Q: New to OOP, struggling with its implementation

DribbleUITL;DR: Am I using OOP correctly? I have asked 2 people and their opinions are almost directly opposite to each others... @DaggNabbit that is pretty interesting
@Phrancis your query output reminded me of it
Now time to figure out how easily I can call a function within a function within a function
To make the classic FizzBuzz output
can you just coalesce everything?
01:05
Likely it is what I will do, however I need to concatenate each column to account for multiple words assigned to the same number
I'm weighing case vs. coalesce right now
I think coalesce will be faster and simpler
Although I don't think I can get away without using a bit of case

A: Optimizing display of various famous quotes

Mat's MugIt seems to me like quotes, creators and margins all belong to the same object; your intuition is correct, merging them into one is the right thing to do. I don't do much web development, so I'm not going to post example code, but I would have the quotes on the server side, and have the script r...

I don't think so @Mat'sMug. It seems reasonable to me.
But I haven't done any web dev in years.
I hate to say, but I have no idea how that would be implemented. I just know that's how I'd approach it.. but I'm a total with anything that runs in a browser
thanks :)
No, that still hard-codes the data on the client, just in a somewhat prettier way: it's lipstick on a pig - data simply doesn't belong in the code. Take a look at this jQuery+PHP/MySQL example, where the quotes are stored in a database. I'd start with something like that. What's on your server side? — Mat's Mug 7 mins ago
@Mat'sMug I think you have a good point
I think data doesn't belong in code transcends language barriers ;)

^^ Excellent answer. Needs votes.
@SimonAndréForsberg user resizable borderpane... Any more context? :)
As far as I know all windows are by default resizable
But you want to make a component resizable?
@skiwi Kind of like Swing's JSplitPane
@SimonAndréForsberg You could use JavaFX's SplitPane

Most things map 1:1
I'll have fun debugging this

I know I have that field
But I have no clue why anything would want to set it to HBox
I don't even want that error to be there.
Oooooh!
I'm stupid.
I accidentally gave my HBox the fx:id = contentPane, instead of the AnchorPane
@skiwi Do you ever want an error to be there?
@skiwi I got a SplitPane wrapped in an AnchorPane, but when I resize the window itself in runtime, the SplitPane does not get bigger.
@SimonAndréForsberg That's got to do with the HGrow resp VGrow
How do I set them in the Scene Builder?
They are somewhere under properties or layout

@SimonAndréForsberg Don't use loops. Recursion FTW
@MadaraUchiha There's no such thing as methods/functions in Brainfuck, and therefore there's also no such thing as recursion.

@MadaraUchiha
Guys to chat with the stack exchange app
It's been 16 hours Hassan, which isn't an incredibly long time for CR.
Really? I didn't even get a single rep.
Does it mean that my quality of code is too good?
xD
Questions with less obvious flaws are harder to come up with reviews for, but also the CR community is relatively small.
If, for example, I were to go out of town for a week (and not bring any Internet with me), any Objective-C or Swift question posted in that week would very likely go without review.
Oh so I have been successful to get rid of less obvious flaws.
Oh.
Well, PHP is the most popular language here, I bet.
Its the easiest language to learn.
14:39
It could be that or it could be that no one who is any good at PHP has looked at it.
People voluntarily learn PHP?
3
I don't look at PHP because I think the language looks ugly.
Many people feel the same way about Objective-C though.
@JeroenVannevel I've been one of them... 6+ years ago
I think nowadays Ruby is getting more momentum though.
Guys I am just 14. And when it comes to web dev, php apps r easy to code. Also, guys could you suggest me a good language to learn in my vacations?
Learn the right language for the job.
What do you want to do?
14:42
C#? C++? Java?
I want to code simple apps
@HassanAlthaf JavaScript
Well not simple
Madara thats what I am learning!
xD
Javascript and Ruby would be good if you want to continue web apps.
apps as in, mobile apps?
Madara review plz
14:43
No time currently
No desktop apps
@HassanAlthaf Please don't keep asking, peole will review once they want to review.
Java, C#, Objective-C, or Swift would be good if you want to do mobile apps.
Ik nhgrif
But i want to code desktop apps
If you want to do desktop apps, it matters less.
14:44
which language should I go for
Each have their advantages and disadvantages.
What sort of apps do you want to write?
And for what platform?
like skype
windows or preferably multi platform
Java is good for cross platform development, getting an userbase is harder though, as not everyone (by far) has Java installed
But there are options around them I believe if you are to package it with a proper installer.
14:45
Java is the easiest for multiplatform development.
C#is good for Windows-only development.
Btw I have knowledge in C#
C# also needs some dependencies as far as I'm aware (and maybe C, C++ as well?), but they are more common and more often have an installer with them (correct me if I'm wrong)
I have coded a simple GUI program in C#
But actually it doesn't matter.
You know PHP right?
Which is a calculator
yeh
14:46
Learn Java, C, C++, C#, Objective-C or Swift.
Then in 6 months come back and start learning a second from that list.
The second will be easier.
And the third easier still.
Objective-C and Swift out.
I would encourage you to learn a strongly typed language at all times.
Skiwi suggest me a specific
@HassanAlthaf C#
that would have alot of trouble
Ya kool Madara.
C# C#
i will try learning c#
14:47
It doesn't matter Hassan. Just pick one, learn it.
But idk where to start learning
The difference between Java, C#, C++, Objective-C, and Swift is mostly syntax.
I was in a gaming community where i learnt php
Yeh nhgrif the concepts r same
Most of the core principles between them are identical.
Yeh
Its all OOP
Same with PHP but its a weak typed languahe
*language or w/e u call it
Can anyone guide me a way to properly learn C# (other than a university.. come on im just 14)
I am coding as an interest not for money.
14:50
Your age doesn't matter when learning a language.
I know.
I am learning codin since 20q0
*2010
PASCAL
Google some guides.
You already wrote a calculator in C#
nhgrid any specific you would recommend?
No, I don't know C#
I know bro but I wanna learn from scratch
I haven't touched C# since a while
14:51
Well, I'm not your bro... but you can't learn from scratch since you already started learning it.
Well, what do you want me to call ya
Plus you already know PHP, so you're not truly "at scratch" for learning any programming language.
Yh

Go write a Complex Number class in C# and post it up for CodeReview.
its rlly nice
What does that do
14:53
It'd be similar to the Fraction questions being posted: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/rational-numbers
Except there's already a ton of those, so do a complex number class
A complex number is a number that can be expressed in the form , where and are real numbers and is the imaginary unit, which satisfies the equation . In this expression, is the real part and is the imaginary part of the complex number. Complex numbers extend the concept of the one-dimensional number line to the two-dimensional complex plane (also called Argand plane) by using the horizontal axis for the real part and the vertical axis for the imaginary part. The complex number can be identified with the point in the complex plane. A complex number whose real part is zero is said to...
I am shit in physics. But would this be WPF or Console?
Just focus on the class that handles the numbers. It has nothing to do with physics, it just is used by physics.
Can you tell it to me in simple language without technical terms
But the data type double is not good enough to handle real numbers, so we need a class, ComplexNumber to hold the complex number.
A complex number is composed of two parts, the real part and the imaginary part.
Do you know FOIL?
Basic algebra for multiplying polynomials.
