@200_success do you have a reference for this comment codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/110709/… ?
i googled and found this "boolean ... This data type represents one bit of information, but its "size" isn't something that's precisely defined."
Well, if you have many booleans, you could pack them. If you have just one, how would it be handled differently from an other number?
i would have guessed it would just take up 8 bits. maybe i'm missing something
Maybe. Whatever. The question is just going to get deleted anyway.
@DanPantry I came over. I already heard the news.

This is borderline off-topic as it would be more suitable for codereview.stackexchange.com However take a close look at returnAuthor. For one, why are you passing a Book and not just a String with the author name, don't use == for string equality check, and you are returning the entire book list, not just the list of books by that author. Returning null is a bad habit as well. — Mark Rotteveel 17 secs ago
@MarkRotteveel I'm not sure about that. codereview is for review of code that works. I'm afraid this code doesn't qualify. — Eran 26 secs ago
@Eran You might be right, but in the absence of actual specific questions it sounds more like a request for code review; anyway, it is also off topic here. — Mark Rotteveel 39 secs ago

Random question: has anyone here ever went to an Opera? I'm trying to figure out what one should wear for a show on an afternoon. :D
@DJanssens with a suite and tie you won't do it wrong
I have, and while Heslacher is right, for a matinee I would suggest that most people will be more casual.
I've been to some ballets for my gf birthdays and noticed that I was the only person wearing a full blown suit. Most even seemed to wear jeans.
@rolfl that's also my impression, however I never went to an Opera before :p
Thanks
14:05
@DJanssens "Nowadays" I think the performers are happy to see butts in seats.... regardless of what's covering them
@DJanssens Casual is just fine, depending on how 'high-end' the opera is.
If you're going to some very fancy place, dress with it. If it's in a random hall, casual is just fine.
On a personal level, though, I like dressing up and making a smart evening of it. My wife and I will go to a smart restaurant, and pretend we're rich.
haha I agree, but on an afternoon this might look weird no?
We have been known to completely overdress, it is amazong how differently you get treated when you go to a restaurant and you're in a tux.
I wouldn't hesitate to wear a suit for an evening performance.
14:09
It won't look weird if you overdress. Also, you may not be the only one who does.
May be more appropriate to codereview. — Jarod42 43 secs ago
But the minimum 'expected' is lower than you would think.
Heck, what do I know, I've been to an opera only twice.
:D
Well I'm going tomorrow, hope it will be fun. At least it will be an experience :)
Remember, it's not over until....
I did hear however that some operas tend to be quite lengthy.

When I was at university a friend and I decided to treat our SO's to a special night out. We both worked at a restaurant, and convinced a colleague of ours to bring us 4 meals... delivered to the lawn in the middle of a traffic roundabout just outside the university's main gate. We all dressed up smart.... and told the SO's that we were going to a really busy, "happening" place. It was a good evening ;-)
@JeroenVannevel I'll bring Stroustrup with me. That will keep me busy for a while.
Nowdays the cops would arrest you, I imagine

@rolfl depends... some roundabouts are huge enough for a whole festival to happen in the middle

> The PAL implementation of CoCreateGuid is currently using uuid_generate. This will be based on high-quality randomness if available, otherwise it falls back to an algorithm that incorporates the local ethernet MAC address along with the current time and a pseudo-random generator. @TheCoffeeCup I understand where that downvote is coming from then...
File is mostly obsolete
@Vogel612 True...
@Vogel612 I'd still upvote it, though, it gives some good points.
The downvoter should have left a comment about why they downvoted
@DanPantry Thanks!
@DanPantry IMO it's pretty obvious why it was downvoted...
Then again, people should downvote things that don't add to discussion on reddit rather than what they disagree with, but that doesn't happen either *shrug*
18:13
@DanPantry Which is why I think there is a serial downvoter at me: everyone that downvotes me gives me no comment.
@Vogel612 It might be obvious to you, but it's certainly not obvious to @TheCoffeeCup and @TheCoffeeCup is the one that needs to know, really :s
its better to remove all ambiguity than to assume the person will know, otherwise they would not have posted the irrelevant part anyway
since the points made are either useless (see File.separator) or "harmful" by not promoting current best practice
then again a comment might have been useful, yes
I mean, isn't there a pop up that tells you to leave a comment after downvoting an answer/question?
it only appears sometimes though, IIRC
@Vogel612 I think it appears if your rep is lower than a certain amount.

Q: pthread_cond_wait() based multithreaded linux daemon skeleton in c

user3490458I'm trying to design a multithreaded daemon for an industrial automation related project. The daemon will be using a number of 3rd party libs like MQTT, mysql, etc.. My idea is to have worker threads (or callbacks registered with these 3rd party libs) relay events to the main thread using a glob...

Q: Rails concerns and models - organizing codes

Bóta LászlóThis is my first rails project (yeap, I study ruby and rails by this project) I have read about concerns which is a great tool, but I have a confusion how I should redesign the models. Cause some models have the similar fields, but the validations are not the same always. For example: The Phone ...

@Phrancis Now, is it actually just plain black, or am I having issues on my end?
It's just plain black

@EthanBierlein Dammit Ethan, add comments when you roll back, PLEASE
Read everything please. There was one on the deleted answer ^^
How is the length give to you? You probably need to loop through that and parse then string. It would be better to get something working and ask the code review stack about efficiency. And if you can't get something working that you tried then come back here and ask a specific question on your codedstudeba just now
and you rolled back the edit
that was made in response to that comment
without anything for OP to go with.
communication is the single most important thing
> Programming is the art of telling another person what you want the computer to do
I did communicate. Did you not read the damn comments on the deleted answer?

as is sustainable moderation

^^ that's the only comment on the deleted answer.
and it doesn't explain why you rolled back the edit
Can we calm down please :-)

Q: Bash command helper

Dave KennedyI'm writing a program to help with remembering complex bash commands. On invoking the program, it asks for a description of the desired operation, e.g., "increase volume" or "find orphaned packages", and displays the commands matching the input ordered by closest match. Matching is determined by...

Does anyone know if bowling alleys are open on Sunday's?
Pretty random question, @EBrown, but I would expect that most are
Damnit @EthanBierlein.

lol
But, first result was the bowling alley 150 metres from my place.
And they are open on Sunday.
So, I'm going bowling tomorrow (maybe).
Google creeps me out sometimes.
@EBrown you might like this TED talk: ted.com/talks/…
@janos Oh wow, thanks for that!

I watched it today, and it seems somewhat related to your sentiment ;-)
Very much related, that's a cool find.
@janos I'm glad to see you're okay.
thanks Dan, me too
I was just reading about those attacks last night, 129 people in total were killed.

That's a brilliant talk, thanks for finding that @janos.
Thanks for the answer (and the code review). It's been a couple years since I wrote a proper library, and wanted to make sure I wasn't making trouble for myself down the road. — Rolan 53 secs ago

A: Query optimization in MYSQL for a query with sub queries?

Phrancis In General, how to optimize sub queries which have select statements in it? Here are some ideas to get you started. I will respect the fact that it is an assignment and in the end, you will gain much better understanding of the SQL queries by going through it yourself and learning along the ...

@Phrancis bonus points if it was "you should totally drop that and use jQuery instead"
20:58
LOL
Optimising MySQL? You should totally drop that and use jQuery instead.
and you even have an upvote on it. Now that's almost a miracle
(The funny thing is that that is not really a joke, I expect to see many "you should drop that and use mongodb instead" comments)
only 2 upvotes on that answer?
definitely deserving of more
