Reading about what supposedly makes a good job in my MGMT class.
Programmers (can) have it all.
Requiring skill variety - yes (even in just one language you learn varying features).
Task identity (when you create identifiable chunks of work, not just a bit here a bit there).
@Hosch250 MGMT?
Management.
Task significance - the program won't work right without your work.
Autonomy (when the worker has control over how they do the job) - probably not always, but definitely sometimes.
And feedback - if they didn't do their job right, it could be slow, hard to maintain, crash, or not solve the right problem.
01:14
Oh, JavaScript...
if ("a") alert("A"); // this happens
if ("a" == true) alert("B"); // this does not happen
@SimonAndréForsberg wot
yeah the equality rules are ... interesting
"a" === true because it's not false, because it's not undefined/null/0 etc
s/interesting/ridiculous/
oh, now you're even adding triple-equals to the mix?
"a" !== true though, definitely.
basically
=== is the == you know and love
== performs type coercion on top of that
01:16
I don't think I ever use == in JS anymore.
you probably wont.
stick to ===.
better yet - use something like lodash.

Q: Find code that takes number and checks if it's prime and then sees if the number and the next prime number are twin primes

TimmyI need to write a code that has you input a number and it checks that the given number is a twin prime with the prime number that follows it. Here is what I have so far: int isPrime (int Value){ int Number; for (Number=2; Number <= Value-1; Number++){ if (Value % Number ==0) ...

if(_.isUndefined(obj) || _.isNull(obj)) { .... }
What?
I thought you only use _ in lambdas when the variable is never actually used.
01:27
Don't name a variable _.
That is less meaningful than int n = someNumber;

@MartinR the comment no, but the down-vote yes. Can't change that now though. I did not consider it a "good quality question" and wanted OP to add some more information.
14:31
@nhgrif I am fully aware that it was an off-topic question, that question is not relevant, it was just what was caused the idea of renaming "Ask Question". I think if it is called "Post code for review" or similar then we will have less off-topic questions. If other SE sites wants to follow on that, that is up to them.
But Stack Exchange is a community of Question and Answer sites.
I need to get myself in the top 10% for Swift...
@nhgrif yes, but our kinds of questions, and PCG's kind of questions, are a bit different from other sites.
They're still questions though. And while we do get some people who just post a code dump and an explanation of what the code does, I think the questions where users have specific areas of concern and are asking specific questions about their code are by far the better Code Review questions.
And they unquestionably fit the form of a question, which is asked.
@Simon - I think it would be great to rename "question", but there are a lot of places to do that.
too many.... probably.... for example, searching for is:question
@rolfl I'm just interested in "Ask Question" though.
I raised the topic on meta because it's something that I think we should think about (and I want to know if it's possible), not because I think we should change it now.
14:49
I agree that your meta question is a good one.
It might be a better question for Meta Stack Exchange? (Whether it's changeable and whether it's a good idea for each SE site to have it's own phrase on the button)
Congratulations, @tim, on passing 10k!
@nhgrif AFAIK, SE folks are checking the metas of all sites, I expect them to reply with whether or not it is even possible. Most sites fit in better in the Q&A format than CR and PCG does.
@rolfl Thank you. I hope people will consider both sites on the coin on this one.
I think we should use every opportunity we can to improve the prompts we give to people. I suspect this one is a stretch, but it is 100% worth trying

I've 0 experience using JUnit, and this just happened to be where I started.
@Legato - JUnit is normally run by a framework of some sort, or a suite you build yourself. How are you building your code, Eclipse, ant, maven, etc.?
17:15
No IDE.
I just compile and run from the command line.
plain standard java files at the commandline?
Yes.
OK, to run JUNit test cases, then you will need to compile a test suite that links in all the tests you want to run.
Ew.
Get an IDE, they have integrated test runners
^^^ that.
But, in the interim, see:
You have built a class at the moment which has a bunch of @Test methods, right?
17:18
Yes.
OK, so create a new class, empty, with a @Suite annotation, that references the classes that have @Test methods you want to run.
So, is this right?
Class names should start with a capital ;-)
Yes, though, it looks about right. Then you should compile them all, and run with the class-path including the JUnit jar, and your folder with classes, etc.
17:38
Then you need to run with something like:
java -cp junit-4.8.2.jar:. org.junit.runner.JUnitCore rolflRecommends

Note, I was running on unix, which uses : instead of ; in the path separator

I ran:
java -cp junit.jar;. org.junit.runner.JUnitCore RoflRecommends

But just got some different errors. Thanks for your help @rolfl don't want to take up more of your time than I already have.
@Legato - I admire people who do commandline-based development for Java, but, in modern times, that leads to other problems.
@Legato Note, you need to spell the class name right.
Rolfl not Rofl ?
My teacher wanted us to use the command line to run our programs, but I just used the IDE to run it.

I typed it here wrong, haha. But Yeah, that's not it...there's something else I'm not getting.
IDE's are lovely that way.
I command line everything, I think once jars get involved I hit a wall though.
I like executables, unless I'm thinking of the wrong thing.
Those .exe files you can just double-click to run the thing.
That'd be further down the line.
VS creates them automatically at least for VC++ and C#.
Anyone up to making a UI suggestion?
I need to somehow get rid of those long lines of text.
Currently, the only way I see is to provide a setting that makes them smaller, but that leaves wasted space on the side (ads, maybe?).

It's been straightforward so far. Compile the file with javac 'filenmae.java' run the file with java 'filename'. The most complex it got was making a jar "executable", jar cfm [nameYouWant.jar] manifest.txt(just tells which is main class) and all the classe files. That's been all short of some adjustments to place the class files in a separate directory.
Command-line Java really shouldn't be given in a Java 101 class
I've been thinking about two columns, but that means manually configuring a ton of pages to support both one and two columns based on the page size.
I'm glad I made some strides yesterday with completely porting something I made in swing to javafx, also used CSS which is neat.
Nice.
They had us connecting to a computer that actually ran everything, but I wanted to be able to run it locally. I am often told around here to use an IDE, and I am tempted, but I recall my professor saying that people in the classes were too reliant on them and didn't recognize things they should without it, and didn't know what to do if it didn't give recommendations/errors.

I actually really like that I write literally everything from scratch, but it's a pain since all the JUnit stuff I find on the net instructs on using it via an IDE.
