@Legato What do you think of this:
Don't those lines of text look awful long?
Did you post this earlier?
Yes.
and in that last paragraph, yes. I think a line break or two would aid readability.
Well, that isn't an option (well, sort of).
What I need to do is make the column smaller so the text.
I have a few ideas, maybe I could run them past you.
Feel free, I love to help.
It's not that bad, mind you, just horizontally outstanding when compared to the others.
00:08
One, I could just give the column a maximum width.
There would be a ton of blank space on the side that could maybe be monetized with ads.
Two, I could give the users a slider in the settings, and give the column a minimum width.
Three, I could do both - a maximum and minimum width with a slider.
Trouble is knowing the minimum width to give so it doesn't overflow any devices screens, but any width I would consider (200px, or so) should be well under any device in existence's screen.
Heck, even the old CRT screens had more pixels than that.
Four, I could set up columns for when the device is over a certain width.
Trouble with that is, I've not been able to find any automatic method of doing this, so I would have to manually adjust each and every page of content (pushing 100 at least) to work with two columns, and provide a way for it to spread back into one when the columns get too narrow.
is that CSS?
00:23
@DanPantry No, XAML.
XAML and C#.
Ah. I was going to suggest setting a min width of 320px and scaling up to break points to make it look better
but if it's a desktop app, then welp i have no clue
What it is, is I have a main page that shows the everything except that block of text/pictures.
It is a Windows Store app, not a desktop app.
by "desktop app" I meant "doesn't use CSS"
The text/pictures section is different for each item in the list, and is stored in individual pages.
And actually, I could use HTML/CSS/JS to write the app, but I don't know JS.
there's never a bad time to startl earning one of the fastest growing languages atm
though when harmony comes out it's going to look a lot different so YMMV
00:26
Except, I need to finish learning C#/.NET

@CaptainObvious GET ON MY LEVEL.

@JeroenVannevel I also made a blog post for the first time in 6 months, you reminded me I even had a blog.. v
@Legato a css preprocessor is a program that will turn a DSL of CSS into raw CSS, a bit like how you can get CoffeeScript which is transpiled into JavaScript.
My personal choice is Stylus; one of the great things about preprocessors is you save a lot of typing on them and you can have functions/expressions and all that programming goodness you can't have in CSS
example:

h1
  .some-class
    .another-class li
      &:hover
        color red
compiles into h1.some-class.another-class li:hover { color: red; }
but the benefit is that at each level of nesting you can have more than one statement, so..
h1
   color red
   span
      color blue
translates to h1 { color: red; } h1 span { color: blue; }
Neat.
Thank you @DanPantry I just started using CSS so I may try using it alone a bit more but that's definitely something I'll keep in mind and use in the future!
:)
dear lord wordpress is terrible for whitespacing

Welp, knowing bitwise operations is good.
var squareRoot: Int32 {
        get {
            var root: Int32
            var remainder: Int32
            var place: Int32

            root = 0
            remainder = self
            place = 0x40000000

            while place > remainder {
                place >>= 2
            }
            while place > 0 {
                if remainder >= root + place {
                    remainder -= (root + place)
                    root += (place << 1)
                }
                root >>= 1
That's super fast.

@Legato That was irresponsible

I wish, oh I wish, I went to school here: bing.com/…
University of California, Irvine (not Bing).
I'd go to class dressed in the US flag.
The President should send the military in as some light work after being in combat zone and march them all across the border.
Since when can a public U ban the flag?
I bet they won't hold a vote banning any other country's (or rogue nation's [I'm looking at you, ISIS]) flag.
And THAT is why I'm sick of the US - the citizens can't be called American's any more.

@MotokoKusanagi Thanks for the link, but since when can some *** ban the flag from being flown on government property?
Also, they don't mention young upstarts (or anyone) banning the flag and laws about that.
I may not agree with some of what the US Republic does, this is still America.
And THAT is why we fly the American flag!
The flag should never be taken down. If you don't like it, renounce your citizenship.
@rolfl What do you mean?
04:04
That's a lot of butthurt from both sides over a damn flag
There's a document for that. It takes a lot of loopholes, but it's possible.
@JeroenVannevel How'd you like it if some students voted to ban the Belgian flag at your U?
@MotokoKusanagi Exactly.
I couldn't care less because nobody here feels the need to show off our flag
@Legato You think it's a responsible thing to do to break a fibula, especially yours?
It's not intentional...
Well, apparently these people feel a need to suppress the flag.
And I don't approve.
A lot of people - several million, in fact - have died, been maimed, or more or less several wounded defending this flag, and some diversitists have banned it in promotion of diversity.
No national pride any more.
Legato.setTarget(Badge.SOCRATIC);
Anyway, I'd better get to bed - daylight savings starts tomorrow, so we're losing an hour.
@Legato I posted an updated picture above. Go ahead and ping me with your thoughts.
It's not about national pride, and it's not about diversity. It's about being so enamored with your own opinion that you think you should force it onto others.
@MotokoKusanagi Agreed.
@Hosch250 Will do.
04:15
I gotta admit this country is pretty great. Freedom is relative. This isn't the Congo. This isn't ISIS territory.

@Phrancis see my revised answer in your calculator question. Also, in your revision NUM_1 should be num1. That was due to my misunderstanding, apologies. UNDERSCORE_CAPITALS should be reserved for constants, which means a value that remains the same (is shared) by all instances of the class. So in your Calculator class, for example, that would be something like PI_VALUE = 3.14159; So essentially, only use it for values that you would instantiate right away, and are static & final.

hm, that's a nice answer to your question
I agree. this code is broken, and does not work. Additionally, the code is missing ';' at line-ends, comp is never assigned to, and other basic issues. — rolfl ♦ 2 mins ago
Christian makes a very good point about to be careful about enums. They are not good for extensible things. They are good for a fixed set of items that you don't expect to ever change.
Well, I don't see the way one does addition being something that changes. I could see using a map to be more extensible, but I quite like the way it is.

It's not something I can change on the fly, no, but I like how easy it is to add an operation and the way to use it. You've shown me the light @janos
I do often encounter a design dichotomy when chosing between enum and maps. Though I just find myself using an enum to populate a map to "fix" it.
Remember there's always EnumMap too....
@Legato for a related topic, check out this question by @skiwi with a coffee machine, where he resisted the temptation to use an enum for ingredients, and I completely agreed with his decision. Sometimes enum seems like an easy natural solution, but it's not a good one, as Skiwi correctly decided

Phonology, on the other hand, is concerned with the abstract, grammatical characterization of systems of sounds or signs. The field of phonetics is a multilayered subject of linguistics that...
Phone-ethics are even funnier.
