I disagree. It should stay closed.

I just OCD-edited the tag in anyway

Zak
@Mat'sMug Also from experience: Sometimes you have to really hit us over the head with social rules. Especially at that age.

@Zak the kick-mute was just a message. a clear one. and the 1-minute ban has long elapsed now...

I agree the question should stay closed.
It's a discussion piece.
I think the kick-mute was justified. We've told the user many, many times and gone over it quite extensively in Nth monitor.

It should possibly be migrated.
But I'm not sure it's a good question on Programmers in it's current state.

3:03 PM
I appreciate your perspective, @Zak, but we'd already given him enough allowances. It's not a permanent thing. It's just a bit firmer than "Hey, stop doing this" - which we'd said several imes.

It's an answerable question, but it's not a good CR question.

I'm pretty sure I told that user 3-4 times in as many days that 2nd isn't a helpdesk.

@Zak A 1-minute ban is quite effective at hitting one over the head ^^

lol

@DanPantry Yup, and you weren't the only one.

3:04 PM
@Mast True (though i didn't want to speak for anyone else).
I didn't kick-mute him because it would've been my first kick-mute and I would rather have asked a mod in a priv chat ahead of time.
Unfortunately I do not have the powers to create a private chat :(

@DanPantry Listen Dan, with your new powers come new responsibility. We all respect that you're trying to be careful. But those powers have been given to you for a reason. We expect you to use them. We expect you to make mistakes. Go ahead.
Don't keep second guessing yourself.

@Phrancis unselecting is in the menu behind that address bar

@Mast Will do. Sorry, sometimes I need a kick up the butt too :)

@DanPantry /kicksbutt

you see the blue strip? there's an x in that strip a bit further up

@Mat'sMug No, it brings up the message in the chat search, highlighted in yellow (just like when you click permalink).

3:08 PM
aw

There may be a way to tap-hold and copy it, but I have not found it yet

so then you copy the url from the address bar and nav back

Yeah

fair enough
@Mast deciding when to kick is very hard when you've never done it before

@Mat'sMug I know, I do have some moderator experience on multiple platforms.

3:10 PM
OK... the chat prototype is very buggy

hence "prototype"

Anyways, good move Mug

I've had my load of bad moves lately

@Mat'sMug isn't a human, he's a mug. And mugs are capable of making mistakes too ;-)

Mugs make mistakes?

I'm trying to be funny.
:(
It's not working.

@DanPantry it's okay, you're allowed mistakes too ;-)

Um. Does SSMS do caching or something? I updated a row using our client application, then selected the row in SSMS and the update is not showing, even though it is showing in the app

3:15 PM
Exactly.
Wasn't that the whole point?

@Phrancis SSMS is just another SQL client AFAIK

Nevermind. I was selecting from the wrong table (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Q: An efficient alternative to multiple if statements

miqdadamiraliI am calculating the number of people within a given age range. This is my current approach. Note: The persons is a List<Person> The getDiffYears() returns the number of years between now and DOB of the person. It includes the month and day as well. The method will be returning a HashMap<Strin...

@CaptainObvious ouch

3:17 PM
ok, I'll stop

This is a good point about QML integration, but unfortunately the model in that example doesn't really behave like a model, because Calendar already has its own model (for days in the month). Instead, it just gets a list of events (a QList<QObject*> model). It was recently changed to simply be a QObject because of this fact: codereview.qt-project.org/#/c/145253Mitch 56 secs ago

Stop asking questions.

You're okay to ask questions. As long as they're related to the 2nd monitor or code review.
If they aren't related to the site, they probably don't belong here.
If in doubt, consult Google first.
That, by the way, is also very helpful advice for when you get a job :-)

But... actually, why was I kicked?

Who would want to help me complete the documentation?

3:20 PM
You continued asking off topic questions, despite being asked several times. Also, you were behaving like a help vampire.

@DanPantry Yet again the only reason I want to answer a non Python question is because there are way too many if statements.

@SuperBiasedMan The command pattern is so fun!

I, erm.... uh, have to complete the documentation, know?

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this is a code review question — Jan Dvorak 35 secs ago

Nevermind
I just gtg now.

Zak
3:21 PM
@Gustavo6046 Sure, but asking us to do your work with/for you is not an appropriate topic for this room.

I will return once documentation is complere.

You're welcome to stay, @Gustavo6046, as long as you stay on topic.
We want you here. :) we just want to keep on topic as well.

@DanPantry Forget command pattern (which I'm not very familiar with) they just need an array and some maths.

@DanPantry +1^

3:24 PM
I need a bigger screen. I can't see the star wall because of how many rooms I'm in.

@DanPantry So get one.

@Mast Unfortunately, it's my work laptop that's the problem :(

Or tilt your screen. Makes it longer.

I have 2x 1080p at home, but my work laptop is 720p and has like 1330 or something pixels in height

You could also leave a few rooms. Or, join those you don't care as much about in a different browser

3:28 PM

@Mast LOL

LOL

I might be looked at a bit strangely if I did that

It works.

Someone has a monitor like that permanently downstairs so they can easily consult a production schedule. It looks weird.
Especially cause it's a super wide screen (not sure of the actual resultion, but it's wide).

3:29 PM
@SuperBiasedMan I tried that for writing code once...

There are a few people at my work who have a monitor that way too

it was an interesting idea, but IDEs don't really support it well in java

I remember when I was 16, I accidentally set a monitor of a computer that I wasn't meant to be on to portrait resolution using the windows keys
I freaked out because I didn't know what key combo I pressed and couldn't switch it back
My uncle was very confused when he got back to his desk and saw his monitor was in the wrong orientation lol
To this day I still don't know what key combination I pressed

best work pranks: invert monitor orientation, screenshot, change the background, move all desktop icons and done
@DanPantry windows + arrow-key should do it

3:32 PM
@Vogel612 Yeah.. I just found that out the hard way

Oops, accidentally deleted my documentation, I won't start all again, and I won't document this time! (don't star this :P)

@CaptainObvious Yes, definitely.
@Gustavo6046 Never write documentation if you can write code instead.

@Mast I want to disagree with you. But holy crap what he has done is bad.

@Vogel612 uh, I use Windows+ArrowKey all the time to dock windows left & right, maximize and minimize

I was manually documentating because Doxys generate a bunch of files and to upload it to Github it takes enough time and CPU for my PC to overheat.

3:34 PM
@Gustavo6046 You're fixing the wrong problem.

I would be surprised if your PC overheated from generating documentation or uploading stuff to Github.

@Mat'sMug hmm.. AltGr + Arrow then?

@Vogel612 windows + alt + arrow.

@DanPantry I totally knew that!!! :)

An aluminium plate beneath a laptop works.

3:35 PM
just tried that windows + arrow technique and now I'm feeling as if I was drunk :P

windows + arrow is going to move windows across your screen
Is this person asking for a code review or asking for a solution to a performance problem?
Because to me it seems like the latter.

windows + G in Windows 10 opens Game menu

(And is there a difference?)

you can record videos FOR FREE with it.

So?

3:37 PM
videos = perfect way of crashing hard disk with Gigabytes

Well, one of the close reasons is "Not asking for a code review", so I'm just touching base as to whether this is a good topic or not

Note that reviewers are free to address any & all aspects of the code on this site. Also, feel free to edit your post and embed a stack snippet (Ctrl+M), that will make the code executable on-site ;-) — Mat's Mug ♦ 5 secs ago

@Mat'sMug ty :)

we'll find out

At least my 297GB HD...

3:38 PM
@Gustavo6046 when site stuff is being discussed could you keep the idle chatter to a minimum? At least until it's resolved. Site business always comes first :)

Ok.
What are you guys discussing about the site?

@Gustavo6046 we were discussing the topicality of a question

Some reviews of code contain improvements that may or may not improve the code's performance.
So it is unignorable that the topic isn't THIS bad, but I wouldn't feel bad if it were put on hold until the author decided to do something in respect to it.

That's true, but the OP was specifically asking for a performance review. If he is okay with receiving stuff that's not just on performance, then that's another question entirely. :)

looks like he's ignoring my comment though

3:41 PM
@Mat'sMug, who would ignore an comment that appeared highlighted in someone's inbox?

Zak
Just my $0.02: As long as the OP isn't specifically saying "I only want reviews about [thing]" then I wouldn't close the question.

Holy crap. His site is laggy as all hell.
I must have gone to the wrong place.

One not-so-mean solution would be ignoring what he said and reviewing his entire code, while still focusing a bit in performance issues.

we've done that before

@Gustavo6046 I agree. I don't think the lag of his website is specifically caused by anything he has written there.
And I don't think addressing the lag of his website in a review is really within scope of the question

3:44 PM
@DanPantry He just build a heavy site and is surprised it takes time to load.
Loading times mean nothing anymore to people.

Or migrate it to Stack Overflow; it's really laggy and it isn't acceptably laggy the way it is. IF it is a code problem, then it shouldn't be closed, but migrated to SO where they can resolve and discuss. I will not answer, however, because relatively to SO think of me as a dead man.

@Mast uBlock + my corporate proxy is blocking 33 things on that site..
@Gustavo6046 I don't think this is really on-topic for SO.
If OP has issues with performance in his code, then we'll spot them here

@Gustavo6046 No.

But if OP's question is "Why are there performance problems with my website", it's off-topic pretty much everywhere.

Even though, it is possible that the problem is that the webpage contain hazardous content, because even AVG Internet Security blocked me! :/

3:45 PM
I just declined a flag saying that's a SO question - for the record it's way too broad for SO, migration would no doubt be rejected

That was a referral from SO.

Anyway. If it is a virus, then the user should be kicked for trying to redirect users to hazardous content -- maybe even banned.

It's not a virus, @Gustavo6046.

@Gustavo6046 It's not a virus.

Your AVG has just detected that it has links to google analytics and squarespace.
Viruses don't work like that.
If OP was intentionally trying to spread hazardous content they would very likely be banned network wide, but I very much doubt that is what is going on here.

I said "IF (and really IF) it is a virus", not stating positively and factually about it.

3:47 PM
AVG is the virus haha

@Mat'sMug lol

All AV is a virus.

THAT should be starred instead :P

@Gustavo6046 You do realize you can star messages yourself?

Yes; I just starred it.
Anyway.
The star and flag icons are too small and too close together, I may accidentally flag a post instead of starring it.

sounds like the usual madness of cycling through the ever same 4 websites...

@Vogel612 I do the same thing with reddit, SO and my email website

Why does Duga replies to comments here? Just a normal question.
I mean, post them here*

She posts any comments that have a reference to Code Review.
It's a way of letting us spy on correct StackOverflow users before we get crap migrations, amongst other things

Zak
@Gustavo6046 @duga posts comments from Stack Overflow which reference our name in text or links or tags.
They are commonly SO users recommending somebody move a question here
