Q: Photo gallery layout

Maurice PerryI'm working on a photo website, the markup looks like this: <div class="gallery"> <figure> <img src="photo1.jps" /> <figcaption>Photo 1</figcaption> </figure> <figure> <img src="photo1.jps" /> <figcaption>Photo 1</figcaption> </figure> ... </div>...

I really suck at graphic design. I can't even form a good question....

Q: Critique: Business Card Design

MalachiI am looking for a sort of Review of some work that I did for a contest (I didn't win). Personally I think that the business cards look awesome. I used graphics and such from the client's site. (I am not going to blur anything because the information is readily available and I see the Busines...

@kleinfreund everybody has there's bad days ;)
@Malachi and the user with the 22 votes has the same image as that user here : codereview.stackexchange.com/users/40769/…

@Marc-Andre must be from a game or something
Oh... nvm I failed

they are all really good answers
@Malachi Yeah I guess! But I found it funny to see the same image in two different new users for me ! You know you must enjoy the little things in life :P
I didn't know I sucked that bad at design, I almost want them to review my personal business card.... so I can fix it....
@Marc-Andre I think it might be from a TV show
it looks semi- familiar
Music group ? It looks like the design/style of Gorillaz

@SimonAndréForsberg @Vogel612 @BenVlodgi How did you verify that the Polygon question had working code, without knowing what language it was written in?
It looks like pseudocode to me.

Q: Option names : negated or not

Yanick RochonA few years ago, I was in a software engineering class and the teacher explained how messages, options, variables, etc. should not be negated to avoid confusion. @200_success A) It was closed for not having the code in the question, the code is now in the question. B) Although I'm not certain, I'm suspecting Ruby. C) I don't see what's pseudocodish about it. D) Benefit of the doubt.
@CaptainObvious looks off-topic to me .. no real code include in the question
Well @200_success already close it so... I was right :P
I would have been simpler just to wait until the OP acted on my request to add a language tag before reopening.
Too bad that this piece of code fundamentally cannot work :(
It looked quite fun if I had it working
13:45
@200_success for me it wasn't a matter of, if it compile. I don't often actually run the code that I review, so it wouldn't have affected me.
I voted to open that question up, because the original post didn't have any code in it, just a general explaination of how his process worked. But he updated it with what appears to be real code.
When questions are closed for not having working code, that is usually why the user posts the question, because they are looking to have their code fixed syntactically. It didn't not appear to be the case here
It's not Ruby. The div operator doesn't work that way.
Does anyone how to modify outgoing HTTP requests? Still inside a JVM though, I don't really want an all around hack for whole my pc/server

@200_success mainly voted for reopening as of reason A) given by Simon, especially as we had problems with wrong close-reasons ...

@BenVlodgi I did the same thing. It was closed because it didn't have code. I voted to reopen when code was added to it.

14:08
@Malachi Do you know Ruby?
@Malachi I was the one who guessed at Ruby, 200 knew that it wasn't.
I know it doesn't have Semi-colons
But it can have semicolons
it's not written like Ruby, it looks more like a C language or Java
the Semi-colons and the curly brackets tell me that it isn't Ruby, it could be one of the fun flavors of Ruby though.... there are plenty of them
but it looks like a C Type Language to me
maybe R?
no, it's too verbose for R

@skiwi that thing thought my C++ was english, or possibly french

And if we have to, we reserve a human language for every college senior's toy language to do the world the service of preventing more Perl from being written.

@dreza I am trying to implement something at work and look through Documentation at the same time, I haven't been able to find anywhere in the code I am working on at work that I can test the idea though
TTQW later all!

@Malachi I'm not sure about the factory. I think I like it, or at least the idea. Just working through a possible alternative answer now.
When in doubt, write a factory.
that factory is a built in part of the database library the OP is using, but it doesn't really create anything....
@Malachi I don't think it will even let you compile if you try it as suggested (I think). Haven't got VS open at the moment.
@Mal
Was thinking of wrapping that built in factory with another factory behind an interface so that the built in one is hidden from the Db itself...???
20:35
@dreza I edited that into my answer at the end as well....lol
> something else that you could do is create a class that will create a factory and take parameters when it is constructed so that you don't have to assign all the parameters like that, you just give the new factory wrapper all the information and then call what you need built.
@Malachi yeah, that was along the lines I was thinking after seeing your comment
someone of CR lookin at our questions/answers? cause same for me +45 rep SO today out of the blue
@chillworld same here
well mister anonymous thx you :)
What annoys me about SO is the scramble to have the first answer, while most answers' code is ugly and sometimes works no better than the OP's code

I haven't seen any rep on SO yet?
what you guys think of class overriding in java?
@chillworld What do you mean by "class overriding"?
@Phrancis I only ask questions on SO.
create a class from a framework in your project (same name, same package)
and classloader takes your implementation of class
@Phrancis I especially like shitty questions that attract an assembly line of horrible "try this" answers.

@chillworld Sounds like a very dangerous practice to be used only in the most extreme cases.
No kidding @Jamal if you don't know what you're doing leave it to someone else who does, it's like a race for reputation over there
I use it for inserting extra logging while I'm debugging
Many of those are dupes, but of course, why close as a dupe when you can snag some quick rep instead?

but normally never for prod envirement

I've probably used it, but I would think very carefully, and then I would reconsider at least four or five times. Sometimes though, jumping out of a moving car is your only solution.

A: Native App faster than HTML5

MalachiI found a link inside of the Link you posted that has a section on the page why it is faster Under the hood: Rebuilding facebook for IOS the section is named (Re-)Building for speed . One way we have achieved this is by re-balancing where we perform certain tasks. For example, in iOS, the...

there is one, but I thought that this question was answered on another site????
@Donald.McLean the biggest issue is hen you upgrade that framework (and the code of that class is updated) you will most likely forget to alter that class to
hmmm maybe it was posted there......
this is an off topic question and this is one of the better answers. it shouldn't be a comment. it is much to long to be a comment, and it has too much information to be worked into a comment, it is an answer. — Malachi Oct 28 '13 at 1:30
@Donald.McLean what are your 21 answers on SO then? :p
@chillworld And that too.
@chillworld From when I was young and stupid.

Check if this is ready for reopening:

Notice that more than half of my SO answers have received no more than 1 vote.
@Jamal I get "Uncaught ReferenceError: $ is not defined" ;)
@Donald.McLean hope that the second value is changed and not the first
@DaggNabbit You could mention that, then.
21:00
@Jamal he just forgot to tag it with whatever he's using, presumably jQuery or zepto or whatever else likes to call itself "$"
it is still broken though, "Uncaught ReferenceError: filteredQuantity is not defined "
@Jamal It's still not complete code I believe
He sets canoe = filteredQuantity but never sets filteredQuantity?
I'm off see you later all
later
C# check if assignment resulted in an issue, if it did do something else. what am I?
Nevermind I got it
21:20
How does getting rid of a tag work? If I thought a tag should be removed how do I start the process?
from a post or from CodeReview?
Sorry, from the site
Meta post is where you start.
@SimonAndréForsberg I think the root problem is that ELO is fundamentally flawed. It makes too many assumptions about reliable internet connections and honest players. The problem with that though is that there's not a better system :/.
@AlexL Yes, from Meta, using the tag .

@Jamal Thanks

Q: Contests and Challenges? Burn [contest-problem]

Alex LGoing through the tags, I found that we have a contest-problem tag. It would be a good tag, except we already have the programming-challenge. programming-challenge has 202 questions tagged. contest-problem has 18 questions tagged. It is a synonym to programming-challenge, but they are both af...

Dear Santa, you would be amazing to grant me just one more answer upvote before midnight, so I can hit +200 today! - Your [favorite?] mug.
Granted!
Awesome!! I'll be a good mug, promise!

I'm sure you're Santa's favorite mug.
Maybe his favorite mug--but I (Hacker the Reindeer) am always at the top of Santa's computerized list of the good little boys...

NO, I AM
@Mat'sMug I'm blaming the fact that the question I wanted to answer today was removed right before I was about to post my answer!
