@Phrancis Did you see revised code + my amending previous understanding?
In other news: Two men has been arrested for the recent triple-murder in my town.
@rolfl ^^
18:04
What does this even mean: Decomposition,locality, Modifiability and Procedural Abstraction
@SimonAndréForsberg Woah.
@Legato Huh?
@SimonAndréForsberg Nice, that should settle things.
@SimonAndréForsberg That's pretty scary. Is it a big town?
@SirPython 50 000 people. Not very.
18:05
@SimonAndréForsberg lol, thanks.
> (Which you can still do in this case, e.g. provideFriendship() for cat could specify "by curling around owner's leg").
'locality' 'procedural abstraction' what? I actually get the others.
@rolfl I hope so. I guess the whole thing has gotten people worried and more afraid than usual. I've read a bit about old people saying that they don't dare to go out when it's dark because "it can happen to anyone".
@Phrancis ?
@Legato I thought that sentence was awesome

Haha, I'm glad.

Ali ZafarI'm trying to do Project Euler Problem 12, which reads as: "The sequence of triangle numbers is generated by adding the natural numbers. Is there a way to see how many messages you've starred and/or which/how many of yours were starred?
Don't think so
Yes, sort of.
Whoops, that is to count starred posts per user.
Anyway, go count the stars on your page manually...
Make a program to do it for you!
@Legato Or, according to @JeroenVannevel, make someone else make a program to do it for you.
18:24
Haha, I'm so glad this was starred. xD

@Legato I actually saw your upvote on that
@Corbin old statistics. I really should do another run. (Hey btw, I think it's been a while since I've seen you around!)
@Hosch250 I wish I could see the whole thing. There's nothing that stands out as bad.
See what whole thing?

@SimonAndréForsberg The statistics likely haven't changed on mine :). I haven't been around much since I started a new job. I still like to creep from time to time though :D
@Corbin it's called "lurking".
Creeping FTW.
@Phrancis You saw it? I'm not sure what that means. xD

That actually reminds me, how do you guys post things that look like a tag?
19:17
@Legato I was wondering the same thing
@Legato I don't really see anything embarrassing there, no worries
but I'm shocked if you're writing Java without an IDE
@Legato @SirPython [tag:like-this]
I fail.
Magic!
@janos Yeah, all my programming is done in a text editor.
wow. but why?
why would you do that to yourself?
lol, why does everyone react like that?
Like I'm doing myself some massive injustice. xD
because maybe you do?
19:23
I think taking the time to really know what I'm using to import everything myself, and write it all down without helpers, auto-completion, and any refactoring left up to me has been helpful...at least I like to think so. I could be completely wrong. It's just that my Professor said that a lot of the students were too reliant on IDEs, could not code things for themselves/didn't understand what to do if the IDE didn't suggest something and/or if the IDE was wrong
Once I'm as good as you guys maybe I'll use one.
I really don't find it so difficult to just call javac and java
@Legato I have to say. The professor does have a point.
I've seen way too many programmers using wrong fix-suggestion in the IDE and other things. People guess too much.

Yeah, when he said that it really stuck with me. So I never really picked it up.
As long as you don't guess too much, you're fine with using an IDE.
I kind've like being able to program in notepad lol.
You guys are a lot further ahead. an IDE to you is just using a car instead of walking.
For me, I worry it could be like using training wheels when I'm trying to learn to ride a bike.
19:28
I think an IDE can speed up your learning process, by letting you focus on the things that matter, and work faster. On the other hand, you should know how to compile using the command line, and how to package your project as a jar
I use my IDE just to write code and run unit tests. I do everything else in a terminal
It's extremely annoying when a coworker doesn't know the most common Maven commands
@Legato training wheels are not necessarily a bad thing.
what's even more annoying is that it takes 4 seconds to google them :/
You're the one that decides when to use an IDE instead of Notepad.
to me an IDE gives wings, not training wheels
Yeah, I've done that, was really cool. I think I will pick up an IDE just for the tests, It's a really important part. I really can't get it to work on the command line anyway. :|
19:30
"how do I clean the project?" "... have you tried mvn clean?"
running tests on the command line is ideally a simple mvn test
@janos assuming it's a maven project :)
ideally it's a Maven project :)
i can't imagine java without maven or gradle
ideally it's a Gradle project :)
19:32
See, I have no clue what you're talking about. :)
ah, ok
if it's a Gradle project then we don't need this conversation in the first place because you're already a guru who knows well what he's doing
For the record: It would probably take a bit of time for me to package a JAR from a bunch of .java files. Especially if there's some dependencies on Log4j or stuff as well. I don't remember the exact commands. I believe though that I would be able to figure them out without using google, only by using --help
@Legato Whenever you feel ready to take the step towards Maven or Gradle, take it.
I don't think I've manually packaged a jar since Freshman year of college.... maven <3
@janos I think I still use Maven more often than Gradle though.
19:35
I don't really know what those are. I guess frameworks, not really something I'm at all familiar with.
Maven is a dependency management and building tool
@Legato Back, did you get it?
@Corbin I remember the "good old times" when I downloaded jars and added to my build path in Eclipse. I even managed to get a Hibernate project working that way! Shortly after that was when I first started using Maven ;)
you can configure in your project the external libraries it needs, and Maven will download them for you so you can build your project easily
@SimonAndréForsberg Hah, I can remember doing that too. It was miserable.
19:36
@SimonAndréForsberg jar cfm [name of file.jar] [manifest text file(tells it which is main class)] add your classes here. One positive about doing this from scratch is I know that by memory. xD
@Hosch250 I'm installing.
How long does it take?
It takes seconds on my computer.
When I first heart about Maven, I thought it was Continous-Integration combined with forced-open-source-we-host-the-code-for-you type of thing. God, I was so wrong.
with maven, packaging a jar is as simple as : mvn package
I'll let you know when it's done.
@janos That's op.
@Corbin It was even so miserable I had to post a question on Stack Overflow about it!

19:38
So you guys would say my learning this Maven thing should be high priority?
Is it something I can use without an IDE? or Just another reason I should be using one?
@SimonAndréForsberg hah, it's one of the few times that a "why aren't you just using X???" is completely the correct answer.
@Legato You can use it without an IDE.
@Legato It's definitely something you want to look into if you're getting into the realm of non-trivial programs or if your programs have dependencies.
it should actually make your IDE-less life easier
@Corbin oh hell yeah. Which is essentially the answer I arrived at myself:
I must say that Maven was a lot easier to setup and use than Hibernate was. Also, my picture about what Maven is turned out to be incorrect - now I know what it is and I love it. For everyone else who wants to get started with Maven and is using Eclipse, use the update site http://download.eclipse.org/technology/m2e/releases and you're done ! — Simon André Forsberg Feb 10 '13 at 12:33
19:40
Hah
@Hosch250 It installed. The install started when I said it was installing.
OK, how do you like it?
@Corbin oh yes... for trivial programs, it's quite easy to survive without Maven, but when you add Dependencies, ugh. Especially dependencies with dependencies...
Yeah. And mvn test is quite nice.
I can't imagine Spring without maven, personally. Sooo many jars.
Spring is another thing I see people talk about a lot...
19:44
Personally I'd avoid Spring until you're ready to make a pretty large jump.
And even then, Guice is probably better if you're just looking for DI and not other parts of the Spring stack.
(I haven't used Guice though... I just have a strong aversion to Spring from using it at work :p)
it's incredibly powerful and can be incredibly useful, but it can also make you want to smash your head against a wall until you can't see code anymore
here's a good next goal for you Legato: convert a simple Java project to a Maven project, that can be compiled using mvn compile, and tests executed with mvn test

@Corbin That is soo true. Configuring Spring is like a big huge PITA sometimes.

@Legato @janos and I focus on different things. I go for implementation of Stack, janos goes for Unit Testing and "cheating" (or in other words, finding a clever way of passing the challenge).
lol, when you put it that way. xD
@Legato see what @janos wrote before. Convert your project to a maven project. What that essentially means is that you should have the following directories: src/main/resources, src/main/java, src/test/java, src/test/resources, and the file pom.xml
20:11
