I haven't touched what you mention in your comment, but I strongly agree.
Something's not quite right. I don't like that you have a recursive and nonrecursive version of Glob... Yet I do because it hides some complexity that doesn't need to be seen publicly. Hmmm... I'll be back. Need to think on this one. — RubberDuck 1 hour ago

@CaptainObvious Is this the best way to write this title?

2:37 AM
The phrasing of the close reason just made me have doubts about something... Is something considered off topic if the code is not known to be correct? I would argue yes because unknown correctness is for practical purposes equal to incorrect. The wording of the FAQ is unfortunately a bit inconclusive as well since it says "to the best of my knowledge" -- if you haven't verified that code works, it could be argued that it's working to the best of your knowledge, though once again I would disagree
> I drafted up a piece of Python code late last night, and ran it - without any errors! Besides thinking I needed sleep, I thought it was unusual, and I thought I'd just ask, is this piece of code doing what I'm asking it to do (as it didn't replace any records in the database in question...).
"without any errors", "is this code doing what I'm asking it to do" , and "it didn't replace any records in the database" imply to me that no errors (syntax, etc) occurred but the code does not, in fact, work
And I don't know python well enough to verify this, but I'm 99% sure that the code is faulty since checking the existence of a DB row in a CSV reader makes no sense unless a lot of magic is happening behind the scenes.

I'm ashamed to say I don't follow the news very well
things seem "ok" from where I'm sitting

I'm not much of a news follower either.

I like following the news, it's just I'm doing a ton of other stuff, so it's hard
when on the move I usually grab an Economist magazine to catch up
no economic crises at the moment, and I see some new regulations getting implemented and enforced, which is a good thing
life seems to be improving in general
occasionally I hear from other people that our prime minister (back in Hungary) did yet another dick move, which comes as no surprise

Sounds good. We were very lucky that we weren't much affected by the economic conditions.

yeah, actually I don't know anybody who was affected much

Right now I'm anxiously waiting for the upcoming election to be over so I don't have to listen to any more political ads. One of the major candidates is putting out a barrage of commercials that are all pretty much complete lies.

5:47 AM
yeah, politics is BS everywhere

Strangely, his opponent's ads are all mostly true.

it happens. and unravel later after getting elected

Truthfully, I don't like or trust either of them. Unfortunately, there isn't really a third option.
I'll write some code and watch some TV

can be hard to do at the same time, but may reduce the damage done by the TV ;)

It's an iTunes download so at least I don't have to watch the commercials.

@Sklivvz Leave it to a former Skeptics mod to think that what's built into the framework won't work. @mariosangiorgio I believe you, I had a feeling someone else was going to write an answer to it :)
@mariosangiorgio Overall, I don't really like his approach but haven't exactly put my finger on what I don't like.

Should I change the tone?

Looks like you have a good tone in your answer
Perhaps what I don't like is the if (clock1.isAlive()), I would kinda have expected a boolean inside his gasme, or if he would use Thread.interrupt or something like that. Checking if the Thread is alive doesn't sound like what the assignment intended...
And besides, if the thread is only there to keep a track of time and to end at a specific time, it's not really useful to keep it multi-threaded at all.

I thought you were talking about my "There are a few things I don't like"

6:11 PM
I meant in the OP's approach

I agree that checking if the thread is alive is probably not the best solution. I didn't want to change to much his approach because he is clearly a beginner and we don't know what he has already been taught

Nothing wrong with your answer :)
That is true, it's hard to read the teacher's mind...
But I'd like to think that sometimes we are better teachers than the real teachers.

@SimonAndréForsberg Trust me, we are, but perhaps not in front of a class

I studied to become a teacher once, but I dropped that.

I'm still deciding on what/if I want to study next

6:15 PM
well, I used to be a TA for a software engineering course and I have to say that it is harder that it seems. The reason is mostly that we know much more than students do and it takes a while to introduce all the important things of a subject
the effect of that is that along the way you might have assignments like this that do not really make much sense but you have to choose between not giving the assignment at all or to give it and be happy with solutions that are not clearly the best possible
@skiwi what can you choose from?

After thinking about it the last weeks, it seems like I actually do not want to study theory... I only want to study it when I need to use it in practice
@mariosangiorgio Currently finishing my Bachelor in Computer Science, then I'm pretty much now choosing between either a Game and Media Technology Master or start working/do cool stuff
That Master study definitely seems to have more practical content as this Bachelor study, but still...
I feel like universities are alienated from society.
2

I totally understand. I was really liking more theoretical stuffs and I got to the point of getting a PhD. But then I started working in industry and I like it much more. Lots of challenging problems and all I am asked to write is good code, not prototypes with the sole purpose of write a paper
You should probably keep an eye to the job positions you have available and if you find something you really like jump on it

I have worked in the industry for 1,5 years now (once a week) and I feel like exactly that is driving me away from university
I actually may have a possibility on a job now already... Not the one which I want to be doing for years, but to get financially around
If I could, I might even drop university right now... But oh well, that's not possible with our government, would cost me big time, but it'd probably make me happier

whereabouts do you live?

The Netherlands

6:24 PM
I think that finishing off could good. But maybe it is just that I hate leaving things unfinished. But you said you're almost done so I don't see the point on dropping now

Well there's no doubt that I will need to finish my Bachelor
And yeah I'm on 126/180 study points of my curriculum, with hopefully 15 from an internship and another 15 from software engineering + project

cool, you have at least 30 quite interesting study points ahead of you :)

Yeap, that's my thing to hold onto
I feel like I need to start getting my driving license very soon though... Currently I'm just holding myself back because it's all quite scary, etc.
The real interesting jobs (say in gaming industry) will not be around the corner
and there's nowhere written that you need to do your master directly after the bachelor

yeah, that's true
It's dinner time for me. I'm going to cook something. See you later

6:40 PM
Enjoy :)
Only I might not be ready for the big step on the personal level... But my mind is ready for it, so a bit of a contradiction there ;)
Sure, working will be different from university, but ultimately university (and definitely a master) will take at least 8 hours a day as well

7:01 PM
@skiwi Wilkommen to the group
I tried my theoretical last week; came short one point
Tuesday I'll give it another shot

@JeroenVannevel It's all a big and evil world! In which we as drivers need to survive
I'm not sure if I need to do my theoretical before I'm allowed to at least start driving lessons though

There's a potential of 10 cars, 5 bikes and 5 pedestrians around you. There are at least 20 traffic signs in your field of view at any given time. There are 3 roads that you have to look out for and there are traffic lights, stuff written on the ground, probably a balloon flying over with some more traffic guidance
By the time I interpreted the first few signals, I've already crashed into the truck that I was supposed to give the right of way to
@skiwi You have to. No doubt. You can't get on the road without knowing the rules.

I'm not so sure about that over here
I think I've heard that part of the schools allow you to start simultaneously

Maybe just at the instruction center then? I can't imagine you're allowed on the road

Though could be that in those driving lessons you'll be on some sort of private space then? I also cannot really imagine them letting you simply on the road

7:06 PM
@skiwi In Sweden you can start practice-driving way before you finish your theoretical.
In Sweden you are allowed to practice driving on the road when you're 16 (with an instructor that is technically responsible for all the mistakes you make). And you aren't even allowed to actually take the theoretical test until you're 18.
In February 2015, I will have had my driving license for 10 years...

@SimonAndréForsberg Actually the practical drivings start at 17 as well here since a few years
@SimonAndréForsberg That's an awesome long time

Q: When I "naively" use Cython to define types, my program slows down...what should I do instead?

user89Here is my code, in plain Python (note that import numpy as np has been put in somewhere higher up in the file, and that the functions are inside a class, hence there are references to this as self.<something>): def calculate_point_forces(self, PushMolecules, PushMolecules_iPlus1, PushMolecu...

The reason I've been holding off onto getting a license so far is that a car costs quite a bit and I feel like I need to use it in order to not get afraid of using it
History: My mother also has a drivers license, but she didn't start driving instantly and then got scared of it for whatever reason and still is to this day

I've had a drivers license for almost 10 years, never really been afraid of it. I still don't own a car though, and I have no plans on buying a car.

If you could step in a car today and just drive away, then it's all fine
I assume you do drive in some car regularly though?

7:18 PM
Not really regularly, but every now and then... perhaps... once per two-three months?
Last time I think was when I drove my mother to the airport, which was.... about three months ago.

Well I guess you also build up confidence if you are able to successfully drive every once in a while

Yes, but sometimes I am a bit afraid of myself as a driver though. But I try to always be calm when driving. That's the most important thing IMO.
When I worked in the social service in my municipality about seven years ago, I drove a lot. On horrible roads. Often at night. Sometimes during snow.
One time I even got stuck in a pile of snow at the side of the road, I got late for one hour. That was fun. Not... :)

I don't think you can really unlearn driving though
The thing is that if you go from driving with an instructor to driving alone, that is the biggest step

But when not driving every now and then, I think you do forget some things so your driving gets worse. And also, if you drive too often, then you probably get sick of all the traffic which also makes you a worse driver :)

I see. It's gone anyway, so whatever. Speaking of Java, our next assignment is solely on UML, and it's an individual assignment.

by the same person who suggested the Java site
ugh, I hate UML. Outside university and very few Stack Exchange questions, I have never seen anyone actually using it for real.

This one is based on our car repository programs, and they're to be done, preferably, with UML software incorporated in NetBeans (at least that was mentioned in class). We still have two weeks to complete this.

sounds like something that could be done in an hour...
@skiwi Dutch super-engineering: wimp.com/dogairport

@SimonAndréForsberg Probably so. I'll get to it whenever I can. I still have to tackle this MPI program.

Q: Two Fragments in Landscape Mode Challenge

Jason HartleyI did the following code challenge for a job interview. They apparently didn't care for my solution and I'm not sure why. What could I have done better? Here is the challenge: Create a small app with the following characteristics: With the device in the portrait mode, display a fragme...

@CaptainObvious Crap, I'd like to answer that but I'm rep-capped!

Q: Create Binary, Balanced Tree

Kevin MeredithI wrote a function, which takes a list of Integers, and then makes a balanced binary tree. Please critique it. I'd like to know know how to make it more concise and idiomatic. -- Note that the Integer represents the height of the Tree data Tree a = Leaf | Node Integer (Tree a) a (...

@Jamal apparently not being able to edit a deleted post has undesirable side-effects...

@SimonAndréForsberg do you know if one of these ways is better than the other?
String.valueOf(editText.getText())
editText.getText().toString()

@janos As I believe editText.getText() cannot be null, I would go with toString

thanks Simon. I prefer that way too, but good thinking about being null or not. In the docs I can't find evidence that it can't be null though

I'd be surprised if it would be null. I'd even guess that it would throw an exception if you try to set it to null.
If it is possible for the object to be null, String.valueOf is always the better option.

actually I have applications in play store released with .toString and never crashed, so it should be ok

yeah, I think I have too

about CopyOnWriteArrayList, I learned recently from Effective Java, by Joshua Bloch
it's a really, really great book, in case you haven't read yet

I've read the first 6 items of it
There's three books I want to read:
- Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach
- Effective Java
- Java Concurrency In Practice
I've read about 100 pages in the AI book, 6 items in Effective Java, absolutely nothing in JCIP :)

thanks, I'll check on those too

And then there's also the biography of Steve Jobs I started reading, and the first book in the game of thrones series... :)
The book about AI is a big one, about 1000 pages.

I'm halfway into Effective Java, and maybe 20% in Code Complete
wish I had read these a long time ago
but better late than never

9:59 PM
indeed
I think I've learned most important stuff of Effective Java from Code Review though, but apparently there's some things I have missed.

I guess we learn a little bit, and different bits, from almost everything

and definitely more from CR than SO

You don't learn from SO, you just steal code.
Wish I could give you guys more upvotes, code review is great! — YoungMoney Apr 10 '12 at 1:01

thanks @SimonAndréForsberg for pointing out the thing about handling the InterruptedException there, appreciate it

@janos You're welcome. I see it not being handled appropriately way too often.
Or perhaps I'm the one not handling it properly :)

I think you're right. I started reading up on it here, and I think it lines up with what you said: ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp05236/…

Sounds like something @skiwi should read (or at least open a tab for)

First time I got flag-capped!

25 active flags... @Jamal probably hates me now...
Although this is a chance for @rolfl to increase his moderation stats.

Someone wants a gold badge. ;-)

@Jamal No no no, someone wants to help clean up obsolete comments :) and get a gold badge :)
I promise though, I won't flag-cap every day
This comment made me lol btw:

ttgtb
see you tomorrow

@SimonAndréForsberg Definitely looks like something @skiwi should read. Especially "Listing 6". In all cases where the thread interrupt-flag is restored, it is done so outside any loop.
Night @janos
TTGTB here too
