Rolfl is right. This room has gotten a lot more quiet.

I don't see this as a bad thing either
having multiple active chatrooms might work too
I've been more active in VBA Rubberducking than The 2nd Monitor for quite a while
I blame rubberduck-vba though

12:38 AM
ah crap, I found a way to write compilable VBA code that breaks the Rubberduck resolver.
I swear, this compiles:
Sub Foo()
    Dim Foo As New Foo
    With Foo
        With .Foo
            .Foo = 42
        End With
        Bar .Foo.Foo
    End With
End Sub
still not ready for review
oh damn
wasn't running the 1.4.1 build. it works!

LOL.
You need an inspection for that.

Since your code works, but you're looking to increase performance, this would be a better fit for Code Review. StackOverflow is for broken code. — FreeMan 21 secs ago

Evan CarslakeI have been having major problems lately with pointers (not this part, couldn't even test it,) So I was wondering is this an alright design? What bragging rights?

The fact that we have enough users willing/able to become moderators.

Q: What are the best practices for Various ways to achieve the same result using LINQ with my code example

Jesse GloverThis code works as intended, however, I am sure that there is a way to condense the xmldataLoad() method. @Mat'sMug Other than clean code, does not having unnecessary usings reduce processing/linking time?

If you have working code and want to improve it, Code Review is usually a good place to go. Also, when you do var sumAlert = sumSupport = sumCashout = sumPhone = 0, you're (unintentionally?) declaring the last 3 variables globally. — Stryner 1 min ago

Consider asking this at Code Review SEπάντα ῥεῖ 22 secs ago

@keewee279 Honestly, yes. It was either that or a close vote, but I felt that it was still possible to review it. See this meta question. If you want to discuss more about this and want me to explain my downvote further, you are welcome to chat in The 2nd MonitorSimon André Forsberg 6 secs ago

@SimonAndréForsberg Technixally this isn't example code, just anonymized.

Does this game do anything yet? Does it work? Is it playable? Could you provide a screenshot of how it looks? If you answer yes to all these questions, then I would recommend posting it at Code Review. — Simon André Forsberg 59 secs ago

@Mast I am aware that it's not fully example code, but I don't see any reason at all to anonymize those texts.

11:47 AM
So?

I didn't want to VTC, and I don't want others to believe that that kind of question is good, so I felt that a downvote was the best alternative.

There's a rule vs example code, not versus anonymized code. We don't have to agree on the anonymization, but in my opinion it doesn't warrant a downvote.

Having $errorList .= "<li>Some text</li>"; on each of the lines is confusing. Is it the same text there or not? Probably not, but I prefer to not have to do any guesswork at all.

On the other hand, feel free to spend your downvotes on whatever you want.
There are no rules on that either.

The line between example code and anonymized code is a thin one.

11:49 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Hmmm, I see what you're getting at. Know I know why I didn't answer it.

I just didn't want this question to set an example for what kind of questions we want here. I don't want others to see this question and start stripping their code as well.

If it was Some text 1, Some text 2, Some text 3, would that have been acceptable?

It would have been significantly better, at least. But I would have preferred the OP to write up some real examples, such as a simple "Invalid email", "Invalid password length", etc...

Ah the new.. That was me testing, didn't plan to use that keyword. Yes the game is playable and why Code Review vs Stackoverflow? I don't understand. — Matias Persson 43 secs ago

Stack Overflow prefers questions where there is a specific problem. This question is "too broad" for Stack Overflow. Code Review however, is specialized in this kind of "Is there anything I can do better?" question. — Simon André Forsberg 13 secs ago

@maaartinus I plan on including support for UTTT in github.com/Zomis/Server

Thanks. So I should wait for now, right? Concerning the in-game protocol, what about simply transferring two digits like majorIndex, minorIndex in the form of a two-character string:

012
345
678

So, "14" means "in the middle upper board, the center square". Or are you using already something else?

12:49 PM
I think I will use a pure x/y position, like:

012 345 678
1
2

3
4
5

6
7
8

OK, if it's better for you then I have to follow. My representation is how it works internally (when generating all children, I ask first if a board is playable), bit it's a simple transformation.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic. I've chosen "broken code"/"code not yet written", but I'm not sure that's the perfect close reason. The problem is, this question is asking "Does this code do what I want it to do?" On Code Review we expect askers to post questions that are working perfectly as they expect, and answerers will tell you how to improve the code. This is not where you come to verify that your result is accurate or get help improving your result (other than the gray-ish area of performance concerns). — nhgrif 3 mins ago

@nhgrif I disagree.
@nhgrif I mostly disagree. That's a similar problem: Making the output more random instead of making it more performant. It's surely no perfect fit for this site and I'm rather sceptical concerning the algorithm, but answering one more question doesn't kill us. — maaartinus 59 secs ago

1:36 PM
@nhgrif Resolved with a code-review edit.

@nhgrif And the answer by Giles is just fantastic and should be kept somewhere.

Migrated questions often have a focus on the wrong sorts of aspects.... I give them more benefit of the doubt, and I tend to edit aggressively.
3
The answer focuses on other things, but there is still plenty to review in a general sense too.

I'm going to keep my vote to close. That's a pretty aggressive edit which entirely changes the question. If the user could find Computer Science, he could've found Code Review, and if a general review were what he were seeking, he could've made it here and asked that question.
I feel now the question isn't what the asker wants.
On Stack Overflow, that might be fine because questions tend to be a lot more relevant to a lot more people in a much easier way.
Here, that's really not the case.
So if the asker isn't really interested in a general review, then answers aren't that relevant to him.
And everyone is just wasting their time except for the upvote orgasm.
And the fact that this question, a gray area question (rather than a perfect example of a great Code Review question) will probably go Hot
And further increase the problem with have with migration

@nhgrif that's the second time in a very short while we got that question.

@SimonAndréForsberg Probably, but it is in our wooden thing in our backyard, so we could actually be sitting there (not advisble though)

1:44 PM
We've just opened the gap of "Does my code have to work?" Previously it was "Yes, but it's okay if it runs slow or uses too much memory."
Now it's "Yes, but it's okay if it runs slow or uses too much memory, or if you're not qualified enough to assess the output and determine if it's what you actually want."

Take it to meta.

I made a comment that it belong on meta before your aggressive edit made it less clear what the close votes were about.

You single-handedly decided for the community. Again.

That's my job

^^ and after that he immediately left the room, I don't think we can take that guy seriously anymore
All he does is try to provoke @rolfl

If you close a migrated question, it gets rejected, and lost.

And aren't moderators allowed lots of decisions on their own? Even based on that their timezones should form a circle around the world, and thus having the effect that mostly only one of them is online?

Moderators have all sorts of issues, and this is one of them.
we can't ever be part of "the community".
we don't get to "vote".

1:52 PM
I believe questions are on topic when the users have tested their code and believe it works. This code obviously works, as in - it does something. The user believed it could be true random number generator. The user was wrong.
I think your edit was a good one, @rolfl.

I hve been away for a week, my cat is making things impossible....

What's your deal past couple of days, @rolfl?
I wasn't rallying close votes.

@nhgrif You know what? It's just stupid that this site pretends to be multiple sites. The OP asked it on SO as well. Actually, it's no good question and it fits nowhere. However, fitting a site is not why users come here. They want to get an answer. The stupidity of the site split is bad enough even without enforcing it too rigorously.
