@CaptainObvious Hm...sad to see the Java folks apparently intent on maintaining Java's image as slow and wasteful of memory. I haven't used Java much recently, but is there something horribly wrong with the approach in my answer to this one?

A: Recursive implementation of palindrome string checker - refactoring issue

Jerry CoffinIt seems to me that if you're going to do this, it's worth avoiding all those substring calls, since they're pretty slow. It ends up almost simpler without them anyway. private static boolean isPalindrome(String pal) { return isPalindromeImplementation(pal, 0, pal.length()); } private stati...

^^^ I also threw in an answer.... the only wasteful thing is the recursion....
The assumptions in the question are bad.
Code Review please stop being interesting I'm trying to work here!
6
Does anyone here know anything about JAX-WS?
@rolfl Hmm...when the basis of the question starts with "recursive implementation of X", and your answer is "don't use recursion", it seems to me that you're coming dangerously close to simply ignoring the question and writing something entirely inapplicable to the question at hand. Yes, if the question was simply about palindrome detection, iteration would be the right answer, but that's just not what was asked.
4
14:10
@JerryCoffin - you should set the recursion to start with pal.length() - 1
@JerryCoffin Dangerously close.... hmmm.
I might even agree with that...
Using stack-iteration to avoid recursion stackoverflow is okay though I'd say
@rolfl Oops--thanks.
@JerryCoffin Which is why I avoided mentioning that in my answer. Although I guess a little comment about it wouldn't hurt, in addition to the other things I wrote.
Hmmm... that's interesting .... a question asking - how can I improve this recursive method... and I answer: don't use recursion.
2
@SimonAndréForsberg I just broke 150 mugs!
14:13
I believe that ^^^^ is a good answer.... if I was given that code in a real code review.
Will update my answer.
@rolfl What is that ^^^^ ? Your answer? Jerry's answer?
@rolfl I'd tend to agree--for a real code review, you shouldn't be given "recursive" as part of the requirement. But, for things like college assignments such requirements are common. In this case, however, it's apparent that the intent is to ensure that it's using tail recursion, so the compiler can optimize it to iteration, not to use iteration explicitly.
Tail recursion, in Java, does not exist.
(heads off to check that statement)
@rolfl If you want to be more precise, you should say it does not exist in Java 8 or below ;-)
@rolfl Of course it does. Tail recursion is a pattern in the code. The question is whether the Java compiler implements tail recursion elimination. I'd guess you're probably correct that at least most current Java implementations don't include that optimization (I've never checked for it, but I know they're missing a lot of other optimizations that are generally more important and simpler to implement).
14:21
So, tail recursion obviously exists in Java, but the optimization does not.
Some JVM's implement it in the JIT level.
tail call elimination is not possible in some languages that weren't built to support it
this has been a huge issue with js forever and is finally being resolved
because you had things like arguments.callee, you couldn't just drop stuff from the call stack
idk if there's some similar feature in Java that makes it not possible, but maybe
Part of the Java problem with tail-call optimization is the fact that it does not stack-overflow ;-)
Diagnostic stack traces would be.... unusual.
tail call elimination does make stack traces weird, because stuff gets dropped from the call stack
like the way lua implements it, iirc, it just reuses the same frame on the call stack for a tail call
Interesting 'hot question' ... ;-)

@JeroenVannevel I think it might help a bit if you point out what the lines of code in the stack trace(s) are referring to exactly:
> Request.cs:line 17
> ApiDispatcher.cs:line 40
> ApiDispatcher.cs:line 22
..what are the exception types of the inner exceptions?
15:38
I wish I knew myself
The system doesn't know what error is thrown
hmm amazing
The inner exception (singular) returns an error code corresponding to ERROR_NOT_FOUND
Which I suppose COULD make sense if it actually is returning back to caller with an unfinished await response
that would be the MoveNext call failing right?
since it does not execute the rest of the method
Methods returning before their return statement is all kinds of messed up
can you not try/catch and log or output something just for tracing?
15:41
I've looked at everything I could; using a try/catch gave me an Exception that had error messages in its fields
Request:17 = `return await client.GetAsync(uri).AsTask();`
Apidispatcher:40 = `var response = await call.GetRequestMethod().ExecuteRequestAsync(client, requestUri);`
Apidispatcher:22 is the method declaration
I'll let it rest for a few hours and eat some food
I am still running on my one slice of bread at 8 AM
best of luck!

If I have a project with 10-20 source files
and I wanted my code to be peer reviewed
Should I post all those sources on to a single question in this site ?
well I'm a newbie programmer, designing an OOP solution to a project could be very challenging
@topher Probably need to get smaller pieces reviewed individually. A question is limited to (if memory serves) 30000 characters total, so unless the files are fairly small, 20-30 of them probably won't fit. Worse, if a single question gets too huge, people are unlikely to bother reading all of it.

@Mat'sMug If I would have started a bounty earlier today, the amount would be reduced from my reputation directly, and then I would still harbor some up-votes so I would still get rep-capped, and then I would only have lost 40 rep instead of 90.
Oh, "lost".. yeah. Bringing the kids to see the fireworks tonight, so you can get a headstart (if you're not too tired mwahahahaha!)
@Mat'sMug Cute, that whole Quebec national holiday thing

It's just a reason to STM ...
@Mat'sMug Sounds like my kind of celebration.
@Mat'sMug I'm trying to correct my day-rhytm, so I hope I don't get a headstart.
Haha lol! Simon with a normal sleep schedule? We'll have to update your bio if you succeed!
This time-related code could really use some work, and there doesn't seem to be other C++ reviewers around.
Allright, phone's dying (again!), catch y'all tomorrow!
cheers

@Mat'sMug I've actually quite recently already modified my "About me" section in my profile. It doesn't say anything about my sleeping habits though.
I'm still not sure what mine will say after I graduate.
PCG stole a JDQ!

Q: Determine if an integer is divisible by 3

qwrYour goal is to determine if a number is divisible by 3 without using conditionals. The input will be an unsigned 8 bit number from 0 to 255. Creativity encouraged! You are allowed to use Equality/Inequality (==, !=, >, <, >=, <=) Arithmetic (+, -, x) Logical Operators (! not, && and, || or)...

Q: Check if a number is divisible by 3, efficiently

JavaDeveloperEfficient way to check if a number is multiple of three. Looking for code review, best practices and optimizations. public final class DivThreeEfficiently { private DivThreeEfficiently() {} /** * Returns true if the input number is divisible by three. * Else returns false. ...

And... speaking of JDQ.
Oh, you've posted that as well. :-P Thought it was CO.
@ckuhn203 - you should all a 'yes' answer to the meta question.... mention that there are both tags on StackOverflow, and they mean different things.

Since you've already got a working code, you can post it to Code ReviewJan Dvorak Jun 10 at 10:32

Q: Atomic Golf COBOL (IBM Enterprise COBOL)

Bill WoodgerJust to make it clear, Atomic Golf COBOL will not be a competitive golfing language. The longer the shortest answer (80+, the longer the better) the more possible to get close, however, COBOL is very largely hand-coded (little "magic" available). Over the last four months, there are two questions...

@Jamal How dare you confuse me with CO!?
I'm just too used to seeing new JDQ posts. ._.
23:09
@rolfl or @Jamal Do you know if there's any legitimate user (i.e. non-spammers) that have been question-banned on Code Review?
Question bans are disabled here.
Code Review has standard rate-limiting on questions
but no bans
Seems like you're saying a bit different things there...
But I believe the Monkey. (Sorry @Jamal)
Btw, is the Area51 stats still screwed up for questions/day? area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/11464/code-review
@SimonAndréForsberg - everything on SE is rate-limited/throttled.
If you ask a lot of questions there are various thresholds where it will start telling you you can ask again in X hours.
I think it gets to about 1 question per week if you hammer it hard to start with.
That is not a ban, just a throttle.
@SimonAndréForsberg No, we're not. There is rate-limiting everywhere, and on certain sites, there are also question bans.
23:19
Now I have to look it up ;-)
@Jamal So what you're saying is that no one can get question banned here, even if they tried?
Or is it just that no one has been question banned here yet?
@SimonAndréForsberg No, we're not. There is rate-limiting everywhere, and on certain sites, there are also question bans.

Q: The Complete Rate-Limiting Guide

Lance RobertsI noticed that I can only perform certain actions such as commenting a finite number of times in a given period of time. Obviously, rate limiting is in place to prevent accidental misuse or intentional abuse of certain features. Where else is rate limiting applied on Stack Exchange sites, and wh...

@SimonAndréForsberg The first thing. We would need to have a lot more bad questions and users posting those bad questions to convince SE to enable question bans. Otherwise, we just suspend.
@Jamal - you got the deja-vu thing happening.
I was going to say we can suspend people (and have).
but that is both a question and answer (and comment and more) ban
23:22
Except bans are done by the system, and we have no control over them.
@Simon - curious, is there a context for this line of questions?
@rolfl I was just reading some Area51 discussion. I'll see if I can find it

Q: Already covered by CR and SO

warrenProposal: Is my code right is already amply covered by Stack Overflow and Code Review. And what wouldn't be covered thereon, are most likely homework-type questions, which are typically frowned-upon in the "give me teh codez" format.

Second answer
> There are many questions that do not fit in CR or SO. If someone posts these questions there they are severely punished via down voting, question closing, and even eventually banning.
That's what got me wondering if we've ever had a question ban here
I believe we're doing quite good in making users understand what this site is about.
And once they do understand what this site is about, they get up-voted.
We are victims of SO question bans.
people ask their questions on SO, they get shot down hard, and then scatter to the satellite sites to see if they can get help there.
Whenever we see a 'my code does not work' type question from a new user here, we check their so profile to see if they have 'bad' recent question history....
If they have a half-dozen or so 0 or negative voted questions in a row, and recently, it is likely they are Q-banned there, and look elsewhere.
We can check by asking an SO mod.
But, it's pointless, because all we do is close the question here, and the poor guy moves on.
That is indeed a problem of SO users, or SO itself.
This PCG meta answer and it's related SEDE queries are quite interesting
