I don't use var in my personal projects, but I'm using it in RD because the rest of the project does.
var is love. var is life.
While true that var came along with LINQ and anonymous types, that last paragraph is your own opinion, which I respectfully but strongly and utterly disagree with. +1 for the whole rest of the answer though. — Mat's Mug 6 secs ago

You work in a place where they can fire users?! Where is that, me wants!!! More seriously, using var or not is a matter of personal preference. What matters is consistency in style - not following the rest of the team's style could possibly be a motive for losing one's position. But using var isn't poor programming practice - that comment is outright insulting and pretty much asking to be flagged as offensive (which I won't do, only because I find firing users too funny). — Mat's Mug 7 secs ago
@Mat'sMug you're fighting the good fight

when an item is selected from the dropdown, it gets confused and doesn't display anything
04:38
Are your bindings two-way?
hmm
isn't that the default?
You have to go two-way on the selected item binding.
Not as far as I know, I believe one-way is.
Hmm, maybe two-way is.
how would it know to use the SearchItem.IdentifierName?
Does your converter pass the right value back/forth?
converter is just to get the image
04:40
OK.
So you are binding to SearchItem?
So do Text="{Binding SearchItem, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}", DisplayMemberPath="IdentiferName"
That binds to search item and displays the value in .IdentifierName.
I've done this before... but it's been 2 years!
How long have you been working on RD?
6 months or so
and this is the only XAML in it
so far
Yeah, I know.
because there's no way I could have made that dropdown in WinForms
04:43
You said before you wanted to use Windows Forms to keep the UI the same.
Yeah.
So, did that work?
hold on
if Text binds to SearchItem, how do I know what to search then?
Well, that was just a guess.
Is Text what you were talking about?
How do you know what to search the other way?
In fact, I think WPF has a control just for this.
It is a textbox that displays suggestions as you type.
I don't remember the name off hand, but I was looking at it when I implemented search for my app.
that can't possibly be built into the framework. you sure you didn't download it from CodelPlex or something?
I'm sure.
Oh, I remember.
It was a Windows Phone control - the AutoSuggestBox.
Normal WPF doesn't have it (yet)
ugh. I'm getting the type name in the text
it's a stupidity
04:55
Sorry, have to go to bed.
Anyway, I wouldn't be much help at this time of night :(
'night!
Oh, and RaiseEvent Foo(var1, var2) calls seem to mess the selection thing up a bit - it doesn't work quite the same as a Foo var1, var2 call.
Will work on it tomorrow.
05:07
TextSearch.TextPath is what I needed
Great.
and this is why there's no such control in vanilla WPF - it's not needed
one just needs to remember how to set up the frakkin combobox ;)

I am not sure if this question is on topic for SO. Debugging and how to achieve questions are but I think optimization related questions are a better fit for Code Review SE site. Having said that, I would suggest a few things (1) using some library like prefix free (which is pretty small) would help keep the code minimal and also provide backward compatibility (2) consider nesting the selectors to avoid repetition of selector strings (3) have some default values for the parametric mixins. — Harry 17 secs ago
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it seems to be better fit for Code Review.SE. — Harry 26 secs ago

@h.j.k. meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/revisions/5357/2 I'm not sure what you're thinking with this edit...
Well, Monking Captain obvious
Actually, @nhgrif - h.j.k. has a point there.
the close reasons are the opposites of that list.
The list is:
your code works as intended
it is your code (real code)
the question must have the right presentation (include the actual code).
The close reasons are:
Oh wait, I get it.
yup ... ;-)
I guess I'll roll back to his edit for now then (though that still reads slightly confusingly to me... but it's certainly more correct than what I had)
I understand why there are mechanics in place against serial down voting... but...
last night I came across a post by a guy, the answer was effectively:
> Have you ever thought about trying ctrl+C, ctrl+V?
Then later I came across a second post of his in which he put a Let-Me-Google-That-For-You link behind one of those link shorteners.
So I was curious how he had anything more than 1 rep...
Haha... so now I have a great analogy to explain to people why not to use a while loop to wait on a background thread...
> The problem is that you still have a thread tied up in an wasteful exercise constantly polling to see if isDeviceConnected is true yet. It's the programmatic equivalent of a child in the back seat of a car constantly asking "are we there yet?"
10:54
@nhgrif You could post the user's name here so we can all decide for ourselves. This might do damage to his reputation.
But, since I'm fairly sure such action is frowned upon, I'm in no way recommending such action.

@JeroenVannevel clever .... erm....
If you pass it as an Integer, you'll remove the value that's equal.
if you pass it an int, it will remove the value at that index.,
THat's the way it should be.
Yes, that's one of the solutions. But it's so incredibly ugly that this should be necessary
The side effect of autoboxing.
the ambiguity is not there otherwise.
If I have a method called remove() and it removes the object in one scenario, then it should do that in every usecase
For completeness' sake, here are some solutions I tested: gist.github.com/Vannevelj/d05b2786333cca0797c5
I had this scenario at my tutoring session last night. Now I'll have to give some ugly workaround to someone who has trouble defining a method
11:13
If you want to know.....
I don't run in to that problem.
I never have a List of Integer..... I mean, who would ever do that?
That's why there is int[].
It's curious because I also never had that
The situation was that every account (in a facebook-like scenario) should have a list of PostIDs which resembles posts that the account liked
so you needed an ArrayList (or HashSet)
Why a list, why not int[] ?
int isn't an object... (Or maybe it is in Java)
Why would I constantly resize the array?
@nhgrif In Java, int is a primitive, not an object, but, the language allows it to be auto-cast to an Integer if the context allows it (and visa versa).
11:15
@nhgrif It's not, but it can be automatically boxed to an Integer which is an object. And collections only work with objects
Why don't you just have a list of Posts?
Assignment constraints, we're doing one of the exams of previous years
and in C#, there is no idea of primitives. int is just a typedef for the Integer object
ehhh
int is the alias of the Int32 struct
@JeroenVannevel FYI, if you want an API Snafu in Java........ there's a much better one.
11:20
@rolfl What do you have in mind?
And the real problem is that Java doesn't have named parameters.
remove(atIndex: foo) or remove(object: bar)
@JeroenVannevel I'm not sure I should tell you, you'll laugh at Java.
@rolfl That doesn't sound like me
newInstance()
Creates a new instance of the factory in exactly the same manner as the newFactory() method.
Check out the newInstance method.... ;-)
now, ask yourself, why does the API have two methods, where one does: exactly the same manner as the newFactory() method ....?
The story there is ..... ugly.
@Override @Deprecated @Backasswards-compatible
??
11:24
notice that all versions of newInstance and newFactory both return XMLInputFactory, right?
They.. Just renamed it from "instance" to "factory"?
Is that really the kind of change you want to break backwards compatibility for..
Now, go to the opposite factory..... the OutputFactory.... ;-) docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/api/javax/xml/stream/…
Now, look at the 4 methods there..... newInstance, and newFactory......
Spot the error..... ;-)
LOL
How is this even possible

That return type has been incorrect since Java 6 and possibly prior to that
Well you can't blame me for laughing with this one
It's just.. Are these things not tested?
One line of code where it's used would discover the problem
11:28
That whole API was "donated" to Java by BEA as part of an XML-to-Java serialization library called StAX.
including the test cases, and so on.
the Java folk did a shit-poor job of validating it.
Never let the company that wrote the code also be the company in charge of quality assurance of said code.
in fairness, the method is for a "custom" implementation of the library for which at the time there was only one reference implementation
wow...
On the other hand, the code as a whole is crap code.
The library has a shocking API and is possibly the most embarassing part of the entire Java native library.

I just think it is very messy and could probably be refactored, but I'm not sure where to start. I have put the files up on Git...

Q: Calculate Nth number in supertable of two numbers {C++} in better way than O(n)

pola sai ramTwo tables of numbers aand b are written and merged together in ascending order and duplicates are removed. Now the question is to find \$n\$th number in this supertable better than \$O(n)\$ complexity. here is my implementation , but it is \$O(n)\$ , can anyone suggest better complexity algorit...

@CaptainObvious. Wow. Removed almost immediately.

Q: Am I scanning my contacts right?

ZilWe are in an iOS app, in Objective-C. I have three types of objects involved here, Contacts, Users & Friendships. I have a problem where sometimes the same contact name appears X times in a tableview, but behind each identical contact is actually the correct contact. It's just a "display issue"...

Code Review is for code that works as intended. Code Review is not for "here's a bunch of code--where's my bug?" — nhgrif 1 min ago
that's one way to put it... ;-)
having a nice day @nhgrif?

Well it works as intended. 99.9% of the time. I only have one user who has one double contact for no obvious reason and I was hoping it was on my side of the equation — Zil 1 min ago

Q: Refactoring data processing method into classes

roryapI'm building an application that processes email messages in a mailbox, and, for each message, transforms the attachments and then replies to the sender. This application implements an existing framework that deals with the heavy lifting of mail protocols, connections, etc. Basically, the fra...

Sure.

@Mat'sMug Did pushing work OK? I had to deal with merge conflicts once or twice before, but I did go and cherry-pick through them
haven't merged back into next yet... I'm sure I'll have more conflicts then '-'
this can't be a good sign right?
> SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 11.0" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "There is insufficient memory available in the buffer pool.".
I need a bigger pool
or there's something I'm doing wrong. vewy wrong
@Mat'sMug to revert a merge you have to git reset --hard
But, in VS, when there's a merge conflict, you can click the Merge button and it will bring up a window with a diff.
Each conflict has checkboxes where you can select original, new, or both.
@RubberDuck THAT is the part I missed... keinen checkboxes :(
0/ all :)

Yo
aw @Phrancis, you changed your name back to normal. :(

@RubberDuck a bit late, but I really liked your blog post explaining all the SQL differences a while back.
@DJanssens That actually wasn't me. It was just a "reblog" that I thought was cool.
But thanks. I liked that one too.
Your first question is probably better suited for [Code Review] (codereview.stackexchange.com) as it appears to be working code. — Christopher Pearson 16 secs ago

Q: Inserting row into named range code

Meringue90I am writing a macro for an inventory management document. The point of the User Form is to allow the user to add a new item to each of 5 sheets (Daily Sales, Total Inventory, Deliveries, Income Statement, Profits), directly into a dynamic named range. The user provides Item Name, category (Coo...

Q: Overriding methods for members of an Enum

DerekI am managing the changing of views in an Android app using this enum and associated methods. I am particularly interested in the Page enum's use of overriding previous() and next() for the first and last elements. Is this readable? Is this idiomatic? Is there a preferable data structure? Are t...

I don't think we need all of the copy-pasta code. And I would advise against posting another question until this one is reviewed, too; odds are concepts will be applicable to all sections of the code. — Mat's Mug 48 secs ago
man, this module is probably a few lines short of popping a "module too long" compile error.
16:01
Lol, never heard of those.
This user still needs some help with titles.
a VB6/VBA module will refuse to compile beyond 65536 lines
Oh, OK.
Lol, who found that limit?
Oh, it's documented.
16:11
@EthanBierlein I get 100% packet loss when sending such large files to CR
I'd like to write a set of unit tests to check the reorder parameters thing, but I have about -1 ideas about where to start.
How about first? =;)-
you need to decouple the presenter from the VBE and ANTLR
i.e. extract functionality into classes, wrap 'em up with an abstraction, inject the abstraction
Ouch.
That can be a feature for 1.5 ;)
Anyway, sure.
and this is why unit tests for the rename presenter are commented-out ;-)
16:15
Maybe that could help set up the interface for the refactorings as a whole that you mentioned a while ago?
So they can all derived from IRefactoring
If I get a single vote on my latest question, I get a badge and bumped to 7.3k.
16:26
@Hosch250 it would be a step toward that and actual DI, yes :)
@Duga Look at those code dump answers flow!

I suppose that means the code doesn't even work properly.

Q: Looping for making use of the size of a file sent from the server to Control the receving of file contents (in client-server application)

MuniraIn my client server application, client sends some commands and the server gives the results back. Now my special concern is about the looping for downloading file from the server class, that is downloaded by using the GET filename command. My question: In my ClientSide there is a while loop ...

@CaptainObvious Darn what an awful title
Oh god... why did I think it was a good idea to log all my apps errors to a database?
This one user must have clicked the same button 100 times rather than re-start the program.
@RubberDuck How big did it get? ^^
~300 in the last 2 weeks.
Lol
16:43
That's about one per user.
Just remove duplicate items.
You could, ofc, sanitize the data.
But seriously, this one guy is half of them.
Items with duplicate error messages, I mean.
Maybe he wrote a JS clicker.
Like, reject any issues coming in if a user has already sent 10 of them last week.
What exactly do we need to do to cause such an error?
I can spare a few computers to click, ehm, test your issues.
16:45
DELETE FROM ErrorLogs WHERE User = 'this one guy'; GO -- Bye!
5
@Phrancis It has a critical severity if one forgets to input something?
Like I said, remove all values with duplicate errors.
It almost does look like he had a JS clicker going.
@RubberDuck Hey, you could calculate the average clicking speed of that user by using the LoggedAt data!
It looks to be somewhere between 1 & 3 seconds.
The best part?
Not.
One.
Ticket.
