why does that tag exist?
nm, looks like it was synonymized with
Monking
@Snowhawk04 is the name of the STandard Library in C++. Although it's usually inferred with std afaik.
I know, but there is no other use for outside of . It's just a core language feature.
Monking
Nope, means Standard Template Library, which is only a part of the C++ standard library, the one proposed for standardization by Alexander Stepanov.
STL is iterators, containers, algorithms & function objects if I recall correctly.
but hey, i'm also in that boat that anything tagged as should be and if you dont have access to the current standard, you dialect tag it with , etc
I think it started as an answer to . It basically states "When possible, keep it in the STL". Eliminates secondary libraries.
@Snowhawk04 No!
That will break legacy!
I'm for having separate and tags. I look for general or specific C++ questions here on a daily basis.
Weren't those tags meant when specific features of those standards were used?
Much of the code I write now will still compile in 10yo compilers.
The timestamp doesn't indicate features used.
Much of the code I write doesn't compile with last year's compilers ._____.
07:15
I've always considered the tags to represent the dialect, but then again, i've never tried to look for tags
@Morwenn Your code is probably better than mine. Everything I wrote in C++ the past 3 years was either experimental or hobby. I'm not up to date with the latest standard, neither is my compiler (max C++11).
Although I want to try my hand on lambdas in C++, so I probably need to upgrade soon.
@Mast Much of what I write is also experimental. I never have serious projects, I only land a hand to other people's projects from time to time.
I'd love a job where I could keep my knowledge about standards up to date as part of my job description.
I'm currently writing in languages I know nothing about without the time to learn them properly.
Which is bad.
I don't mind learning something new, just give me the time to learn it. I had such an assignment earlier, forced me to learn Python and follow the standards.
Best job ever, although only for half a year.
Concerning Python and C++, I more or less following the development process, so I more or less know what exists and sometimes read articles about how to use the new features.
Some articles transcend mere language/library knowledge and propose simple but interesting idioms. I think that those are the ones I prefer :)
With Python that's simple. I learned 2.6.4 and stuck with it.
But I should really keep up my C++.
07:24
I don't know whether it's possible to keep up with C++ without having at least some toy projects.

You ought to try Python 3.4 then :D
Perhaps not. I think it's a good idea to have one modern and one legacy language you're good with.
But that's personal preference.
Some keep FORTRAN as their dinosaur language...
Generally speaking, the most "legacy" Python that's often used is Python 2.7. But many things were backported to it, so it's still a modern legacy language.
I mainly use Python as a scripting language or to build test cases with.
Probably not the way it should, but hey, for somebody who never learned to unit-test...

I tend to forget that I'm among the few who develop graphical applications with Python .____.
Python is often used C++ library writers as a generation tool.
Python can generate everything, even antigravity.
VHDL does not have a sin or cos function. So with the latest FFT I build I had to write LookUp Tables in which the values where stored. Ofcourse I'm not going to write those by hand, so I wrote a generator in Python for it.
One of the ugliest things I ever wrote, but it worked.
For some values of worked.

It is a very uncomfortable place to be as a moderator.
It seems like @Donald.McLean's answers might be the ones that stand out the most, compared to the others.

11:50
I don't think I want to know "the right answers" until the election is over.
@Mast Remind me after the elections to post my answers.
There's nothing "privileged" about the process.... it is even public knowledge, and policy.
disassociation / DMCA is the only two options I see
disassoc doesn't help with the code-spread though, so DMCA seems to be the best course of action..
@SimonAndréForsberg I've downvoted him. I've never seen a singe thing he did (I'm not saying he doesn't answer questions and stuff).
right, I forgot to write disassociation in my answer to the meta. Although if it's confidential code, I think that's an unlikely option to be chosen.

@SimonAndréForsberg Watch out with DST though, I think it's GMT +2 during DST.
@Mast Yup, which makes Portugal a GMT+01:00 zone this time of the year
Now, a question that has nothing to do with this: why no one talks in UTC offsets?
I either talk in GMT or in Zulu
@IsmaelMiguel UTC has no offsets... it's just UTC.
GMT is acceptable
@rolfl I think he means timezones like UTC+6
11:56
@rolfl But there's PEST, PST, CET, CEST, other weird timezones

but yeah, utc offsets are easier
11:57
@Vogel612 Pacific Eastern Standard Time?
Something like that.
It's just a bloat of confusion
UTC/GMT is easier
Yeah, it is longer to say GMT+01:00 than CET(?)

Question: why no one uses SirPython's bot?
(I don't use because I don't have anything worthy to share)
@IsmaelMiguel It's new and not yet finished. Also, I think it's located in a different room than this.
@Mast It is, but the integration here would be painless and take only 5 seconds
@IsmaelMiguel Mods have to give their opinion before a bot is allowed in here
Something like that, right, @rolfl?
Well, I've left an option for SirPython to allow moderators to control the bot.
I would like to see more use on the bot
@IsmaelMiguel What's your role in this bot?
12:09
@Mast Borrowed and developed more than half of it
@Quill It's not an official policy, but effectively, yes
I think I can summarize it as:
1. all bots in this room need to be tools, not toys
2. any bot can be evicted/suspended if it misbehaves or becomes a problem
3. highly, highly recommend you test/introduce your bot in a separate room and inform the mods before you let it loose in this one.
Additionally, this is all at the discretion of the mods, who respond to the sentiment of the community.
I think that point 1 and 2 are covered, point 3 is being covered.
But, currently, no decision can be made (due to the elections)
in other words, something useful, and not distracting, and well-introduced and not a pain, will be welcome.
@rolfl Have you tried the bot?
Adding features to existing bot would be preferable than adding a new bot, I must admit.
@IsmaelMiguel I ran Duga itself on my home computer for a bout a week, is that what you mean?
12:16
@IsmaelMiguel Are anti-spam measures in place?
@Mast Nothing more than the regular chat restrictions.
