But SE has some restriction on how often you can post.

@JonathonReinhart please note that CR isn't for asking about how to implement new features, which seems to be the case here. This wouldn't be a good migration candidate; please see be careful when recommending Code Review to askers on Meta.SO. I'm voting to close this one as "too broad". — Mat's Mug 3 mins ago

do you think that's a standard feature?

Yeah, that is how Windows Update does it.

Don't know.
I think WPF will probably do the slider automatically.

but damn. I like that they have gone to the trouble of reseaching this and publishing papers

Does anyone have any recommendations for how to clock how long it takes some code to run? I tried writing something in C, but I was getting some weird unexpected behaviors as I played with it so I can't trust that what I wrote is working properly.

Well, you mean profiling?

Yes?

You can also print the times at different points, and check the values.
I don't know how to do it off-hand.
It also varies based on the IDE you use.

2:03 AM
I use the TextEditor that comes with Linux Mint.
It doesn't have anything special.

Can't help, use the web.

Nevermind, you just had a poor title. If you wanted your code reviewed for best methods, you'd use Code Review, but since you're actually asking why it's crashing, that's a different thing. I've edited your question already, and it should show to you in a few minutes. — David 1 min ago

@SirPython Language?

Mostly Assembly and C

In which case use OProfile
You will find it in your package manager

2:06 AM
Thanks

In computing, OProfile is a system-wide statistical profiling tool for Linux. John Levon wrote it in 2001 for Linux kernel version 2.4 after his M.Sc. project; it consists of a kernel module, a user-space daemon and several user-space tools. OProfile can profile an entire system or its parts, from interrupt routines or drivers, to user-space processes. It has low overhead. The most widely supported kernel mode of oprofile uses a system timer (See: Gathering profiling events). However, this mode is unable to measure kernel functions were interrupts are disabled. Newer CPU models support a hardware...

I thought profiling would be as simple as checking the time before you ran the code, checking the time after, and finding the difference

At Code Review, you post working code and we will point out flaws you missed and improvements that could be make. Do not post code there unless it is working to the best of your knowledge. Also, you should post the entire project, or a specific section of your code if the full code is too much. — Hosch250 2 mins ago
No, do not bring broken code to Code Review. — Hosch250 5 mins ago
erm so should i be going to code review? but it crashes so i kinda thought here would be a good choice. sorry guys :( — DeathbeByUs 5 mins ago

Q: LOL'ing-Up Project Euler One

Mat's MugIt's been a while since I last wrote some lolcode, so I felt like tackling Project Euler #1. If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. is there a trick to it?

I don't understand why it's not working. it looks like it actually works at the top and bottom, but the middle is like broken
so @Mehrad did you get Rubberduck to build?

Pretty good.
Sum of Fizzes and Buzzes below 1k - LOL

4:30 AM
@Mat'sMug you don't believe the toubles I gone though to fix that build

That's funny.
I had a couple problems (I don't remember what), but I got it to build really fast with Office 2013.

@Mehrad the PIA's?

I think I had to do a search/replace to fix something and add a couple references or something.

Oh PIA Oh PIA
read along from here on
15 hours ago, by Mehrad
@Mat'sMug, @RubberDuck finally
I literally installed and uninstalled anything Microsoft on the weekend till I found this damn problem
The thing is after I repaired the Microsoft developers package, I didn't even need to install PIA, eveything just showed up. All the dll's, PIA folder and all
it was like that package was holding off everything
behind it
@Mat'sMug, is there a document somewhere to tell me how to use this tool now that I can compile it?

have you ever written any VBA?

4:35 AM
@Mat'sMug not sure by what you mean in the middle. I think that chunk of code is actually at the end of the answer and nothing is after it

I meant in the middle of the XAML markup - the first two and the last two lines seem ok

@Mat'sMug maybe in the uni in 2004, and even if I did I certainly don't remember a thing
but I doubt it's a hard thing to get my head around
Do I need to write a VBA code and compile it using this tool or something?

ok, well.. Rubberduck is an add-in for the VBA Editor (VBE), in MS Office.
you attach the VS debugger to, say, EXCEL.EXE
then you press Alt+F11 to bring up the VBE
and there should be a Rubberduck menu in the menu bar

doing it as you say

in the project properties, debug tab, you set it up to launch Excel when you F5-debug; VS will attach automatically

4:39 AM
so perhaps I need to install RubberDuck and compiling in VS isn't the only thing I need

ah, you may need to load the add-in manually the first time, I don't quite remember

In 2013 is a little bit different, so I probably need to Google it

You can probably just run it with CTRL-f5.

the VBE wouldn't be different at all, I'm sure ;)

No I mean the menu's and all in Excel to bring the VB editor up

4:41 AM
Alt+F11

Open Excel (or Word or PowerPoint) and press Alt-f11

then there's an Add-Ins menu; bring up the Add-Ins Manager

Yep, the 2nd time it worked. we are up
Yep in the add-in manager

@Mat'sMug The two LOLCODE questions are the two top on the site.

there is no add button here though

4:43 AM

Oh yous is already there

Add-in:

mine is empty

Try installing it.
I don't know if this will help, but I installed it before I started working on it.

if it's correctly registered you should see it in the Add-Ins Manager window

4:44 AM
Do you have a RubberDuck menu?

and how the changes made in VS will transfer to the VBE ? need a install each time?

No, just keep CTRL-f5'ing.
That should work.

you don't need to install anything

It worked for me.
Post a screenshot.
You should have a RubberDuck menu in there.

you need to have this key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8D052AD8-BBD2-4C59-8DEC-F697CA1F8A66}\InprocServer32]
@="mscoree.dll"

"RuntimeVersion"="v2.0.50727"
"CodeBase"="file:///C:\Dev\RetailCoder\RetailCoder.VBE\RetailCoder.VBE\bin\Debug\Rubberduck.dll"
^^ path to your build folder
and this key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VBA\VBE\6.0\Addins\Rubberduck.Extension]
"Description"="Rubberduck add-in for VBA IDE."
"FriendlyName"="Rubberduck"
"CommandLineSafe"=dword:00000000
"LoadBehavior"=dword:00000003

4:47 AM
@Hosch250 I can't see a RubberDuck in your menus

I don't have it installed ATM.

@Mat'sMug, yeah I haven't done those registries yet

I reset my computer, and haven't reinstalled it.

@Mehrad that's why

@Mat'sMug haven't had a chance to do anything since I compiled it. the conversation came up since you asked. still have them registry entries in the todo list to add
but that was a good jump. Now I know how to fire up VBE at least

4:49 AM
ok.. well now you know what to do :)

in our team there is a lady which does VBE, after I get into it I might ask her to give it a go

try to play with VBA a bit, to see how bad it is.
then you'll see how awesome Rubberduck is!

This VBE is so familiar. I swear it hadn't changed since I was 12

Probably not.

Q: Lightweight TicTacToe in F#

Overly ExcessiveThis is more of a 'model' of TicTacToe, as you'll see it's not "gameified" in the sense that it will allow for inputs and outputs nor will it record any "active" state of the game but those things are trivial to implement. I'm cheating a little bit on the functional paradigm in my function to ro...

@Servy just realize that that in and of itself is not a reason to close it - I never implied this? I figured the close reason was fairly obvious when it's being closed as off topic because it belongs on code review, surely this implies that questions of this type (those seeking a review of code) are not welcome on SO? I'll bear this in mind moving forward. — DGibbs 3 mins ago

Q: Determinant of a matrix

PhorceI'm visiting some code that I wrote for one of my finals projects and wanted to know whether there were a more optimal, more elegant way to do this so it does not look so "hard-coded". The problem was that I needed to calculate the Determinant of a matrix, and, at the time (some of it was rushed...

Q: Careers answers look different

PimgdMy answers are being misrepresented on careers.stackoverflow.com... Here's how they look on careers: Here's how they're supposed to look: Weird font change for quoted text, and no mathjax support ruins my answer. I don't want to edit my answer just so my resume looks good. Is there a way ...

Q: Diamond kata in Javascript. Looking for 'style' corrections

ArnauOrriolsI'm just starting to learn Javascript. I implemented the Diamond kata, and I would appreciate if anybody could give me some feedback. I'm particularly concerned about learning the most 'idiomatic' way to do things in Javascript, style conventions, etc. // Diamond Kata with a TDD approach. First ...

Q: User class and 'generic' Database class

Fabian Tjoe A Onthis may be a bit overwhelming, but me and a friend of mine have written a Database class with methods for our queries. All of these queries should be generic so we can use them in multiple ways. We make use of PDO. These are the thing bothering me; We need a session class to handle all the se...
