Q: Is this correct for hashing a password?

James WilsonDoes this look like a good method to hash a user password. I'm not very familiar with how this whole hashing process works and below is a bunch of stuff I've seen on many different posts. My main concern are all of the numbers. Do they all need to match? do they need to match something like t...

RE: "Not all of our answers have to hit everything that is wrong with the code." This was something that I didn't grok when I looked over the site last week. I really wanted to provide an answer or two, but the urge to provide a comprehensive answer (or none at all) was overwhelming. It might be helpful if site regulars led by example and started answering unanswered (meaning no answers at all) in this way. (N.B. I looked at Perl and Lua questions, which are probably minorities here. That might be a different problem than what one might see on more popular tags.) — Jon Ericson Nov 15 '13 at 21:01
@Amon that was for you ▲▲▲▲
So, just add what we can?
@AlexL yeah. if you have more to add later then edit it into the code
@AlexL and welcome, I don't believe that I have seen you here before
@Malachi There are only two unanswered Perl questions, and I don't know any Lua
@amon I didn't mean about the Lua or Perl questions. I meant about the conversation that you and @Jamal were having earlier

This is off-topic, OP is asking for code to be written:

Q: Simple tax return program

user3255517The overall program I have to do is a simple tax return. Add wages, interest, dividends, and other income. Deduct $2,800 for each dependent. income = wages + interest + dividends + other income - (number of dependents * 2800) I have that and that part is good. Now after I get that, I ask ...

"How would I start? Just a tip where to begin."
@amon about the whole too many answers thing, I do believe that @ChrisW went a little overboard, but I think he has the idea of cleaning them up later, or merging a couple of them together, so that the ones that are most alike will be merged together, but that having multiple answers is ok
@Malachi Thanks! Yeah I joined about a month ago, but I just got to chat a day or so ago
@AlexL glad to have you aboard.
I have to get Back to Work (BTW) but I am sure I will chat with you later, or star something that you say in the future
@Malachi ah, thanks for the context. Well, I don't mind 2 answers per person either, e.g. when they both cover separate topics that could stand alone. This is of course not the case with single-line answers. My comment has been acknowledged by @ChrisW, so I guess he'll clean up when he finds the time (Weekend is coming :-) )
@amon I totally agree

Q: How can I fix my code to properly implement the Strategy Pattern?

erotavlasI'm having a problem adapting the strategy pattern to my code. Here is an example console application or how I want to structure my code. But I'm not sure of several things. Basically, I know the strategy pattern goal is to simplify and help also eliminate the need to if else case switch stru...

Q: Abstract Factory or Inversion of Control Pattern?

user2608193I have several generic methods that use the typeof operator to determine the type of mapper class to create. Eventually this is going to get out of hand. Can anyone suggest a better way to handle this? I have been reading up a bit and it seems like an abstract factory pattern or IOC would be a...

Q: Setting up keyboard bindings using JSON (no reflection!)

davidkennedy85I got a lot of good feedback on my other question. So I will take another swing at it, post my revisions, and hopefully get some more. First, the configuration hasn't changed. Here's the JSON file: { "DisplaySettings": { "IsFullScreen": false, "PreferredBackBufferWidth": 800, "Pre...

Q: How can I shorten an if statement?

Ryan Harperstr, ski = int(input("text here")), int(input("text here")) if str < 1 or str > 50 or ski < 1 or ski > 50: print("did not enter between 1 and 50") Is there anyway to shorten the if statement in that code? I find that it is a bit too long, but I don't really know how to shorten it. ...

Feel I have earned some 'eyes on' this:

Q: Returning all the LIS of given array of int

iSoulI have this assignment where I'm supposed to code an algorithm for finding the quantity of Longest Increasing Subsequences from an array of (different) integers and print them all. I developed one which always gives me the right answer, but I have 2 issues with it: It's a little slow When the ...

g'afternoon
@nhgrif Hello.
Hi there!
Hey @Jamal
22:55
Hey!
Banana?
Yes, please!
nhgrif has some in his icon ... ;)
bye
@200_success: If he wanted more rep, he could've asked Santa. He could've at least expanded on those answers or combine the one-lined ones into one answer.

So today was trash day. Today, the wind is also blowing with speeds up to 40mph.
My trash bin is gone.
Where do you live? (state-wise)
Nvm, I could just look at your profile.
Wow... what an interesting comment for someone posting on code review:
Thanks, but this did not work. Also, I put str because I couldn't be bothered to type up strength :) — Ryan Harper 10 mins ago
Do Python IDEs not code-complete?
Turns out I did bring him back:
Seen 22 hours ago.
Yet, no accept.
:(
I thought that was one of my better answers too.
@200_success What do you think of setting a pointer to NULL right after you free() it?
23:16
@syb0rg Probably a good idea, to prevent double-free faults.
Is this question actually on topic? He's asking about design patterns. There's no actual code:

Q: Sample design Oauth2.0 flow

Kermit the FrogI have the following code that I hope developers will use. [LKOauth showLogin: self data: data success: ^(NSString * code) { NSLog(@"%@", code); } cancel: ^(void) { // user canceled } failure: ^(NSError * ...

@200_success And possible the re-usage of the free'd item.
@nhgrif Nope, it's off-topic.
@syb0rg Neither double-free nor reuse are entirely preventable, though. There may be other copies of the pointer that still exist.
@200_success Good point. I'll keep this in mind for future reviews.
@Jamal That question does illustrate my point that it takes a genius to write a C++ library.
23:24
@200_success: I would never attempt it anyway. :-) Same with a compiler.
I think I've found another purely design question:

Q: Template parameter used for configuration of classes

GabrielI am not sure if this good programming. I am not the well template programmer. I have a big simulation framework (rigid body simulation). And so far I have one special include file "TypeDefs.hpp" which only defines (prototypes) of all classes in the framework to be used as types as a hirarchica...

Q: Is the "vanilla" implementation of TodoMVC really an MVC app?

oligofrenAs a learning process, I am trying to see how one best applies MVC in JavaScript without the use of a framework. As part of this process, I have been looking into TodoMVC, as it has a bunch of different implementations of the same small app, one of which is in vanilla javascript (meaning no extra...

And this got me thinking...
Perhaps we should keep those three tags intact, while going through them and closing the off-topic ones?
You know... orbital rendezvousing is hard...
Kerbal?
Yep.
I have a 6.1km intersect in 22 minutes. Should be able to hook up there.

I need to focus on physics homework, and stop being distracted by Stack Exchange. :P
