@BenVlodgi can you explain that again differently? sounds like you just want to run a query in something like SSMS and look at all the columns?
I would like to be able to do this
Person myPerson = SELECT TOP 1 * FROM People Where ID = 20
if myPerson.Age > 60
SET @Anomaly = 'Too old'
else
if(myPerson.Height > 10)
SET @anomaly = 'Too Tall'
--The above is psuodo code, of what I mean
This isn't in .Net
this is SQL logic =\
Temp Table? Variable Table?
is that what I'd have to do
because I'm just describing the logic I want
20:06
Temp Table would fit I think.
I always have to look up the syntax and try to remember which is better and why, between Table Variable and Temp Table
right now I am doing this

IF(EXISTS(SELECT * FROM schema.People WHERE ID = 20 AND Age > 60)
SET @Anomaly = 'Too Old'
or a UDF so you can call it with whatever ID or Parameter you like
feels wrong because I have to do that select where ID = 20 multiple times
a temp table sounds right, I was just wondering if there was something I was completely missing
yeah you want your Temp table to hold this "SELECT * FROM schema.People WHERE ID = 20"
20:09
and then run everything else off the Temp Table
okay, thanks will do
you should ask....... @rolfl or @200_success
they know more about SQL than I do
ohrly?
that is what @rolfl does all day I think....
You think wrong .... but there was a time .... ;-)

Is it considered acceptable to put pretty much an entire project into a question here? I don't have a specific thing I'm looking for help with, I pretty much just want to say "I'm new at this, how do I make my program better?".
Acceptable ... but, there is a 30K limit on the question size.
It's not a very large project, so that should be fine. Thank you :)
You will likely get better answers also if you can narrow down your concerns to special places.....
THe better you are able to phrase/present your question, the better(more useful) the answers will be...
@undergroundmonorail We've converted you!
So I have to ship servers on Friday with software I have not finished writing. Not only have I not finished writing it, it needs to be tested... oh boy
20:16
> ot only have I not finished writing it, it needs to be tested..
@syb0rg Nah, code golf is still my one true love. I just believe that golfers and people who care about their code not being terrible can live in harmony, and dabble in the other practice occasionally. :P
Post the code here, and say it 'was peer reviewed' ... before shipping... ;-0
7
@rolfl Thats pretty much what is going to happen.
Finish friday, ship em out... then take my vacation, and not answer the phone while they try to install those puppies and nothing works =\
Ahhh... the good old commit&dash ... I like it!
Then come back like a savior and blame it all on the controls guys
;)
that is honestly what is going to happen, I'm leaving friday for vacation
20:19
@Mat'sMug, you just said what I said without the code and then asked a bunch of questions.....codereview.stackexchange.com/a/47822/18427
@undergroundmonorail I guess I'm guilty of code golfing occasionally too:

A: Sort-a-number. Sorta

syb0rgC - 64 characters, 64 points main(int a,char**b){b++;qsort(*b,strlen(*b),1,strcmp);puts(*b);} You might wonder how I get this to work without any headers. Simple, compile with: gcc -include stdio.h stdlib.h string.h test.c -o test --std=gnu11 -Wall -g -O3 Un-golfed: #include <stdio.h> #i...

trying to steal my votes huh, @Mat'sMug?
I just posted a question on StackOverflow. I don't know whether my code is wrong or whether there are bugs in both g++ 4.8.1 and clang++ 3.5 :D

Q: Unexpected result when trying to compose a curried lambda with another lambda

MorwennI am toying with C++11 lambdas and was trying to mimick some function from the functional module of the D programming language. I was actually trying to implement curry and compose. Here is the main that I am trying to get working: int main() { auto add = [](int a, int b) { retur...

@Morwenn I hope you don't mind me adding a test case :)
@syb0rg That's fine. And it comfort me in the idea that this might be a compiler bug :)
Actually, I hope that it is a compiler bug :D

Compiler bugs on SO = lotsa rep.
thought we didn't like EXample code?

Q: Can this architecture of base + derived classes be coded more efficient?

Mike de KlerkI've got some architecture in my code similar to this. It is about the Construct method in the base class in the example below. This method contains the logic for constructing a building, which is the same in every building. Yet different buildings may want to do things differently, like a differ...

@Malachi We don't, good catch.

Q: Fetch images from an array of URLs and upload to S3

user11165I'm uploading arrays of image URLs to save to S3. The code works, but it is not executing asynchronously. Time stamping to the console appears to show that first all the images are fetched and buffered, and then they are sequentially saved to S3. I ran an array of 100 images, and the first imag...

@konijn Nice comment ;)
@Morwenn Yeah, I saw that in the comments.
@BenVlodgi Looks like you're going to be patching after shipping.
Good uses of temporary tables are rare, I think. Try views or Common Table Expressions first.
2
@syb0rg Yeah, I felt bad for the guy.. Though I hope by now his problem is solved ;)
@200_success I always forget about views.
@200_success aren't they similar to Temp Tables though?
not going to post it, but...
20:57
Temp tables involve writing something out — even if it's not to disk, you'd still be writing to an in-memory I/O buffer.

@200_success and a view doesn't exist until you call it?
A view is just a canned query.
I was hoping to kill this highly-voted zombie by putting a bounty on it, but that has only attracted another upvote.

Q: How can I make my stack monad faster?

Steven Stewart-GallusI made a stack monad that lets one manipulate and control values on a stack. Whoa, avatars aren't network-wide?
I'm not Lazy Cat on CR????
Much better. :)
Also, the avatar in chat can take some time to refresh after a site-update.
@undergroundmonorail Sadly, I am out of votes. It looks like a good question.
Now, we have cats, fish, monkeys, rabbits, bees, and more.
@syb0rg Thanks, I was worried I screwed it up somehow :P

It's been Jamalized now, you're good.
Oh, nevermind, I found the edit history
Also, the meme:

Mat's MugMeme: Jamalized Originator: Jamal ♦ (actually, apparently me) Cultural Height: All over CR (see this chat transcript search) Background: Jamal being a frantic editor. And he's fast. So fast, we're all waiting for the day he will edit a bad question title before it's even posted. You never know...

I am somewhat obsessive when it comes to editing out noise (or what I consider noise).
Yeah, so far the edits to the question have been "adding tags that I didn't know would be relevant because I need to lurk moar" and "fixing the title. why did i even think that would be a good title. wtf, me."
We naturally have a tough time with titles. We're so lucky to not yet have titles like "C++ linked list implementation #455"
And don't get me started on linked lists...

Welcome back @BlueBug
And @ChrisW
aye hi syb0rg : )
Hey @palacsint
@BlueBug So are you going to post some code to review, or become a reviewer?
prob post my code to be reviewed but that sounds scary. I am less confident with my code. Ahhhh. Low self esteem when it comes to quality of my code.
It's okay, my code is terrible. :)
hehehe.
22:05
And I mean, literally the whole point of this site is to make code better. If code is good, that's hard, but the people here would have a field day with terrible code! It'd be like a breath of fresh air! (I'm assuming that's how it works.)
2
And posting your terrible code and getting it reviewed is how you learn.
2
true true. I will post some code once I choose clear direction on this thing that I am working on ; I am doing some Unity game stuff and trying to find best approach for 2D fluid with plane shader applied.
: D
@BlueBug It sounds like you are doing some pretty advanced stuff.
more advanced than what I can handle, must be, since I am struggling a lot.
but challenge are the only stairs that can be climbed to reach higher <3
