@TimCastelijns: Please do not use custom off-topic texts for migrations. If this question is off-topic here, then vote to close it for proper, listed reasons. You can advise that a question might be a good CR fit, but the first rule of voting to close a post is that it has to actually be off-topic here. For example, this question might be too broad. At which point you vote to close it as such, advise the OP that it might be a better fit for CR (check their on-topic help info first) and flag the post to ask a moderator to migrate it. Don't abuse the custom close vote messages for this. — Martijn Pieters ♦ 1 min ago

Q: Looking for tips on streamlining and improving my code (reading csv file)

flybonzaiI'm fairly new to Python, but absolutely love it. I'm trying to learn "the right way", so I'd really appreciate some tips and hints (and critiques) from more experienced Pythonistas. My code reads a csv file, looks for a couple values to create its key, and then wraps up the data based on a few...

Q: Manipulating a csv file to look for two common values to create a key, then summing up values

flybonzaiMy code reads in a csv file, concatenates a pid and don_date together to create my dictionary key, and then assigns the row to the key. If the same code is found again, I roll up various values into the same entry. However, they can only be grouped in groups of 6, after that it needs to be its ...

Are questions about code in a specific environment on-topic?
I've been taking up Lua lately, but only inside FoldIt
It's hard for the reviewer to verify if it does what it should do without the environment.

@Mast I think so. I often see things like "C# and Unity3D".

@SirPython True.

In a way a forum can be set out as a Q&A but its still a forum.. SO is so much more, its a community, a mutual family, a place to ask proper questions AND get proper answers

@KubaOber Most of this question seems to be about understanding code, which is not what Code Review is about. Meanwhile, that close reason leaves something to be desired. Please read A Guide to Code Review for Stack Overflow usersSimon André Forsberg 24 secs ago

venn diagram
A Venn diagram or set diagram is a diagram that shows all possible logical relations between a finite collection of different sets. Venn diagrams were conceived around 1880 by John Venn. They are used to teach elementary set theory, as well as illustrate simple set relationships in probability, logic, statistics, linguistics and computer science. == Example == This example involves two sets, A and B, represented here as coloured circles. The orange circle, set A, represents all living creatures that are two-legged. The blue circle, set B, represents the living creatures that can fly. Each separate...

about the anonymous function, node.js does a trick with modules, and variables declared in a file are scoped for that file only

@rolfl You're welcome, only took 20 minutes
Oh, that's neat!
Cool!
No more anonymous function stuff

The point about the variable being overwritten is neat. That's a mistake/bug. So appreciate it

7:46 PM
@IsmaelMiguel AFAIK, that is a JavaScript-method, why wouldn't it be available in node.js?

@SimonAndréForsberg No idea

> Every object descended from Object inherits the hasOwnProperty method. This method can be used to determine whether an object has the specified property as a direct property of that object; unlike the in operator, this method does not check down the object's prototype chain.

@SimonAndréForsberg What, hasOwnProperty? I think I've used that in Node.JS before.

It's stupid that you can't put Fix typo as an edit summary

It's a better way to test for the environment variable being set.

7:48 PM
Fix typographical error is what I'm forced to type

@jacwah Changed n character(s) in body works ^^

@Mast I've seen that in revision histories, is that automagic somehow?

No clue, I've seen it been used by varying users, including regular high-rep users.

@Mast yeah, my point is that as hasOwnProperty is a JS-vanilla method, why shouldn't it be available in node.js?

@SimonAndréForsberg You never know, it's JS after all.

7:52 PM
true that ^^
Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty = undefined ?

Why are you using a prototype there?

@Mast To change the hasOwnProperty for all Objects.

Yuck, I hate changing vanilla functions.

@SimonAndréForsberg Even worse if you put var undefined = 5; before that (provided that these are in a function or something with a local scope).

right ^^
@Mast me too. I hate the fact that it's even possible

@DangerZone There are several questions about that already on MSO. Among the various reasons are: 1. Code Review is not yet fully graduated (but scheduled to be so). 2. Many SO users have not learned CR's guidelines 3. Just because a question is on-topic on CR doesn't mean that it's off-topic for SO, which causes a whole bunch of bad close reasons (such as this case). — Simon André Forsberg 25 secs ago

@SirPython - got a sec?
The .env lower-case is intentional. it also helps with the .gitignore ignore, and is documented to be case-sensitive.
The /\.env$/ is also the same/better than new RegExp(...) apparently. It compiles at load time, not run time, and it also has the test, other methods.

@rolfl Okay. I'll change my post.

I am half-asking, half-telling....
I am reading the documentation as I type ;-)

@rolfl That's cool; I've never heard that before (then again, I just looked it up).

I tried the test method, and it all appears to work, from the raw /\.env$/.

Many people are learning here at the same time. Good!

the s/match/test/ suggestion is good.

@rolfl That would make sense. Afterall, writing a regular expression like that creates a new object, like writing var n = 2 creates a new number object.

10:26 PM
Make sure you only do one thing at a time. Don't re-think the architecture AND re-write the code at the same time.
You can try, of-course, but it will turn your code into a mess.

So... the project I'm starting on is in desperate need of a complete rewrite... but there's no possible way that will happen.
Because the client has heard that story before, and they went through with it... and it meant they spent a lot of time and money.... and now they're still stuck with a crappy code base... so why should they expect our rewrite be any better? Plus, that means the current project gets no updates in the mean time.

Can you do both?
Updates on the current version while re-writing in the background?
