Q: compairing 2 lists of peptide to spectrum rankings generated bij 2 difrent algoritms

user3700660I would like to get some feedback on my coding style or other remarks that can be made. This program gets 2 lists of peptide to spectrum matches, so evry spectrum title is linked to a list of 1 or 10 posible peptides and this program checks for occurance on both lists and if they do occur on bot...

@CaptainObvious That's a lot of spelling errors.

who removed the comments from this question: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/54059
the comments pointed out things that were broken
the comments were removed and the question reopened with things still broken
the question was answered, the answer points out the broken things
the question should never have been reopened as it was broken correct?

They were removed after the question was reopened. Many of them were noisy as well.

my initial comment pointed out two broken things
one was fixed
one was not
OP wanted it reopened but never addressed second broken thing
as you can see from answer...
> in your example, jqueryButton is a jQuery object, so you can't do jqueryButton.href. If you want to access the href property, use the prop() method:
it was broken
this was mentioned in my comment that is now deleted, and never addressed by OP
idk what the sequence of events here was but i assume that with comments removed it was no longer obvious that it was broken
so people reopened it

9:21 PM
Again, they were removed after the question was reopened, not before.

ok. so can someone explain the topicality of broken questions to me
why are we reopening them
and answering them

simple mistake? Someone didn't read the comments?

there was also discussion about it here

Dang. @Jamal caught the period I missed.

ugh

9:27 PM
Not all of us chill on 2nd monitor. There are other users...
It sucks. Vote to close it. Move on.

three of the 5 reopeners are regulars here
i cant

Oh.

i already vtc'd
seriously, if we entertain that kind of garbage here what makes us any better than SO?

Now I see why you're upset.
Nothing.
Some people didn't seem to agree with me earlier about some hypothetical code too.
I think it did eventually get closed too though.

You may also argue your point on Meta. Not everyone will see it here, especially as it gets pushed back by other discussions.

SQL ORDER BY always goes at the very end of a SELECT right?

@DaggNabbit A "problem" with the question is that he doesn't seem to be aware of the brokenness. The question asks for how it can be done cleaner, not for how to fix a problem with the code. I remember seeing that question in the re-open queue and pressing "skip" on it, because I couldn't tell if the code had been fixed or not.
Once a question that was closed for not having working code is edited with modifications to the code, it is easy to assume that the code has been corrected.

@Phrancis COUNT(*) is fast on MySQL MyISAM tables. It's slow on InnoDB and PostgreSQL.

What about MS SQL Server?

9:39 PM
@skiwi Football, I assume?

@SimonAndréForsberg it should not be easy to assume that when there is a comment indicating brokenness that has not been addressed by the change
@Phrancis after the WHERE clause
but before stuff like LIMIT

After HAVING right?

@DaggNabbit True indeed. If your comment wouldn't have been there, I would probably have voted to re-open the question.

@Phrancis This implies that COUNT(*) is slow on SQL Server.

Q: What can speed up a SQL count query?

MacGyverWhen doing a count (aggregate) SQL query, what can speed up the execution time in these 3 database systems? I'm sure many things could speed it up (hardware for one), but I'm just a novice DBA, so I'm sure I'll be getting a few answers here. I migrated about 157 million rows to a SQL Server dat...

@Phrancis having goes after group by

9:44 PM
What I'm writing is:
SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY
I feel pretty safe in saying this is right just wanted a 2nd opinion :)

yeah that looks right :)
@Jamal apparently there is nothing to argue; I thought it had been reopened as a result of the comments being removed but if that's not the case there's nothing that can be done... assuming people realize broken stuff is OT, the problem is just that people can't identify broken stuff and vote to reopen based on their inability to assess the code properly
always going to be a problem where subject matter has low barrier to entry
this is why i miss pre-google-groups usenet
even if subject matter had low barrier to entry, the actual vehicle for discussion had reasonably high barrier to entry and you mostly got high-quality stuff to look at

Q: JavaScript: Google Analytics tracking code

yoshiI don't know much about JavaScript. But it would be great if someone could explain me what the code by GoogleAnalytics does that you paste on your website. A line by line explaination would be great. <script type="text/javascript"> var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount'...

Is there a way and is it encouraged to report serial minor-editors?
Someone edited a 2 year old post of mine to add 2 characters (that didn't even change anything). His history is full of page after page of tiny edit, and I believe it to be an attempt to game the system, not a bad case of OCD.

DELETE FROM Work WHERE User = 'Phrancis';
Bye y'all

Bye, Phrancis

@Corbin You might have to flag one of their posts.

10:29 PM
@Corbin Such edits should be rejected as too minor. Or does the user already have full editing privileges?
@Corbin If it was @Malachi who did it, then he probably will stop now that he has the Copy Editor badge :)

He has full editing privs.... It's a user on SO.

Q: How can I optimize this SQL ranking generator query?

JanSo I have a World Cup fixture app where people can guess the results of the matches. Everything is working great but each time I update the ranking it takes 20 minutes for just 3000 users. So there must be something really wrong with this. These are the tables being used: Users CREATE TABLE `u...

Idk... I probably won't pursue it. Most of the edits are arguable... It's just about 20% of them that are obviously trivial with 60% most likely trivial.

custom flag it for a moderator

10:47 PM
Yeah, I might should. Definitely seems to be someone gaming for a badge :/

11:37 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg what are you talking about. I try to only make edits if they add the the quality of the post, and are more than at the least 6 characters
was it me?

11:58 PM
It wasn't haha. Don't worry; it was someone on SO with a history of about 500 edits with very, very few questions/answers. (Not that mostly editing has anything wrong with it -- it's just minor edits make the lack of questions/answers suspicious :p)

@Corbin Agreed
I have plenty of Questions and answers here
not so many on SO
