@EBrown oi wot m80?

@EthanBierlein I'm so confused.

aboot wot m8?

The guy in the IRC chat channel.
He is from the 2nd Monitor and watched us do the Horrific Injuries, which means he was there when it was created because his name was in the room.

Or actually, he could just have read the transcript and gone there.

I still have no idea who you're talking about

@EthanBierlein My IRC server.
Someone in it has the name "hello" and won't tell @Hosch250 who. :)

They know incognito.
They thought Rubberduck was the person and RubberDuck the program, but it is the other way around.

Ethen, I don't understand the distinction you were trying to draw between an IDE and a text-editor that can run a compiler. What do you think an IDE is?

@nhgrif Internet Disintegration Entity

Oh god, can I get back to you in a second @nhgrif? There's something I need to handle.

12:40 AM
Oh, and they know the Critter joke.

Okay, situation handled
@nhgrif I was under the impression that an IDE has the compiler/interpreter built in to the application, rather than the compiler/interpreter being an external program that a text editor runs.

By that definition, Visual Studio might be the ONLY IDE there is...
Because Microsoft distributes their own compiler for all of the languages vanilla Visual Studio supports.
Which is important to note, because you don't write C++ in Visual Studio. You write Visual C++.
Meanwhile, Xcode uses GCC to compile Objective-C/C/C++ stuff.
GCC is an extraordinarily common compiler and it is not Apple's.
But even then, the compiler that Visual Studio uses is cl.exe
It's not the same executable as visualstudio.exe (or whatever it is)
It opens a separate program to actually do the compilation)

I mean, even C# and friends use msbuild for compilation (and not visual studio).

1:00 AM
Congrats on finally finding that bug @Hosch250

2:50 PM
@EBrown I still don't really understand the point of interfaces

@EthanBierlein They are basically contracts.
If you multiple classes that you know you need to have the same methods/properties/events in, you declare an interface that specifies all those objects.

Right, I know that part, but why is that necessary?

It's not necessary I suppose, but it makes certain things easier.
For example, I have an interface that declares common things between all my Network Messages.
Which means that when I go to process those messages, I can declare a variable of the interface type, and assign a strong type to it, then I can call methods on the interface that are implemented in the other type.
public interface IMessageProcessor<T>
{
    ILogger Logger { get; }

    void ProcessMessage(T message);
}
That interface, for example, means that I can keep a list of IMessageProcessor<T> objects to work with them, without needing to call the strong type methods.
(Though, this one is not as useful as some.)

Ah
What's the need for the generic though? Couldn't you just use object?

Well I could, and it would work the same.
But I wanted to strongly-type that method, because I don't always use the interface.

2:57 PM
I see

interfaces guide you toward good information hiding. You should be able to work with an object through its interface methods, without knowing how those methods work. Ideally, all you should know about an object is its interface. You should not need to know its concrete class, and the concrete implementation of its methods.
In turn, information hiding leads to more flexibility. You can replace an object with a different implementation of the same interface, and the rest of the program doesn't need to change. Using interfaces everywhere gives you great modularity by having replaceable elements.
@EthanBierlein You lose type safety when you use object (the C# class, as Object in Java)

So I just had a (pretty bug) bug because of an abstract class...>.>

Q: Roman Numerals in Java

ambigram_makerI (rather hastily) put together a class that can convert to and fro from Roman Numerals and Decimals. I would appreciate critical points on everything, especially: Shortening my code. Choosing a better approach. Using better/new features of Java 8. And so on... I didn't bother to add JavaDoc...

There you go...

@ambigram_maker I built one of those a while back.

But, there are no unsupported numbers.

Well, Santa delivered.
Got a badge too.

@rolfl Can you suggest a good name for it (short but acceptable)? I decided to ditch is();

I need to figure something out for these damn messages.
Having a hell-of-a-time building a proper implementation for them.

Catching up. If it was me, I would create an enum for double comparisons. An enum of various types, like "exact", "absolute", "percent", etc.
hmmm, never mind, the absolute and percent differences will need an "acceptable" parameter.

4:54 PM
grr
Haskell is really annoying

I thought about an inner class Tolerance. It can be passed as a parameter to the varags methods.

Still, an interface with a method acceptable(double a, double b);
then, have different implementations of that interface, one like:

Great! Tolerance can be the interface.

tolerance is not just a double?

public class AbsoluteDifference implements DoubleComparer {
    private double tolerance;
    ....
    public boolean acceptable(double a, double b) {
        return Math.abs(a - b) <= tolerance;
    }
}

it's best to self-review first and make it as good as you can before asking others

@janos Yes, I tested all possible cases. But I don't like my approach and I don't know a better one. That's why no JavaDoc. I'm waiting to document a better implementation.

if by "hastily put together" you mean missing javadoc, that's fine

5:17 PM
what are you writing?

the ackermann function

ok, no idea what that is

@EthanBierlein That's how I felt while learning C.
(from Java)

In computability theory, the Ackermann function, named after Wilhelm Ackermann, is one of the simplest and earliest-discovered examples of a total computable function that is not primitive recursive. All primitive recursive functions are total and computable, but the Ackermann function illustrates that not all total computable functions are primitive recursive. After Ackermann's publication of his function (which had three nonnegative integer arguments), many authors modified it to suit various purposes, so that today "the Ackermann function" may refer to any of numerous variants of the original...

I always fail to get started with F# :(
The language is beautiful but tooling support is not

5:20 PM
Here's my version of the Ackermann function in F#:
let rec ackermann (m: double) (n: double): double =
    match (m, n) with
    | (0.0, n)                         -> n + 1.0
    | (m, 0.0) when m > 0.0            -> ackermann (m - 1.0) 1.0
    | (m, n)   when m > 0.0 && n > 0.0 -> ackermann (m - 1.0) (ackermann m (n - 1.0))
    | (_, _)                           -> 0.0

Oh no... Ackermann?

uh-huh
It's for a school project

Can anyone explain this answer to me:

And they want me to use the arguments (200, 100)
I tried to warn them, but they wouldn't listen
so now I'm going to be spending an afternoon running the ackermann function, with those arguments, in 3 different languages.

5:24 PM
@EthanBierlein Best of luck! ;-)

Thanks!

Ugh. That sucks.
Nothing worse than "run...wait...wait...run, repeat"

Anyone know of a fair name for a class that handles storing/operating on the main objects of a server?
