8:00 PM
I use half of them on a daily basis.
At least, that's what it feels like.

@Mast There is one with link to SO.

@sineemore That one is probably part of the half I don't use then.
I comment like Jamal edits, so I don't really keep track.

Oh, haven't seen that page in a while. I was referring to this.
Although finger memory has got a couple of others down which are based on the exact close reasons.
<close reason, first sentence in bold> Please take a look at the [help/on-topic].

Oh, those are Simon's stuff.

8:03 PM
I usually cut out all the "Unfortunately" and "I'm afraid" stuff though.
I'm not afraid and it's not unfortunate we don't tolerate crap.
Most of you are civilized enough to act the part.
Not me.

Just got an idea: is there a userscript for fullscreen answer editor?

@Mast Specifically this one:
If your code is not working correctly, it is off-topic for this site. You might try [Stack Overflow](stackoverflow.com/help/how-to-ask) if you can word the question in a way that fits the criteria on that page. Once your code works correctly, you're welcome to ask a new question here and we can then help you improve it!

@sineemore If that's what you want, use a real editor.

The broken code one--it points to the how to ask page on SO

@Phrancis I don't use that one.
It's better than pointing directly to SO, I'll give it that.
Much better.
The help page is exactly what they should look at should they want to post it there.
But it's still a redirect.
Which could be useful on some questions.

8:06 PM
And I'm careful to remove that part if I see the question wouldn't be good for SO either

Probably less than halve than what I encounter the comment on.
Perhaps it's not a lousy comment. It started out well. But it got abused.
Now it's a meh comment.
Does that make sense? @Phrancis

Q: Code style - how do I glue my modules together?

Shanee VanstoneI have modules that do things, for example a settings class and WiFi manager class. These are kind of re-usable (in theory). But then I struggle to work out where the "glue code" should go. For example, I have code that takes an SSID and password from the setting manager and then passes this t...

@CaptainObvious Bam.

@Mast Yes

@sineemore you can probably do a lot with some simple CSS changes

8:20 PM
Perhaps some people on the site make the assumption that broken code is automagically on-topic for SO

alternatively there's stackedit

@Vogel612, I'm on it right now)

@Phrancis Just like there's too many people on SO recommending CR the moment they see the word 'improve', regardless of whether there's any code or the quality of the question.

When you have a good answer. Submit for code review. codereview.stackexchange.comMartin York 10 secs ago

@Vogel612 what time zone are you in?

@Malachi MEST
why you ask?

@Vogel612 Do you mean stackedit.io ?

@sineemore yes

@Vogel612 we have Offshore people in Bulgaria
just curious
is it almost midnight there?

8:48 PM
should be, if not after. I don't know whether they're one or two hours ahead of me
you're probably better off asking sineemore about that :)

I am in CST -6 I think
it is almost 11 MEST
almost 4PM here
TTGH

@Malachi If you're in CT, then it should be CDT, UTC-0500 right now.

Maryville, TN is in the Eastern (daylight currently) time zone, according to online sources

Should be, all of TN should be EDT at the moment.
But I think @Malachi moved recently, so that's out of date. If it is 4PM for him, he'd bet CDT (I'm EDT and it's 5PM for me).

I am in Minnesota now.
whole thing is Central

9:01 PM
zoinks!

Yep, so CDT (UTC-0500), it'll be CST (UTC-0600) in a couple months.

I didn't know that half a Tennessee didn't participate in Daylights savings time

Samsonite! I was way off!

@Malachi If you don't participate in DST you don't count. ;)

9:13 PM
Yay timezones #fun

Q: I made a function to embolden parts of auto-complete suggestions that don't match the query, but I think it's probably the worst way to do it

Don't KnowAs the title says, I made a function to embolden text that doesn't match a string, but it appears to be very performance-heavy. I am certain that there are much better ways to do this, but with what I tried, I ran into a lot of trouble. As a side note, one of the ways I know this is performance-...

Yay octothorpes

9:28 PM
@SamOnela octowat?

possible answer invalidation by Deduplicator on question by R. Bajaj: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/187167/revisions

@Duga it's fine, just added Mathjax formatting

@Phrancis it is another name for a hash tag / pound symbol

@SamOnela Ahh OK. Pretty obscure lol. #hashtags

9:45 PM
I thought I read about it here but apparently it has been 2+ years since it was visible (in the singular form)

Q: React widget to display, sort and search remote data

J.McLarenI've created a React widget that pulls data on cryto-token pairs from a remote API and makes that data sortable by headers and searchable. You can view it here: https://chinapalace.github.io/cryptoWidget/ import React, { Component } from "react"; import { Table, Segment, Header, Divider, Input...

Q: binary search tree traversal and depth first search in python

NinjaGI am learning about the tree traversal, and I would like to ask for feedback. Using recursion, write a function that takes in a binary search tree and # outputs a list of values ordered by DEPTH FIRST traversal, PRE-ORDER, In-Order, Post-Order. # PRE-ORDER # # Input: node {TreeNode} # ...

10:58 PM
@Vogel612 and @Mast: SESE should be fixed within the next hour.

Q: Making a Qt wrapper, unsure of naming conventions or if it's too un-pythonic

PeterAs I'm sure a lot of you are aware, the layout files generated for Qt look quite horrible. Maya had a wrapper that let you indent each widget when building manually, so I decided to have a try with context managers. I'm looking for a bit of feedback before I get much further. To start with I tri...

Q: Convert string of hex into vector of bytes

Ta Thanh DinhI want to write a function that gets a string of hex numbers (two hex numbers represent a u8 value) then returns a vector of u8 values, e.g. the string 1f 0a d1 should be converted into [31, 10, 209]. The input string may contains non hex characters, then the function must be able to filter these...

bingewatching anime until early in the morning :D

11:02 PM
@Vogel612 I don't know what that is, so...congrats? Lol

anime fans are often called weebs

Also you'll love it: SESE is broke because of some sort of off-by-one error.
2
@Vogel612 That clears it up.
Wow
Easiest fix
Oh shoot
WHat's the password
Fuuuuu
HOLY CRAP I GOT IT ON THE FIRST GUESS
Good news: fixed the error
Bad news: something else is broke.
Ahah
I know what broke
Damn disk was full

11:19 PM
darn disks being not big enough

Yep
It does a nightly backup of the database and that blew the disk up

@202_accepted Why do you need so many backups?

@Phrancis Before it copies the stage database to prod it does a backup.
It's a safety net
Oh FFS Visual Studio...

@202_accepted Maybe you ought to setup some kind of email alert to let you know when the disk is nearly full?

I do, I never check that email box because it has 14k spam emails in it
From 6 months
It's been sending me emails hourly for the last month+...lol

11:37 PM
Reminds me of a previous job where they completely abused sp_send_dbmail

I need to find a better way to do this transfer too...

I didn't know until then that Outlook had a limit on the number of filters you can have lol
Ended up writing a VBA script to keep my inbox sane

I usually filter the good emails out of my inbox.
