actually there is a second comment that suggests migration to CR:..

@duffymo also applies - thanks! — retailcoder 6 secs ago
Are we an annoying bunch that keeps pinging SO's high-rep users to tell them to RTFM on CR? ...and is this a bad thing?

@Mat'sMug Has anyone told us that we're an annoying bunch yet?

not yet, but I can feel it coming
no CR account either

Until they learn, keep 'annoying' them

I'd imagine we're being just like Programmers back then, which is a good thing.

5:08 PM
Or like these very same people way back when, on SO, slapping people with RTFM comments

gotta love RTFM comments ...

5:24 PM
@Jamal should I edit the [Common Coding Issues - C#] question? I'm not crazy about having a [On Hold] question in my list...
(granted, I shouldn't have jumped the gun here)

@Mat'sMug I suppose so. I'm still not sure how the community wants to handle these questions.

Q: Speed up my Google Apps Script for finding empty days on multiple calendars

MarcelaI need help with a simple Google Apps Script I've written. The script finds days on which no all-day events have been scheduled, across multiple calendars. I'm fairly certain the main issue is the fact that I'm making an API call to get all owned calendars, then I'm making 5 API calls on each of...

I'd suggest making one question per issue, which has the "correct" answer, and put em all together in one meta-question

I think the consensus is that 1) it belongs on the main site, 2) it should be formed as an on-topic question with one specific coding issue, and 3) it should be answerable by anyone, self-answer is ok, and top-voted gets the checkmark.
@Vogel612 not meta (oh the irony!)

nononoono
make a list of links... (on meta.)
that put em all together was lost in translation

5:29 PM
right, if you want - there was also a suggestion to add it in the language tag's wiki.. which makes sense too

well then all the more we should have one link-list question...
because then the tag-wiki is way less cluttered..
well TTQW

Oh Crap, Guava's EventBus system is not supported in GWT, and neither is my event system that I have made.

@Jamal the only thing that annoys me is the amount of existing upvotes and fav-stars... should I care?

Probably not.

Hmm I can edit it, but I can't post an answer until it's reopened. Would it be best deleted and started over with?
Like, I'd make it like this:
Leaky Abstractions
I have this interface for a *Unit of Work*, are there any issues with it?

    public interface IUnitOfWork : IDisposable
    {
        void Commit();
        void Rollback();
    }
And the answer would be like what I've posted in the first part of this answer

5:39 PM
@Mat'sMug And the place to put links to them is in the tag wiki for that language

@ChrisW I agree with that

And me too .... (and I believe 200_success suggested that first ... ;-) )

@ChrisW what about things that are somewhat language-agnostic, like refactoring a monster switch block? Should we have one post per language?

yes
Java people tend not to have the same crappy code as C#, so there's no need for that sort of thing ... ;-)
2

5:55 PM
@rolfl that's discrimination against the poor C# developers..

not really, those are the only types of C# developers ;-)

deleted the [On Hold] one, posted this:

Mat's MugI have this interface for a Unit of Work, are there any issues with it? public interface IUnitOfWork : IDisposable { void Commit(); void Rollback(); }

@Jamal can you wikify?

@StackExchange damn that was fast!

Done

5:59 PM
@Mat'sMug The other suggestion was to wait until there's a real-world problem which demonstrates a problem, and provide a canonical answer to that (instead of inventing sample problems).

@rolfl I was wondering, you said Watson is using old legacy Eclipse plugins, but you also code in Java 8, how is taht working together?

If it's truly a frequent (FAQ) problem there then won't be long to wait (for a real problem to be posted). Or post a canonical answer to an existing question.
"Refactoring a monster switch block" ... there are near-infinitely many ways to write a 'bad' program (many problems). So answer them just-in-time.
... when there's a real OP who needs a good answer.

@Mat'sMug - @ChrisW @Jamal - @All:
I edited the [C\# wiki](http://codereview.stackexchange.com/tags/c%23/info) to represent what I thought would be a decent system for these reference questions.

@ChrisW I'm not crazy about using existing real people's posts for wiki. Might as well completely drop the idea of and instead create a directory of "best questions & answers"

meh

6:03 PM
Frequantly?

That can easily be undone if there's diputes.....
Fix it!
That's the whole point.

done
@rolfl I agree with that - was the whole idea behind "jumping the gun"

@skiwi - I see the Dutch have decided to continue their record-breaking sporting achievements: bbc.com/sport/0/cricket/26720373
@skiwi As for the eclipses, I was also saying I have 4 different eclipse versions installed on my machine (some of them are different installs of the same version).

@rolfl We don't hear an ything about those sports appereantly
I more meant, do you not use Java 8 for parts of projects requiring you to use those plugins?

No, I have only installed the Java8 for my own education and CR work.

6:15 PM
Ah ok
That might explain everything

Also, the plugins I am talking about are internal IBM plugins that link in to specialized external systems.
Remember that Eclipse started off as an IBM tool... which it donated.... (mostly).

I didn't know that, didn't dive into the history there
Are you also all running with those huge bulky Leveno Thinkpads?
(For the ones with a laptop)

In computer programming, Eclipse is an integrated development environment (IDE). It contains a base workspace and an extensible plug-in system for customizing the environment. Written mostly in Java, Eclipse can be used to develop applications. By means of various plug-ins, Eclipse may also be used to develop applications in other programming languages: Ada, ABAP, C, , COBOL, Fortran, Haskell, JavaScript, Lasso, Perl, PHP, Python, R, Ruby (including Ruby on Rails framework), Scala, Clojure, Groovy, Scheme, and Erlang. It can also be used to develop packages for the software Mathematic...
@skiwi everyone has laptops. Most of us are on fairly beefy ones (development people are). e.g. My laptop is 16Gig 4core (8 with HT), and SSD). Lenovo W530
A number of people have macs.

And I guess if you were to use a non-Eclipse IDE at IBM that things would be... bad?

I used to run Linux on my laptop, but I recently swapped to windows... I am doing more Powerpoint work than I want, and my VM was shot.
@skiwi e can use anything we can justify, and license.

6:19 PM
So it is the bulky one, I think I have the Lenovo W540 from University (special offer), they at least will not break down.

I have visual-studio on my machine for GPU work, for example.

GPU work sounds very interesting, which leads me to think
Do you prototype GPU applications in multithreaded Java for example?
Because GPU programming is quite abstract and very hard to debug in my opinion, for OpenCL, etc.

Yeah, I have been playing around with some things (part of my job), but, let me point you to this: www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/41684.wss
Can't say much more.

The yeah was in reply to prototyping in Java for example?
I'm really wondering what path I need to take to end up in interesting companies.

I believe this is back on topic

Q: Better Way for PHP Array Offset Without Losing Values

@Vogel612 yeah, but I always forget the syntax (thanks rolfl), but I really just was in a hurry, and since I had VTC I wanted to let know the OP about the off-topicness

I just spent about 10-20 minutes thinking about why my own shuffle method didn't work, because I've just copied it from the Collections.java source (GWT doesn't include the shuffle method, that's why). I think I found the answer now...
 private static void swap(Object[] arr, int i, int nextInt) {

@SimonAndréForsberg - I have been impressed with many of the features, but, working for IBM is a problem in that respect ... IBM Java8 will be on a different timeline.

@rolfl Can you tell us why they don't switch to Java 8?
Is it because they're afraid people like @skiwi will find bugs in it?

8:32 PM
They will switch, and in fact there is an active beta, but IBM is not targeting the same market segments that Orace/OpenJDK are after...

Does IBM still publish its own JVM these days?

very much so.

Oh, didn't know they had their own JVM... that explains it.

IBM isn't exactly known for using bleeding-edge technology either.

8:34 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg - the IBM JDK provides support for other platforms, as well as the regular Windows and Linux. (IBM gives you AIX and Mainframe too, as well as some lesser known ones).
IBM also tends to throw in some custom extras.... and some other things that come up... for example, the packed-object support in the beta is interesting to me.

31-bit IBM System z, What sorcery is that?

@rolfl If they'd do Android and GWT, then I'd be very interested :)

@skiwi System Z really is sorcery....

But for Android and GWT, the problem doesn't lie in the JVM exactly I'd say :(

That likely won't happen. Remember that android is neither Java nor GWT... ;-)
(it just happens to use Java as (one of) the interface language).

8:39 PM
I wonder, how did you end up at IBM? :o
And more interesting for me personally, how can I end up at a company doing interesting stuff?

IBM Java will compile Java to byte-code that is compatible with all the othr JVM's. What IBM really offers is platform support on different platforms, some optimizations that are more specific to certain hardware, and different/better support tools.
@skiwi - IBM employs 450,000 people... it is more than just 'a company doing interesting stuff'.

Nice @SimonAndréForsberg, you are sticking to GWT there?

@rolfl lol, depends on what we're playing. Perhaps I should put the cards into my old Poker Hand Evaluator?

Sure!

@Mat'sMug I sure hope to be able to post it within the month, I have some code from before that I am able to use for this.

8:44 PM
@200_success thx:)

@skiwi I sure am sticking to GWT, I figured that's what will be the most usable for others. (i.e. Android deviced, Windows users, Linux users, heck - even iPhones...)
Unfortunately I can't use Java 8... but I swear, once Java 8 works with GWT... nomnomNOMNOM...!

I wonder if it's possible to fully embed a JVM in a website?
Or does it default to webstart jars then, which are frowned upon...

TTGH

So today I attempted a answer, but my knowledge of C is quite limited. I'd be thankful for a review of the review, to prevent me from spreading misinformation.

@skiwi At work I'm using webstart... but then again... I'm frowning regularly at work
@skiwi No, it's not really possible to fully embed a JVM in a Website... at least not that I know of...
@amon Just the 'A word of warning: I am very much a C newbie myself, so it may be good to take my advice with a grain of salt.' warning deserves a +1 by itself :)

9:01 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg if you're insane enough you could probably compile a JVM to javascript via Emscripten. But why on earth would you do that

@amon I have no plans to. I think I'll stick to GWT for now :)
I think it should be theoretically possible to add some kind of backwards compatibility though, so that one can write Java 8 code and it would get compiled as Java 6 so to speak... I mean, it all ends up as bytecode and the bytecode hasn't changed, right?

It has I think for lambdas @SimonAndréForsberg
they added some invoke method in Java 7 vs 6 and that one is getting used for their new Javascript Nashorn engine if I"m correct
Darn, I literally cannot write about maxing out rep on a site without letting people think it's a Santa-attempt, which it is not.
The last link surely is an interesting read, but not for today.
