SE have much proprietary stuff get posted?

Zak

I was going to make a lame joke about the C++ pattern before I realised it didn't fit the acronym...
@Zak the property owners who can match up the property on their drives with the publicized clones on a site?
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa Basically, how likely is the situation where: Somebody has possession of code that is a) Not theirs. b) that they would want to post on a public forum. c) that would cause actual financial harm if it were to become public domain and d), (c) to the level where anybody would actually notice/care
@JimmyHoffa I don't think it's related to proprietary stuff more than posting on a public website about security breaches. Joe Blow could post on Security about a breach he discovered at work. That would be bad
19:47
@Zak I totally agree that c is very unlikely, I think a and b are not only likely, but making up a vast portion of CR.SE content (lots of juniors who don't realize the meanings and mechanisms surrounding code property rights post here looking to improve)
FWIW I regularly worry about posting code from work on CR/SO in case I get recognised. But that's mostly because my name is 1) fairly unique and 2) matches my real name.
@TopinFrassi oh yes, I absolutely agree
@HATMAN You can call me Santa
James Santa
@TopinFrassi double-oh-santa
@Zak Do remember, IP trolls bilk millions out of companies in aggregate by simply asserting IP rights with a settle-out-of-court-for-a-feee approach... It can be less about the financial damage than about the possible gains available by asserting your rights.
Zak
Zak
19:49
@JimmyHoffa There's also the fact that, for most non-very-professional code, anybody with enough skill to understand your code enough to repurpose it for their use, is skilled enough to just write their own.
Just referenced a CRitter to Programmers.
@TopinFrassi lol
Zak
Zak
Plus, like I said, most of the stuff that gets posted on CR doesn't do anything particularly special.
SE has likely a decent enough revenue that if an IP troll wanted to hold their nose to the grind stone, they could give them the option of $50k settle-out-of-court, or spend more on a protracted legal battle over some snippet of code that is of nearly no value or relevance.
Zak
Zak
Or even that unique.
19:51
@Zak Well, there ain't much unique code.. :p
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa I think that's a problem for SE's lawyers.
What are your thoughts on copyrighted code? How does that work?
Zak
Zak
I assume they get paid to think about / avoid such situations.
So I'll take their word that the current legal/licensing agreements for SE are adequate.
@Zak rights are the important part though. If I own a lake that has completely dried up and somebody puts a house on the land, it may be worthless garbage land but I can still sue the ever loving crap out of them for their non-permitted use of my property
Zak
Zak
19:52
@JimmyHoffa Sure, but how exactly are you going to prove it's your code?
And how is it SE's fault that somebody else posted it?
@Zak exactly! It is probably a problem for SE's lawyers. Which brings me to the curious case of CR.SE- just was thinking about it earlier... what a legal mess it could be
@Zak Exactly
@Zak That is also what I'm wondering
The original poster seems like should be the one getting sued
@JimmyHoffa That would be an interesting discussion to me if I knew anything about licensing's laws :p
Zak
Zak
19:53
@JimmyHoffa Well, none of us are lawyers, so I assume they know what they're doing. If you're really curious, consider putting a Meta post about it, or ask on Law.se
Tonight is "Get wasted because the week is long" Wednesday. I love Wednesdays.
@TopinFrassi honestly I don't much either - but I know just enough about the concepts of IP rights to know that CR.SE is surely a bit of a strange situation...

Zak
@TopinFrassi Tomorrow is "Get wasted because the company's paying" :)
@TopinFrassi That's scotching right.

Zak
Zak
19:55
Interesting. I can edit a post to respond to a post in the future.
@JimmyHoffa But, as Zak said, most code here looks more like "Hey I tried this to learn on X/Y" or "Look at that pattern everyone wrote 300 times already, have I done it well?" So I'm not sure there's a problem..
@Zak whoa law.se got made? I had heard on numerous occasions they didn't want to wade into the mess that could cause
We basically have 2 half days in a row. I'm not sure how I feel about this because coding with no distractions is cathartic.
@JimmyHoffa Pretty sure there's a massive obligatory "IANAL" at the beginning of every single answer
@TopinFrassi you say most, I would say there is likely still a large amount that is juniors trying to get review of their work for improvements before they submit it and get potentially smacked or rewarded by their seniors
Interpret that as you will
19:56
Aw man, any events here cost at least 40$. We had a diner once, with salad and cheese. TWELVE bucks. I skipped that event.
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa It's people writing stuff on the internet, who are you going to sue for what, exactly?
@JimmyHoffa Maybe! But well, we can't know that! That's a card we could play I guess. "Oh, but we didn't know that was proprietary code"
@Zak The Internet. :p
@Zak SE for hosting - and not me goodness no.
@TopinFrassi I believe a woman called Barbara Streisand tried that once..
@DanPantry rly? that's funny
19:57
@TopinFrassi won't stop the legal fees from being in the many many thousands.. which is why IP trolls just settle out of court
@TopinFrassi The story goes that essentially someone put up a photo of her house and she tried to sue the person who put it up to take it down. Up until that point, only 3 people - including her - had seen the photo. After she took the site to court, millions had seen it. And that's why it is called the Streisand effect.
Look into IP trolls some time; it's more disturbing than you might think. There's like 2 or 3 judges in the nation that have heard nearly all IP cases because IP trolls know those judges almost always side with them.
I am getting nothing done . . . I gotta go for a bit, might check in later
@JimmyHoffa But. Well, I bring a whole other argument to the table. Let's say I'm company X and I see my code on a Stack Exchange site. My whole programmers team rely on Stack Overflow on a daily basis to survive. If I sue SO to death, wouldn't that mean like... TONS of hours lost in debugging/searching etc. Wouldn't a brilliant company try not to make a mess about it and deal with this without courts
@DanPantry Ahahah. Well that's dumb
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa I think now we're firmly in the realm of speculating on matters we have no expertise whatsoever in, and that SE (presumably) pay some very professional people to take care of. Not much I can add at this point.
19:59
With respect I'm not so sure the whole legal discussion really fits this chat room other than simply being tangential to the code licensing changes
I might be bias though because nearly all code I write is under ISC or MIT anyway
Ugh, my room in the winter has two modes: Freeze dead or sufficate
@TopinFrassi haha you think the company's doing stuff like that are thinking in any way about the productivity of their workers? IP trolls are legal companies that buy failed companies for the IP, fire everyone (if anybody is left employed) and goes around suing anyone and everyone they can claim are using the same techniques or code samples.
Zak
Zak
@JimmyHoffa I think we're definitely going off-topic here. Would you mind moving this conversation to the Nth Monitor if you want to continue it.
@DanPantry sorry if I have taken the room off topic; was just a curiousity I've pondered in the past when thinking about CR.SE

I don't know what to say except "name things for what they are used for". like, a filename As String parameter is better than str As String, but workbookFileName As String is even better. I'm not sure I ever read anything specifically about naming, except perhaps Spolsky's "Make wrong code look wrong" blog post (about system hungarian ha!), and maybe perhaps Robert C. Martin's "Clean Code", but that book is much larger than just naming...
...or does it cover naming at all? can't remember

I think the systems hungarian article is a good place to start. I remember that one having an impression when I was learning all of this a *whole* 3 months ago (God, has it only been 3 months?)
I still haven't wrapped my head around the license change. Sounds like more paperwork.
I don't like paperwork.
where's the button?

@Mast The tl;dr version I got was "Unless your job is working with licensing, keep on acting like you were before"
@Zak Yea, but that's not what the rest of the question looks like.

I'm trying to process the following virtual pages in the 4 page frames in order: 3,4,6,5,7,4,8 Now, I completely understand the LRU stack implementation. But, when I implement LRU using OBL (One-Block-Lookahead), I seem to have a duplicate page number in the frame. Is that possible? Implementation using LRU and OBL: 3,4,6,5,7,4,8 3: - 3, , ,4 4: hit 6: - 3,6,

Okay, this is way too much to read. Where's the "I hate licenses" button so I can hide all that legal talk and pretend I never saw it? — Mat's Mug 33 secs ago
@Mat'sMug When there are 40 comments already, that's too chatty.

A: The MIT License – Clarity on Using Stack Overflow Code

Ashley MedwayWhat?! Am I the only person that doesn't understand what this all means? This really needs a TL;DR. I was under the impression that any answers I provided on Stack Overflow that contained code are to be used freely, otherwise why would we post the code? What I want answering is What do I need ...

done already
@200_success It's relatively constructive though. It clearly states a definitive problem with the question (well, the information conveyed in the question).
The question needs to be precise. The TLDR can come when the new policy is announced.

Q: "Time till" program using databases

JoeBeastlyGerbilI have created a program which works out days, hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds until a date which the user inputs. Is it possible to shorten/make the output a little clearer? from datetime import datetime while True: inp = input("Enter date in format yyyy/mm/dd hh:mm:ss") try:...

Q: Module for implementation in multiple version-controlled spreadsheets

Taylor OstbergSo I maintain a large number of spreadsheets which are stored on a version-controlled server. In each spreadsheet maintained on this server there is a module containing the following code, which is intended to verify that the spreadsheet is the latest revision, opened from the server, and is lock...

is something up with ? what's up with all these new questions lately? (not a bad thing, actually)

Q: Optimizing simulation of image transfer over noisy channel with a repetition code

StepTNTFollowing this question, I've tried to rewrite some core methods to avoid using String for bit operations, and I ended up using BitStream. The cose is almost 8x faster than before but it still looks quite slow, because it processes 15 images per minute (0.25 fps). I think that there's still room...

A: The MIT License – Clarity on Using Stack Overflow Code

200_successIn essence, this proposal is to move from a copyleft license (CC-BY-SA 3.0) to a permissive license for code. (By default, it's basically the most permissive license possible, nearly equivalent to public domain with a liability disclaimer.) Having thought about it for a couple of hours, I've sh...
