@EBrown What's wrong with LXDE?

@IsmaelMiguel I find it ugly.
Plus I have a custom theme for XFCE that I use.

It isn't bad
Oh

Just couldn't remember which of the two it was for.

@SimonForsberg is there a way to make that work on a website without markup?

Well, I use LXDE
Either on Ubuntu or Debian
Ubuntu is useless on a VM, if you don't install LXDE

8:06 PM
And you are entirely allowed to, but I don't like it. I personally find it ugly.

What's ugly about it?

I don't have to justify why I find it ugly. I just do.

I'm not asking why, but what
Or is it just "general"?
(Just curious. No holy war incoming)

Q: Reverse binary representation of an int (only significant bits)

InBetweenThis based on this question in StackOverflow. The accepted answer uses Convert.ToString(int, base) to get the binary string, reverses it and converts it back to int. Nice trick! I have very little experience with bit twidling (using Flags is about it :p ) so I decided to try and code the solutio...

@SimonForsberg Yeah, in fact. I have one unfinished dice roller phone app I never took time to finish

More suited for Code Review ? — ItachiUchiha 11 secs ago
@ItachiUchiha not really.. as of now this looks very much like pseudocode. Code Review does not review Design. it would be a different story if the code at /* code here */ were included. — Vogel612 27 secs ago

@Mat'sMug There's a typo on page 23 of C# In Depth (Third Edition).

this works - its a question for code review not here — Dagon 33 secs ago

@jonskeet @ManningBooks There's a typo in C# In Depth on page 23. You reference listing 1.22, but there isn't one; I think you meant 1.21.

A: Stack with Array

h.j.k.For starters, comment pairs such as //Constructor ... //End Constructor are redundant and actually makes the code a little harder to read. Your debugging statements can be better served using a standard logging library that lets you log statements categorized by severity, e.g. org.slf4j.Logger....

9:12 PM
@EBrown hoping to get 4th ed. for free? ;)
@SimonForsberg I'll make one

@Mat'sMug Make one what?

Oh.

one doesn't simply... outsmart Jon Skeet:
@EBrown8534 @ManningBooks Yup, noted already :) http://csharpindepth.com/ViewNote.aspx?NoteID=199

I need to make one for my resx editor sometime.
Hi, @200_success.

@Mat'sMug Damn he's fast too

@Malachi what do you mean, without markup?

You might want to generally consider asking similar questions at codereview.stackexchange. This is a smaller piece of code, so it's probably not a huge deal. — Andras Deak just now

@Mat'sMug it appears that the syntax for the shield is actually markup...I guess I could just make it a link in some form....

of course it's markup! the web is markup!

I haven't thought much about how to do it, it was more of a passing thought and I haven't actually looked into it yet
@Mat'sMug I meant like Github and SO markup
@Mat'sMug Obviously! lol
@Mat'sMug I was meaning like a way that I could insert a link in HTML rather than standard image/link markdown

ah

poof!

Hey, I have a C# question. Is anyone willing to help?
Well, okay, I'll ask anyways
Suppose I have the following generic method:
Foo Bar<Foo>()
{
    return Foo;
}
I want it to return the type Foo, but that doesn't work.
I've also tried:
return typeof(Foo);
How can I return the type Foo?
Is it possible?

Q: Stack implementation with templates

Savitra SapreI worked on my code a bit from the earlier post and was able to make it work. I am new to C++ so please be kind. I basically habe two questions apart from the peer review. When I use templates definitions in a header and just call it from source, it doesn't work. Why? To make it work using str...

> The C# typeof operator (GetType operator in Visual Basic, typeid operator in Visual C++) returns a Type object.

9:57 PM
the bird is right

thanks
although, if I assign the result of Bar to a variable, I seem to not be able to use it as the type for a different variable
odd

what the heck are you even trying to do?

elaborate
Oh. You're probably doing that thing people do

Q: Declare a variable using a Type variable

VaccanoI have this code: Type leftType = workItem[LeftFieldName].GetType(); I then want to declare a variable of that type: leftType someVar; Is that possible?

Right?

I'm.. not sure
Here's the relevant code:

That's exactly the same
And it's a bad thing

10:01 PM
why?
please elaborate, oh great see-sharp guru
right, nevermind
there's var for a reason

@JeroenVannevel That is some of the ugliest code I've seen in ages.

@Hosch250 Don't be mean to c#

@rolfl I'll bash it when I please.

@Hosch250 link?

10:20 PM
Sorry, I was in the shower
"bad thing" in the sense that your approach of thinking is wrong
and it won't compile
Why are you trying to enforce compile-time code when it's only generated at run-time?
Use Convert.ChangeType and Activator.CreateInstance where they apply

Looked interesting to me, so thought I'll share.
***Learn HTML5 Basics With This Epic Cheat Sheet***
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2015/09/learn-html5-basics-with-this-epic-cheat-sheet/

Nice, but I don't think you can learn a "language" just from a cheat sheet.

@Mat'sMug That's the idea.
@Mat'sMug Yeah look at those timestamps. Literally two minutes and he responded.

@EthanBierlein If you're already well versed in several languages, it might be a help.
But cheat sheets are not written for that audience

Ryan CobournPart of the code that controls the bullet movement is this: I believe this part is the problem. Do any of you know whats wrong?

@CaptainObvious delete

@EthanBierlein relax.
posts with that score vanish from the frontpage.
and they usually vanish from the active pages very quickly
then the roomba cleans them up
no need to slap and impale OP
slapping is a-okay though (?)

@Vogel612 When would you say delete votes should be used? (I'm asking for an opinion; I'm not prepared to contradict you).

10:46 PM
for low quality answers. Questions usually don't need it.
then again I'm more of a live and let live lately.
I understand why you guys nuked that question, but it was not much different from something like this
and that's still walking. behind bars, but walking

It seems that your code currently works, and you are looking to improve it. Generally these questions are too opinionated for this site but you might find better luck at CodeReview.SE. Remember to read their question requirements as they are more strict than this site. — Kyll 51 secs ago

@SirPython No. Broken code is VTC worthy, but not VTD.
If the OP is asking for a fix for the code, then it's VTM -> SO.

So what you're saying is that a program that once took up $10 worth of hard disk space now takes up about 30 cents worth of hard disk space? I find this hard to worry about. — Eric Lippert 9 hours ago

Huh? Link doesn't work.

Works for me
Try searching "library of babel" on google

Link doesn't work here either. Are you signed in?

That's... interesting
It doesn't have a sign-in system

11:19 PM
Grats @Jamal!

Well, tl;dr, it's essentially a "library" of anything that can ever be said with the 26 letters in the alphabet. Seriously, you could search something like "ethan bierlein ate salad on monday", and it would be in there.

Looks like I missed an exploding bear trap. Could have given the poor guy time to react...

@EthanBierlein Found it on Wiki.

If only I didn't have school to do.
I want to get my Roslyn fix working, work on RD and VSD, and write a blog series on WPF, featuring RPS with a GUI.

Looks like an SSL negotiation problem. Fails in Safari and with curl. Works in Firefox.

I'm using FF.

I'm using chrome

Works with chrome, with a delay

OK, working here now.

Well, I won't give it crap for taking a while to load. There are $10^{5000}$ "volumes" in it after all, and it has to generate them on-the-fly.
If I remember correctly

11:26 PM
If I was writing that code I would surely generate a search match somewhere.
I searched for "welcome to the archive of banff" and it found an exact match as the only words on a page.... suspicious

Scroll down
Example ^^
It also links to the "volume" that that text is contained in

That must be one hell of a cartesian product

It is my belief that the library is a simple pseudorandom generator.

it is

And when you search a phrase, it just takes your search and randomizes letters around it.

11:30 PM
That's a neat illusion

Go watch this video:
It's explained

So, I bet anyone here could write it just as good.

Start it at about 17:00

BTW.Groovy :)
Quick poll, I was just curious if non-Groovy coders here could tell me if they find this "dot syntax" style readable
def createUserDocument() {
    def dboBuilder = new BasicDBObjectBuilder()
        .start("user_name", userName)
        .add("password_hash", passwordHash)
        .add("date_created", dateCreated)
    dboBuilder
}

Builder pattern!
Yeah, that looks very similar to C#.

Am I accidentally using a good pattern?
(never looked into builder pattern)

LOL, that is the builder pattern.

OIC

The builder pattern is an object creation software design pattern. Unlike the abstract factory pattern and the factory method pattern whose intention is to enable polymorphism, the intention of the builder pattern is to find a solution to the telescoping constructor anti-pattern. The telescoping constructor anti-pattern occurs when the increase of object constructor parameter combination leads to an exponential list of constructors. Instead of using numerous constructors, the builder pattern uses another object, a builder, that receives each initialization parameter step by step and then returns...

11:49 PM
And also common in Java.... like, StringBuilder ;-)

I figured it would make sense to keep the builder object and just put more stuff in it, until it's ready to commit to the DB
Grumble grumble, can't get this method to work, I think I'll turn it into a Groovy Closure
Nope, still broken :|
