Q: String length calculation implementation in Assembly (NASM)

pacoalphonsoI just made a working implementation of calculating a string's length, but I'm not exactly sure it's the most efficient way. I divide the string up in blocks of four bytes each (32 bits), and add 4 to EAX. Once I hit a completely NULL block, I roll back the count of EAX by 4 bytes, and then calcu...

Q: please suggest edits

C0mmand0_Gr33nSo, I am a beginner in java. I am just 14 years old and have been learning java through online videos. Here is some simple code. Please suggest edits. import java.util.Scanner; import java.util.* ; public class LMComplex { Scanner name = new Scanner(System.in); Scanner age = new Scanner(System...

@NiallSzalkai Why you can't post a question?
@StackExchange Holy mother of scanners!
@StackExchange An edit there is pending which changes indentation, need help rejecting it
@SimonAndréForsberg When one scanner isn't enough, you can always add more.
It could use a meaningful title, not sure what one would be good though
@Simon why did you roll back?
I had my answer running with indentation stuff.
then you edited, I removed it, and then you rolled back..
@Vogel612 It seemed that the indentation was not a copy & paste error
11:24
alrighty then...
it looked like a copy & paste problem the first time I checked, but then I looked again and it was not... so I decided that an answer about it is appropriate.
So go ahead and write your answer, I will also write one but about other things (Hello, Scanners!)
Does anyone have a clue about what an AI course could be about if it doesn't involve programming, and seems to require more than theory alone?
ie. It's not a course that only has lectures, but also has exercises

Q: BEM syntax for image naming?

morkroToday I was thinking about how the structure/naming convention of my images in the project's folder is and how to improve it or make it more readable. Should we use BEM sytnax (or any other) for image naming? Usually my project's or any other project's I'm working with have no naming convention...

I should get going actually
@SimonAndréForsberg Rolfl beat me to it..
ima go for naming then...
Scanners are yours to take.
11:29
Oh...... there was a race? I missed this whole thing... sorry.
yeah, I figured I would get just the two basic things out of the way, and then let other read the actual code;-)
@skiwi Probably it's about AI Theory then? :)
Neither of you changed the title? Jamal will be scandalized?

Q: Questions & Responses: Let me tell you about you

C0mmand0_Gr33nSo, I am a beginner in java. I am just 14 years old and have been learning java through online videos. Here is some simple code. ^^^^ Much better.
@SimonAndréForsberg you're not using try-with-resources... is that planned??
12 views, 4 answers. Not bad.
@Vogel612 My gun is fast, but not that fast. I am aware that there are more stuff to write.
Heh, I figure that question will be 'Hot' any moment now.
11:41
Someone know why I haven't got for that answer?
@Vogel612 You probably suck at failing.
@Morwenn I don't really have a problem with that ;) but... A badge is a badge...
@Vogel612 Communit♦ may have stolen your badge.
deleted by owner yesterday.
definitely not..
11:46
lool why did this not show up in my Multi Collider (TM) Super DropDown (TM) Inbox?
For some badges, you don't get notifications.
This question appears to be off-topic because it is about a naming system, and not the actual code that does it. This question has no code to review, yet. In its current state, this question is not suitable for any site on the SE network that I am aware of. Naming things is an opinionated, fuzzy business. There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things. -- Phil Karltonrolfl ♦ 52 secs ago
tactful enough?
Probably when you already know that you will have it. I didn't get notified for the rollback badge either.
@SimonAndréForsberg I'm a noob and posted some dumb easily googled questions a month or so ago, my own fault :) - its ok though I have a colleague who has a SO account and posted the question for me.
@rolfl You forgot threads and regexp.
11:48
@NiallSzalkai btw, nice image Mr. Elric
@Vogel612 Why can't I find an anime as good or better :(
you are more the seinen guy or the shounen guy?
mb. I can do sth. about that, if you tell me ;)
Both tbh
I quite like some of the more childish anime, but I also really really like the darker anime
I started the death note manga which I love at the moment
you might want to check out CodeGeass then
I have a preference for seinen :p
11:52
I've heard its good, also stiens gate
@Morwenn then these are perfect for you, too ;)
@NiallSzalkai can only recommend both.
I also watched DeathNote for a while, but after a certain someone died, I stopped...
because it got quite uninteresting.
I'm not up to the point of a certain someone dying yet, I have a feeling I know who you are on about though
brb, smoke
@Vogel612 CodeGeass screams "boobs" whenever I look at the artworks.
@Morwenn definitely not.
there was that one episode with a slight hint of it, but no.
Death Note was a good read.
I'm more in mangas like xxx Holic.
11:56
FWIW, the beginning of the Anime also was..
@Morwenn probably the most guys here now got the wrong impression...
Probably...
the corresponding multiverse is f*cked up hard, though.
The end of Tsubasa is kind of f*cked up yeah, but the multiverse problem has not that much of an influence on Holic.
The forgotten memory thing was hard to follow though. But the goal was probably to make the reader as lost as the hero, so I consider it an excellent move from the authors.
has anyone seen the blade and soul anime yet, based on the mmorpg
nope.
12:00
nope.
but while we're at it.. Blood+ is a nice seinen anime too..
that association rule though...
blade and soul --> blood+
I don't really like to watch animes. I would rather read the corresponding mangas.
watch?
you mean read, don't you ;)
No no, I watch animes :D
Good morning everyone.
12:02
@Vogel612 I watched the first episode of DeathNote and I've stopped already...
The only anime I watched recently was Kill la Kill.
@Donald.McLean Good morning :)
@SimonAndréForsberg well it's not everybodies...
I love kill la kill
still a bit behind though
@Morwenn Tsubasa as in Tsubasa Chronicle? Mokona Modoki okidoki!!
@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah, that one :)
12:04
feels really old
2
Apparently, the wrong member of my family is in this chat room. My daughters are the anime/manga fans. I stick with traditional SFF.
@NiallSzalkai The synchronization between images and musics in Kill la Kill is pure genious!
I loved the Tsubasa Chronicle anime, but am not entirely about the fact that they haven't ended the anime properly. (but from what I've heard about other animes, that's usually the way it's done)
@rolfl HA!!! I'm 10 years older than you.
@Morwenn Yes!, its so dam good
12:05
@rolfl Are you currently thinking of the good ol' COBOL? :D
@rolfl That's perhaps because you are really old...
Hey, I scored big with cobol on PCG recently.... still getting rep on that one;-)
3
@SimonAndréForsberg I didn't watch the anime, but I had to read the end of the manga several times to understand what was going on.
Getting rep on an enemy site? That's not right!
12:06
@Morwenn I somehow lost track after 100 episodes of the manga...
and it's hard to make me lose track..
then I continued to read another 30 epsiodes or so..
and then lost interest..
@Vogel612 It's hard to follow when the hero is the son of his own clone.
got especially problematic when I became unable to differ between those two..
they look exactly the same..
That's why I had to read the end several times^^"
Ahh... so anime is like Bold&Beautiful?
Clones are generally supposed to look the same...
12:08
but CLAMP had the awesome idea to have them dress the same..
usually that's where you divide twins / clones in anime/manga, if not by hairstyle or scars..
That's CLAMP for you...
But the "real" one is one-eyed, right?
2 hot questions, to hot answers ;-)
I love the Earth Science question.
Actually, I find many questions on many SE websites more interesting than the ones on CR.
But I generally have no idea what to ask or to answer...
The people here are nicer... ;-)
(even you .... ;-)
I have a question about a question... I'm attempting to make a small program related to a game. My code is small and repetitive but not complete (I don't know how to complete it), I already know alot of the code could be better. Should I post the question now or wait until it is complete?
12:15
@rolfl That's cute :p
@NiallSzalkai source code on Code Review has to be working. If your application as a whole isn't working yet, you can still ask for feedback on those parts that are already finished – ideally, the parts would be so loosely coupled that they could be tested independently.
@amon the code is basically a countdown, its current elements are functional. I know I would have to repeat the existing code another 5 times but the actual code has the same function with slight differences. Would this still need to be complete? I don't mind either way
@Morwenn - get the oneboxing right! ( ;-) )
@Morwenn That is actually a very good question... I'm also wondering that.

12:22
One of my problems with Code Review is that I often have components depending on smaller components taht themselves depend on smaller utility components. In the end, I end up posting loads of code to have one small function reviewed...
@NiallSzalkai If you are able to finish it first before submitting it for review, I'd recommend doing so.
@rolfl How did you do that? :o
hehehehehe ;-)
https links don't get oneboxed correctly (afaik)
http vs https ;-)
12:24
@SimonAndréForsberg Will do, I'm having problems with the code already though. I think I've approached it wrong, but I'll try to fix that before posting :)
Thought about it, but it didn't make any sense to me^^"
It is very annoying that JPA annotations must use constants.
@Morwenn Ah, Kill La Kill...
@Yuushi Do you like it? :p
  @NamedQuery(name="entity.query", query="SELECT * FROM Entity e ORDER BY e.id")
12:36
@Morwenn Sort of. Definitely not the usual sort of thing I'd watch
@Donald.McLean just like all other annotations... what would you like to use?
but entertaining enough
I generally don't watch anime, but that one was special enough.
depends on the anime...a lot are really badly adapted
Let's not talk about Fruits Basket.
12:39
@SimonAndréForsberg The result of a function call.
It has been decided that a newer version of the system is going to have changes in the DB column names, so I need to initialize some of the DBs with one version of the object, and some of them with the other version of the object.
@Morwenn Definitely not. Have people send us fruit baskets so we can eat the fruit.
@Morwenn I've only seen the anime for that, but it was a long, long time ago
@Yuushi I've never seen an anime that screamed "50$ budget!!!" more than Fruits Basket.
how about flame of recca?
I don't remember seeing even a proper walk animation in the first episode.
(Fruits Basket)
@Morwenn oh yeah, I never asked you the other day, who are the main influences for your band?
12:46
@Yuushi Excellent question. I don't really know. Breton tunes and black metal for sure.
But I couldn't cite band names.
I was composing my first song for the band some weeks ago, my personal influences were Dir en Grey, Mr. Bill, Infected Mushroom and Depeche Mode.
heh, which era Dir en Grey?
GAUZE
nice
The song that influenced me was Schwein no Isu.
I own a first edition of Gauze
12:49
Must be quite hard to find nowadays :)
would have bought it in 2003, so yeah, I imagine so
I still like what they do, but I sometimes miss the old songs.
yeah, same
They totally gave up on the pop songs :/
ever listen to kuroyume?
12:52
Never heard about them.
probably the biggest inspiration for VK era Diru
That wasn't X-Japan? :p
@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah thanks, I figured out that a subject about AI is probably about AI...
musically, Kuroyume sounds more similar
@Yuushi Do you have a particular song you want me to listen to?
Thanks :)
@Yuushi It's very hard for me to find Asian music that I like.
@Donald.McLean You don't like K-pop?
@Donald.McLean It's an...acquire taste
@skiwi I don't have a blanket like or dislike for any genre. However, some genres have a much higher "like rate" than others. My like rate for Country is so low that it's just about zero.
13:03
I don't have a problem with asian music, but it was hard to get use to Japanese lyrics.
My one anime/manga loving child has added quite a bit of J-pop and K-pop to our collection and I've found a couple that I like. My other child listens to metal and the like rate for metal is low, but higher than J-pop and K-pop.
monking
@Morwenn I have lots of non-English music in my library. It's effectively an instrumental with voice as an instrument. iTunes for a while was offering a free Latin song every week and so I picked up quite a bit of that.
@Donald.McLean when you say non-english metal... You got a Rammstein-collection??
there's plenty of other non-english metal :P
13:11
Hey everyone
@Vogel612 Non-English MUSIC, not metal. For example: youtube.com/watch?v=F27v27RuVH8
@Malachi Hey :)
I know this is a closed question but someone give me a little bit of credit for my answers please. :)

@Morwenn how are you this fine morning?
@Vogel612 Most of the time, we don't even understand what the singer is saying. So the language does not matter that much...
@Malachi This mornig is a fine afternoon :p
I would just like to take a moment to send out a Happy 24th Birthday wish to the Hubble Space Telescope which was launched this day in 1990.

13:15
Yay /o/
@Morwenn even better. I have a slight wine hang over, teaches me to get cheap wine. the Riesling was a mix of riesling and something else German, "Vaner"? or something like that. it didn't taste like any Riesling I have ever tasted. it tasted more like a bad Gewurztraminer
@Yuushi well I know... But I also know, they are quite popular, even outside of germany.
@Donald.McLean holy crap, I was 5 years old at the time
@Morwenn Are you a Neal Stephenson fan by any chance?
I am trying to come up with a down payment for a bike, here are my choices.
13:19
I wasn't even born yet @Malachi
the second one is a Sportster, but it is a 2013, I would get a different seat and a bigger gas tank with it
@Vogel612 lol
@Yuushi I don't think that I read anything from him.
@Malachi 2nd one looks nicer, I don't know shit about bikes though
@Morwenn Phew, I was afraid I had a doppleganger :P
@Yuushi I don't think I have a doppleganger anyway :p
13:21
The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer is a postcyberpunk novel by Neal Stephenson. It is to some extent a science fiction bildungsroman or coming-of-age story, focused on a young girl named Nell, and set in a future world in which nanotechnology affects all aspects of life. The novel deals with themes of education, social class, ethnicity, and the nature of artificial intelligence. The Diamond Age was first published in 1995 by Bantam Books, as a Bantam Spectra hardcover edition. In 1996, it won both the Hugo and Locus Awards, and was shortlisted for the Nebula and other...
@NiallSzalkai I like both. but the first one has a bigger engine and lots of extras to make it even faster.
the second one is nostalgic (in terms of Motorcycle History) it's the '48 model
in this coming picture you can see a 72 in the background
@Donald.McLean I was actually thinking Cryptonomicon or The Baroque Cycle (or Snow Crash...)
Man that second bike is so nice
@Yuushi YMMV but The Diamond Age is one of my favorite SF novels of all time.
13:23
@Yuushi Just to check: have read some Ryū Murakami?
@NiallSzalkai the only thing I don't like is that it is a smaller engine really.
@Donald.McLean Oh, what else makes the list?
@Malachi Then its down to looks or function :)
@Morwenn the Dragon Villagegod??
@NiallSzalkai the Sporty get's minimally more gas mileage, but I have to order extras (Gas Tank, and seat, at the least)
13:25
@Vogel612 What?
gas tank for that bike is like $1000 with installation, I would attempt it myself but it is fuel injected
@Morwenn Only Sputnik Sweetheart and After Eark
time to get to work though. hopefully I will get some freelance jobs here soon
Ryu --> Dragon
Mura --> Village
Kami --> Hair, Paper, God...
@Malachi Does the cost even out or is the green bike much cheaper?
13:26
@Yuushi Several Heinlein, Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series, The Mote In God's Eye. Hard to think of everything off the top of my head. It's easier with music since I have a system.
This chat is getting almost as complicated as the CLAMP multiverse..
2
I need to read more Heinlein. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was great
@Yuushi That's from Haruki Murakami, not Ryū Murakami :p
@Morwenn Whoops, I just read the last name
then no :P
@Morwenn okay, you are officially 250% nerdy now..
13:28
@Yuushi Stranger In A Strange Land is first on my list, but MIAHM and Starship Troopers also high.
@Vogel612 Why do you say so? ç___ç
@NiallSzalkai sort of. I can't get the same length on the loan though, so my payments would be higher on the green one, plus the green one (night train) is 10 years older and has 24,000 miles already, whereas the black (sporty) is brand new, no miles, slightly cheaper payment because of the length of the loan
@Malachi Black one ;)
@Malachi imo it looks nicer, and is cheaper
@Morwenn oh, you know...
@Malachi Well not cheaper, but more convenient
13:29
@NiallSzalkai that is what I am thinking for at least a year, build up some equity in the bike with Harley and then get a bigger one next year
@Donald.McLean I didn't actually like Stranger in a Strange land all that much
@NiallSzalkai they are almost even, but my father-in-law and I were thinking the same thing about getting the black one
@Yuushi Well, the strange religious and philosophical aspects turn lots of people off.
@Malachi If i had the balls to ride a bike, I would want to ride the black bike
@Donald.McLean From memory, some of the characters annoyed me a bit
13:33
@NiallSzalkai the Black one would be fun, but I would like one similar to the green one only newer, it's much faster and has more get up and go
@Morwenn Fruits Basket was the first anime I ever saw, and one of the best also. I've started reading the manga but haven't finished it.
@skiwi Not just about AI, about AI theory!
@SimonAndréForsberg I never finished to read it. I got to volume 17~18 but couldn't bear Tohru anymore. I found her too annoying^^"
@Malachi It's called the '48 model because that's your life-expectancy?
@SimonAndréForsberg then you haven't seen enough good anime..
@rolfl harsh....lol
13:39
It's not a bad anime, but not a good one either..
@rolfl I used to ride a Suzuki sport touring bike, and I never changed the oil in it. I got quite a few miles out of that one
I was younger and not very motorcycle savvy
Being older does not make other drivers smarter.
I know a lot of folk 'into' motorbikes, and, the most dangerous thing on the road, to them, is other drivers.
I believe them when they say they are safe, smart, and defensive on the road... and I also believe them when they say that the accidents they have been in were not their fault (and they tend to be honest when it was their fault too).
2
Still, I have visited too many in hospital ;-)
which was not their fault... but they were the victim.
@Morwenn Tohru is sweet. If someone is annoying, it's gotta be Ayame. At least in the anime.
@rolfl I love to Ride! and it has been far too long since I had my own bike, I know I will appreciate a bike a lot more now when I get one.
@Vogel612 Perhaps I haven't. I mostly like some of the philosophical / psycological aspects of Fruits Basket. Many other animes seem to be more about action and violence.... or even one guy living together with a whole lot of girls (whatever that anime was called...)
13:45
@rolfl I was saying I didn't take very good care of my bike back then
@SimonAndréForsberg there's a ton of them..
^^ and I'm saying ot does not really matter how much you care for your bike... you can't care for all the idiots on the road.
If you are into mindfuck psycho I'd recommend Serial Experiments Lain..
Out of interest ... this is relevant to me: zdnet.com/…
and Boogiepop Phantom
and Ergo Proxy
13:46
@Vogel612 is mindfuck anything like Brainf*ck?
If you are into psychological stuff, I'd tend to send you over to Code Geass
well... probably worse.
> Nvidia, for example, has already implemented Power solutions with its own GPU portfolio and accelerator framework for Java, which the processor giant revealed already gave way to up to eight times better performance on Hadoop Analytics applications
It's stuff that you go crazy over, when trying to wrap your head around it, even though you are sure it somewhere somehow makes sense..
or it's worse..
and then it's a mindbreaker..
or maybe try Haibane Renme first
13:49
@Vogel612 From memory, had the same director as Lain?
no clue..
@Vogel612 I didn't find Fruits Basket that mindfucking...
well It's not really made to be that way...
but if you say "psychological" anime, you're probably best of in the mindfuck area.
almost everything else falls into the action / retardation scheme..
and then there's the pseudo and real ecchi stuff...
@Yuushi first on the tvtropes list of examples for mindscrew is NGE..
@Vogel612 Well, it's fair enough that it's there
I'm guessing Perfect Blue should also be there
it is there..
13:53
Boogiepop Phantom is also good
didn't watch it yet..
lol there is even a Naruto example of a mindscrew..
no thanks >.>
well it's not a real mindscrew...
monking!
I meant no thanks to having to watch it
13:58
@Mat'sMug monking ;)
@Yuushi well... It's somehow entertaining... but somewhen it's always the same pattern...
just like OnePiece.
or.. every long-running fighting anime overall..
pretty much
@Mat'sMug afternking!
I raised a flag this morning. VB6 will stop compiling our project when a module has more than 65,534 lines of code; we have a module with 51,832 lines, and no apparent will to stop the copy+paste madness.
4
@Mat'sMug Sounds like you need fire, and lots of it. Potentially to use on the people writing this as well.
When I say "this is unacceptable" I'm told "that is by your standards, it's subjective"...
14:06
facepalm
@Mat'sMug write an e-mail or some other official doc.
and when it breaks, tell them "I told you."
4
That's probably all you can do..
when it breaks, I won't be there anymore. 100% probability.
when it breaks, they will beg you to come back.
They'll probably just split the module in two separate files, it's going to work still.
@Mat'sMug why does the Module have 52k lines of code?
@Mat'sMug Find the VB Standards and show them how subjective it really is
14:12
So that is what that dotted line is...

Q: What is the meaning of the "catchup marker" in Chat?

slhckOccasionally, in chat, a dashed bar appears. It is called catchup-marker (as you can read in its CSS). The chat FAQ says: If you have chat open but we don't think you've seen new messages, the system adds a dotted line like this My questions: When exactly does it appear? The FAQ says,...

@SimonAndréForsberg lol

Q: Why does double brackets notation escape strings in bash?

chrisopediavar="foo" if [[ ${var} != 'bar' ]]; then... If you run this piece of code in bash debug mode (bash -x), it reads out as follows: [[ foo != \b\a\r ]] It still passes correctly, but why does it show the escapes? Is there a better way to do this?

@Malachi because, uh... Spaghetti Code FTW!
(but "spaghetti code" is subjective, too)
14:20
@Mat'sMug some is, some isn't..
looking/glancing at the code in there, looks like I'd probably bring it down to around 10K lines if I seriously tackled it. I'd probably create a dozen classes, too.
but hey, why make "perfect code" out of something that already works?
this job is maddening...
@Yuushi If you read the beginning of Number of the Beast, you get a pretty good indication that even Heinlein didn't actually like Stranger in a Strange Land (one of the characters dismisses it with a comment about what horrible books some authors produce when they're desperate for money).
@StackExchange off topic, if I understand that question correctly.
@JerryCoffin Interesting :)
Woe to You Oh Earth and Sea
for the Devil sends the beast with wrath
because he knows the time is short
Let him who hath understanding
reckon the number of the beast
for it is a human number
its number is six hundred and sixty six.
wrong number of the beast, huh? ;)
14:26
@amon I'd tend to agree--while it does have (a tiny bit of) code that could be reviewed, that doesn't seem to be the intent.
@Mat'sMug Yup.

Q: Countdown Code, League of legends (game) related

NiallSzalkaiI have written some code to track buffs as a side addition to the popular game League of Legends, See here for those of you who don't play the game. My code is incredibly repetitive and I also have the issue of not being able to track multiple buffs, although that might not be on topic for the q...

I should probably point out that I'm not a big fan of The Number of the Beast either. It starts off well enough, but (IMO) goes off the rails pretty quickly.
@JerryCoffin So what's on your list of favourites? :)
Some weird guy just posted a question about some countdown code, what a wierdo
btw, any news on posting follow up code yet?
"Bronze badge: First rolflback"

14:36
@Yuushi Oh, let's see: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Glory Road for a couple. Also quite a few of the short stories, though it's been long enough since I read most of them that I don't remember most of the names.
@JerryCoffin Oh, I meant in general for SF, not just Heinlein
@Yuushi I thought that you were talking about Iron Maiden for a while...
heh
Clifford Simak has wrote great SF books.
@Mat'sMug It could break before, and congratulations, BTW.
14:43
@NiallSzalkai well you asked for it... here's your lection for learning OOP the hard way...
