@nhgrif To be honest, I think he has some great answers. I don't like his style and many of his comments though.
But as long as he posts great answers, he's kind of a good user to have around most SE sites.
@nhgrif It shouldn't have been answered, indeed.
However, the meta is to give answers and get points. Not to determine if it's on topic or not.
@LeeYi Stack Exchange is not a network of forums, so I hope you weren't referring to Code Review (and by the way, this question looks like it'd probably be off-topic on Code Review...) — nhgrif 43 secs ago
@LeeYi This is either broken code, hypothetical code, or unclear what the OP is asking. Perhaps all three. Either way, I - as a CR regular - don't think this belongs at Code Review — Simon André Forsberg 15 secs ago
^ CR regular flood in action
@Mast that's kinda the wrong way to go about it...
@Vogel612 I don't say I agree with the meta, it's just what I see most users doing.
If a user is being toxic then it doesn't matter how high quality their answers are. If they can't state things respectfully they should be warned / suspended
You know what would be great? It'd be great if Stack Overflow users could just stick to picking Stack Overflow close reasons and just closing questions on Stack Overflow as being questions they don't want to see on Stack Overflow.
11:05
And then the internet in all of The Netherlands went down for a few minutes...
AMS-IX was having issues
wut?
@Duga two comments stated that the question is unclear, one comment stated that the OP tried to accomplish a specific task, and then there's a comment stating that he might be looking for a review? What?
I think I'd kind of like to just not see migration recommendations at all from Stack Overflow.
@skiwi Didn't have trouble here, but I've seen the news, yea
@SimonAndréForsberg did you VTC as unclear?
11:06
@nhgrif Easy way to accomplish that, ignore @Duga ;)
@Vogel612 I agree, but I've seen a similar discussion on electronics.stackexchange
@nhgrif oh yes.
So... somehow, you and I are the only close-voters on that question...
@Vogel612 One of the highest posters there has a tendency to be rude. Very.
Which is more my point...
I'll still see the migration comments. I have more rep on SO than on CR...
11:07
My vote for NAA on stackoverflow.com/a/21048059/1014587 was declined. Bastards...
Whenever I read a question twice, understand the context but still don't understand what the question is about, I VTC as unclear.
I just think that SO shouldn't be making migration comments at all.
They clearly don't understand the scope of other sites in the network (nor do they appear to care to)
At the end of the day, all they want is to close questions
@nhgrif I threw an Unclear on that last C# question.
@Mast wtf... self-answered, accepted and -5....
@Mast looks like an answer to me. bad answer perhaps, but still an answer.
11:08
@SimonAndréForsberg compare that to chills answer and you'll see why..
@SimonAndréForsberg Except it doesn't work, not the way he thinks.
also that bold text at the bottom....
@chillworld You know more about Zk right?
yes, why @Mast
What do you think?
11:11
I know, I also flagged that once
perhaps it's an issue of having answered the wrong question? It has happened before...

jwwIt just happened to me. Here is what I did and how I solved it. First create your icon set: 29x29.png, 58x58.png, 72x72.png, etc. Second, add soft links (ln -s) per App Icons on iPad and iPhone. Third, add all *.PNG files to the project rather than just the linked PNGs (Icon.png, Icon-Small.png ...

@nhgrif will love that one ^^

Does anyone know how I can make a super basic website run a script on every page?
@SimonAndréForsberg I don't like that guy...
@Mast look at the revisions of the question
NAA and "wrong" aren't the same thing.

11:12
Reflagged it for VLQ, perhaps I should've done that the first time.
@Mast - you have to know when to let things go.
2
@rolfl codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/90592/… Neither I nor @Mast can get this to compile.
@rolfl Feel free to ask me to stop. I have a tendency to want to understand by asking and stating. If that bothers you I'll put an end to it, no problem.
Both instances of source->name should be source.name according to my IDE.
@Mast I'm talking about that NAA/VLQ on the nearly 2-year-old post on SO.

11:14
Does anyone know how my html + php webpage can load a script on each page? I don't want to add it to the header on every page, that would be annoying
@AlexClark add an include in your PHP script for every page. Or use one PHP script that generates all the pages.
@rolfl Yea, so was I. I want to learn the rules and I'm not good at it.
Really, Simon?
user147690
@SimonAndréForsberg I don't know what that means unfortunately
@Alex - dumping off-topic questions in a chat room is called being a help vampire, and is higly frowned upon here

user147690
11:18
@rolfl Hmmm sorry. I assumed it was fine since I spend all my time on Math stack exchange(where it is really normal)

Q: The Help Vampire problem

Barry KellyWhat is Stack Overflow's long-term solution for the Help Vampire problem? Quote from article follows: Identifying Help Vampires can be tricky, because they look like any ordinary person (or Internet user, whichever is lesser). But by closely observing an individual's behavior using this hand...

On Math Stack Exchange, people show up and say "Hey, I don't know how to do long division. Can someone help me with that?"
2
user147690
@rolfl I have read this.
I'm not certain whether that's a fair comparison or not, necessarily... but someone probably understands the point I'm trying to make.
@AlexClark So, having read that, you go to a room where the topic is "general discussion about Code Review", and think it's OK to ask: how do I solve my technical problems about something else.
user147690
11:20
@rolfl Honestly I am not that tech savie, this seems like a code problem
I agree, it is a code problem, and this chat room is not about code problems.
it is about Code Review.
user147690
So optimization of code?
@AlexClark 'This code works. Can it be made faster?'
That stuff
@Mast - probably best not to engage
11:22
@rolfl Ah, time for coffee
user147690
Which is the relevant chat page?
user147690
Webmasters?
@Alex - if you want to discuss the stacke exchange site, and other things related to the Code Review then you're in the right place. If you have working code you have posted there, and want to discuss your question, then you're int he right place. If you are looking to find someone to do this all for you, or teach you, then there are probably a lot of people here who could do that too, but, the rules are that you are not allowed to just come in and ask.
@AlexClark I have given you something to google, that's really all I will help you with.
This is not a room for being the help-desk for too-lazy-to-research people think it is easier to spam a place to see if they get a hit.
5
If we allow that, then we will get flooded, and this place will become unmanagable.
As a result, as a site moderator, it is my duty to ensure that folk that do the above are severely realigned with how things should be
user147690
11:26
@rolfl You seem overly aggressive. I have researched prior, and I got advice from Simon that I am following up. Furthermore you have spent more effort expelling me than it would have taken to give me advice...

Q: Drawing with canvas in python

unacreaturaIs there a function or some easier way to draw this, each of this little circles should have 8 other smaller circles around it like the big circle... So far i made big circle in center with 8 smaller circles using canvas from Tkinter import * canvas = Canvas(width=700, height=700, bg='black') ...

@AlexClark But that effort was only spent once.
@AlexClark I am apparently not aggressive enough about it.
2
user147690
@rolfl How so?
user147690
@rolfl I got it with the first message, after that I was just responding...
11:28
To be clear, you are spamming and trolling, and generally wasting good people's time, and you seem to think that's OK.
user147690
@rolfl You are delusional...
Left or kicked?
Trying to deciude whether suspend or not.
Kicked is only 1 minute though
I can't imagine he'll come back.
... or maybe he will...
But if he does and still hasn't got the hint, then suspension seems an easy decision.
Yeah, my experience is that chat rooms, if kept on scope, maintain a good balance of community and attract high-value participation from the site members.
11:33
Intern starts this morning. Apparently, he works 8:30-5:00... even though... no one else works until 5:00... so I'm coming in late and staying late this morning.
If you let that collection of experts become a target of pestering, then the experts will just go somewhere else, and everyone loses.
Hang on, I have a plan.....
Hmm... no, that won't work well.
@rolfl I'd say point, made...
could we now all get along?
Sure
it always makes me a little queasy if things like this happen...
Are we going to close that c++ question now?
11:36
I can't verify the claims about the non-compiling, and seeing that it's definitely a controversial question...
wat...
@nhgrif Quick! Rollback!
@nhgrif The one that XCode does not compile?
Although closing the question is probably better. It's link-only.
11:42
@Mast said he couldn't compile either.

Q: Rule Of Three for a Coordinate class

xXAnointedXxI just recently got back into C++ and did a quick and simple exercise in the Rule of Three. The code for the copy constructor, overloaded assignment operator, and destructor follows below for my class (code is also below), and I was wondering if someone could take a quick look at it and point out...

Sorry, @Mast - but comparing my C++ experience against Loki, 200_success, Corbin and Richard Powel (new user, no idea of his credentials, but his answer looks sane).... I have to disagree.
@nhgrif too... I am not going to go by the XCode's version of 'right' in this case.
200 has already had one kick at this can with the reject-migration. If he's OK with the revised version, then I'm good with it too.
@rolfl @nhgrif Asked me if it compiled. In current form, it does not on my machine. That's pretty much all I stated I think.
Okay, @Mast is it just the std:: missing that yours complains about?
temporary.cpp:6:9: error: ‘string’ does not name a type
string *name;
Add using namespace std; or put std:: in front of all of the strings.
@rolfl Xcode uses GNU++11
The part that concerns me, is that while those users did post answers
None of them actually commented on the part which is broken.
So no existing answer comments on the broken part yet
(Those trusted users also didn't comment explaining why my comment about it not compiling is wrong)
11:49
Only you think it is broken ;-)
No one has actually confirmed that it actually does work
Hmmm, perhaps my compiler is broken
error: ‘string’ in namespace ‘std’ does not name a type
std::string *name;
#include <string>
Or any other #include which ends up including <string>
And @rolfl for clarity, while Xcode is primarily used for Objective-C and Swift, there's nothing wrong with Xcode as a C++ or C IDE. It'd be the equivalent of using Visual Studio as a C or C++ IDE (except, Xcode's C++ isn't "Visual" C++... it's the same C++ you'd get anywhere else...)
@nhgrif Doesn't matter. If it's a typo, allright, people make typos. But this is worse than a typo imho.
Well, he didn't include a couple lines from the top of his file which can easily be inferred:
#include <string>
using namespace std;
I'm okay inferring those for the sake of reviewing his code.
But I can't infer source->name to source.name, I'm not okay with that. Those two things are different.
I'm growing more confident that the -> is wrong.
-> operator is the equivalent of (*source).name
11:54
solarium:~/xxx> g++ temp.cpp
temp.cpp: In copy constructor ‘Coordinate::Coordinate(const Coordinate&)’:
temp.cpp:25:43: error: base operand of ‘->’ has non-pointer type ‘const Coordinate’
             this->name=new string(*(source->name));
                                           ^
temp.cpp: In member function ‘Coordinate& Coordinate::operator=(const Coordinate&)’:
temp.cpp:39:32: error: base operand of ‘->’ has non-pointer type ‘const Coordinate’
             this->name=*(source->name);
meh.
Right.
So it doesn't compile for you either.
And @rolfl three of the four answers were posted after my comment speculating that it's broken...
@LokiAstari - got any comment about the above? -> Basically this code does not compile (or does it...?): codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/90592/…
The -> operator is used in place of (*source).name basically because the -> looks nicer.
But source isn't a pointer, so it doesn't need to be dereferenced.

> The var keyword can also be useful when the specific type of the variable is tedious to type on the keyboard, or is obvious, or does not add to the readability of the code.
Is it implicit over explicit in C#?
Well, the Zen of Python states
12:25
> Explicit is better than implicit.
> I've got my full program working as expected.
Does C# follow the inverse of that?
> Here is the relevant piece of code which works as expected:
Implicit is better than explicit when the context is obvious. Explicit is better than implicit when the context is not obvious.
@Mast The compiler implicitly determines the explicit type of the variable.
The variable's type is explicit, but implicitly inferred because the context makes it obvious enough already.
12:27
@JeroenVannevel There's a difference? As a writer, can you expect your audience to completely understand the context?
bool isOver18 = true;
Do you understand the context?
Yes you do.
@JeroenVannevel Yea
It's only rarely when you will want to explicitly name your variable types
Allright, so C# allows this out of laziness? I mean, what's the harm in typing it out again? Especially since I've seen some quite obscure names passing.
Having a proper object structure helps a lot
Why do you want to perform finger practice?
12:29
@Mast Programming languages are like driving cars.
Why would you want to type it all out if it's already obvious from the context?
It is all about expecting the expected.
People in different countries have wildly different rules, and customs from each other.
hell, some even drive on the other side of the road.
You might as well go to Java if you feel like writing Dictionary<HashMap<int, List<string>>> rather than var
in each place, drivers seem to cope just fine.
@JeroenVannevel If the naming is done properly, sure, the context should be obvious.
12:30
I was in Addis Ababa once.... hell, every intersection had traffic lights which everyone complely ignored to the point they were turned off.
Still, since people knew what to expect there, it was perfectly fine.
@JeroenVannevel But if anyone decides to build a factory of factories, it's hard to keep track of in which layer you are. Double checking doesn't hurt there.
it's only ever a problem if your expectations are different.
So, in C#, you expect the compiler to infer the type, and you expect the programmer to expect that, and, just because you don't expect that does not mean that it's wrong.
@rolfl I've heard stories about such situations. Nobody expects anyone to follow the lights so people watch out quite good.
@Mast Your code is still strongly typed and all you have to do when you're unsure is hover over the field with your mouse
And still: if it isn't obvious, you just type it out in full
that's as easy as it is
If you make a factory of factories that make factories, you can always change the var then
12:32
@JeroenVannevel Ah, we're expecting IDE behaviour to complement the code. That does help yea.
frankly I expect variable and method naming to take care of all this
var factoryOfFactories = FactoryService.GetFactory<AbstractFactory>();
The variable's name already tells me I'll be dealing with two levels of factories
@rolfl Wow.
If you feel the need to explicitly name your var then chances are you have a bad architecture that needs fixing instead
@JeroenVannevel That, or inexperience with C# ofcourse. But I get your point.
I even start to agree.
@JeroenVannevel s/name/type/ ....
12:35
@rolfl naming the type
Perhaps I should try C# again, many of my misconceptions about it are disappearing.
It's a different style. Changing styles every once in a while keeps one awake.
12:52

wonder if I could use all you guys as references for a Job? how do you think an employer would look at that? I suppose if I had the pertinent information (phone number, location, real name) they wouldn't know until they asked "How do you know Lyle?"
@Lyle'sMug you should definitely be able to use your participation here as a reference
the question is... is it advisable?
because that employer might think: "This guy wastes my money on surfing through the web and getting internet points"
I can really say that I have a good board of advisers, Scala, Java, SQL, VBA, VB.NET, C#.NET, iOS, etc. one way or another I think it would be good to acknowledge that I know all you guys and that you would be willing to help me with whatever.
@Vogel612 I see your point there.
but the knowledge level that I have attained is public on this site, right?
well... "knowledge level"
you got an impressive number of internet points.
the drive to attain more information, and to make my code more standard, and easily read
not as impressive as @rolfl and @200_success and @Mat'sMug, I am only ranked 13...which seems a little odd..lol

@JeroenVannevel Why is that? because you think that I might not be what I say I am?
just curious, I kind of agree with you.
the internet is anonymous, and real life.....isn't
Partly but mostly because in the end I wouldn't say we have a working relationship. Helping eachother with code snippets is still a different thing from working on a solid project together
If I'd be asked as a reference for most in the room I'd probably give positive recommendations but I don't really value my own opinion on it that high
@chillworld I'm blaming @Duga, she made me pay attention to the question!
@JeroenVannevel I see what you are saying, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I would more or less say that I have a group of people to help me "@RubberDuck" program if need be. a lot of people that have more experience than myself (at least that is what I am saying)

@JeroenVannevel I still need to learn more about Git Repositories, I don't quite know as much as I need to, to be able to use it's functionality to the fullest
Oh I wouldn't worry about that. I just commit straight to master, lol
Though as soon as I finish that feature, I'll try to start using pull requests
I think I do the same thing right now....lol

Q: Trying to make a resilient android serivce which uses thread to process

DexterMy service is started with an Intent which contains the task to be performed. The service is "actually started" the first time, and while it is running, subsequent calls simply pass on the intent to public int onStartCommand(Intent intent, int flags, int startId) {} The real processing need t...

here is one that I should get back into. it's like 4 year old code from when I was in school.

The project I work on has two testers. Thank goodness, I'm terrible at testing.
@Lyle'sMug you might want to start by cleaning parts of it up
65 public Card(string strCardLocation, string strCard, int intCardVal, int intDecks)
66         {
67             CardLocation = strCardLocation;
68             strCardName = strCard;
69             intValue = intCardVal;
70             intNumAvail = intDecks;
71         }
@Lyle'sMug ^^ is hard :)
@SimonAndréForsberg It looks like POI has been downgraded from a regular show to a mid-season replacement/fill-in.

Q: What code is more better

netwerI have the following code, where _myList is List<someObject>: int currentIndex = _myList.IndexOf(someObject); int[] indexArray = new int[2]; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(_myList[currentIndex - 1].Status)) { indexArray[0] = _myList[currentIndex - 1].someObjectID; } if (someObject.Field == @"str1...

@Donald.McLean wuuut!!! In practice, what will this mean?

@SimonAndréForsberg Gorgeous was telling me that they only ordered 13 episodes. And CBS just announced their fall schedule and it doesn't have a slot.
14:44
like I said @SimonAndréForsberg and @Phrancis it's old code from when I was still in school. I haven't touched it for quite some time.
should I call the interviewer, or should I wait for them to call me, it's a Skype Interview, never done one of these before
@Lyle'sMug they will call you
alright the wait begins. :)
oHHHHHH. Shiny.

Got a second for the C++ question again - this one:

Q: Rule Of Three for a Coordinate class

xXAnointedXxI just recently got back into C++ and did a quick and simple exercise in the Rule of Three. The code for the copy constructor, overloaded assignment operator, and destructor follows below for my class (code is also below), and I was wondering if someone could take a quick look at it and point out...

I need some education on C++, or perhaps the other comments got missed....

solarium:~/xxx> g++ temp.cpp
temp.cpp: In copy constructor ‘Coordinate::Coordinate(const Coordinate&)’:
temp.cpp:25:43: error: base operand of ‘->’ has non-pointer type ‘const Coordinate’
             this->name=new string(*(source->name));
                                           ^
temp.cpp: In member function ‘Coordinate& Coordinate::operator=(const Coordinate&)’:
temp.cpp:39:32: error: base operand of ‘->’ has non-pointer type ‘const Coordinate’
             this->name=*(source->name);
@rolfl as @nhgrif has said somewhere I think, use . for non-pointers.
IIRC, -> is a shortcut in C++ for dereferencing a pointer, and then typing .
such as a->b is (a*).b
Yeah, I know.... but I half-expect that there is a situation, flag, compiler, or something where it's allowed.
ah, you don't think the code really is that broken?

Q: Powershell script for running runspec tests during build

mitomedCompletely new to ps what I am trying to do is having a script I can run as a build step for my application that runs my acceptance tests using SpecRun (which I haven't used before neither). I came up with this function Run-Tests { param( [string]$Environment, [string]$tag ...

Q: Manager for customer billing and subscriptions in Rails

Ben NelsonI'm looking to get rid of a couple dependencies that I have a sneaking suspicion are present in the code that I'm writing. Right now I have a service class that manages my subscriptions for part of my application in Rails. The problem is that we have Recurly as our management platform right now b...

C++ has many standards, many compilers, and so on. each compiler and standard, and specific implementation has a fair amount of latitude on some things.
this may be one of them
that's all.... and, maybe it will be obvious to someone who uses it more.
(which is why none of the domain experts have commented on it).
Well, Emily L may be an expert ;-)
but XCode is too ... focused... to be a more general reference

Q: Print out pairs of page numbers to file

A WaouwaPretty simple script that prints out pairs of integers to a file. Intended usage is for copy pasting the values into a printer to print double sided pages that have two pages on each side, ie page1: front: 1,2 page1: back: 3,4 and so forth. So the first line would have all of the pages for th...

That's a good answer to a crap question... which was not really a zombie, but the answer is good regardless.
@rolfl That. Questions should either be closed or get an answer.
So all questions not deserving a closure need answers.
