Q: special summation of integer array elements

Egyptian style brackets are not wrong, that styling is widely accepted and is mostly a preference depending on who you ask. — Malachi 6 secs ago

@Malachi then don't ask me! ..."Egyptian braces" => Java. "Readable braces" => C# ;)

8:26 PM
@Mat'sMug Where is @BenVlodgi when you need him....lol

@BenVlodgi you agree with this? (curious)

@Mat'sMug s/Readable/Horrible/

bah-dum-tsss

^^ Thank you
@Malachi wrong or not, C# has a convention of not using the Egyptian braces.
Use Java conventions for Java and C# conventions for C#
3

@SimonAndréForsberg I can agree with that
@SimonAndréForsberg and that

8:30 PM
Not only should you use the right tool for the job, but you should also use the right conventions for the tool

go with VB

Although of course, if you would have started with the first, then you would be stuck with Egyptian braces :)

back to my problem at work now. I have to find Ghost code making this asp.net page do things that it doesn't have code for (because I deleted it)...I am still trying to change a hard coded value
I think I just passed @Mat'sMug for rep this month.....
What do you guys have against Egyptians anyway @Mat'sMug and @SimonAndréForsberg?

@Malachi I have nothing against them, I use them all the time in Java
I do like them more than I like C#-braces, but when I do C#, I use C# braces anyway

yup, me too

8:48 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg: you dabble around in Spring, right?

@JeroenVannevel yup
Starting a couple of days ago, @skiwi does as well
That said, I can't claim to be an expert in it

me too

What's up?

@SimonAndréForsberg When I build my web app it says "The Module has not been deployed". I clean & rebuild and it says "Unable to delete file C:\spring-web-4.0.1.jar"
Lots of related issues online but none of them actually have an answer

@Malachi I kinda slowed down slightly since last month :)

8:50 PM
Sounds like there's a process somewhere that's using your file

Yeah I figured, but I don't have it open
I'll take a look with process explorer

Is your web server running?

@Mat'sMug I know. how is the new job going?

busy as hell

do you like it?

8:50 PM
yeah, it's basically dev :)

@SimonAndréForsberg Isn't glassfish supposed to start when I build?
Only java.exe has a handle on the spring-web.jar

@JeroenVannevel That is probably Glassfish

@Mat'sMug not sure I know what White Card means

@JeroenVannevel Depends on how you build. Maven? Netbeans? SpringSource? Eclipse?

@SimonAndréForsberg Netbeans

8:53 PM
@JeroenVannevel I'm always using SpringSource for Spring development, but if you're running the webapp from inside Netbeans then Glassfish is supposed to start, yes. At least that's what SpringSource does :)

@Malachi your job: ______________________________
(i.e. develop whatever it is that you deem necessary for our business' needs)

It's a bit weird that it doesn't redeploy the webapp. It should be possible to redeploy without restarting the server. Or perhaps that's not possible for you? I don't think all servers support that
@Mat'sMug I guess a Tic-Tac-Toe Ultimate is not necessary for the business? :/

lol
but I decided I didn't want to use the fugly AS-400 front-end system, and built my own schema on their MySQL server, and now I can issue a report in 5 seconds, that used to take an hour.

@Mat'sMug you lucky....

@Mat'sMug Holy mother of performance improvement
I have no idea what AS-400 is though

runs on unix, no idea either

@Mat'sMug you don't know AS-400 they should be super fast.. you still take your data from them though right
AS-400's OS is a Database.
my Dad is manager of a large AS-400 group for Enterprise Rent-A-Car

yeah, and this is their UI

@Mat'sMug oh yeah. my dad has shown me the interfaces many times.... he actually used to train AS-400 Operators

the backend is ..flat files

ah, looks like something was wrong inside my dispatcher-servlet.xml
good thing we get that file for free on the exam
Found the clue inside the glassfish server logs

So, this is what I started working with at work this week:
Modbus is a serial communications protocol originally published by Modicon (now Schneider Electric) in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Simple and robust, it has since become a de facto standard communication protocol, and it is now a commonly available means of connecting industrial electronic devices. The main reasons for the use of Modbus in the industrial environment are: developed with industrial applications in mind openly published and royalty-free easy to deploy and maintain moves raw bits or words without placing many restrictions on vendors Modbus enabl...

@Mat'sMug I'm glad I already knew how you looked from your Facebook profile :)
@Malachi Remind me to send you Aqua's Barbie Girl next Friday.
Or perhaps you'd like Aqua on Saturdays instead?

I personally like Dr Jones as well

@JeroenVannevel I want Java!!

yeah I don't want that floating around

Now you make me want to listen to 90s music

I used to have a poster of Spice Girls
By the way, Scary Spice is definitely not as Scary anymore...

not sure if I have ever actually watched the video, that was back in the day of something like 56k
@JeroenVannevel that's why there are so many 40 year old grandmas

Hey @Malachi, you proposed I ask for review about code I wrote in an answer : http://codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/60975/summing-up-distinct-elements-in-steps/61009#61009

How should I present the question, is it a follow up on OP's question, a new one? Are there rules about this I should be aware of?

@TopinFrassi There's no rules about that, only guidelines. I think it's enough to say "While reviewing another question(link) it was suggested to me that I posted this code as a new question...."

Sounds good, thanks!

11:27 PM
@vnp So, should I consider the performance cost of looping more than once in an array, knowing that the initial length is unknown

vnp
The complexity O(n) means (loosely speaking) that if the size of data doubles, execution time doubles as well. If we pass an array a fixed number of times it is exactly what happens.

I'm not sure I understand your second sentence.. :/
Let's say I loop trough it twice, the complexity stays O(n) but, n would be (number of items) * 2?
If you prefer, I can go read about that, if you don't have time/ don't want to explain! I don't want to waste your time

vnp
Yes, this is called an asymptotic constant. 1*n is O(n), 2*n is O(n); 1000*n is still O(n)
I am just a very slow non-native speaker.

This is why we never see O(4n) or something like that

vnp
Correct

11:37 PM
The only arithmetic operations that can be used are exp and log

vnp
n^k, n!, etc also can happen
Some versions of sort have n*(log n)^2 complexity

@RubberDuck a Presenter implementing both IPresenter and IDisposable would be a PITA because a "master presenter" would have to do type checks and "casts" to access a "details presenter"'s Dispose method.
(because it's DetailsPresenter As IPresenter)
Makes me question the need for IDisposable altogether...

@CaptainObvious I just created the , I think that one might be useful for the future. I don't see as entirely the same...
Does the mods @200_success @rolfl and @Jamal (and others) agree about that ^^ ?

I guess so..
Retag time?

@Mat'sMug Not sure whether it's best to synonym, re-tag, or leave as two separate tags

Depends.. hold on

11:57 PM
0 questions tagged with the former. Non-issue ;)

@TopinFrassi Just to elaborate a bit about the complexity, think about the complexity if you do `for (int i : integers) { sum += i; }`,
that's O(n) obviously (looping through each item once. But what if you do
`for (int i : integers) { sum += i; }
for (int i : integers) { otherSum += i; }` (i.e. looping through each item twice?) Is that O(2n) ? How would it be different than
`for (int i : integers) { sum += i; otherSum += i; }` ?
Which, again, is O(n)...

@SimonAndréForsberg retag to wolfram-mathematica instead?

@rolfl Sounds like a plan
