YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH... Fixed the damn thing @mjolka, @Hosch250
in the VS Output window I noticed upon clicking on the TFS solution it's trying to open it in my C:\Users\myUser. same as what it does with Git projects except it actually looks for the specific folder like C:\myUser\Projects\RubberDuck

@Mehrad yay!!

then I suspected it should be a repo in my users root
and checked it was a .git file
renamed it and voila

@mjolka do you have that file? C:\users\myUser\.git ?!!
I am wondering if I need to bring it back if it'll break someting

@Mehrad nope, no ~/.git

4:26 AM
@Phrancis YEAHHHHHHHHH :D you donno for how long I was fiddling with this damn thing
damn damn damn... sneaky .git
@mjolka thank you so much for the help... Now I am feeling great again
Now I can fire up Xamarin and learn how to make a multi platform app

@Mehrad glad to hear it :)

Q: Refactor ruby array

Justin LicataI have multiple multidimensional arrays that each have the same structure with different lengths. arr1 = [["23 Jan",3],["29 Jan",10],["19 Jan",23],["25 Jan",23]] arr2 = [["31 Jan",7],["29 Jan",12],["01 Feb",4]] My result would be a merged array without duplicate dates ordered by the date. For ...

@CaptainObvious Looks kinda hypothetical

I'll withhold judgement, since I don't know jack about Ruby. It's just that... to me, "refactoring" 3 LOC may seem a bit ... micro-optimization-ish?

@CaptainObvious Come on man.

That was a lousy edit, too. I have a feeling that both accounts belong to the same person.

ok i will add my code and edit my question now .. thanks — sarath 31 secs ago
@Jamal Not impossible, but seems like a lot of hoops to jump through for 1-rep user(s)

The question has been included to add code, but it's still off-topic. I'll just close it now.

That... is Java...?
System.out.println("elemeeeeeee"+element.text());
No it's JAVA!!

@Mehrad hooray!
Now you need to answer your questions at SO and MSDN.

5:10 AM
I Know... thanks :D

Exactly

Isn't it funny how our dumbest mistakes are always our fault?

I know man. not sure that was my fault but it was so simple to fix

I've done the same sort of thing.

You develop windows mobile apps right? @Hosch250

Yes.

5:15 AM
do you have windows 8?

Want to know something?
No, windows 8.1

I wanna know if I need windows 8 to be able to develop a mobile app
cuz I am on 7

Not sure.

Have you followed any amazing tutorial or leaned in the uni or just step by step

You probably can't do a universal app, which has most of the logic shared and different UIs.
My uni only teaches Java
I just taught myself.

well done

The WPF chat room at SO helped a lot.

cuz i am trying to learn how to make multi platform apps then i can promote a project over here at work
I attend C# but never did WPF chat. I will stop by and say hi to them

Code Review sure taught me a lot too, for my refactoring.
They are real friendly, but usually not there during the weekend.

of course if you'll find any amazing code review tuts that you ahve bookmarked or something, let me know about them
@Hosch250 code review? didn't know they have chat systme as well

Sure thing. Want to see my sometime?

def recursive_function(input):
    if base_case_applies(input):

    else:
        return …(recursive_function(…))
Are you saying that whatever logic required(for-loop/while/etc..) has to be under else: but not below else:?
Because the reason is, we have code logic above if in out program assert n > 0
So, Can I assume any recursive logic can be written in the above style mentioned? Mostly when we use binary/n-ary trees and graph based data models. I guess this query has nothing to do with python, this is across languages

@200_success here I do not see the author following recursion idiom.

10:47 AM
well it's a derecursed version
it seems to be implemented sloppily, though.
or rather, the Node-Class is unfriendly...

11:01 AM
it is a iterative version of first one

the first one also has an iterative element, but that's a hack

that for-loop is so much of a hack, that who wrote this should get a slap

RecursiveTraversal is indeed recursive, and it's a reasonable way to write that recursion in Java. However, it's not what you would call functional programming style, due to the reassignment node = node.getNextSibling().
That's fine; Java isn't supposed to be a language for functional programming.

OK. So, you mean the recursion idiom mentioned by you MUST be followed in functional paradigm?

11:06 AM
no why?

No, it's just that it usually ends up looking like the pattern I mentioned.

One more question, In my initial solution, if I place count = 1 as global(outside funtion) and use it in hailstone(), Did I violate the functional paradigm?

What did I just say about reassigning values to variables?

If your goal is to learn functional programming, doing it in Python is hard, because it takes so much discipline. It's easy to slip up and do something non-FP without realizing it. On the other hand, if you practice in an FP language like Scheme, then you have to make an obvious effort to violate FP principles.

It wouldn't be actual production code. And I think that would be made clear so the candidate doesn't make any sort of assumptions. Like "well this is their production code so it must be fine" or "this is their production code so there is no way I'm working here"

One way to view FP is as a draconian style guide. Instead of "thou shalt use 4-space indents", you have rules like "once a variable has been assigned a value, it must never be assigned a different value." If you follow such rules religiously, then it's much easier to analyze what the code does. It's a strategy to get fewer bugs.
Since node already has a value, node = node.getSibling() is a reassignment — in violation of that rule.
But what is the rationale for that rule?
The deeper explanation is that it flows naturally from the execution model of a language like Scheme.

@Pimgd as a candidate how would you feel about being asked that sort of question?

Or have you been asked anything like that befpre

12:46 PM
@nhgrif the code reviewing?

In Scheme, you don't think of variables as memory locations in which values are stored. Rather, you think more about environments and bindings.

hmmhm I'd be really nervous if you'd do that in a language I wasn't good at
I think most of the code writing things apply to reviewing
reviewing is only slightly easier

@Pimgd the idea would be to have several variations available depending on the candidate.

But all variations would be something useful to our company.

12:49 PM
I usually give the candidate his/her choice between two languages listed on the resumé.

So you'd get a SQL script, or a VB method or ObjC/Swift method.
@200_success I'm thinking about asking a code review type question.

Right. I scribble code on the whiteboard to review.

Additionally.
Depending on what words you use

But I let the candidate pick one of two languages to give him/her the illusion of control.

Ah. Do you find it productive?

12:51 PM
I am worried about the things that you're expecting
like, is there a bug in there?

Sure.

In the review part there would be no bugs.
But some things that should be obviously bad

If you told me there'd be no bugs it'd be nice

@200_success So, Can you tell me some frequent side affects when you use re-assignments style?

hmmh.

12:53 PM
Like in SQL a nested case statement that switches on the same variable as what it is nested in

Also you have to be prepared for some rambling

A candidate should be able to tell me it should be unnested

=) You might have to drag that out of them
Specifically, "do you see anything that could be improved" -> "Yep, the variable names"

There would be some easy things that I'd expect comment on, and some more subtle things to give candidates with better attention to detail a chance to stand out.

that's a "ah, I found something, here's your answer" reply

12:55 PM
Right.

Aaand expect people to try and replace your switch with a table

@200_success when you said: In Scheme, you don't think of variables as memory locations in which values are stored. I think this is where I get into imperative style? like thinking of count variable storing value 1

Ultimately, most of what we do is work with old bad code that other people wrote so I'm particularly interested in how candidates deal with OPC

A: Reversing k-sized sequences in a linked-list

200_successThank you for posing this delightfully tricky interview question. Before writing this review, I felt compelled to try coding it myself — on paper. It took me about an hour, and I made three mistakes.1 I've posted my solution below, with comments added after the fact. (In an interview, comment...

Look at the question and try it yourself before you look at my answer.
My solution isn't pure FP (after all, it's Java; I did things that are idiomatic in Java, like for-loops).
However, the style of recursion I used is somewhat FP in spirit.

It's hard trying to understand FP from the point of view of a language that wasn't designed for it.
Language immersion is easier.
Instead of telling you "don't do this, don't do that", it would be more like "how can I achieve my goal in this restricted language?"

@200_success For your point When everything is immutable, life is good I think object pointed by name count is immutable in my program, But How do I understand, when you say, FP philosophy depends on this?

No, the value of count changes in your program.

1:32 PM
@Heslacher lol more quetsions of the tkinder tag then zk tag ;)

@overexchange - a function has an input (or set of them), and an output.
A function which requires more than it's inputds, or affects more than its outputs, is not a function, but a procedure
A function with 'side effects' is not actually a function.
2

@200_success As per the below output, the value of count is not changing, the name count is pointing to new object when I do re-assignment.
>>> count = 1
>>> id(count)
1393271888
>>> count = count + 1
>>> id(count)
1393271920
>>>

You shouldn't be thinking about memory addresses of variables — that's what id(count) tells you.

Oh you mean, immutability of state

Yes.

1:43 PM
So, Do you actually define, immutability and mutability of an object wrt state but not wrt it's physical appearance in memory(i.e., identity)?

Monking!

Monking Duga

Loops are not FP?

Number of processes‌. Number of threads Ethernet usage is slightly more complicated, found a CodeReview.SE article. Server up time. Sometimes breaking each item down into separate problems will help identify a solution easier than the whole. — AWinkle 1 min ago

I'd say that that is how immutability is always defined.
Looping is not in the spirit of pure FP, since the counter variable mutates with each iteration.

1:53 PM
Not all loops have counter variable's.

But something else must be mutating, else it would be an infinite loop?

while (someBooleanFunc(foo)) {...

But in FP, somBooleanFunc(foo) is deterministic. It always returns the same thing.

I see.

… assuming that foo doesn't change.
And if foo does change, then foo mutated.

1:55 PM
Mind to enligthen me: What is FP ?

@Heslacher functional programming

functional programming

I don't understand FP...

It's easier to experience it than to have it explained to you.

Thanks

1:56 PM
If literally everything is completely immutable. :|

To elaborate, somBooleanFunc(foo) is deterministic because the result must be a function of foo and nothing else.

you can build up structures from sub structures that are immutable
so if you have a list [1,2,3], you can append [4,5,6]
it'll just give you a new list instead of modifying the old one

I'm fine with the fund always giving the same output for the same input
Func*

@200_success So, my code changing the state of local name count, I would like to understand this from the link, Ignore all that. Functional code is characterised by one thing: ....on data **outside** the current function, and it doesn’t change data that exists outside the current function. Every other “functional” thing can be derived from this property. Use it as a guide rope as you learn.

I feel like that should be the case in non-FP too...

1:59 PM
@nhgrif May be If you are learning FP with current context, you can use his time to take answers from him.
Because I feel his time is invaluable

@nhgrif it is, in many languages. D can enforce it (pure keyword), and "good" functions should be referentially transparent (which is the jargon for "same output for same input")

"the absence of side effects" is absolutely a good characterization of FP.

But he only refers to global names, he says OK, if you change state of local object of a function, in my case it is count
