Not a post I'm proud of, but it does say what we do and don't with code size.
> Minification is the process of shrinking the size of your source code in order to optimize the process of transferring it over the Internet (that's a rough/broad definition). It's a very real and very important part of optimizing code for client-side languages like JavaScript.

Ah, thanks for digging that up

Well, it's not a canonical source.
So your new comment is very iffy.
Make it a meta if you want to be sure. As said, I'm not proud of that meta question but it is handled there (kind of, it's all fuzzy if you ask me).

Maybe if we get an answer from the OP: I'm still not sure whether it's minification they're asking for.

9:25 AM
The only comment I can come up with is "I don't think this is a good fit for code review"
The OP isn't asking for a code review, he's asking about a concept, and the snippet he has provided is pretty narrow for interpretation
(I can't even understand what his code is doing, but it might be because its too early in the morning)
My Ruby is rusty, but not rusty enough to not be able to read it; I have no idea what your code is doing. Could you please explain the purpose of it? At any rate, I don't think this is going to be a good fit for CodeReview. This question appears to be asking about a conceptual problem, rather than asking for a review in general (please correct me if I am wrong). — Dan Pantry 5 secs ago

If he's not asking for a code review, you could tell him it's not a good fit for Code Review because he isn't asking for a code review.
Your comments seems to convey that quite well.

Always check the weather forecast before you leave the house

@JeroenVannevel I don't need to. I live in the UK. The weather forecast is always "lol, its raining"
6

10:20 AM
@DanPantry Not true. The forecast is often "lol, about to rain". That is why England has "Lords", "Hyde Park", and "Wimbledon". The weather is "We better go quick and get something done before the rain starts!", followed by "Oh, the rain started, thank goodness Paul McCartney's here to sing some songs!".

@rolfl False. No one (except my gran) would ever say "thank goodness, Paul McCartney's here"

I might have told our security expert someone had the encryption keys for all of our passwords on their Outlook.. that person is not happy with me now. :( Its a shame because they were a close friend haha
(When I say encryption keys, I mean the private key)

10:31 AM
lol
Never keep keys like that in plain text stored in e-mail.

She was storing it through obfuscation in one of her tasks in outlook as a way of keeping it safe.
It was so safe, she told me and a colleague about where it was..

I mean, what do you with your private stuff is usually private as long as you're doing it for yourself. If your privates are part of the company, it's a different story.

Which is the point at which I decided to alert the head of security lol
She was regularly decrypting passwords (for some reason) in a sql query, whichi s why she had it
I'm not sure why she needed the private key, frankly

@DanPantry Wut? Why?

or why she was decrypting passwords
She does user support so maybe she was giving the password back to the users?
Either way, thats a red flag to me

10:34 AM
Yea, I had hoped that practice died out by now.

i'd post on the workspace SE but I figure the case is pretty unique
and it would be very identifying

You don't 'give back' a password. You reset it.

to be fair, in this company I saw some idiot sales person sending a customers password and username over the internal help desk system
ignoring the fact he sent the password over plaintext
that means one of two things
either he asked the customer for their password - and they gave it to him
or he has the private key for decrypting passwords and access to the database as a sales rep
@_@

That's sales, they don't know better. Although luckily there are companies who also instruct their sales people in security.

That's true, they don't know better, but how they got the password worries me

The first would be the customers fault AND the companies fault because employees should be forbidden to ask passwords. The second would be just the company his fault.
Or the sales rep simply asks one of the DB guys every time he gets a request. But that wouldn't be any better.
Oh well, the joys of security in companies.

So, I built a tool for work, then, last night, I was demoing it for my wife, and I realize that I had actually built a landmine ;-)
8

I like to imagine how that conversation turned out with your wife

We have hundreds of servers at work that need to be installed, with ubuntu, so I have written a program that "remasters" the Ubuntu installation CD.
The remastered installation CD will, when booted from, automatically identify, and then install the system.
This is good for work, but then, as I was saying to my wife, "I hope nobody actually takes a copy of the CD and burns it, and leaves it lying around"....
... a person who put that disk in their drive and rebooted, would soon have a nice clean install of Ubuntu.... not a single question asked.

lol
so if i read that correctly, essentially you made a CD that will install ubuntu without any prompts

Correct, not a single prompt. Nothing... nada, zilch

oops
Out of curiosity, why do you guys use ubuntu for servers at work? I was under the impression that other systems like raw debian or centos were "better" for servers
And bear in mind I'm not trying to make an educated point here because I have no idea if one is actually "better" than theo ther

You work for IBM, don't you? I thought Debian do custom builds for corporate situations?

That's a complicated question. In this case, though, it is because of a number of reasons. The bulk of them are cost, and the expectations of the software being installed on the machines.

@Quill No need for custom builds when you have tools like ansible/docker etc.

IBM and Ubuntu have a relationship for a number of reasons too....

What OS do the POS systems run on?

@Quill - that's another complicated questin, but, I believe a bunch of them still run OS/2
Also, IBM no longer does POS.
(at least not that I recall).

11:28 AM
Ah, the local supermarkets all have IBM POS on their terminals, the non-self serve ones that is

it is.

@rolfl I know you do linux systems, any chance you have some resources on linux? just someo f the basic stuff I'd need to know for systems administration, such as user management (chmod/chroot/chown etc)

1:26 PM
I think there should always be some kind of organizational process to control those - code reviews, pair programming, whatever. Now if some people prove over time to be impervious to team culture and customs, maybe they shouldn't be in the team in the first place. Sadly, this happens from time to time. I don't think strong technical barriers are of much use or convey the right message for other team members there. — guillaume31 52 secs ago

@DanPantry That is a really, really open-ended question.
also chroot is the odd man out in: chmod/chroot/chown
@DanPantry If I were recommending a course-of-action for someone starting out with Linux as a "how to get started in Linux administration", I would suggest you get a computer at home, install ubuntu, and make it a file-server for you r home network: samba, nfs, users, etc.
Then, add a web server - apache, or nginx.
Then add something that requires dynamic web pages - something like mediawiki for your own home-wiki site (I have one).
By the time you are done with that you will know: installation, LVM, user admin, database deployment, authentication, web stack, and more.
The first time through, for a new user, with access to the "net", I would expect that will take a month of weekends to get right.

@rolfl I already run ElementaryOS at home exclusively
using Docker and basic user management through sshd on a virtual machine in the cloud too
Its not necessarily that I know nothing, but I'd like some reference material

@DanPantry Nothing beats the man pages and info pages.
All the other reference material I know of are specific to particular distributions, etc.
You can get redhat books, ubuntu books, and there are a few general UNIX books.

I remember one which told me I'd won 15 Million Quadrillion Dollars

@DanPantry Try using google translate's proxy.

@DanPantry And now they blocked the proxy?

1:46 PM
@Mast No. They just applied the filter to it. :^)

All 3rd party proxies are blocked as well

@DanPantry It's your boss's way of saying you should be working instead I guess.

@Mast They didn't block reddit or 2nd monitor.
So they can't care that much
:^)

So next time we want to dump text on you we should post it on Reddit. Right.

@rolfl Do you happen to have an opinion about audits on CR?

Q: Entity Framework 7 In Memory Database - Unit Testing using xUnit

FrancoI'm using EF7 with In-Memory database and xUnit for repository testing. I'd like to know if it's a good practice initializing the database in this manner for reuse it in every test method, specifically through the Initialize() method: private Context _context; private BrandsRepos...

@Mat'sMug It's terrible. 800M, if someone was to call them to tell them they won 800M they would never believe that. Why would an FBI e-mail make it true.. ahah

Because gullible people see "FBI" and think "oh shit oh shit oh shit"
> "I'd better wire the FBI money so I can accept this nice monetary gift and not get arrested and imprisoned."

There's no point to trying to make sense of something that doesn't make sense on purpose.

2:09 PM
right... whatever

I like the part that goes "send $120 over to Nigeria so we can process the funds"

@EthanBierlein > agentfjames@lycos.com
Best email ever.

Why is it always Nigeria

I also like how the "$800,000,000.00" changes in the middle of the email.
> ... in order to immediately ship your prize of $800,000.00 USD via ...
What happened to the other three zero's?

2:15 PM
Yeah, well, you know, it's still a lot of zeroes

well, scammers make mistakes too

Next email goes $800.00

Yaay Yearling badge on CR! :D

2:16 PM
@DanPantry 10/10 would propose on Area51

@Gemtastic congrats!

> if you do not receive your winning prize of $800,000.00 we shall be held responsible for the loss and this shall invite a penalty of $3,000 which will be made PAYABLE ONLY to you (The Winner).
Right, because the FBI would be responsible for the loss of my foreign lottery winnings.

Uh-huh. Yeah.

@EBrown give us $130 or we'll fine you $3k?
wat

I should really work on getting more stuff up here for CR:ing

2:17 PM
@Gemtastic I'm the same... I review once a month, maybe.

No, it's you'll see the 800000000 or we'll give you 3K

> ... that you legally won the sum of $800,000.00 USD. from a Lottery Company outside the United States ...
> ... henceforth the stated amount of $800,000,000.00 USD. has been deposited with Bank Of America.

I think anyone that believes that they won $8PlusManyZeroes in a lottery they didn't enter deserves to be scammed out of $130 lol

> NOTE: In order to ensure rapid response for the Fund won, contact AGENT JAMES FREEMAN as soon as possible providing the required information needed from you above

2:18 PM
All right, it's a scam, and a bad one. Move on?

Sure
I think we're done reviewing the hilarity of this scam email.

Q: Bind variables in PHP-MySQL

Ronak PatelI am using below code to execute MySQL query in PHP. $cus_id = '1'; $query = new QUERY(); $clause = "SELECT * FROM customers WHERE cus_id=:cus_id AND status='ACTIVE'"; $params = array('cus_id'=>$cus_id); $result = $query->run($clause, $params)->fetchAll(); Now the question is: is it secure eno...

I can actually see a lot of people falling for this.

I just get information about an expiring home warranty on a home I don't actually own.

2:21 PM
@DanPantry I don't feel confident enough to make reviews :/

Dammit chat, why are you deciding to freeze at random intervals!?

Q: Calculate all possible distributions of n objects to k containers

Jacobus21Let's say I have 5 apples, thus . I have three bags (), each having the capacities of 4, 4 and 2: I'd like to calculate the number of ways the 5 apples can be distributed into those bags; each bag can be empty. The results for this example would be following output: Thus there are 13 possib...

@Gemtastic You'll learn a lot by making reviews :) Start with simple stuff you feel you master. It can be only about naming/spacing/little bugs. Then, you'll feel more confident, have more experience and start reviewing more stuff!

@Gemtastic Congrats!
@EthanBierlein F5 is your friend.

@Gemtastic Or you can post a really stupid first question like I did. :)

2:29 PM
@Mast Not today.

@TopinFrassi I kinda don't feel like I master anything. But I can ask questions :)

@Gemtastic I don't review often either. I prefer writing questions and just hanging out here. Learn it slowly.
Meta participation shouldn't be underestimated either.

@Mast That's kinda what I'm doing :P

@Gemtastic Asking questions is good too :p And once you've asked enough questions, nothing stops you from taking what you learnt in the reviews of your question, and apply it to another question were people are doing the same mistakes you did!

There's a whole lot of people not writing many reviews while still being active here.

2:31 PM
And thanks for the congratulations. This year has been filled with so much knowledge! From Zero to "Don't call core JavaEE module Jersey specific! You haven't used anything specific to Jersey yet!?"
@TopinFrassi Yeah, I just gotta learn to work away the bad habits myself first (and recognize them)

I just got Popular Question for a 10 month old question lol.

Sometimes you get 7 different answers to a post with like 100 lines of actual code.

VHDL isn't popular :-(

@Gemtastic Exact! :) We're here for that. Post that code for review! :p
@EBrown Aaalllll because of null-checks. :p

@TopinFrassi Only one was for null-checks.
Oh wow, that got tweeted?

2:34 PM
@EBrown I know, I just wanted to point it out again to joke you :p

@TopinFrassi Well thanks to you I had to add four null-checks in. >.>

eh eh :p

consider asking this question on codereview.stackexchange.com it will be more on topic there — TheLethalCoder 9 secs ago

@EBrown I read about that. It's indeed why CR is so nice

Which this answer could use some love.

2:38 PM
WTF...
I wanted to manually award a bounty. Now the bounty is up but I can't award it in the next 24 hours?!
Must have screwed up somewhere, big time...

A: Do we want to enable the review auditing feature that discourages robo-reviewing?

rolflNo Audits are a premature solution to a problem that's not particularly bad, and will also be fixed by other solutions "soon". Currently the reputation needed to participate in the review queues is 500 rep. In full sites the reputation needed is 3000 Fixing the problem by introducing review au...

@Mast The bounty is not just about the rep, it is about drawing attention to the posts. The post will likely get more rep from the additional exposure than the bounty amount itself.

@rolfl The answer could definitely use some extra attention. This may not be so bad after all. Thanks for enlightening me.

2:53 PM
That answer already has my +1 (the question too ;-) But, it is an awesome answer.

A: VHDL mux in need of generics

PaebbelsThere are 4 ways to a solve this: Solution 1: You can define a fixed width STD_LOGIC_VECTOR (SLV), which can be used to construct other vectors (let's call them STD_LOGIC_VECTOR_VECTORs (SLVV). subtype T_SLV_8 is STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0); -- define a Byte type T_SLVV_8 is array(...

I'm attempting to murder a zombie. Kind folks, your help would be appreciated. (The question didn't need much attention, I feel like I addressed all there was to talk about)

Q: Redirecting a user

inikiWhen the user clicks the first button ('Back to List' button), I redirect the user to the Employee List page. Can you please review this and suggest if there is any better way of achieving the same? @using (@Html.BeginForm("Edit", "Employee", FormMethod.Post, new { id = "editEmployeeForm" })) { ...

@rolfl Yea, that guy went above and beyond what I expected. He's one of the reasons I got hooked to this site.

Thanks santa-folks

Also, as an aside, a good way to earn reputation is offer bounties ... I have come out on top that way before. Sacrifice 50 rep to be featured, score 10 upvotes and net +50 ;-)

It's the first bounty I've placed on a question of myself. It's not an often used tag so I probably won't make par on it, but I wasn't here for the reputation anyway.
As my 2.5k over a year indicates.
