A: My own version of a search binary tree

TheDesertMonkDesign I highly recommend that you create a Tree interface that can be implemented by a BinarySearchTree class. Take your insert, delete, find, etc. methods and declare them over there. Suppose you decide to create a Red-Black tree, then you could create a RedBlackTree class which implements th...

There we go. I knew someone would star that. =)
@RubberDuck More than one.
Stupid mobile chat anyway.
Gonna go shoot a zombie, hopefully.
You can't star messages in mobile chat?
00:04
@EthanBierlein We need to get the mods to post that in the mod room.
Sounds good.
Not until someone else does it first @EthanBierlein.
@EthanBierlein Almost pin worthy.
Problem is, we are graduated.
Kind-of.
Half-assed.
You know the drill.
I don't accept a half-assed "graduation" as a graduation.
And I'm still waiting on my SO swag. The suspense is killing me.
00:08
@EthanBierlein Neither do I, but they revoked our option to disagree.
So, how does one showcase experience if most experience is gathered in closed-source projects of which a particular contribution doesn't make sense without context?
I really don't have much to say other than that I'm pissed about some of the decisions Stack Exchange has made concerning the community of Code Review in the past half a year or so.
We all are @Ethan.
@EthanBierlein ouch
@Mast Just say you did. You can't share closed-source code anyway.
@Mast explain? For a recruiter?
That ^^
00:11
Have you read @RubberDuck's blog post?
@RubberDuck I was so excited when I got the email
Lol
So was I @Quill!
@RubberDuck Mainly
You tell them that you'd be happy to talk about it, but can't legally/morally share the code.
But that you'd be happy to provide some other form of "proof".
00:14
How can you proof something if you can't talk about it?
Well, if you can't talk about it, you've got a problem.
But, you should be able to explain a bit about a project you worked on and it's high level architecture.
The funny thing is, once my resume got past these clowns and in front of other developers, finding work was easy. <-- That
Or, a particularly nasty problem you faced on the way.
=)
@RubberDuck Sure, I can explain the high level stuff. But that doesn't proof a thing
Anyone skimming the end report should be able to explain the high level stuff.
it does if you were the architect of the project
00:16
@RubberDuck What is SO swag?
That's why we write it.
It's pretty common to solve a simple problem during an interview.

Q: 10 Million Questions - Let's Share Some Stories That the Number Doesn't Convey

Tim PostIt's easy to look at numbers; numbers tell us that many developers have been helped by what we built. That alone is very warming and makes us feel exceptionally great about what we're doing, wouldn't it be nice to take a little time on a Friday to share some stories that the numbers can't convey?...

Or prior to one.
That ^^ @SirPython
@RubberDuck Never had to till now, but I'm getting into the practice of studying them just in case.
00:17
I'd assume that'd be the one, unless he's become a moderator / done something worthy of SO's noticing
Ah, perhaps I should have fully read that meta.
I counted 7< CR regulars on there, 8 if I count myself
@Quill That's not too bad.
> *Can you send us some code from your current employer?*

No. I cannot. Even if I wasn’t contractually bound by a non-disclosure agreement, I will not send you code I was paid to write for somebody else. However, thank you for letting me know about the level of ethics at your company and that I don’t want to work for you.
That ^ still makes my blood boil.
Did you just walk out right then and there?
00:19
@RubberDuck Why?
@RubberDuck Completely agree, I'd never do such a thing. However, it leaves the door open for what other kind of proof you can provide.
Yeah @Hosch250. I ended the call right then.
@EthanBierlein They have no right to ask for a potential competitor's code.
@Mast I suppose it'd be because the regulars kinda drift toward higher level questions, or, questions harder to answer
I can pull some screenshots of the product in beta which wouldn't compromise anything, but it wouldn't proof anything either.
00:21
@Mast Don't worry about proof. If they ask for proof, you can say "You calling me a liar?"
are you part of an open source project that you can send code from? if that's a thing
It does @Mast, but if you can speak intelligently about the work you've done, that's more proof than a code sample could ever provide.
@Quill that's exactly what got me hired.
@Hosch250 To be honest, if I'd be on the interview table, I'd assume most interviewees are buffing the truth up till a lie.
@Mast Who's to say whether or not you took the code off the web somewhere?
@Hosch250 the same thing applies to code you've 'wrote' at work
00:22
@RubberDuck Basically you request the clown to invite an engineer and start talking.
Exactly.
That ^^
Who knows anything about recording your screen as video and/or putting shit on YouTube?
@Phrancis yeah, sure
what kind of recording?
@Phrancis If you have a nVidia card, just stick to Afterburner and downsample afterwards.
00:25
Are you recording your screen, or just a terminal?
I need to record my screen display, along with the audio of the computer and preferably a microphone as well
Ah, that won't do audio.
Right. I need the audio
@Hosch250 For low fps that works wonders, yea.
00:26
Mac? or Windows?
@Hosch250 I tried that with dual monitors. It does all sorts of strange things.
Hm, can you use Skype for something like that?
I would try out ScreenFlow
@Phrancis Probably
00:27
@Phrancis Don't think so.
if you want your face on the video, open a photo booth window
@Phrancis With Skype, you can share screens but cannot record (afaik)
Yeah just found that out @SirPython
@SirPython You can transmit your screen and audio, right?
Hey looks like Quicktime can do it on Mac
00:28
oh yeah, that too
Yup! However, it only works as long as you are in a call with someone; it is a substitute to face sharing. @Mast
I thought I was missing one
Cool I hope I can get this done tonight, that will make for a nifty CR post with video incuded
(or a screenshot of it anyways, I know you can't embed YouTube into posts)
You could do Video --> GIF
I assume there will be a link to the video. ;-)
00:33
=) looking forward to it @Phrancis
Me too :)
@Phrancis CR post with video? That may be new on CR.
I've seen it elsewhere on the network, but I don't recall a CR post with video yet.

@SuperBiasedMan Usually I'd agree with you, but in this case it's a very simple problem with a very simple function pulled right from a library.
I'm not saying it's a good fit.
But more context wouldn't make a difference here.
He provided a string and states he wants to convert it to a dictionary.
I'm not familiar with that library so I have no idea what it's supposed to do, but this sounds like a cheap fix.
10:21
Yeah I looked it up and it looks like it's a library for checking Python syntax. It seems like this is a roundabout use of it.
The thing is, I'd suggest to use JSON if I knew the data source reliably and thought OP could trust it to fit JSON conventions. I figured when the lack of information blocked me from answering meaningfully that was a flag that the code is too stubby.
Assume the string will follow the same conventions as the example string given.
It looks JSON-ish enough that it's possible it should've been handled as such in the first place.
I think he reads a string/object to use as configuration.
Hmmm, perhaps more context would help. He's definitely solving some problem the wrong way around.
Funny, it wont read as JSON even when I convert it all to double quotes. I must be missing something in it.
But yeah, I'm concerned it's an XY problem.

As a matter of fact, the first element extracted is always the first element I insert into the heap. Can please someone help me and tell me ...

@Mast Do mods not get to see who raised the flag automatically?
@CaptainObvious Y no language tag?
@Zak IIRC flags are anonymous
@RubberDuck Fixed it for ya

@Mast simul-edit
@RubberDuck It's obviously C++, what gave away it's '14? I'm not familiar with that version.
Thanks for the upgrade.
@Mast the ideone gave it away ideone.com/yIz1vR
@RubberDuck Compiles just fine under just C++
Also consider using codereview.stackexchange.com if you just want a review of working code. — juharr 50 secs ago
@Mast didn't say it wouldn't. I just looked at it and it said c++14... I didn't mean to remove the other tag. Glitch in the system.

ugh. the annoying thing with Rubberduck earning visibility, is that now when you try to google VBE issues instead of finding relevant Stack Overflow posts (if any) you find posts on Code Review, and Rubberduck issues on GitHub...
@Mat'sMug I consider that to be a good problem to have ^.

I love it how he instantly drops in at the mention of his name ^^

@SimonForsberg - the "debate" about whether performance/optimization should be merged was supposed to have been settled months ago. My meta Question was intended to only trigger the completion of that decision. Instead, you (and indirectly, me) have reopened the whole debate, and it is a 2-year setback.

Q: How should I properly instantiate a class from a template?

user2651804public enum Testing { PETER(new PersonConfiguration("Peter", "MALE", 5.7)), SUZANNE(new PersonConfiguration("SUZANNE", "FEMALE", 5.4)), GEORGE(new PersonConfiguration("George", "MALE", 6.1)), LUCAS(new PersonConfiguration("Lucas", "MALE", 5.9)); private PersonConfiguration conf; ...

And, in news from South Africa: Man beaten for raping a goat. - what's newsworthy, though, is that this is not the first time, and, what's more, now that the goat is his wife, it needs to be replaced.

Humans are weird.
Just found a virtual box image. Its now searching for windows updates. Last search: Oktober 2013 :-(
@Heslacher What's on it, XP?
12:33
Win 7 64bit
I have only 2 boxes running XP. They are still doing a good job
Finding updates for that shouldn't take too long then
@Mast Yeah, I saw that this morning. .

So much wrong with that code.

@rolfl it's a strange world.
I would put this kind of question to codereview.stackexchange.com — Dániel Nagy 35 secs ago

@Zak "The poor will suffer if I don't cut tax credits!"
Yes, and these puppies. All of them will suffer unless I kick them in the face. Like this punts puppy off houses of parliament
Also, I have no idea how you haven't heard of it. Isnt' a default sub?
@ARedHerring Not everyone wastes their time on Reddit.

I'm usually way too busy wasting my time on SE instead.

@Mast That's true, however, the way Zak replied made me feel he had his life enriched by Reddit's presence.

Never been on Reddit in my life except for random Google searches leading me there.

@ARedHerring Not directly. Anecdotally, I have been informed several times to avoid them like the plague
@Zak Have another anecdote. Avoid them.
