ALARM ALARM
oh wait, just a test.
@skiwi knows what I'm talking about

@Pimgd Huh, I'm not hearing anything yet
Nope

Well then you're in trouble

I'll go listen closer to outside

Ninja's have disabled your alarms
in event of terrible event, bad things might happen to you =/

They're working
There's just no way I can hear them in my room!

11:02 AM
then...
Ninja's have made your room sound-proof

I still tend to get tricked sometimes that they're real, only to realize oh wait it's a test
Haven't had them for realz yet though, and hope it's not needed

I have this weird state of mind where I'd sometimes want them to be real just so something is happening

Q: Does this python program follow good abstraction?

overexchangeFor the problem given: Douglas Hofstadter’s Pulitzer-prize-winning book, Gödel, Escher, Bach, poses the following mathematical puzzle. Pick a positive integer n as the start. If n is even, divide it by 2. If n is odd, multipy it by 3 and add 1. Continue this process until n is 1. ...

@rolfl You're the FizzBuzz guru now!

@rolfl I upvoted the answers because I had forgotten to do so earlier =D

@skiwi 06:15, showered, dressed, but about 20cm of snow to shovel....

@chillworld How come you're asking about Mineswweeper?

@DGibbs You should have said "... as off-topic because it does not contain a specific problem. This question belongs on Code Review" Some questions are on topic on both SO and CR. — Simon André Forsberg 49 secs ago

11:17 AM
@rolfl I wonder at what time you'll go to sleep if you want to be ready at 06:15 already :D
Earlier than me, obviously.

sooo @SimonAndréForsberg we want that question?

@Vogel612 it's not one of our best questions, but I believe it is on-topic here.

@SimonAndréForsberg weel it's because I saw last week a minesweeper in x layers

@chillworld sort of like a 3D version?

indeed
the mine can be left righ up and down but also a layer up or layer down

11:27 AM
OK. I have seen some versions of that as wwell, but never created one. I know my code would support it though.

@SimonAndréForsberg Given up the fight against the broken keyboard? ;)

A: Hailstone Sequences in Python

PimgdWhy do you have to use recursion? What's wrong with while n > 1: if n % 2 == 0: n = n / 2 else: n = ((n * 3) + 1) print(n) ? Recursion just complicates the program. You can freely add count to the function like this too.

@skiwi 24-hour non-typo fix period

I am unfamiliar with python
does the question come with some reason as to why they need to use recursion?

@SimonAndréForsberg maybe a challenge to put in our sworn enemy ^^

11:32 AM
@chillworld you mean PCG?

@SimonAndréForsberg indeed

Yay, programming XKCDs

Hello again. Does that code work as you expect? If so, your question would be a better fit for Code Review. — Frédéric Hamidi 3 mins ago

@chillworld It's more fun to see PCG have those crappy challenges, not give them any good ones ;)

@Pimgd no absolutely not

11:39 AM
I just thought there to be a difference between "functional" and "imperative"
although I just see functional code as working code

functional paradigm instead of object-oriented paradigm

and then it got ... closed...?

he's right..
I assume this code is wrapped into a class..

that, or global count will fix it
but seriously?
I hate gotchas like this =/

I don't understand python executions...

11:49 AM
number = 5

def myfunc():
    # This will print 5.
    print number

def anotherfunc():
    # This raises an exception because the variable has not
    # been bound before printing. Python knows that it an
    # object will be bound to it later and creates a new, local
    # object instead of accessing the global one.
    print number
    number = 3

def yetanotherfunc():
    global number
    # This will correctly change the global.
    number = 3

BOOM! My tests worked in one go.

> # Python knows that it an object will be bound to it later and creates a new, local object instead of accessing the global one.
EVIL

@Pimgd That's like trying to fix bad programmers, resulting in worse programs.

ya... kinda

It's things like that that make me hate languages
Like... it throws an exception because "I fixed it for you, but now it's broken. Help. The code is broken."

Day 4,279. Still fixing OPC.

OPC?

Other People's Code

ohh, that

lol @Vogel612... So there's Python that's weakly typed, but in the docstring you should specify the type?

11:53 AM
11 years and 264 days, not counting leap years

@skiwi yap
because fuck logic

@Pimgd is it more impressive of the amount of time I've been fixing is longer than the amount of time that was spent writing what I am fixing?

@nhgrif no
That's standard

^^ that

It's why "fixing a bug"-cost charts start at 1x, not 0.5x
=D If you somehow fix it a lot faster, me thinks you made the bug yourself anyway

11:55 AM
The amount of time is an exaggeration. But when I started here, I wrote a TimeClock app to go on iOS devices and work with our desktop software. This was a year ago.

(Then where did the other 3914 days go?)

3 months ago, another programmer was asked to rewrite the desktop version of time clock.

let me guess... it's a mess?

He had my stored procedures to use, I gave him my code to use. He had to working examples. (Old desktop version and my iOS version)

and it kinda works, but doesn't support any of the edge cases?

11:57 AM
We released it last Tuesday, and I have spent every day since fixing bugs in it.
And that will include today.
I don't know how our testers missed these bugs because I don't know how you would miss them in pretesting.

LUNCH

And the infuriating part? He keeps telling me how hard certain aspects of this was... As if I don't know and didn't run into every identical problem a year ago.
And once o finally catch up on bugs in this aspect, I can go back to fixing bugs he left behind in another project.
Since the beginning of the year, I have done nothing but fix his bugs.
When I was younger, it always frustrated me to see people who slacked off at work and got paid for doing nothing. Now I know better. Now I know, for some people, by doing nothing, they actually be doing me a favor...
5

I personally find being paid for doing nothing mentally excruciating
it's that kind of waste I really really dislike

Yea, but doing nothing is better than writing a pile of terrible code which someone will later have to fix every last bit of and would've been faster/easier for them to write from scratch on their own...

12:23 PM
The only good news is that he is now working on a project that I am highly unlikely to ever be involved in.

@Vogel612 I end up polishing my frobnicator really, really well.
err
as in code

Hello grayhat. This question is not relevant to Bitcoin, so I have moved it to a more appropriate stack exchange site. Your problem, however, is that hai and i are both being incremented in the loop, so i < hai will always evaluate to true and you get an infinite loop. — StephenM347 ♦ 9 mins ago

They have a franchise in the lobby of my work building, about 40 steps from my desk.
Cathy and Claire are normally on duty.
All I need to do is walk up to the counter, they hand me my "order" (they don't need to ask).
I tap my visa card, and move on with a polite nod at each other.

basically, you're addicted.

If I were to order something different, I think they would have to get new staff, or something.

And it's turning into a financial problem.

Not so much, I have a budget

There's a solution for this, maybe
you can have a coworker get something else
or... if you have a coworker that always gets something that you'd want to try
he can go get one
put it on his desk
and then get another one.
(Simply asking the staff is not possible, we're engineers here)

A: LOL'ing-Up Project Euler One

PimgdIMHO, you picked the wrong algorithm. Better would be to take the limit... Integer divide that by 3... (999\3 = 333). Then (that number to the power of two plus itself) divided by 2. Then times the value of that what we originally divided it by. So (((333*333) + 333) / 2) * 3. That's 166833....
